You're A Shining Star

Friends
l-r Laura Dern, Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston
& Lisa Kudrow

Yesterday Courtney Cox got her star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame along with a little help from her Friends.

I actually passed the ceremony area on my way home from Trader Joe's on Vine prior to it all happening.

Congratulations are in order, there are many reasons Ms. Cox is worthy. Of course the main one is to help promote Scream 6 which opens March 10. Yeah, you know the timing of this isn't coincidental Minions. That doesn't mean her body of work is not deserving it simply is what it is...

Oh and "Yes" I will be there opening weekend for Scream in case you were wondering, and in case you weren't.

Jamie Lee Curtis

Well Done!
Jamie Lee Curtis

Finally Jamie Lee Curtis took home her first SAG Award win for supporting actress in  Everything Everywhere All At Once, bravo!!!

Honestly I can think of a few other roles she wasn't even nominated for that should have grabbed her many awards including The Academy one, A Fish Called Wanda in particular comes to mind.

Perhaps the best news about this win is that it is a precursor to the Academy Awards and her first Oscar nomination ever for the same role.

This bodes well that on March 12, 2023 that Jamie Lee will be a first time Oscar winner. I'll raise a glass to that, she deserves it!

Results Not Typical

Ian Jones
Photo:
Justin Dylan Renney

On debut full-length Results Not Typical, seasoned Seattle singer-songwriter Ian Jones defines Northwest Americana with melodic, timeless songcraft coupled to universally relatable storytelling and evocative regional imagery.

Released on April 7, the album’s 11 tracks wander a contemplative, poignant sonic landscape between mid-period Tom Petty, the best of ‘70s outlaw country, and James Taylor’s accessible folk-pop.

“I grew up in the shadow of Mount Rainier. My dad left when I was five, leaving a single mom with three kids, bread-and-cheese-line poor,” Jones recalled. “My babysitter was a record player.”

Raised on a steady vinyl diet of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and David Allan Coe, by the time he was in junior high Jones was writing his own songs on a beat-up classical guitar. After years in promising bands in Seattle, Santa Barbara, and L.A., he released his cathartic debut solo EP, Evergreens, in 2021. “Ian Jones is creating a sound all his own,” raved Ear to the Ground in its review of the 6-song release, which Exclusive Magazine dubbed “A seamless collection.”

Evergreens was also the sound of Jones getting serious as a solo artist. The lifelong compulsive songwriter, who often finds music coming to him unconsciously – sometimes literally in his dreams – felt he was yet to truly capture what he’d written on tape.

“I didn’t want to be laying on my deathbed saying, ‘what if I’d made a record with a great producer and the best musicians in the world’,” he mulled. “Now I can check that off my list.”

Reconnecting with producer Jesse Siebenberg (of Lucas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Supertramp, etc.), a friend from his SoCal days, Jones assembled an astonishing array of first-call players for two days of live tracking at Siebenberg’s Brotheryn Studios in bucolic Ojai, California.

“None of the guys had heard the songs prior. There was no click track, and we never did more than three takes,” Jones recalled. “And what you hear vocally on the record is what I was singing, beginning to end – no vocal comps, no overdubs, no anything.”

This throwback approach to recording inspired the title Results Not Typical and was made possible by the sheer pedigree of the players involved: drummer Joey Waronker (Beck, REM, Paul McCartney, Norah Jones); bassist Jonathan Flaugher (Ryan Adams); bassist Gabe Noel (Afghan Whigs, Father John Misty); guitarist Jason Soda (Miranda Lee Richards); violinist Paul Cartwright (Father John Misty); pianist Dave Palmer (Fiona Apple, Chris Isaak, T-Bone Burnett); and pianist Aaron Embry (Elliott Smith, Jane’s Addiction).

Comprising songs carefully culled from Jones’ vast unrecorded catalogue, Results Not Typical is a thematically coherent yet non-repetitive collection of poetic personal narratives flecked with a minor-chord melancholy seeping in from Seattle’s famously wet winters. While so much Americana music is embroidered with Southern or Southern California imagery – desert roads, big hats, blazing sun – Jones’ Northwestern strain is washed with his upbringing amidst mountains and woods, lakes and rain, and long cold nights indoors.

