Sunday Funday

Dance!

Well here we go the last Sunday of April 2023, while the year is whizzing by we need to celebrate today in true Sunday Funday style!

Thus I hereby bequeath you a gaggle of dancing aliens. You know the ones made famous straight outta Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien that spawned many a sequel? Most notably James Cameron's Aliens, yeah those multiple creatures just keep giving us chills that multiply, never divide.

So let's make like these aliens today and shake our groove thang, shall we?

"Leslie's Dream"

Leslie Medford

Independent Project Records (IPR) is set to release their first ever digital-only single which will be out on 28th April. Special occasions require special songs, and what you’re about to hear is a slice of moody, brooding psych with a motorik heart and a throbbing political conscience. “Leslie’s Dream” is a rare new recording from Leslie Medford, the maverick leader of 80s San Francisco psychedelic journeymen The Ophelias. According to David Fricke (Rolling Stone, MOJO), The Ophelias were “modernists steeped in the vintage, local ethos of a late set at the Fillmore Auditorium - a potent tab of futurist acid-pop…laced with post-punk menace”.

In 2022 Independent Project Records released a well-received retrospective titled Bare Bodkin, charting The Ophelias’ genre-defying journey (“a stunning summation of The Ophelias’ offbeat oeuvre”, said Shindig! Magazine awarding the album 5/5 stars). Almost 40 years later, Medford is still busy conjuring spacey image-rich reveries, so get ready for “Leslie’s Dream”! Check it out here.

If the USA was eligible for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest “Leslie’s Dream” would likely win the thing. Then again, in a perfect world Leslie Medford’s latest song wouldn’t be necessary like it is. We at Independent Project Records believe Medford hit the vein of the zeitgeist whilst asleep, and the track might just snowball onto summer dancefloors around the continent and beyond given the weather these days and this current atmosphere of impending chaos. Medford led The Ophelias (research them!) in the 1980s, and like that band Leslie still dreams big. Infectious and memorable, “Leslie’s Dream” aims to mobilize thought, booty-shaking, and an ecstatic, whooping, mosh pit of change.

Wanna See What's Under My Umbrella?
Michael Shinafelt

This week has been all about low vibration energy, hey it's the place where you find some balance Minions. It's actually the first week since my Mom's passing that I have felt balanced for an entire week.

It's a terrific feeling and while I know I am sure to topple at least I have a point of reference to migrate back to, now about that red umbrella over my head...

Evil Dead Rise is fun, creepy AF and an overall great escape! I highly recommend it, 4 Deadites Up out of 4!!! Also it has one of the greatest title cards of all time.

Let's romanticize lunch today, shall we???

Woah. How did we not guess him?!

Did you hear? Hugh Grant is an Oompa Loompa in the new prequel Wonka starring Timothy Chalamet

The only Tuckers allowed are Drag Queens in this house!!!

Jodie Foster/Judge Judy erotica, discuss...

The green M&M did it with the candlestick in the study

Kim Kardashian officiated Lukas Gage & Chris Appleton's wedding in Vegas, the more you know

Woman Crush of the Week -  comedy legend Carol Burnett who just turned 90 years young and is still slaying

Most people listen to reply, not understand, truth!

Initially I wasn't interested, but the more I see of the upcoming live action The Little Mermaid  makes actually want to go!

Hump Day & Chill

Alyssa Sutherland
as
Ellie

"I'm free now from all you titty sucking parasite" - Ellie

Saw the Evil Dead Rise this past weekend and loved it! It was fun and the escape I needed from reality for a an hour and half. This was due in no small part to Alyssa Sutherland's expert turn as as Deadite mother of three Ellie.

Thus as I'm sure you have guessed by the above image taken behind the scenes of Evil Dead Rise we are going to give a big Hump Day & Chill cheers to Ms. Sutherland and her CAF (Creepy As F#ck) performance in the current hit movie.

Nobody does it better and turns on her children quite the way she does.

Mommy's with the maggots now...indeed!!!

