Search For Sound

Z2 Comics is proud to announce Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound, an innovative and stunning exploration of the musical pioneer’s winding, exhilarating life and the intoxicating music that followed. The graphic novel will be released by Z2 Comics on November 7th, 2023.

The graphic novel chronicles Davis’ journey from his childhood in Illinois to mastering jazz improvisation throughout the ’40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. These formative experiences led him to redefine the form again and again, culminating into the psychedelic frontiers of afro futurism throughout the ‘70s and beyond. Cartoonist Dave Chisholm, who received his doctorate in Jazz Trumpet from the Eastman School of Music, takes readers on a meticulously researched odyssey charting this dynamic figure’s musical evolution. Throughout, Chisholm centers on the one obsession threaded throughout Davis’ sprawling career: a restless search for the sound. A search that shattered and redefined the limits of what jazz—and music—could be.

Featuring narration adapted from Davis’ own words and a shifting palette of visual styles that mirrors Davis’ famously varied oeuvre, this 150-page graphic novel follows Davis through four decades of musical innovation and ever-escalating obstacles.

Chisholm frames the narrative around Davis’ recovery from a stroke in 1982. With Davis unable to play his trumpet, his medical team urged him to regain coordination by scratching out patterns and scribbles with a pencil on paper. From there, the story hurdles back in time to the icon’s quest to find a mysterious tone he once heard on a moonlit country road in his childhood.

“Davis’ music has truly been a lifelong obsession of mine, inspiring me to pursue jazz trumpet in college and beyond—Sketches of Spain is the first music I ever remember hearing, and I even had the opportunity to perform all of the music he and Gil Evans did together at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy,” Chisholm explains. “Miles continually inspires me to pursue stylistic change as an artist, both visually and musically. This is the book I’ve always dreamt of creating; it’s the biggest honor of my professional life to be given this opportunity by the Davis family.”

“Dave Chisholm has captured the struggle, the genius, and the complexity of Miles Davis in this book. Each page brings the energy of his music to life with the same kinetic fluidity of Miles’ compositions,” Z2 Editor-in-Chief Rantz Hoseley continues. “This is a powerful story that pulls you deep within, whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the lasting influence and innovation of this jazz icon.”

Z2 Comics will release Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound on November 7th in standard hardcover and deluxe hardcover editions. The deluxe hardcover will be packaged with three art prints illustrated by Dave Chisholm and a limited-edition Miles Davis split 7” of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down and Spanish Key, with new art by Dave Chisholm. The Gold editions will be signed and numbered by Dave Chisholm and come with a set of accordion-style postcards with original paintings from Miles Davis and the split 7” of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down and Spanish Key will feature an exclusive colorway. Finally there will be only 10 of 10 Platinum editions of Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound and these will come with a 360° spinning Miles Davis Limited-Edition 3D sculpture, a Miles Davis T-shirt designed by Dave Chisholm and a split 7” of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down and Spanish Key on clear vinyl.

24th Street Blues

Tom Heyman

When speaking of San Francisco these days, it seems like it is stereotypically presented as either a city full of young tech nomads lining up for artisanal coffee, or as a blighted, urban hellscape of fentanyl zombies and street crime. But with his sixth solo album 24th Street BluesTom Heyman sings of a more rank-and-file San Francisco, balancing the encroaching darkness of an overdeveloped cityscape with the fragile, abiding beauty of the Golden Gate City.

“If you stay in one place long enough you really start to see it change.” He explains, “Around 2010, the city started to feel like a movie that was sped up, jerking and lurching forward at a dangerously fast, celluloid-shredding pace with market forces feeling like a locomotive bearing down on anything or anyone in its path.”

For over two decades, Heyman and his wife have lived in a sprawling, dilapidated, converted-storefront rental on 24th Street – deep in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission district. 24th Street Blues details his observations and interactions from years of living and working in the neighborhood as it weathered the storms and the aftermath of plutocratic expansion. When listening to the hardscrabble sagas that thread these songs together, it doesn’t sound like Heyman deliberately sought to create a concept album so much as he inadvertently followed the Mark Twain credo, “Write what you know.”

Here, the characters of his songs strive to exist (and sometimes perish) under looming cranes that dot the city skyline. Heyman braids timeless sounding singer-songwriter narratives with Barbary Coastal Americana that at times recalls the rusty, boiler-room reverberations of The Basement Tapes or the smoldering boogie of JJ Cale. Other moments are reminiscent of Gordon Lightfoot’s beautifully sparse melodies and John Prine’s penchant for an economy of words. Over mostly acoustic tapestries, Heyman sings stories of displaced families, endangered bohemians, migrant workers, sidewalk hustlers, surviving musicians, juvenile delinquents, weathered barkeeps, junkie friends, unhoused encampments, cannabis farmers, and slumlord arsonists.