Delightfully airy and typically resonant album opener “Rollin” relates Jones traveling down to California, with Mount Shasta looming over the emotions of not only relocating, but also searching. “Athens Smiles” exemplifies the understated power of uncluttered songcraft which, like much of Results Not Typical, is both inspired by decades of travel as a journeyman musician and offers epic driving music for listeners.

Upbeat, earworm single “Lost Highway” resonates all the more for being deliberately ambiguous; a jaunty, horns-enhanced story that could be about a literal road, a girl, or discussing drugs. It’s in fact not inspired by any of these – but you’ll have to be at a show to hear the real story between songs from Jones himself!

The slow burning “Again” is the album’s sole non-autobiographical song but narrative nonetheless, tracing a tale of fictitious fugitives on the run across harsh terrain and perilous borders. The piano-based “She Is Lost” is a late-night lament that showcases Jones’ finely nuanced vocal timbre, while gorgeous album closer “Goodbyes Are the Hardest Words” recounts his leaving Seattle years ago, complete with a David Gilmour-inspired fever dream of a guitar solo.

“It’s a record that you can put on when you get home from a night on the town,” said Jones. “Something to unwind to with a nightcap, although there are also upbeat songs.”

Jones will accompany the release of Results Not Typical with extensive touring, both solo and with his rotating Living Room All-Stars Band. Each single will be followed by a live solo acoustic rendering of the same song, plus extensive video and social media content including behind-the-scenes and on-the-road b-roll.

“I believe I was put on this planet to write songs and perform. It’s a blessing and a curse,” Jones concluded. “But if I wasn’t a songwriter, I’d be divorced and probably drunk or dead. And if I write songs that bring people to tears, then I’ve done my job.”

Current Mood

What She Says
Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne's T-Shirt sums up my Current Mood this post Superbowl Monday. There were many out there who thought Rihanna's Half Time Show lacked, I am not one of those.

While there were no WOW moments the show was cohesive and flowed seamlessly from beginning to end and was clearly designed around the fact that Rihanna is pregnant.

Rihanna's presence was on point, her delivery of her hits was flawless and most important her DGAF attitude (Google it if you don't know) was off the hook! Honestly the latter played an important part in the touchdown she scored!

I especially like the end game of her singing Diamonds while looking down over the stadium full of spectators.

The only girl in the world, indeed...

Looking Good!
John Cena

When I spied this image of uber stud John Cena sporting a skirt and heels and looking quite fetching doing so. I just had to get to the bottom of it (so to speak.)

As it turns out it for a movie role he is currently shooting in Australia called Rick Stanicky. (of course it is)

Earlier this month, Cena tweeted how excited he was for the film, saying, "Ricky Stanicky is a best friend to all — can't wait for you to meet him!"

Honestly I can't wait either! Gotta find out just why exactly Mr. Cena is cross dressing. This being said, I think it's a good look on him...

Celebrating Janet Jackson

Peppermint
Photo:
David Laffe

Peppermint - the trailblazing actress, singer, reality star, and activist who continues to defy limitations has released a special video tribute for her all-time favorite pop artist and icon Janet Jackson.  Peppermint’s dance tribute video of Janet Jackson's iconic song/video "Rhythm Nation” HERE was a labor of love as she re-created the video almost frame-for-frame with costuming and all.

“A lot of people only tune into the Super Bowl for the commercials and the halftime show, which allows us to celebrate some of the most accomplished musicians, Janet Jackson being one of them, so in observation of Janet Jackson Appreciation Day for her groundbreaking Super Bowl performance we decided to pay tribute to one of her most iconic music videos. I remember learning the dance moves to “Rhythm Nation” as a child and never really had the chance to perform it the way that I wanted, and putting together this tribute I've also allowed my imagination to come to life. In a time where politics and discrimination divide us, “Rhythm Nation” seems like the perfect song to bring back. The “Rhythm Nation” creed was music, dance, poetry and unity. In an interview Janet mentioned wanting to create a world where people are united by our passions for the Arts and not divided by racism and discrimination and colorism, so in an effort to erase the color lines Janet created the music video in black and white and all of the performers in a military, gender neutral appearance. Obviously, we wanted to pay tribute to that, but this time I wanted to make sure there were non-binary and trans performers in the mix.” – states Peppermint

