Helen Mirren Sucks On Jimmy Fallon

Mirren & Fallon: They Switched Balloons, Helen Wanted The One That Matched Her Dress, Damn It!
Helen Mirren stopped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon last night and she sucked! The talented and amazing looking actress who just let loose her L'Oreal campaign joined Jimmy in a Q & A where they each sucked helium out of a balloon when speaking.

Mirren's balloon was blue and matched the dress she was wearing, Fallon's was red. They accessorized well.

Fallon asked her everything from where she keeps her Oscar to giving her an award of a stuffed panda and having Ms. Mirren give and acceptance speech. Oh an of course there were plenty of entendres to be had.

Not to mention when the balloon actually broke some wind Mirren pretended it was her own.

I love Helen Mirren, she is a highly regarded actress who has not one uptight or pretentious bone in her body, she really knows how to cut loose! Check out the video below and have a terrific Tuesday!

Where Troubles Melt Like Lemon Drops: "The Sound of Oz"

Everyone knows the songs from The Wizard of Oz; from Ding Dong The Witch is Dead, If I Only Had a Brain to Over the Rainbow. In fact Over The Rainbow is often cited as the greatest movie hit of all time. Few, however, know the names of the men who wrote Rainbow and the rest of the classic Oz score.

The remedy for their anonymity now is in the hands of Aaron Harburg -- great-grandson of The Wizard of Oz lyricist E.Y. “Yip” Harburg -- who has begun production on The Sound of Oz. The feature-length documentary honors both his great-grandfather and Oz composer Harold Arlen.

Aaron is conducting a campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for his mission. I recently got to speak with him about it...so follow the yellow brick road and hear what he had to say.

MS: The songs from The Wizard of Oz are so well known, whey did it take until now for a project like this to happen?

AH: That's a really good question, since the songs have endured for 75 years it's pretty amazing. My Grandfather, Ernie Harburg has attempted to address this for his book Who Put The Rainbow in The Wizard Of Oz? But the book never really obtained the kind of notoriety it should have. I guess the powers that be elected the songs just weren't that important to the story.

MS: That's interesting because the songs from the film are so iconic, especially Over the Rainbow. Who doesn't know that one?

AH: The Wizard of Oz has always just been part of my family. But it wasn't until I went to New York and looking around, I was at some restaurant, or whatever, and it just struck me
Not only would everyone know Over the Rainbow, but they would probably have a personal connection to it. The Wizard of Oz has been a part of everyone's lives growing up. This might be less the case now, because it is not an annual television event anymore, but for a lot of people my age and older it definitely is. It's amazing to me how much impact it has had.
Aaron Harburg: Making Great Grandpa Proud
MS: Want to hear something shocking? I have a spin instructor who is forty-two and she asked the class how many people have not seen The Wizard of Oz and nobody raised their hand. She said she hadn't and I thought: "Well you're a freak!" (laughs)

AH: Yeah exactly, exactly! (laughs)

MS: How long have you been working on the documentary?

AH: I actually started working on this in 2012. I moved to Los Angeles and spoke to a number of producers, studios and whatnot, I just wasn't getting the support and enthusiasm
I thought I was going to get. Last year at the Oz-Stravaganza in Chittenango, New York, which is the biggest Oz festival I met Ryan Jay who is a nationally syndicated film critic and has worked at a couple of television networks like VH-1, Showtime all that type of stuff. So he's had a bit of productions experience and he was super enthusiastic and decided to come on board. We shot a trailer last year in New York and are doing a crowd funding campaign, instead of dealing with investors so we can have creative control. That's my goal right no, I'm no longer working for my family estate, but I'm working on something I am very passionate about. I feel like it's a matter of justice and it has to be told.

MS: Can you spill on any juicy behind the scenes tidbits on the making of the songs?

AH: Hmmmmmmm...well Ira Gershwin actually intervened as part of the process of writing Over the Rainbow. That's not too well known, but there are a lot of little stories that we're planning on telling. There's two sides to the documentary. On the one hand there's the collaboration between my Great Grandfather and Harold Arlen songs were made, and them as people. Then there is the part about how the songs have taken on their own life and in our culture and impacted countless people sang it at The Oscars recently, there's the Hawaiian version that everybody knows, not jut Over the Rainbow, but Ding Dong the Witch is Dead was a big deal recently. But we will definitely address what was going on behind the scenes.
We're Off To See The Wizard...