24th Street Blues arrives packaged with a 60-page songbook comprising lyrics and music charts accompanied by a gorgeous collection of paintings and drawings that were designed as companion pieces for each song. These were created by Heyman’s wife Deirdre F. White, an artist and educator acutely tuned into composing images of modern dystopian inequality and the housing/mobility challenges of the American West.

In addition to his solo work, Heyman has spent many years as a sought-after journeyman guitarist and pedal steel player recording and touring with a varied array of artists including John Doe,  Alejandro Escovedo, Chuck Prophet, Penelope Houston, Roy Loney, Hiss Golden Messenger, Sonny Smith and Kelley Stoltz . His pedal steel playing is one of the distinct sonic threads woven through many of the songs on 24th Street Blues. The record was produced Mike Coykendall (M. Ward ) and mixed by Scott Hirsch (Hiss Golden Messenger).

24th Street Blues presents portraits of a San Francisco where dues are never paid in full, but flowers still bloom from the ashes of the digital goldrush. Like any good long-player, these songs work a deeper magic on the listener with repeated listens. His lyrics take residence in the periphery of your mind like the spectral passages of a Denis Johnson novel. Whether he’s darkening the doors of the city’s Victorians or sharing a drink with a veteran bartender, Heyman has haunted the enduring and evaporating pockets of San Francisco’s heyday long enough to become one of the living ghosts of his own songs.

What We Need Is Here

Lisa Reagan, former member of the Washington National Opera, has made another unexpected career turn with What We Need Is Here, to be released on August 25 by Stillpoint Records. The new album, which offers ten classic poems by noted authors, including Yeats, Frost, Keats, Wordsworth, and Shakespeare, is set to original music she composed for the project. Lisa worked with Tony-award winning and Grammy-nominated producer/orchestrator Jamshied Sharifi, who had similar involvement in her previous release Shunia, a collaboration with fellow former National Opera alumna Suzanne Jackson. The song “Sa Re Sa Sa” from that album was the Silver Winner in the World Fusion Music category at the 2021 COVR Visionary Awards. To date, Lisa has recorded seven albums.

She titled the new album after a line from “The Wild Geese” by Wendell Berry, for which she received special permission directly from the poet. Lyric excerpt below:

And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here

Lisa describes What We Need Is Here as a “project of the heart,” recalling, “I started with how the poem made me feel. It was like creating a painting that ‘looked’ how the poem felt. I wanted to set a mood, creating a tonal palette for the words. I was so fortunate to be able to hand my songs to Jamshied for the orchestral arrangements and production. He is not only a brilliant musician, but he also felt the same obligation that I did to honor the poets and their muses.”

Beyond the digital realm, the album will be available as a vinyl LP the cover art for which was provided by celebrated portrait artist Paul Wyse whose work is part of both the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian and the Canadian House of Commons collections. His subjects have ranged from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to Billy Joel and Harry Connick Jr. to author Toni Morrison.  It’s worth noting that Wyse is also a musician who, as a classical pianist, has appeared with such greats as Michael Tilson-Thomas, Vladimir Feltsman and Gloria Estefan.

Lisa Reagan, accompanied by a 14-piece ensemble under the direction of Jamshied Sharifi, will preview the album live in concert in her hometown on Thursday, July 20th. The by-invitation performance, followed by a reception for Lisa and the musicians will take place at the newly restored and refurbished Freede Little Theatre, built in 1937, as part of the Oklahoma City Civic Center.

A native of Oklahoma City, Lisa Reagan has been recording and performing from an early age. She earned a master’s degree in Opera and Vocal Performance from the University of Maryland and joined the Washington National Opera thereafter. She has shared stages with some of the greatest voices of our time, including Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Salzburg Music Festival, and the White House, among hundreds of other venues around the globe. Although Lisa had been recording since she was 16, the untimely passing of her sister triggered feelings that led to a creative outpouring, resulting in her first album of original songs. After spending two decades with the Washington National Opera, she has focused on her own music. Last spring, Lisa taught master classes for opera singers at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy and will be doing so again this year. Her original composition “A l’infini” was heard on Bravo’s reality series Project Runway.

"Handle It"

Colton Ford Releases “Permission”

His 5th Studio Album Featuring the Smash Single, “Handle It”

Colton Ford’s new album, Permission, covers a wide spectrum of narratives, from lustful encounters to falling in love, love lost and dealing with infidelity.  The compilation of contemporary R&B and Pop songs also carry messages on aging and coming out of the closet.   “The album’s title track, Permission, is about being who we are born to be and living authentic lives that do not require anyone’s permission but our own,” Ford explains.   Some of the stories - like “Won’t Look Back,” a song about a difficult relationship Ford experienced years ago - come directly from Ford’s own diary.   Others are simply observational.  Then there are sexy little romps like “Handle It,” the album’s first single release, songs that are fun, provocative and romantic.