Wave Your Tongue In The Air Like You Don't Care...

Lick It Up!
Billy Idol & Demi Moore

Today I wanted to do something totally different head and give you all a virtual tongue bath courtesy of Demi Moore getting literally thirsty for Billy Idol.

Who knows where this was taken, and who actually cares, their chemistry is shall we say electrifying!!! What I want to know is how much further did this actually go?

Being it is obviously back in the day when both were at the top of their game and things were different I'm going to speculate that the deal was sealed.

Oh to have been a fly on that wall...

Pants on the floor indeed!

All that matters is the present. With this mantra in mind I took this selfie yesterday so I could look at it today and remember the moment and reflect on it and what it means right here, right now.

It's interesting the things that come to mind looking at this in the moment shot that I spontaneously took. So many thoughts and feelings attached to one present moment. We humans are complex creatures that is for sure, so let's enjoy the ride Minions!!!

I can tell you that you think I'm right for you, the more you know...

Hump Day & Chill

Do You Have Any Grey Poupon?

Look it's Norman Bates with two female dancers from the Ziegfeld Follies perhaps?  Or maybe not...

Whatever the case this whimsical photo was clearly taken on set during the making of Psycho. I'm not quite sure what would inspire this shot while filming a movie along these lines but I'm quite sure there is an interesting back story which I plan to research once I have more time to do so.

This being stated whimsy is the tone of today's Hump Day & Chill and whimsy there shall be all day and night until the clock strikes twelve.

Drag Queen Of The Year

Shaun Vadella

Docu-series stars drag icons Alaska Thunderf*ck and Lola LeCroix

2023 DRAG QUEEN OF THE YEAR COMPETITION AWARD CONTEST COMPETITION PAGEANT

TO TAKE PLACE LIVE IN-PERSON SUNDAY, MAY 14 AT THE MONTALBAN THEATRE IN LOS ANGELES

OUTtv, the leading LGBTQ+ streaming platform, has announced the premiere date for “Behind the Drag Queen of the Year Pageant Competition Award Contest Competition”, a new docu-series that goes behind the scenes of legendary drag queens Alaska Thunderf*ck and Lola LeCroix’s Drag Queen Of The Year contest. The new season will premiere on

Friday April 21, 2023 in the US.

“Behind the Drag Queen of the Year Pageant Competition Award Contest Competition”

follows renowned drag queens Alaska Thunderf*ck and her creative drag partner Lola

LeCroix as they put together their annual drag pageant to crown the Drag Queen Of

The Year. The docu-series provides a detailed look into the planning and creativity that

occurs backstage of drag competitions, and closely follows the duo as they come up

against challenges and setbacks, including a nightmare in tech rehearsals with just

hours until showtime. Contestants on the show include Andrew Barret Cox,

Bambi Banks-Couleé, Dvvsk, Militia Scunt, Neon Calypso, Ramona Slick and Twink

Trash.

Alaska Thunderf*ck and Lola LeCroix added: “Our goal with The Drag Queen of the

Year Pageant Competition Award Contest Competition is to provide a platform for Drag

artists who come from a variety of unique Drag perspectives. In a time where the

artform of Drag is under attack, amplifying queer voices is more important than ever,

and we’re looking forward to continuing this Pageant’s legacy. We’re grateful to all of

the incredible 2022 DQOY contestants, our crew behind the scenes, and to OUTtv and

Froot.tv who, through this series, will show the Pageant from all sides-- capturing the

stressful, chaotic, and ultimately inspirational essence of Drag Queen of the Year.”

Philip Webb, COO of OUTtv, said: “This show is every bit as chaotic and fun as its

name suggests – giving audiences a back stage pass to one of the most iconic

competitions in drag! In the face of bigoted and damaging legislation placed on drag

performances in the US, we’re proud to show the world the creativity, artistry, and

positivity of all forms of drag. There’s nobody more knowledgeable than Alaska and Lola

to show us the immense amount of hard work that goes into these events and to guide

us through the sea of glitter, wigs - and claws - which inevitably come out for the annual

pageant.”

