Locker Room Talk

Hmmmmm...
Michael Shinafelt

While I am sure this isn't the kind of Locker Room Talk you were hoping for, this is the kind you are going to get.

Sitting at the gym awaiting my workout buddy I came across this most delectable and 100% accurate quote on Social Media.

Thus I am going to leave it here for you this Saturday April 20th 2024 without explanation or extrapolation -

"Never sacrifice your dignity to get even with someone who has none"

That's all...have a great weekend!

Michael's Musings

TBT: Memories Of The Way Gold's Gym Was
Michael Shinafelt
This week I hit the gym for the first time since March when it closed. It actually re-opened in the middle of June, I gave it a bit to see how it went. It seems to be going fine, we now have to wear masks & gloves. They also provide you with a spray bottle and towel to wipe down the equipment before and after you use it.

Anyway my arms are really Effing sore, here we go Minions!

That time when someone points out to you that the Oompa Loompas in Willy Wonka are actually cannibals 😮

Burning Down The Gym

It's Britney, Bitch!
"All wet! Hey you might need a raincoat, Shakedown! Dreams walking in broad daylight, Three hun-dred six-ty five de-grees, Burning down the house" - Talking Heads "Burning Down The House"

Despite the state of the world, pop culture keeps turning. For some reason I am completely fixated on the fact that Britney Spears burned down her home gym (something I wished I had right here, right now honestly.)

I posted the above screen shot with Ms. Spears oh so casual tale of how the fire went down. You couldn't make this stuff up I tell you what.

Basically Brit was mood lighting her workout and things went awry and the gym was on fire.

OK, personally I never mood light anything, not even for sex so I truly can't wrap my head around this. I mean, it's only a workout and really does not involve all this prep, not ever.

Thus I will continue to ruminate on this. The real take away from the incident is: "Just say no to mood lighting"

Mic drop!

E.G. Daily Is "So Pretty"

If I Was The President Would It Be Evident...
E.G. Daily
"See me from the inside, inside out" - So Pretty, E.G. Daily

E.G. Daily is a music and film icon. She really hit big in the 80's with the movies Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Valley Girl. Oh and then there is her pop hit Say It, Say It

There is so much more beneath the surface. "Yes" E.G. has a new single and movement out "So Pretty." - Aren't we all more than meets the eye?

Are you ready? Let's get E.G!

MS: So can we talk "So Pretty?"

EG: It's basically like, um, I was writing for soundtracks for films. So I wasn't really thinking about it for myself as a song. After I wrote it, I had this really strong feeling that I needed to put it out. I felt this needed to be coming from me. So I financed it, and worked with my two partners. Now we need to get it out. It's a very important message. it's really timely, about what's going on right now. No matter whether you are a male or a female, young or old, we are judged on our outsides as people. and it's not fun, when you're busy watching yourself all the time. Why don't we be present so we can connect better.

MS: Oh Yeah. Since I have gotten older and I'm sure you will concur with this, you do care less about that stuff.

EG: Yeah, we are getting older, how much can you play? I like dressing up just as much as anyone else. I like taking care of myself, but it's no longer the priority. The priority is about connecting with each other.
Look Inside!
E.G. Daily
MS: The less we care the more fun we have.

EG: That's my favorite message of all, once you stop worrying about yourself magic happens. Once you get off yourself and start to be present in your day to day life that's when magical things will occur.

MS: I am obsessed with the gym and diet of late, while I get attention that isn't the reason I am doing it.

EG: You want to be healthy and take care of yourself. Yeah, you definitely want to take care of yourself especially as you are getting older. It's definitely about the bigger picture.

MS: Health is everything.

EG: I agree!

MS: It is the bigger picture, it's not like I am focused on that solely. There are a lot of other things going on.

EG: What's interesting about that is we asked people to send in videos to us about what lengths they've gone to, to be beautiful. It's funny because we got as many Men as we did Women. They would say they did things to harm themselves by not eating enough, or over exercise...some of them did surgeries that put their lives at risk, So, that's the thing. At what lengths do we go to to please other people? So when we got these videos in, it was every age range and every demographic, Male & Female.

MS: I'm not surprised. When I was young I felt pressure for that.

EG: Everyone no matter what age puts pressure on themselves about how they look on the outside. At what point is it healthy and not healthy? Where is the fun? You need to have fun!

MS: I love being in my 50's!

EG: I do too! I love seeing my kids getting bigger and being more mature adults, it's so beautiful.

So Pretty

MS: From a Mother's perspective how have you seen this affect your daughters?

EG: They've dealt with their eating issues their whole lives. A little girl wishes they could have the body of an older girl, an older girl wishes they could have the body of a younger girl. My daughters are very much about fashion and beauty. But, we make sure they are taking care of their insides in our household. You could have two hundred people around you doing your make-up, hair, wardrobe and nails and still not feel good about yourself. That's more of what the movement is about, That's why we have a crowd funding going on, so we can get the message out there globally.

MS: By the way Have you seen A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga?

