What We Need Is Here

Lisa Reagan, former member of the Washington National Opera, has made another unexpected career turn with What We Need Is Here, to be released on August 25 by Stillpoint Records. The new album, which offers ten classic poems by noted authors, including Yeats, Frost, Keats, Wordsworth, and Shakespeare, is set to original music she composed for the project. Lisa worked with Tony-award winning and Grammy-nominated producer/orchestrator Jamshied Sharifi, who had similar involvement in her previous release Shunia, a collaboration with fellow former National Opera alumna Suzanne Jackson. The song “Sa Re Sa Sa” from that album was the Silver Winner in the World Fusion Music category at the 2021 COVR Visionary Awards. To date, Lisa has recorded seven albums.

She titled the new album after a line from “The Wild Geese” by Wendell Berry, for which she received special permission directly from the poet. Lyric excerpt below:

And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here

Lisa describes What We Need Is Here as a “project of the heart,” recalling, “I started with how the poem made me feel. It was like creating a painting that ‘looked’ how the poem felt. I wanted to set a mood, creating a tonal palette for the words. I was so fortunate to be able to hand my songs to Jamshied for the orchestral arrangements and production. He is not only a brilliant musician, but he also felt the same obligation that I did to honor the poets and their muses.”

Beyond the digital realm, the album will be available as a vinyl LP the cover art for which was provided by celebrated portrait artist Paul Wyse whose work is part of both the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian and the Canadian House of Commons collections. His subjects have ranged from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to Billy Joel and Harry Connick Jr. to author Toni Morrison.  It’s worth noting that Wyse is also a musician who, as a classical pianist, has appeared with such greats as Michael Tilson-Thomas, Vladimir Feltsman and Gloria Estefan.

Lisa Reagan, accompanied by a 14-piece ensemble under the direction of Jamshied Sharifi, will preview the album live in concert in her hometown on Thursday, July 20th. The by-invitation performance, followed by a reception for Lisa and the musicians will take place at the newly restored and refurbished Freede Little Theatre, built in 1937, as part of the Oklahoma City Civic Center.

A native of Oklahoma City, Lisa Reagan has been recording and performing from an early age. She earned a master’s degree in Opera and Vocal Performance from the University of Maryland and joined the Washington National Opera thereafter. She has shared stages with some of the greatest voices of our time, including Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Salzburg Music Festival, and the White House, among hundreds of other venues around the globe. Although Lisa had been recording since she was 16, the untimely passing of her sister triggered feelings that led to a creative outpouring, resulting in her first album of original songs. After spending two decades with the Washington National Opera, she has focused on her own music. Last spring, Lisa taught master classes for opera singers at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy and will be doing so again this year. Her original composition “A l’infini” was heard on Bravo’s reality series Project Runway.

The Best Of The Rest

PHIL OCHS
The Best Of the Rest: Rare and Unreleased Recordings
Coming to CD on May 22nd

"As much as has been written about the sixties, it's arguable that no one experienced that defining moment in American history more personally than Phil Ochs" - Steve Earle

Phil Ochs is known primarily as a songwriter; however, his oeuvre extends far beyond that - to short stories, poetry, criticism, journalism and satire

More than a torrent, less than a flood-the songs poured out of Ochs so quickly in the early days of his career that not all were able to find their place on his albums, leaving a fair few in limbo. Some of those "betwixt and between" songs would only emerge decades later and a few have hitherto languished in the archives.

The Warner/Chappell demos which make up the main portion of this new album represent a time period spanning Ochs' last two albums for Elektra: I Ain't Marching Anymore and In Concert, when Phil was finding his full strength as a songwriter and moving to include the lyrical in his repertoire, alongside the topical and satirical.

Songs such as "In the Heat of the Summer" and "Here's to the State of Mississippi" will certainly be familiar to most Phil Ochs fans. Others, like "The Confession" and "I'm Tired" (the latter with subtlety adjusted lyrics) may be known only to those who have the Farewells and Fantasies and A Toast to Those Who are Gone albums, respectively (or perhaps Shawn Phillips' rare cover of "I'm Tired" on his 1965 album for Capitol, Favorite Things).

Readers of Broadside ("the national topical song magazine") issue 69, in April 1966 would have encountered Ochs' "Take It Out of My Youth. However, if they missed that issue, or did not have the rare good fortune to hear Ochs perform it live, then they might never have even been aware of the song. Rather than paying for a drink from a five or ten ("depending upon one's station in life"), Ochs suggests a more personal, and perhaps more draining, means of payment.