The six-episode series is a Froot and OUTtv Original produced by PEG Productions.

The show will be available exclusively on the OUTtv Apple TV Channel, the OUTtv Roku Channel and OUTtv.com in the US; OUTtv linear, OUTtvGo.com and the OUTtv Amazon Prime Channel in Canada and FROOT.tv in the UK and Ireland a week later (April 29, 2023).

And now, flying in the face of economic meltdown and a catastrophic political landscape, The Drag Queen of the Year Pageant  Competition Award Contest Competition is returning for its 5thth incarnation on Sunday, May 14, 2023 live and in-person at The Montalban Theatre in Hollywood.  Tickets are on-sale now HERE

A Subliminal Existentialist

Sydney Pollack: A Subliminal Existentialist

by Wes D. Gehring

“Gehring remains supreme in film comedy scholarship” - Choice

“Just about anything with film historian and media writer Wes D. Gehring’s name on it will be of quality.”
- Cinema Retro

"Gehring has a breezy and playful writing style. I found myself chucking aloud several times. His prose is also, at times, wickedly cynical...referring to the kidnapped Betty in the 1934 version of The Man Who Knew Too Much as a 'losable daughter.' " - The Hitchcock Annual

Filmmaker Sydney Pollack found his greatest success as the director of such celebrated pictures as They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, The Way We WereTootsie, and Out of Africa which won Pollack Oscars for both director and producer. Pollack found early success as an actor, an acting teacher, and later as a producer. In ensuing years, he would be praised as a character actor, from Dustin Hoffman's scene stealing agent in Tootsie to a sympathetic cynic in Eyes Wide Shut.

Forever curious, Pollack often used these films to see how other significant directors plied their trade. Trying to balance time for family and his many other soon-to-be-explored talents, Pollack's ability to recognize quality material also made him a producer of such memorable works as The Fabulous Baker BoysSense and Sensibility, The Talented Mr. RipleyIris, and Michael Clayton. This work weaves the story of Pollack's life and career through ten of his films and covers his relationship with two actors; teacher and mentor, Burt Lancaster, and Robert Redford, with whom he frequently collaborated

Peter Evans, Emeritus Professor of Film Studies, Queen Mary University of London, recently wrote the author, "You certainly make an excellent case for his [ Pollack's ]re-evaluation, [ while ] providing your characteristic mixture of scholarship and sharp analysis."

"Dormir Pour Rever"

Lo-Flo Records Presents

New Single, “Dormir Pour Rêver,”

Written in 1972 by Composer Jane McNealy

Featuring Emmanuelle Raoul-Duval

Dormir Pour Rêver,” was inspired by the Tahitien mural, “D'où venons-nous ? Que sommes-nous ? Où allons-nous ?” or translated, “Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?” painted by the artist, Paul Gauguin.

When composer Jane McNealy and collaborator Alice Kuhns first started researching Gauguin’s life with the idea of turning it into a musical, McNealy recalled, "The more I learned about Gauguin’s life, the more there were so many unanswered questions: What happens when we look back and reevaluate our life? Are we filled with regret and questions that cannot be answered? How do we resolve our doubts and justify our existence? Does it matter?"

Although "I Lay Me Down To Sleep,” written in 1971, was never used in the musical, it was later translated into French, by her mother, Ann McNealy, in 1972. Fluent in French, and a poet in her own right, Ann’s translation, "Dormir Pour Rêver," is uniquely original. As Jane likes to say, “‘Dormir Pour Rêver’ was born with my mother’s own deeply creative interpretation and her own life questions.”

The composition is beautifully sung by Emmanuelle Raoul-Duval and accompanied by Ari Fisher’s elegant string and horn arrangement.

For the non French speakers who want to dive deeper into the lyrics, you can check out the video for “Dormir Pour Rêver,” produced by Julie Flogeac, which includes English subtitles.

Out and available to stream and watch on your preferred service!