MS: Something that I found interesting that is stated in the trailer is that there is no mention of a rainbow in the book by Frank L. Baum.

AH: Yeah, that's right. There was no mention of a rainbow, so my Great Grandfather had a penchant for rainbows, he also wrote Finian's Rainbow, Look to the Rainbow. a rainbow then had a very different meaning than it does today. (laughs) It is was in his songs like a symbol of hope. There is a story behind the song Over the Rainbow. Allegedly my Great Grandfather was in the gardens one day thinking about: "What are we going to call this song, what lyrics are we going to put to this music?" Hearing the music and then creating the words is a crazy process. There was a Japanese gardener who had turned on the sprinklers and they were spraying and he wanted to get out of it, and he could see a rainbow and he thought to himself: "If I can just get past the rainbow I'll be fine" right then it clicked. That's the legend. (laughs)

MS: I believe it when I get creative ideas they come from super odd places.

AH: Yeah (laughs) Harold Arlen came up with the melody on the way to Grauman's Chinese Theater. He had to pull over so he could run into a drug store and jot it down on a piece of paper. That's totally crazy! (laughs)

MS: You're creative you know that's how it works.

AH: Yeah totally! I wake up in three in the morning going: "Oh my gosh what a great idea" and then I can't sleep for the rest of the night.

MS: Over the Rainbow still packs power, it's a go to song for many American Idol contestants.(laughs)

AH: Well it's a great song for people to show off their range: "look I can do an octave leap!"
(laughs)

MS: I am really looking forward to seeing the finished product.

AH: This has been an interesting journey for me personally because when I hear Over the Rainbow, since I never got to meet "Yip" he died before I was born. So when I hear that song it's almost like he's speaking to me, "the dreams that you dare to dream" they really do come true. That's been the biggest part of my inspiration to get this documentary made.

How They Won Their War: The Grip Weeds

The Grip Weeds
"How I Won The War"
coming April 7th via Jem Records

"We like to mix it up in Jersey and The Grip Weeds are a great example. A touch of John Lennon, a bit of The Byrds, a dash of The Kinks, pinch of The Who, and a dollop of more muscular Zombies and you get something quite original actually. And quite cool."
-Steven Van Zandt (Sirius XM, Bruce Springsteen, Sopranos)

"...Slightly trippy sonic land mines that are simultaneously catchy  as hell and slightly dangerous."
- John M. Borack, Goldmine Magazine

Yep The Beatles influenced band are reunited and feeling groovy with a new CD, you go Grip Weeds!
The Beatles are remembered as purveyors of peace, but their existence as a creative unit ended in acrimony in April of 1970. On April 7, 2015, one of the greatest Beatles-influenced bands to come down the pike will celebrate their reunification with the release of their new album "How I Won The War".

"Our sound isn't overtly Beatle-y but an observant listener can hear the connection," says Kurt Reil, drummer/vocalist for The Grip Weeds. "Our approach to song craft and the idea of using the recording studio as an instrument are both heavily influenced by The Beatles and George Martin."

In his capacity as producer at The Grip Weeds' legendary House Of Vibes Studio, Reil has worked with luminaries such as Mark Lindsay and Paul Simon collaborators Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Platinum selling Captiol Records artists The Smithereens recorded their two highly regarded Beatles projects ("Meet The Smithereens!", "B-Sides The Beatles") with Kurt Reil producing at the HOV. The Smithereens sessions also featured a performance by drummer Andy White, best known for playing on The Beatles "Love Me Do".

According to Reil, The Grip Weeds' connection to The Beatles goes all the way back to the band's origins.

"We named our band after a character John Lennon played in the film adaptation of 'How I Won The War'," Reil said. "As it happens, we went through an internal war during the making of the record that nearly split us up, so the title of the movie seemed apt for our new album as well."

The Beatles dissolved into a myriad of lawsuits and thinly veiled insults delivered via solo albums. It would be years before the wounds between John, Paul, George and Ringo would come close to healing. By the time the former band mates were on speaking terms again, John Lennon's life was obscenely cut short.

"The Beatles never got to write a reconciliation album," Reil said. "Who knows what kind of music they would have made if they came back together."

