Got Ed Wood?

Alamo Drafthouse's American Genre Film Archive and Something Weird
announce brand new 4k transfer of Ed Wood's THE VIOLENT YEARS

Coming to Blu-ray on November 21st

Enjoy The Violence!!!

Alamo Drafthouse's American Genre Film Archive, the largest non-profit genre film archive in the world, and Something Weird are excited to announce an November 21st release of THE VIOLENT YEARS on Blu-ray. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015, AGFA purchased a 4K film scanner to create new digital transfers of titles from the Something Weird library. THE VIOLENT YEARS is the third release of dozens in this partnership, following THE ZODIAC KILLER and BAT PUSSY.

Written by legendary Hollywood outsider Edward D. Wood, Jr. (PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, GLEN OR GLENDA), THE VIOLENT YEARS is the story of Paula Parkins (Jean Moorehead), a good-girl-gone-bad who leads her degenerate teenage hellcats down a path of gas station hijackings, pajama party orgies, and cold-blooded murder! From Wood's patently deranged dialogue to the scene where the gang performs a "man attack," THE VIOLENT YEARS is an essential exposé on crime, gender politics, and sweater-stealing. Remember, "This is a story of violence!"

"Ed Wood's influence is woven into our DNA," said AGFA director Joe Ziemba. "We're honored to help the world reassess his importance as a ground-breaking queer filmmaker through our release of THE VIOLENT YEARS with Something Weird. Wherever he is, we hope Ed is smiling."

Special features include:
- New 4K scan from the original camera negative!
- Commentary track with filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE, FRANKENHOOKER) and Ed Wood biographer Rudolph Grey!
- Gutter-noir trailers from the Something Weird vault!
- Memorabilia scrapbook!
- Bonus movie: ANATOMY OF A PSYCHO (1961), a new 2K scan from an original theatrical print
- Reversible cover art

Michael's Musings

California Dreamin'...
Michael Shinafelt
"Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today" - James Dean

This past week has been a odd one I can't really put a handle one how to define it other than we all have to dream

Dreaming is what keeps us moving, and moving is how we accomplish our dreams. That's not a quote from someone else. I just said that, right here, right now.

Let's make this week a dream. Shall we play???

One of my favorite things about waking up at 3 AM from insomnia is how perfectly still and quite the world is. It is a very productive time for me.

How about that lackluster season finale of American Horror Story: Cult?

I saw an interracial gay couple in the grocery store the other day. Those guys looked like the black and white version of each other.

A Boy and His Dog

Puppy Love
Charlie Hunnam
Because the season of giving draws nigh I thought this charming photo of hunky Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy and his pooch posing in West Hollywood for fans was appropriate.

Now you may be scratching something wondering why, or you may see the connection, but not sure of what point I am trying to put across.

People love pets. The Holiday season tends to play on our best instincts and emotions. So how about this year when you give the gift that keeps on giving a companion for someone, adopt them from a shelter.

Like Naughty Girls, Shelter Pets need love too!

Something to contemplate in the countdown to Christmas, think about it, but not too much, giving something that makes two living things happy. That's the spirit!

Ph-Ph-Ph Photobomb!

Dropping Bombs
Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence
Being it's Monday and all let's start the week off with something that will hopefully set the tone for the rest of it - levity in the form of a celebrity photobomb!

Whose bombing who? Well it's none other than Jennifer Lawrence dropping the bomb on her friend Emma Stone at the Governor's Awards in Los Angeles

Hello? What's that you say? Who, what, why are the Governor's Awards? Honestly I don't know. I suppose I could Google it and find out, but nah, it really doesn't matter to me. If it does to you feel free to let your fingers do the walking.

Frankly all I care about is this fun image of two friends and the only kind of bomb one should drop.

Got it? Smile it's Monday minions!

Sunday Schwing! Christopher Atkins

Nostalgia's For Geeks???
Brooke Shields & Christopher Atkins

As you all know I am a big Law & Order: SVU fan. If, like me you watch it you know Brooke Shields has been guest starring as the Grandmother of Olivia Benson's (Mariska Hargitay) adopted son Noah on the current season. This got me Turtle Island Dreaming about one naked Christopher Atkins!

Christopher was the fuel of many of my gay boy fantasies when he went full frontal in the movie The Blue Lagoon. That was followed up by a Playgirl spread and more complete male nudity in A Night in Heaven with Lesley Ann Warren.

Yep, Chris was quite the bold one in his day and was one of the main reasons I knew I was gay.

Since I can't post images of him that made me Schwing on my site I did what I naturally do. Saunter over to Tye Briggs Favorite Hunks & Other Things, of course.

Tye did a an awesome piece on what Atkins meant to a young gay boy and his coming to terms with that, in terms of our man Chris aiding and abetting in the process. Titled: A Return Trip to Turtle Island -

D.O.A: A Right Of Passage

Punk Rock + It's Origin = D.O.A.

"D.O.A. is as much of a Woodstock as punk may ever inspire."
The New York Times
"D.O.A. features state-of-the-art performances...
Still, it's the eerie Spungen-Vicious dialogue that will probably haunt most viewers."
Rolling Stone

D.O.A.: A Right Of Passage is the ground-breaking classic rockumentary about the origin of punk rock. The film will be coming to select theaters in mid-November, and will also be available in a collector's edition Blu-ray + DVD package.

"High Times is pleased to finally uncover and restore this extraordinary, vintage film - D.O.A.," said High Times owner and CEO Adam Levin.

The vision for the film can be attributed to two people: Tom Forcade (the founder of High Times magazine) and filmmaker Lech Kowalski (East of Paradise). The production centered around the Sex Pistols 1978 tour of the US, which ended with the group breaking up. Forcade and Kowalski followed the band with handheld cameras through the clubs and bars during their seven-city U.S. tour.

Mixing this with footage of other contemporary bands, trends in the fashion capitals and punks of all shapes and colors, the film makers captured a grainy, stained snapshot of the punk movement at its peak (which includes the now famous footage of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen in bed) along with rare interview and concert footage of the late seventies punk rock music scene.

As John Holmstrom, Founding Editor of PUNK Magazine, writes in his liner notes:
"D.O.A., the original 1950 film noir and A Rite of Passage's namesake, was about a dead man walking who wanted to get revenge on his killers. This aptly describes D.O.A.: A Rite of Passage, which was made by a man who killed himself a few months later, who wanted to get revenge on his tormentors: corporate and government control of rock music and youth culture."
For Holmstrom's complete story, go HERE.

With live performances by the Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, Generation X (with Billy Idol), The Rich Kids, the X-Ray Spex, and Sham 69, along with additional music from The Clash, Iggy Pop, this iconic documentary is now available for the first time ever on disc!