EG: Yeah, I loved it! I thought Gaga was beautiful and transparent. I thought Bradley Cooper was great. It was a lovely movie. She got to show her talent, she's the real thing. She's real and is connected to something "So Pretty."

Here's the 411 on all that is E.G

Strike A Pose

Fly High
Sylvester Stallone
"Gonna fly now, Flying high now, Gonna fly, fly, fly" - The Theme From "Rocky"

Surfing the WWW one can without any doubt turn up some amazing and unexpected things. Such as this image of Sylvester Stallone posing with the statue of himself as his character Rocky Balboa from the iconic Best Picture Oscar Winner Rocky in Philadelphia.

"Yes" the film came out in 1976 minions. This being stated it still packs a punch (pun intended) - it's an underdog tale that inspires one to be their personal best.

Let this image be your inspiration. I know it's motivating me as I am waking up and headed to the gym for some boxing, arm work & spin. I am a brute and take no prisoners

Seize the day people! It's the only April 8, 2018 you are you are ever going to have so make it yours!

Monday Motivation

Yoga Guy
Robert Downey Jr.
While I know today is Presidents' Day, that does not mean it is necessarily time off from the gym. Therefore some Monday Motivation is in order.

Some of you may or may not be in the loop that I do yoga once a week. It is not my favorite thing, but my body is addicted to it, and I listen to my body talk

Well I am trying to up it to twice a week and I needed something, or someone to motivate me to take it today. Hence this shot of Robert Downey Jr. in yoga action.

Honestly I am quite impressed with how flexible he is, something I am not. Which going more than once a week would improve on that situation.

Robert and myself are also the same age, 52. Also considering everything he has been through in his life and the fact that he can commit to the ancient art and do it well...that's motivation for you!

So, I am going to bend it like RDJ today and step up my yoga game.

Hey, it's Monday after all.

While I am so not a fan of This Is Us, yeah, I know. I did try to stomach, I mean watch it, once and turned it off about a quarter of the way through. I am always a fan of man candy

Busted! Today that what I am all about is the shallow end of the gene pool.

What can I say, sometimes you feel like a slut, sometimes you don't.

Saturday Sinema: Starlight

Iggy Pop and I sat naked next to each other in the steam room at the gym once...the more you know.

Cleopatra Entertainment LLC, the movie division of famed indie record label Cleopatra Records, has acquired all domestic rights to Starlight, a feature film by French film maker Sophie Blondy, coming to Blu-ray and VOD on May 9th.

Set in the dunes near the North Sea, a small circus company is suffering from a serious lack of audience for their shows. Spectators are rare but the magic of the circus still thrives.

Each performer rehearses and performs new numbers, but this fragile balance will quickly shatter to unveil their real nature and their most obscure feelings. The circus will then become a place of romantic lust where each will use their powers to satisfy their desires.

Angele, the diaphanous ballerina, her clown lover Elliot and the circus ringmaster, full of cruelty and disturbed by fits of schizophrenia on one side. Zohra in love with Elliot, haunted by an uncanny conscience on the other side. Secrets, jealousy, envy will progressively take hold of them and trigger some irreversible acts. The life of the circus will then take a whole new turn. Iggy Pop appears throughout the film as an "angel" type character.

Starlight was selected and screened at Tallinn - Black Nights Film Festival (Estonia, 2013), Montreal World Film Festival (Canada, 2013), Moscow - International Film Festival (Russia, 2013), Rendez-vous with New French Cinema in Rome (2013), and at Rotterdam International Film Festival (Netherlands, 2013).

Starlight is available at the MVD Shop and on Amazon, as well as other retailers.

Blondy has worked on several films and with talent such as Andrzej Zulawski, Bruno Nuytten, and Tran Anh Hung. In 2000, she directed her first short film Her & Him At the 14th Floor filmed in Amiens with Guillaume Depardieu.

Who Is That Masked Man???

The Mummy Starring
John Stamos
Seriously, I would have never guessed it was John Stamos behind the mask. He's pretty mummified, thus it's too hard to really tell who it is.

That being stated, while I never found Stamos attractive when he was younger, ever since he has hit his 50's he has really come into his own and well, yeah, the guy is hotter than he has ever been. There I said it now leave me alone.

I'm going to have to do some detective work to find out what he masks his face with because whatever the magical elixir is, it is doing a bang up job! Love to keep what I have looking fresh in my 50's too.

Well I am off to spin soon at Gold's Gym Hollywood, yep, that's the way I roll on Sunday mornings, however you roll have a groovy day!!!

Oh that Joe Manganiello. He recently told Good Morning America that he practiced his stripper moves for Magic Mike XXL on his sometime reluctant fiancee Sofia Vergara.

"She was on that machine in the gym where you lock your legs in and squeeze, so she couldn't run away," Manganiello said. "I would catch her and practice ... She would just cover her face."