Although it's impossible to compare a band with a loyal international cult following such as The Grip Weeds to a behemoth such as The Beatles, the troubles that dogged the four lads from Liverpool are universal.
Preview: How I Won The War

"The Beatles lived in each other's pockets but The Grip Weeds go way beyond that," Reil said. "Our lead guitarist Kristin Pinell is my wife; my brother Rick plays guitar and shares lead vocals with me."

The family dynamic within The Grip Weeds has been a double edged sword. Sometimes the familial ties have acted as a safety net, while at other times the band has been nearly impaled by them.

"Keeping a band together on any level is incredibly difficult," Reil said. "The fact that 3/4 of The Grip Weeds are related has at times helped us weather some rocky terrain. The B-side to that is when an argument erupts during a rehearsal or recording session it follows you home, thus intensifying an already volatile situation."

Reil is quick to point out that the Grip Weeds have never had trouble making music together, even when the pressures of running a band and studio have taken their toll.

"It's the peripheral aspects of making music that have sparked most of our troubles," Reil said.

Adding to the pressures of the group/family dynamic was the departure of Grip Weeds bassist Michael Kelly.

"When MK left, we considered breaking up the band, but family ties are strong and we also felt there was more for us to to do musically." Reil said.

Enter bass player extraordinaire Dave DeSantis, a veteran of New Jersey music scene.

"What Dave did for The Grip Weeds is similar to what Billy Preston did for The Beatles," Reil said. "As George Harrison said in relation to Billy Preston, when you have company around you tend to be less bitchy. Dave's easy going demeanor put everyone at ease, and his musicianship inspired everyone in the band."

The new Grip Weeds album "How I Won The War" features 17 tracks that chart the behind the scenes turmoil and eventual triumph of the recording sessions. Included on the album is a radical take on The Beatles' "The Inner Light".

While The Beatles didn't actually play on the original recording, The Grip Weeds veered away from a classical Indian Raga treatment for their version, instead re-imagining the song in a Rock context. Oddly, the band hadn't considered including the song on "How I Won The War" until Marty Scott from Jem Records - the band's new label - connected the dots.

"Marty pointed out that we had Private Grip Weed on the cover with an 'inner light' coming out of his chest," Reil said. "He was emphatic that we had to include it on the album."

The cover art for "How I Won The War" is an homage to John Lennon's portrayal of Private Grip Weed. "The message you draw from it could be that John Lennon is now a ball of light, a spirit," Reil said, "but you could also conclude that how you truly win a war is with love."

Instead of just covering a Beatles song, The Grip Weeds folded "The Inner Light" into the album's narrative. For a collection of songs about conflict, "The Inner Light" is the perfect summation of what the band had gone through and learned from their struggle. It's how they won their war.

"How I Won The War" by The Grip Weeds will be released by Jem Records on April 7th. It is available now for Pre Order from Amazon and iTunes with a pre-sale for fan club members beginning March 24th.

John Cena Goes All The Way In "Trainwreck," Almost

John Cena: I'm Almost All The Way Naked
WWE & Total Divas supporting player, John Cena won't be flashing his junk in the upcoming movie Trainwreck with the hilarious Amy Schumer.

Nope, as he extrapolated to Jimmy Kimmel Live: “I have a ‘big part’ because of the costume department, I was gifted a stunt penis.”

Wow! Now is that a gift that keeps on giving???

John plays Steven a self-obsessed hook-up for Amy's character whose unique version of bedroom talk is to sexualize his accomplishments at the gym while doing the deed.

There are many reasons Mr. Cena is a hunk other than the obvious. He is a very caring, thoughtful person who gives back and helps people.

One of my favorite things is how open he is about having a gay brother and the support he shows him and others in the community.

Nikki Bella is one lucky woman!

Trainwreck directed by comedy genius Judd Apatow will be released on July 17. I love Amy and I love John, I am so there! Check out the trailer below, it's hilarious!

Dudley Saunders - "Zero Out"

Dudley Saunders
Photo: Dean Carpenter
Dudley is back with his fourth video from IN THESE BOXES, Zero Out, here is a message from the artist::

Here is the fourth lyric video from IN THESE BOXES.  This is actually the beginning of the piece.  So, in a more perfect world, it would have been the first video I uploaded, not the fourth.  But life is messy. Art is messier.