The “Rhythm Nation” video is Peppermint’s second dance video tribute.  Last year, Peppermint released her version of Janet’s “If” HERE and had this to say - “Janet Jackson has always been an icon and I've always idolized her. Whether gathering High School football players as reluctant dancers, teaching the routine at a summer camp talent show or putting together some of my own shows, I have always modeled my live performances after Janet's but up until this moment most of those are just memories with nothing to show and no way to look back on. Now that I have the ability, I wanted to do those performances justice. I gathered a bunch of friends who are also big fans of Janet to put together a dance tribute video of "If" from her 1993 album: Janet.  Happy Birthday Miss Jackson!! – Peppermint

“If” caught the attention of Miss Janet herself with the icon posting her appreciation on her socials HERE

Up next, Peppermint has been invited back for another guest starring role in season 2 of Amazon Prime's "Harlem" in the February 10 episode and a recurring role in Michelle Buteau’s brand new Netflix series, “Survival of The Thickest.” “Survival of the Thickest” is expected to premiere in the spring.  Additionally, Peppermint can currently be seen in season two of “Call Me Mother” airing on OutTV

About Peppermint: A longtime key figure in queer nightlife, actress & singer Peppermint regularly performs to sold-out crowds around the world. She has released six albums; Hardcore Glamour, Servin’ It UpSugar & Spiked,Black Pepper , A Girl Like Me: Letters To My Lovers and Moment of Weakness: Letters To My Lovers available on all streaming platforms - https://bio.to/PEPPERMINT

Peppermint’s star continues to rise thanks to her smashing success as the first out trans contestant to be cast on RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 9) where she finished as runner-up in one of the series’ most-talked-about finales Click Here Soon after, her talent led her to become the first trans woman to originate a principal musical role (Pythio) on Broadway in the hit Head Over Heels

Recent projects include; recurring role in the 2023 Netflix series, Survival of the Thickest with comedian Michelle Buteau, guest starred in Hulu’s hit rom-com movie, "Fire Island" alongside Saturday Night Live's Bowen Yang, Joel Kim Booster & Margaret Cho, co-starring in OUTtv’s “Call Me Mother” drag competition series, co-hosting Amazon Prime talk show “Translation,” guest starring in season one & two of Amazon’s “Harlem,” hosted (New York & San Francisco) and presented (Los Angeles) at the 2020 & 2022 GLAAD Media Awards, hosting/moderating Black Queer Town Hall and Town Hall podcast with co-creator Bob The Drag Queen, guest appearance on Ryan Murphy’s Emmy award winning series “Pose,” recurring role on the CBS series “God Friended Me” and a guest role on the Fox scripted drama “Deputy.

Peppermint, who is the ACLU’s first-ever Artist Ambassador for Trans Justice HERE has raised six-figure sums for prominent LGBT rights groups, partnered with MAC Cosmetics’ “M.A.C. AIDS Fund” and is involved in the HIV Vaccine trials network. She partnered with RuPaul Drag Race Winner Sasha Velour for a college speaking tour that focused on the challenges faced by transgender and non-binary people in today’s political climate among various other topics. Peppermint takes every available opportunity to speak at universities and to various communities on the issues.

Peppermint was nominated for a 2022 GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Online Journalism category for her contribution to the Discovery+ “Legendary” series. Previous honors include; GLAAD Media Award nomination alongside Lady Gaga & Kehlani for Outstanding Music Artist (2021), “Best Songwriter” by World of Wonder’s Wowie Awards 2020, Conde Nast’s “Queeroes” award (2018), Variety’s prestigious “New Power of New York” list, and was named one of Out magazine’s “OUT100” portfolio of the most influential LGBTQ people of the year.

The Long Dark Trail

"Directors Kevin Ignatius and Nick Psinakis have created a nightmarish angle on those movie-like summers that define us, displaying a surreal notion that these boys may have escaped one fate but are doomed to suffer by never leaving the woods at all. If they make it out, it will certainly be a summer they will never forget."

     —Horror Obsessive

Drawing comparisons to STAND BY ME meets MIDSOMMAR, THE LONG DARK TRAIL tells the story of two impoverished teenage brothers who flee home after finally fighting back against their physically abusive father. Hoping to find and reunite with their estranged mother, they embark on a dangerous journey to a cursed forest in Northwestern Pennsylvania, not aware that she has become a disciple of a violent and sadistic cult that dwells there.