Margaret Cho Wants To Be Naked

Aroma Smells Like Bigotry

By Margaret Cho
Aroma Spa & Sports

This is a really beautiful Korean spa in Los Angeles. Korean spas are wonderful, and they hold a special place in my heart. I have been going to the jijilbang since I was a little girl in Korea. You can have a bath and a scrub and a sauna and usually a meal and other spa treatments if you like, and aroma is special because there’s a huge swimming pool, a state of the art gym and a golf range on the top floor.

I went this morning, had a gorgeous swim in the pool, then went downstairs to have a soak, scrub and sauna. As soon as I walked into the locker room, I felt uncomfortable. I guess I should mention here, Korean spas are, uh — well, clothing optional is not the right thing to call them. It’s more clothing non-optional, in that everyone is naked.

Perhaps I do get stared at a lot because I am a heavily tattooed woman, but I am also a Korean woman, and I feel I have the right to be naked in the Korean spa with other Korean women. I don’t feel shame that my skin is decorated. My tattoos are my glory. I am happy in my skin and I am not sure what to say when others are not happy with my skin.

I walked around from pool to pool, and I kept getting dirty looks from the ladies there. They would talk about me very negatively in Korean, and I just spoke loudly in Korean –- not back at them, but nicely –- saying “ahhh Jotah!” which means “this feels good” –- really at no one -– but just to show that I could understand what they were saying and they weren’t getting away with anything.

I walked into the huge sauna, naked, and sat there watching golf on tv –- they have a fucking tv in the sauna. How sweet is that? A few seconds later, a fully clothed young woman, I am guessing the manager of Aroma Spa, came into the sauna, looked around and walked back out. Then, I guess she mustered up the courage and came in again and asked me if I would come outside with her, as the sauna was too hot for her as she was fully dressed.

I walked out to next to the pools with her, and she sat me down on the wet bench and tried to tell me, very apologetically that I was making the women there upset with my heavily tattooed body. She was really sorry and embarrassed about it, and I felt bad, but I was actually enraged.

This is something I have never done -– I actually said, in Korean “Do you know who I am? I am MARGARET CHO!” She realized who I was, and she was horrified! She said she did know me, and had seen me and was familiar with my work, and she apologized even more profusely and tried to explain that in Korean culture, tattoos are very taboo and my body was upsetting everyone there. I told her I was aware of that, but that I really wanted to enjoy the spa and my treatments and I was going to pay for them, just like everyone else there (it’s pricey, by the way). She asked if I could please wear something, anything -– a towel or something –- and cover myself so that I wouldn’t frighten anyone with my body.

She brought me a robe and arranged for some nice extras in my treatments, by way of apology, or uh, whatever.

Even after donning a robe, I was still being given heavy duty Korean woman stinkeye as I moved from sauna to hot tub to pool. I would get into the pools, trying to stay as clothed as possible until the last minute, just trying to get my body into the water and all the Korean stinkeye women would all get out.

This was too much to bear, and I knew I had to get out of there before I got all “OLDBOY” on them, as I watch too many Korean gangster movies and can threaten a bitch in Korean harsher than Choi Min Sik on a bad day.

I restrained myself from saying “joo-goo lae?” which loosely translated means, “you want to die?” I didn’t say it. I thought it. but I didn’t say it.

I left the spa, way tenser than when I came in, which is the opposite of what should happen in a spa. I paid at the counter, and the manager and some clerks were there who were extremely sweet and apologetic and I gave like a 40% gratuity or something because I didn’t want them to be upset.

I told them that I really wanted to join, but I felt so weird about how I was treated. I told them that Korean culture is one thing, but this place is in Los Angeles. We are not in Korea right now. This is America. And it’s not like I enjoyed looking at their bodies that much. These were all women of various sizes and shapes and some, like me, bore the marks of a difficult life. My tattoos represent much of the pain and suffering I have endured. They are part of me, just like my scars, my fat, my eternal struggle with gravity. None of our bodies are ‘perfect’. We live in them. They aren’t supposed to be ‘perfect’. We are just us, perceived flaws and all. I am just only myself. I like a good scrub and a sauna, especially when you can watch Tiger Woods while it’s all going down.

Their intolerance viewing my nakedness –- as if it was some kind of an assault on their senses, like my ass was a weapon – made me furious in a way I can’t really even express with words -– and that for me is quite impressive. This bitch always has some shit to say.

I guess it comes down to this -– I deserve better.

I brought the first Korean American family to television. I have influenced a generation of Asian American comedians, artists, musicians, actors, authors -– many, many people to do what they dreamed of doing, not letting their race and the lack of Asian Americans in the media stop them. If anything, I understand Korean culture better than most, because I have had to fight against much of its homophobia, sexism, racism –- all the while trying to maintain my fierce ethnic pride. I struggle with the language so that I can be better understood. I try to communicate my frustrations in Korean so that I can enhance my relationship with my identity, my family, my parents homeland.

I deserve to be naked if I want to.

P.S. I saw a heavily tattooed Korean man in the gym area, and I doubt he was asked to cover up at all.
