Michael's Musings

TBT: Go Into The Light
Michael Shinafelt
"Blinded by the light, Revved up like a deuce" - Blinded By The Light, Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Remember this song? Remember how inaudible the lyrics were? So much so that "Revved up like a deuce" sounded like, and everyone thought they were singing "Wrapped up like a douche?" Yeah, that pretty much says it all. Time to slide, minions...

We are all children of the universe, no less than the trees and stars. Except for, well we know who the exceptions are, now don't we?

There are no cards in Hell, they already know they're against humanity

"The fact that some people are mistaking Keanu Reeves age appropriate girlfriend with Helen Mirren is wild. In hollywood, if you’re not 24, you might as well be 70." - Whitney Cummings

Hump Day & Chill

Jake Delaney
With only two more episodes left of American Horror Story: 1984 I thought we should have ourselves a little Hump Day & Chill AHS style.

There really hasn't been a lot of male nudity this season thus I thought we should celebrate the most memorable booty shot featured in The Lady in White episode guest starring AHS alum Lily Rabe as, well, The Lady in White.

Remember the scene where the White Lady's son drowns because the camp Lifeguard goes off to Hump Day & Chill his fellow counselor? Yeah that scene where you get some man bum eye candy.

Well those tasty buns belong to actor Jake Delaney, pictured above.

So get your Hump Day & Chill on AHS style by clicking on the link below to the OMG Blog, tell them The Lady in White made you do it!

Seeing Red

The Woman Wore Red
Elizabeth Banks

Today I bring you Actress/Director Elizabeth Banks strutting her way to Good Morning America in NYC, looking ravishing in red. Thus bringing us our Seeing Red moment of the day.

No doubt, actually one hundred percent sure, to promote the Charlie's Angels reboot she Directed and Stars in, with Kristen Stewart and two women that no one knows who the flip are. OK, somebody probably knows who the flip they are, but most of the world at large, meh.

The burning question I have is, who really wants to see this?! While Banks feature Directorial debut Pitch Perfect 2 made moola assuring she would get up to the plate to Direct another movie, I'm not quite sure this was a good choice. But I could be wrong.

Personally I will not be seeing it, unless I get hooked up for a free screening of it.

In the meantime I will chill in my man cave and watch the reruns of the TV Series on ME-TV, thank you very much.

Skip it? Or hit it? The choice is yours to make....

Me & Mr. Cigar

Sometimes a "cigar" is just a "Mr."...

From the wild and wonderful mind of Gibby Haynes, world-famous
Butthole Surfers front man/lyricist and self-proclaimed eternal Texan adolescent, comes the surreal tale of seventeen-year-old
Oscar Lester and his trusted dog, Mr. Cigar.

"This book is so wild, so mind-blowing, so much fun to read, that I almost forgot it was fiction! (It is fiction, right? Mega-giant tech companies aren't really in cahoots with the government, right? Flying alien creatures aren't really mistaken for lawnmowers . . . right? Please, tell me this is fiction!) Fast-paced, brilliantly funny, irreverent, clever . . . AND it's illustrated? Me and Mr. Cigar is the quintessential teen read, and ipso facto a must-read for adults, too!"
Garth Stein, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

Elevator PitchGibby Haynes, the front man of the legendary and genre-defying psychedelic rock band, the Butthole Surfers, has written a YA novel about a boy and his dog. Wait . . . what?