“’Handle It’ is the kind of ooey gooey R&B song that I love,” Ford gushes.  Producer Spin Sista created the track, hook and first verse.  Ford wrote the second verse and bridge, then organized the song and arranged all of his vocals. From there, Spin Sista recreated a whole new track and added additional background vocals

The song’s playfulness is echoed in its video.  Filmed at The Barracks and Snap Studios in Palm Springs, the “Handle It” video features the artist with his real-life porn star friends Drew Sebastian, Mack Austin and Macho Dog.  The men take on the roles of go-go boys at a gay underground nightclub who can’t keep their hands out of each other’s jocks.   “There was intense chemistry between the four of us, and you see it, especially in the explicit version of the video,” Ford laughs.

Ford contends that the highly sexualized scenes in the video affirm the trend of cross generational sexuality.  Two of the men, including Ford, are 60, one man is in his forties and the other is in his thirties.  “I think it’s wonderful that men in different stages of their lives are finding common ground on the dancefloor and in bedrooms,” Colton Ford says.  “Giving ourselves permission to explore ourselves and our lives, including the wonderful experiences we share with others as we move through it, is liberating!

Permission begins with “Don’t Stop,” a song about a hot and cold, push-then-pull relationship where one person refuses to commit wholeheartedly to their lover. The second song, “No Time To Waste,” is about being in a same-sex relationship with someone who is struggling to come out. “You (Don’t Wanna Wait)” reflects on someone who is eager to take things to the next level and “You Told Me So” is about aging and no longer having the stamina to party all night long. “Handle It” is about sex and hooking up and “Triflin’” is a call-out to dirty players who cheat.

The seventh track on the album, “That Don’t Make It Right,” also ruminates on infidelity, while “Won’t Look Back” compels listeners to walk away from dysfunctional relationships. It leads to the title track and then “In The Morning,” and “Amazing,” two love songs, and the final track, “Destiny”, about pursuing life’s dreams and not giving up until you achieve them.

It is a credo that Colton Ford lives every day.  He’s been making music for four decades.  In the 90’s, he was signed to Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter Denise Rich's production company, MIDE Productions, and had two deals with Virgin, the first of which had him paired up with the Godfather of House Music, Frankie Knuckles.

He’s released five full-length albums since: Tug of WarUnder the CoversThe Way I AmGlenn Soukesian, and his new release, Permission.  He has also released two EP’s, Next Chapter and Unity, and numerous Billboard charting singles, including “The Way You Love Me,” “That’s Me,” “Losing My Religion,” “Let Me Live Again,” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” with dance diva Pepper Mashay.

His collaborators include Frankie Knuckles, Chris Willis (David Guetta), Nervo (Kelly Rowlands, Kesha, Britney Spears), Wawa (Kylie Minogue), Redtop (Beyoncé, Taio Cruz), Larry Peace (Prince) and Erik Griggs (Jordan Sparks, Chris Brown) as well as his current creative partners, Spin Sista and The Real RJS

In addition to his own numerous Top 10 music videos, Colton Ford was featured in Cyndi Lauper’s video for her hit single, “Into The Nightlife,” and he performed on the Lauper-helmed 2008 True Colors Tour. He was also a featured singer on Chris Reece and Mischa Daniels’ 2010 albums on Armada Music (The Divine Circle and Where You Wanna Go), writing the toplines for “Tonight” and “The Story.” Colton was also named in AfterElton.com’s Top 50 Gay Male Musicians.

On the big and small screens, Colton Ford was the subject of the acclaimed 2003 documentary, Naked Fame, and has had cameos in the films Another Gay Sequel by Todd Stephens and John Schlesinger’s The Next Best Thingstarring Madonna and Rupert Everett.  He co-starred for three seasons playing Sheriff Trout on Here! TV’s The Lair, and was a featured panelist on the channel’s resident chat fest, Threesome

On stage, Ford made his off-Broadway debut in 2012’s Little House on the Ferry, and in 2018, he co-starred in Studio C’s Production of Howard David Rivers’ critically acclaimed play, And All The Dead, Lie Down, in Hollywood, California.

In 2019, Colton Ford launched Woop Woop Productions with Spin Sista and The Real RJS.

Colton’s Ford’s “Permission” is a Woop Woop Productions release and is available now on all major digital platforms. The “Handle It” music video is on YouTube.