"I Wish I Could Have Been Along" is even more obscure-never published in any magazine, with no known live recordings or cover versions. The song ranges from (barely) repressed wanderlust and the desire for experience on the one hand, to introspection and mournfulness on the other (there are times when one can almost hear Ochs sing, "I Wish I Could Have Been Alone," son of "As I Walk Alone" perhaps?). Another line calls to mind an even more famous Ochs song, of similar vintage, "tell me of the changes in your mind."

"Sailors and Soldiers," perhaps partially inspired by the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument in Riverside Park in New York City-with Phil transposing the armed services, either for the sake of emphasis through unfamiliarity or, perhaps more likely for the sake of how the line would scan, lyrically. In any case, it too was completely unknown before being rescued and covered by the Long Ryder's Sid Griffin with Billy Bragg (Phil fans both) on Griffin's solo album Little Victories in 1997. The words ("far from the planners who sent them to die") cut as deeply today as they did when the song was written.

The bonus tracks delve even more deeply into the Ochs Archives. The version of "The War is Over" from a November 20, 1967 WBAI broadcast, in advance of the protest celebration five days later, features almost entirely divergent lyrics ("all the children play with Gatling guns, tattooed mothers with their tattooed sons") from those of the released version and is a wonderful example of Ochs never being satisfied with the merely clever and well-written, forever polishing to a fine poetic point.

"All Quiet on the Western Front," from 1969, was previously only known from incomplete versions recorded live in New York and Philadelphia (both missing, as though through some conspiracy, the opening verses). Ochs was more economical with his songs later in his career and this is a rare example of a lost song saved from those latter days.

In "No More Songs" we close with a familiar song, but something new-a rehearsal take, replete with comments on what instrumentation and countermelodies Phil envisioned. It is a rare glimpse behind the curtain and a fitting last word from Phil.

I'm Gonna Say It Now: the Writings of Phil Ochs (Backbeat Books, May 2020) compiles damn near all of Phil's non-song works, sourced, in part, from the Ochs Archives at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Phil is known primarily as a songwriter; however, his oeuvre extends far beyond that - to short stories, poetry, criticism, journalism and satire, all of which are included in this tome.

Spanning foundational texts written while still in school at Staunton Military Academy and Ohio State University-to the music criticism, polemics and satire penned in New York City (appearing in such diverse magazines as Sing OutMainstreamThe Realist and Hit Parader). Onward, with ringing calls to action, from an absurdist point of view, for the two War Is Over rallies in Los Angeles and New York City-to exploring Phil's more lyrical side, via his poetry (the majority previously unpublished) to, finally, a recapitulation of sorts, in works written in the early 1970's touching on movies, travel (from his private journal), Bruce Lee and, dare we say it... Impeachment and the fate of presidents.

134 West Presents
William Shakespeare’s
Macbeth
“We are yet but young in deed.”
Directed by Alyssa Escalante
At Art Share L.A. in DTLA
Thursday, August 15 – Saturday, September 7, 2019
• Opening Night: Saturday, August 17
• Talkback: Thursday, August 29
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth gets a daring new production in Downtown LA’s arts district thanks to 134 West. Directed by Alyssa Escalante, thisMacbeth, set in a near future desert landscape, will have a limited engagement at Art Share L.A. from Thursday, August 15 through Saturday, September 7, 2019. Produced by Susan Lambert Hatem, Macbeth persists as one of Shakespeare’s most popular and most produced plays because of its deeply human themes. And yet, there remains so much to be discovered in its haunting poetry. The 134 West team will transform Art Share LA.’s space, known for its many artistic and creative events, for Macbeth, which has the distinction of being the first play to have a full run in the space. For information and tickets, please visit http://macbethla.com.

“This production offers an alternate perspective of ambition, specifically through the lens of youth,” says director Escalante. “This Macbeth is a cautionary coming of age story about the decisions we face in pursuit of our goals and the futileness of satisfaction.”

134 West will mount twelve Macbeth performances over the four-week run, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm. Tickets cost $20 for general admission and $40 for limited VIP premium seats. Suggested age limit is equivalent to a PG-13 rating due to violence, mental health issues and suicide. Opening night will take place on Saturday, August 17 with two preview performances leading up to it. The first preview, on Thursday, August 15, will be a Pay What You Can (PWYC) Night. Patrons may pay any amount at the door or secure online tickets that start at $5.00. Tickets for the second preview performance on Friday, August 16 cost $15 or $40. During the third weekend of the run, there will be a Talkback with Cast & Creatives on Thursday, August 29. Art Share L.A. is located at 801 E. 4th Place, Los Angeles, CA 90013. For more information on the venue, please call 213-687-4278 or visit hhttps://artsharela.org.