Here's the text that opens the performance:
"When I was 19, I moved from Kentucky to New York’s East Village.  And I began to see something on the street I didn’t understand.

I’d see boxes, full of the contents of someone’s entire life, stuffed in the garbage cans of tenement apartment buildings.  Boxes full of things, like a twenty year collection of playbills, black leather harnesses and unframed paintings, posters, clothes still on their hangers, handwritten letters and spiral notebooks and bills and the odd objects that could only be someone's mementos.  All of it, stuffed into the garbage.  I saw this over and over again.

                                                                       Zero Out

Then years passed.  And in the summer of 1991, my two ex-lovers died within three months of each.  And this was bad, of course, but it was something else that had my attention.

I realized that all the people who had witnessed our lives together were also dead.  These were the Plague Years, and my life had just become extinct.

And I finally understood about those boxes in the garbage: people had died of AIDS, their families had abandoned them, and their friends were all dead.  The objects I still owned were the only evidence that we had existed.  I alone knew the stories inside them.  And I wanted to reach back through time, into that garbage, into those boxes, and save the objects and find a way to tease out their missing stories.  To keep them from disappearing.

Faye, Connie, My Sister, My Daughter

Connie Britton: I'm Faye!
We go together like Connie Britton & Faye Resnick, huh?

Yes, it's true Connie Britton & Ryan Murphy are reuniting, and it feels so good.

Connie as you American Horror Story fans know was in it's virgin season: Murder House, the current star of Nashville will portray Faye Resnick, who Camille Grammer notoriously described as: "The morally corrupt Faye Resnick," on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

Britton will get her moral corruption on the freshman season of Murphy's American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson.

As you may recall, Resnick was OJ's slain wife Nicole Brown Simpson's friend.

OJ was acquitted - and the killer has never been found...go figure.

"Love, Hope & Tyranny" With Lucia Comnes

Lucia Comnes - Fiddling Around
Lucia Comnes "Love, Hope & Tyranny"
Album from the fiddler / singer / songwriter coming  April 15th

Atmospheric roots music crossing the genres of
Americana, Folk, Celtic, Bluegrass, Rock & Alternative.

Lucia's voice is "singular... embedded with soul and spirit."
- San Francisco Chronicle

Recently I had the pleasure of chatting with the talented Lucia Comnes about her upcoming album Love, Hope & Tyranny. I have heard it and it is quite a musical accomplishment. So huddle up to your computer and stay for a bit and get to know this one of a kind artist.

MS: You got back from Italy recently, correct?

LC: Yeah, just last night.

MS: Jet lagged?

LC: You know it's not so bad. It's basically one long day because you gain nine hours. I got home in the evening and then I went to bed, coming back, it's not so bad. Some people have a hard time with it, but I'm doing pretty good (laughs).

MS: Good. So Love, Hope & Tyranny is your fourth album?

LC: In terms of full albums it's really my third. I put an EP out a couple of years ago, which is not a full album, it's just a three song EP.

MS: Wow! That's awfully slight, even for an EP.

LC: (laughs) I know, I had to do something. Things sometimes take longer than you want them to. Like this is the album I had hoped would have come out at that time a couple of years ago. But with fundraising and getting everything where you wanted it to be, sometimes it just takes more time.

MS: Your music fits so many categories to me, you hear varying styles in every song when you listen to it. For example I hear rock, country and pop all in one of your compositions.

LC: Absolutely! If you look at the references I use from other artists and other songs on this album it's a pretty wide range of styles. I definitely don't try to fit into a box and it would probably help me if I did more so. But that's just not what I'm passionate about.