Long Play Version: Me and Mr. Cigar (Soho Teen | January 14th, 2020) is the wonderfully weird debut YA from psychedelic rock legend Gibby Haynes. It is as strange as you might imagine, more surreal than you would expect, and will move you in ways you could never anticipate. Part road trip, part coming-of-age, and part redemption, Me and Mr. Cigar takes Oscar Lester and his best friend/enforcer/magical pet dog, Mr. Cigar on a journey to save Oscar's sister, Rachel, who has been abducted by a sinister cabal for reasons unknown. Along the way, Oscar encounters ultra-secret technology, agents of the US government, super-wealthy corporate interests, and nefarious art dealers. But his motive to save Rachel always comes back to his dog. Five years earlier, Mr. Cigar bit off Rachel's hand, and she's been estranged from them ever since. In other words, this is YA the Gibby Haynes way.
It might seem strange that Haynes, once known as "The Weirdest Man in Showbusiness" for his lurid lyrics and intense stage presence, would set out to write a book for kids. But take a closer look at the surreal and often darkly comedic lyrics of the Butthole Surfers, and you'll see it all makes perfect sense. Haynes is a natural storyteller. He is a Texan, after all.
Haynes is also a visual artist, a music teacher, and the father of a young son. Butthole Surfers fans will find plenty of Haynes's specific brand of weird to rejoice over in Me and Mr. Cigar, but readers will also find the heart and earnestness of a devoted father and mentor. And his (?) dog-loving bonafides are evident on nearly every page. What's to lose? Take the trip.
Listen to Zach Galifianakis reading an early version of Me and Mr. Cigar
"It takes a book as hilarious, bizarre, profane, and heartfelt as Me & Mr. Cigar to truly convey the surreality of coming of age as a teenage boy. This book hit this former teenage boy and new dog owner right in the heart, by way of the gut."
- Jeff Zentner, Morris Award-winning author of
The Serpent King and Goodbye Days
"In the book world we call it 'magical realism.' In the music world they call it 'psychedelic rock.' Gibby Haynes is very good at both, which he proves with his brilliant first novel Me and Mr. Cigar. This novel has it all: glimpses into Haynes's Texas childhood and teen years, a touch of his distinctive surrealism, and a heartfelt story which makes it a very good read."
- Blake Nelson, author of Girl and Recovery Road

"I felt like I was diving into a YA written by Thomas Pynchon. It was a dang blast!"
- Geoff Herbach, bestselling author of Stupid Fast

Sunday Funday!

Sssmokin'!
Gigi Hadid
While I know Halloween is over, I am in mourning for it at present. "Yes" I am missing the spirit of the season, not to mention the horror movie marathons that were happening on a constant basis.

So with one last gasp I wanted to trot out one of my favorite celebrity costumes this year. Behold Gig Hadid in a flawlessly executed "The Mask" costume. You remember "The Mask" don't you?

In case you don't it was a  1994 action comedy film, based on a series of comic books published by Dark Horse Comics. Starring Jim Carrey and a then unknown Cameron Diaz.

They played it once when I was on Jury Duty for us while we were waiting in the holding area. Not a bad movie, not a great one, but it was better than actually having to serve on a Jury.

Kudos to Ms. Hadid! She's putting some of the Funday into Sunday, indeed...

Turn Back Time...

It's that time of year again to get in formation and Fall Back, not to be confused with Hollaback.

Thus it's time to trot out that tired yet effective Cher meme that utilizes her hit single If I Could Turn Back Time. While I know the meaning of the song has nothing to do with literal time change, I wonder if Cher had an inkling she would become the meme poster child for Falling Back?

Personally I don't see how she couldn't have had some sort of an notion. It's such an obvious get.

Moving on, remember to set your clocks back one hour tonight. That means you get an extra sixty minutes added to your day tomorrow...Yay!

Film Buff Friday: Robocop

I caught this again recently on HBO, still hold up, still a great film.

PART MAN, PART MACHINE, ALL COP. RoboCop, from Orion Pictures, marked director Paul Verhoeven's (Flesh + Blood) Hollywood debut and instantly became an enduring sci-fi/action classic when it landed in theaters in the summer of 1987. Verhoeven's peerlessly exciting and kinetic visuals were matched by a sharp script, iconic cast and exceptional special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Phil Tippett (The Empire Strikes Back). The film takes place in Detroit in the not-too-distant future. Heroic cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai) is gunned down in the line of duty, only to be resurrected as RoboCop - a cybernetic mix of spare human parts and Motor City steel, and the latest defense against crime designed by the all-powerful OCP Corporation. As RoboCop's memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen, Dressed To Kill) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above. Unsurpassably thrilling, unexpectedly moving and unforgettably hilarious in equal measure, the future of law enforcement is back in a definitive Blu-ray™ presentation packed with hours of brand new bonus features.