MACBETH SYNOPSIS:
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a coming of age story of a young man at a crossroads in which he is confronted with the man he is and the man he has always imagined himself to be. Offered his heart’s desire, and supported by the powerful love of his “dearest partner,” Macbeth goes against his very nature to become king, but at the cost of his soul and the destruction of his sanity. The partners take a course of action, which simultaneously brings them all they ever dreamed possible while destroying the world around them and each other, leaving them with a haunting wisdom far beyond their years.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION:
Set in the beautiful but dangerous landscape of the desert in a future reality, 134 West’s production offers an alternative perspective of ambition, specifically powered by youth. Who better to bring the boldness required to conquer such a production than young artists who are in the midst of wrestling with ambition themselves?

The youthful but experienced production team from 134 West has collaborated before onHomeward LA and Confidence (and The Speech), but Macbeth offers an exciting opportunity to produce one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays. And Art Share L.A.’s unique event space is the perfect venue to realize the vision for this production. “Art Share L.A. has been a great partner for us,” explains producer Lambert Hatem, “They have presented so many artistic and exciting events, but Macbeth is the first full-run of a play in their space. Our designers are inspired to transform the space and bring the audience into the world of our Macbeth.”

Monday Motivation

 Serving Little Edie Realness
Madonna

"Wine is bottled poetry" - Robert Luis Stevenson

That's correct peeps my Monday Motivation is wine, and not the kind that people do when they are trying to get their way. That's not my kind of wine, my kind is the kind you drink from a glass and it makes you happy

Thus your Monday Motivation is to c'mon get happy. Smiles everyone smiles! Holiday cheer is here in the form of a big magnificent glass of squashed fermented grapes.

So join me, myself and fellow wine enthusiast Madonna and raise a glass, and give yell. It's Mother F#cking Monday

Only eight more days until Christmas, suck on that!

A Fanatic Heart

Geldof + Yeats = A Fanatic Heart

A Fanatic Heart: Bob Geldof On W. B. Yeats
2 DVD / CD set coming February 9th

Includes Bonus Tracks from Bono and Elvis Costello
"Geldof speaks with such intelligence that he brings out the strength of the great poet's verbal music. This was the perfect tribute." - Clive James, The Guardian
"One of the best literary docs I've seen." - James Walton, The Spectator

Musician and advocate Bob Geldof examines the life and work of one of the 20th century's greatest poets, William Butler Yeats. A Fanatic Heart is the extraordinary story of revolution, nation-birth, mythology and disillusion and how one poetic genius dreamed and sang an entire country into being from the ravages of poverty and famine and into the raw dawn of a modern state.

With over 30 unique performances of W. B. Yeats' epic poetry by leading Irish and British cultural figures, Geldof argues why Yeats and his circle built the cultural scaffolding of a modern, pluralist Ireland but was pushed aside by the narrow-minded Catholic elite of the new Free State - the "Banana Republic" that Geldof in turn rebelled against half a century later.

Written by Geldof and biographer Roy Foster, this incisive and moving documentary features readings by celebrity contributors Sting, Noel Gallagher, Elvis Costello, Edna O'Brien, Bono, Van Morrison, Shane MacGowan, Olivia O'Leary, Liam Neeson, Stephen Fry, Dominic West, Richard E. Grant, Bill Nighy, Anne Enright, Colin Farrell, Ardal O'Hanlon and many others.

EXTRAS:
* Over two hours of additional commentaries and readings by dozens of celebrities
* Two songs based on Yeats' poems by:
-    Bono "Mad as the Mist and Snow" *previously unreleased
-    Elvis Costello "A Drunken Man's Praise of Sobriety"
* Yeats Remembered soundtrack by Pete Briquette [30 mins]
* 73 poetry readings and 23 discussion pieces

Do You Believe In Magic? See/Saw

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
See/Saw
Tis' the Season of the Witch

Atlas Obscura presents See/Saw, an evening with performer and award-winning magician Siegfried Tieber. Opening on Thursday, September 14, 2017 and running for seven weeks, Tieber will play host, historian, and illusionist as he guides intimate audiences on an unconventional journey. An immersion into a magician’s mind, See/Saw is an invitation to take a closer look at the art of conjuring with playing cards: a contemporary take on an ancient art form, where the important question isn’t how, but why. This limited engagement will take place at Civic Center Studios in Downtown Los Angeles. Our host’s ambition is to share (and infect us with) his passion for a beautiful but often misunderstood art form.