"I'm Yours"

David Archuleta
Photo:
Brad Young

David Archuleta continues to spread his wings with more brand new music. His latest offering, “I’m Yours” is available today HERE and if this song doesn’t bring a smile to your face, not much will.  ““I’m Yours” is a song I wanted to get people dancing and smiling to. It’s all about letting yourself go and being happy with a feel good, summery vibe.””says DavidCheck out the lyric video HERE

David spoke about what’s on the horizon musically with Entertainment Weekly – “Up” it’s kind of like the prelude. It’s meant to tie where I’m coming from, my past, my history — but it’s also coming from a place where I was at the bottom of that, at the end of that path. I’ve lived out the end of this, and I don’t know where else to go. This is continuing down a very dark place, and I need to get out of it now. So this is me saying, I’m accepting myself as I am, as a queer person, and letting myself be seen, every aspect of myself. And I’m just letting all of me be seen now. And not being so afraid of hiding myself and being afraid of what people will say if people find out. I’m just like, you know what, now they know! And now it’s just moving up, and I’m gonna have fun. There’s no need to hide anything anymore — just have a good time.  There are some really fun songs that are gonna get people dancing as well, that I’m really excited about. And there are still some classic ballads. I feel like these songs are more about love, something that I always shied away from before because it was something I didn’t relate to. I don’t think I ever really experienced love the way everyone talks about in songs and novels and all that. I’m talking about what it’s like for me to experience it for the first time really and fully. I’m excited to share that, in fun ways, dance ways, and also in ballad-y ways. I’m excited to share this new chapter and these new songs with everyone. The first ones will be out the beginning of summer, leading to a full album release later this year.

Tornado

Havanna Winter, the groundbreaking singer, actress and famed TikTok influencer known for her versatility, is releasing a new single about taking a trip in her mind away from a master manipulative ex-boyfriend. The single entitled “Tornado”, is a reminder to not allow insecurities and false hope brought on by people who don’t have the best intentions to throw you off your path. Havanna talks about staying strong and recognizing genuine gestures, so we don’t deter from doing what's best for ourselves.

“This project is close to my heart. I think we all know or have come across people who are not genuine or have our best interest in mind sometime in our lives, and this song is made as a reminder not to let our fears and insecurities win, and to remember our own strength, because we can all get a little lost sometimes.”

Listen to “Tornado” HERE

Upon the single’s release June 16th, Havanna will be preparing to release the accompanying music video on June 23rd Directed by Éli Sokhn, Produced by Laith Souqi, and Creative Direction by Anette Winter. The video takes the viewer back to the visually appealing movie, The Wizard of Oz, equipped with Dorothy (played by Havanna) and her friends on the yellow brick road. Just like the legendary film, Havanna and friends embark on a journey where they are lost and trying to find their way back home. They lean into each other for support and realize that strength in unity is what actually enables them to overcome anything.

“Tornado is a story about a girl who goes on an adventure to get her mind off of her toxic ex- boyfriend. She dreams herself away from her heartbroken reality in California to the land of Oz where she reunites with all her friends who she lost contact with while she lost herself in the toxic relationship. They embark on a journey to find each other and themselves again, as they were separated in the dark times. While catching up on lost time, they learn about building strength and courage together. They are faced with different obstacles along the way with several other toxic dangers, but their friendship and support for each other enables them to realize that even if people aren’t always who they pretend to be, together we are strong and can overcome anything.

LISTEN TO YO HERE

"I’m excited about this project because it’s so trippy" states Yvie. "I tend to take shit too seriously, but I just had fun on this! I took these colorful soundscapes, wrote whatever my brain thought of, and just let it flow out of me. It’s as operatic and campy as it is witty and biting. This was such a fun casual flex to write and perform.  The same goes for all my collaborators. I worked with producers who didn’t shy away from bold sounds or surreal moods. And I even got to collab with two queer artists (Cakes Da Killa & Wreckno) who are known for breaking boundaries in the music industry. It’s overall unapologetic, proud, and fun at a time when we need it most."

You’ll also be able to catch Yvie live as she embarks on the RuPaul Drag Race Werq World Tour as well as her own Strange Love Tour. Strange Love features Yvie in her debut one-woman show chock full of outrageous comedy, insane musical numbers, and gratuitous nipple play.

"Flash Bang"

Jarvis Anderson

"Flash Bang," the newest offering from perennial indie pop outfit Iglu & Hartly, has singer/producer Jarvis Anderson take us on a wild ride through a relationship rocked by a bombshell. Told amongst a backdrop of thumping drums, warm and beautiful analog synth lines noodle highly rhythmic verses as the song explodes into visceral and undeniable choruses ("If it's easy, it's too good to be true.”)

At times part Doobie Brothers, 80’s hard rock, and a spattering of signature precision rapping, "Flash Bang" is an eccentric mix of styles and flavors that only Iglu & Hartly can make taste this good.

"Flash Bang" began as a song that Jarvis had originally written for another project with collaborators Brandon Eisenbeis and Dave Orton.

He recalls, "The song always had a place in my mind. I've thought about it often and it felt amazing to revisit it with Iglu & Hartly energy."

Jarvis brought the song to the finish line with Ethan Kaufaman and Will Brierre at The Arcade in Sunland, CA.