MS: I have a music background, but your music process is so eclectic I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how it works.Especially in your song No Hiding Place, please explain it to me.
LC: Yeah, yeah. Well you know it's interesting because I don't go about the creative process with a final end product in mind. I have an inspiration and an idea, I start working and collaborate with another musician sometimes. Obviously you have some control over what the end product is...but sometimes you're like "Wow! I didn't plan on it sounding like this, but it does and that really works." With that particular song it was a co-write, I had been covering a Gillian Welch song, Rock of Ages which is a song that she and David Rawlings wrote. The lyrics were taken from old American Appalachian Spirituals. I loved the grooves on that song, but I didn't want to cover a song on my album, I wanted an original song. Their original song was a slow song, with my band we made a kind of upbeat rockin' version of it. I was inspired by what they had done by going back to old Appalachian Spirituals. I did a lot of research, mainly online of the lyrics to those spirituals. We wanted to make the song sound like it was coming from and older time rather than just writing lyrics. So I did a lot of research on old lyrics, put a lot of lyrics that I liked it was like a collage. I took a lyric here and a put it there and another lyric from somewhere else...and came up with a new story. At the same time I was working with the co-producer Gawain Matthews and he is a guitarist we had the groove and we knew we wanted to have the same melodic feel. A little bluesy, pentatonic, it's open it doesn't have a defined common major or minor third which is something I really love! We added so many layers that it kind of developed into this Louisiana kind of swamp groove. That is the kind of thing that makes me excited when I am working in the studio.

MS: Wow!

LC: Every song is different. Take the next song, the second track Burning Eden. It's something that I wrote completely on my own, I was off on a song writing retreat by myself on a island and writing. I wrote the lyrics and the chorus to that and brought it to the studio and we recorded it as you hear it. Every song is totally different.

MS: You also have a big imagination and the imagery in your songs is very strong.

LC: Thank you.

MS: One thing that is a big part of your work is environmental causes.

LC: If I had to point to one big source of inspiration, I'm inspired when I am in nature. Taking long walks in the mountains on the beach, being in the silence, but hearing the sounds of nature. I'm just as passionate about nature and the wilderness as I am about playing music. In my opinion Global Warming is the issue of my generation. I address it a lot in my music, so if you are not an artist and you are not addressing Global Warming, it's like: "Hello? Where are you?"

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!

Yes, this is the official title of the 3rd Sharknado - it brings back the round of usual suspects. Our intrepid hero Ian Ziering, his estranged wife, Tara Reid. Not to mention a whole slew of awesome co-stars, like Bo Derek as Tara Reid's Mom for one.

There will be high profile cameos galore such as: Mark Cuban as the President of the United States. With Political commentator (if you want to call it that) Ann Coulter as the President of Vice.

Expect off the wall moments as well as photo bombs and some slapdash editing all the things we love about a Sharknado!

"I feel like I'm 24," KC told The Miami Herald in advance to his hometown show March 20 at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, FL. "Forty years later I feel like I'm back in 1975. Coming to 2015, and the 40th anniversary of 'Get Down Tonight' going to No. 1, has been an interesting process. That creative flow we got going in '73, '74, that's what I'm feeling now. I know that in 1984 we wanted to get away from it all, we were tired of it all, but this [new music] has reinvigorated me, and I think I'm writing better than I did back then. Lyrically, I think it's better, [and] it's much more mature. I don't know how to explain it, but it feels good."

Featuring covers of songs by sixties legends like Ben E. King, The Righteous Brothers, Jackie DeShannon, Aaron Neville and others, KC says this new album Feeling You! The 60s stems from an inspiration to pay tribute to those songs who helped shape him into the revolutionary artist he is today.

TBT - Pretty Little Liars "Taking This One To The Grave"

Watch Your Back Mona! Ooooops! Too Late!
Let's revisit the Pretty Little Liars episode that was the catalyst for sending all of the girls to the pokey this past week. Look it's Mona Vanderwaal moments before she is murdered, fresh as a daisy and ripe for the picking off.

So my weekly check in with my niece Shauna Waters yielded nothing but confusion. I mean seriously everyone is a suspect at this point the way things are being portrayed. Heck I even had suspicions about Aria's Mom Ella this past week.

The most obvious suspect at this point is Andrew Campbell, but as we know in the land of "The Liars" nothing is that obvious, or perhaps it is...

According to Marlene King the "Big A" is someone who has been around since the first episode and it is someone we care about.

So I enlisted the sleuthing powers of my other niece Lindley Waters who recently viewed said episode and here is what she had to say:

"I have no clue. The problem with the first season is that they are still suspicious of Ian, who dies and,Toby and Jenna. So I dunno. I'm hoping it isn't one of the liars."

There you have it, Shauna, Lindley and Myself are stumped. So the three of us have decided to quit trying to figure it out - we can't wait until this Tuesday!