Directed by Magic Castle/Academy of Magical Arts magician Jon ArmstrongSee/Saw will run from September 14 through October 29, 2017; six shows per week, over four days each week. Various showtimes (please refer to the ticketing link). Civic Center Studios – located at 207 South Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012 – is a secret hideaway nestled inside the historic core of Downtown Los Angeles. Formerly the office of criminal defense attorney Max Solomon (Bugsy Siegel and Mickey Cohen's lawyer), today this brick and steel den is a production studio and cultural center for artists and musicians. Find the hidden entrance in the parking lot next to the subterranean speakeasy, Birds & Bees. Tickets cost $74 per person. Recommended ages for audience members is 16+. Since opening night, audience members have been greeted by the enchanting duo of Dahlia and Dia Taquali. For more information, please visit http://www.atlasobscura.com/seesaw.
Dahlia & Dia Taquali
“In our culture, we are often exposed to film and theatre and music and dance—all these glorious, beautiful, inspiring means of expression,” Ecuadorian-born, Los Angeles-based Tieber explains. “However, most people don’t often encounter magic performed live. In order to appreciate the enormous potential of this fascinating, deep, complex art form, it has to be experienced up close.”

THE EXPERIENCE –
Card Magic has been lauded as “the poetry of magic.” Due to its versatility and range, the deck of cards is paralleled with the piano. More than mere printed pieces of paper, this instrument embodies chance, chaos and luck. See/Saw is an invitation to take a closer look at the art of conjuring with playing cards: an immersive experience, an intimate audience – sleeves rolled up.

Much more than a traditional entertainment, this is an interactive experience. Our host takes us by the hand – metaphorically, that is – through an evening that integrates an exploration of the environment, a private performance and a candid conversation about the art of magic.

When Doves Cry - R.I.P: Prince

Millions of people found out what it sounds like when doves cry with the passing of Prince Rogers Nelson, and justifiably so. The man was in a word: brilliant!

He was one of the key artists that shaped my world view, like he did so many others. The one overriding message he preached was - live.

Prince was all about living, love and passion. I especially took to him linking spirituality and sexuality. This is how he should be remembered. In his utopia there was no right or wrong, there simply was.

So rather than me continue, why not let his lyrics do the talking. Here are some excerpts of poetry from this amazing artist. Let's Go Crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"We can fuck until the dawn, making love 'til cherry's gone
Erotic City can't you see, thoughts of pretty you and me"

"Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time"

Lovesexy

"But I just a virgin And I'm on my way to be
Wed. But you're such a hunk. So full of spunk,
I'll give you Head"

"I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you
Laughing in the purple rain"

"I was dreamin' when I wrote this
So sue me if I go 2 fast
But life is just a party, and parties weren't meant 2 last"

"Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry"

"You don't have to be beautiful
To turn me on
I just need your body baby
From dusk till dawn
You don't need experience
To turn me out"

"Oh yeah!
In France, a skinny man died of a big disease with a little name
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle and soon she did the same
At home there are seventeen-year-old boys and their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called 'The Disciples'
High on crack and totin' a machine gun"

"She wore a
Raspberry beret
The kind you find in a second hand store
Raspberry beret
And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more
Raspberry beret
I think I love her"

                                                        Nothing Compares 2 U
                                                               Prince Cover:
                                                          Sinead O'Connor

"It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away"

Much Ado About Colton Haynes

The Poetry Of Ambiguity
Colton Haynes
The Internet is all a buzz, and a Twitter about actor and Arrow star Colton Haynes. Did he come out on his Tumblr page, or didn't he??? Oh, the poetry of ambiguity! Colton has neither confirmed or denied this recent post.

Here is what a fan said on Tumblr page this past weekend: “When I found out Colton Haynes had a secret gay past, I got so excited even though I know it makes absolutely no difference in my life."

Cheekily Colton responded: "Was it a secret? Let’s all just enjoy life and have no regrets.”

Of course his fans went wild on Twitter, did he or didn't he say he was indeed gay? Um, he was never in. That was the whole point of the comment people. While I get the speculation post public admission, Colton is saying he's gay, he was never in, let's move on.

Since the fan response has been one of support, that sounds like a grand idea!

"Hip & Accessible" Far In The Maples

Far in the Maples
Regina Conroy & Reshy P.
Turning the celebrated, swingin’ sound of the Jersey Shore inside out, “poetic pop” duo Far In The Maples is poised to cast a new seaside musical legacy built upon the nuances of internal emotion with unexpected soundscapes, unforgettable melodies and the sweetly understated vocals.

They recently released their album Skywork that showcases song-oriented music that’s both honest and contemporary with a classic timelessness, from an infectious new band driven by songbird Regina Conroy and multi-instrumentalist Reshy P.

Regina Conroy is here to tell us all about it, take it away Regina!

MS: Hey Regina nice to meet you, your musical style is so sophisticated. How did coming from the Jersey Shore influence it?

RC: Living at the Jersey Shore? I grew up around music all the time with my family. my Dad was a musician and so was my older brother. So when I was younger my Dad and my brother would play shows, or we would go to concerts, there was always stuff happening on the boardwalk, all these local shows that I would get to go to. I've loved to sing since I was five years old, anything that was playing in our kitchen when my Dad would turn on the radio...of course growing up on the Jersey Shore people are like: "Ohhhhh, you know Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi?" It's like, yes of course I've seen them both at stores and places like that. Maybe their music influenced me subconsciously, but I'm not a die hard fan because they live twenty minutes away from me. (laughs)

MS: To me your music, lyrically has a Bob Dylan vibe.

RC: My Mom is obsessed with Bob Dylan we always had his CD's in the car, I love him. Writing poetry is a passion of mine, I took a poetry class as an after school type thing. My poetry instructor told my Mom at the time: "Wow, she's really good for her age."

MS: How old were you?

RC: I was eight when I started writing poetry. As I got older I used my poetry as a means to write lyrics. When I was fifteen I got my first guitar so I started teaching myself and molding all of the scales together and started writing music.

MS: You really started from a young age.

RC: Definitely, I really did a lot of self teaching. I listened to all different types of music, would read the lyric books that came with all of the CD's. My influence was anything I could get my hands on. Some people go to school to learn to perform music or how to play it...for me it was just having it all around me all those years and picking up on all of the different influences.

MS: You and your band mate Reshy P. really know how to blend them well.

RC: It interesting, we both have different musical influences but we are able to find that balance of a little bit of mine, a little bit of his and make it into our own.

MS: The fact that you guys do pop music, yet are still artistic is great, a lot of people have lost a sense of that.

RC: I know, I know, it's hard to put a name on it, boil it down when people ask us: "Who do you think you guys sound like?" I don't know. There's lots of pop on the radio, but most of it is repetitive and one line. It's very dance kind of stuff, ours is a little more poetic. It's still pop, but there is a lot to be said and thought about in it.
Regina & Reshy

MS: So do you always write the lyrics and Reshy always writes it to music?

RC: For the most part. We started writing together in November of 2013. Basically the first time that we met I brought everything I had as far as things that I was working on lyrically and musically, and some were just lyrics. So we kind of worked from some of my little pieces that I had worked on before meeting Reshy and brought them to music. Basically I bring the lyrics and we work on them together but mostly it's ninety percent my words.

MS: What inspires your poetry?

RC: To inspire myself I put myself in a different place. Go somewhere, tap into how I feel in the moment. Most of it has been putting myself outside my comfort zone for inspiration. Much of what I write about is relationships. But I think the focus of that is writing about the journey of finding yourself. It's very reflective and very personal.

MS: You guys took the band name Far in the Maples from a Robert Frost poem. What is it you like about his work?

RC: I really haven't read a ton of poetry myself. I just kind of read stuff here and there, or people will show me something, and I'll say: "Hey I really like this!" Reshy actually showed me that poem and it stuck with us. The visualization of far in the maples...it's a beautiful poem. I'm not particularly a Robert Frost fan, but I'm not, not a fan either. T.G.I.F! "One Step"

One Step
And now for something completely lovely and unique, have a terrific weekend!

ONE STEP is a collaboration between the French director Clément Oberto and L.A.-based electronic composer John Tejada.

Shot in hyper slow-motion with a phantom camera in the Mojave desert, ONE STEP speaks about love, time and life trajectory.

"After 10 years working with composers, I realized the best way to create a strong match between music and video was to start the collaboration at the earliest stage possible and leave all the doors open," says Oberto.

With ONE STEP, Tejada and Oberto deliver an audio-visual poetry located at the exact intersection between short film and music video.

John Tejada is in the midst of promotion for his upcoming album, Signs Under Test, out via Kompakt on Feb. 3, 2015. Look for the Feb. issue of German Mixmag for the 8-page cover feature (!). Or hear tunes around the globe from the BBC to KCRW.

Clément Oberto has directed and produced a myriad of work, with a peerless vision focused on the creation of distinctive universes for everything from haute couture and art, to commercials and music videos.
