The Bad Ups

Philadelphia's The Bad Ups will release their upcoming LP, 'Life of Sin' on September 27 via Jump Start Records.

Stream the new lyric video for "Ego Trip" here: https://youtu.be/8Rftu45M_zY

Stream on Soundcloud: https://on.soundcloud.com/BsmNX6daJuKDoNH68

Frontman Travis McKayle says,"'Ego Trip' is about finding your place in the world while staying true to yourself."

Pre-order the album here: https://thebadups.bandcamp.com/album/life-of-sin

The four-piece punk band draws heavy inspiration from the Epitaph and Fat Wreck bands of the 90s and early 2000s, while also embracing the rhythms of traditional ska and reggae. Channeling the spirit of Bad Brains, they blend these genres into a unique sound.

McKayle, who is of Jamaican descent, named the band The Bad Ups after the Caribbean patois term “baddup”—which means to treat someone poorly or violently. This name reflects their intense musical style and their ability to connect with the term's cultural roots.

Since their formation in 2018, The Bad Ups have built a dedicated following and shared the stage with prominent acts like Face to Face, The Bouncing Souls, The Adicts, and Street Dogs. Their versatile sound appeals to various punk subcultures, from ska to oi, making them a versatile addition to many lineups.

The Bad Ups are gearing up for a national and international tour to support their debut LP, “Life of Sin.”

Upcoming Shows:

September 28- Landsdale, PA (record release show) @ Round Guys

October 24- Philadelphia, PA @ The Fire

Careful What You Wish For

Stream "Careful What You Wish For" HERE:

https://orcd.co/careful

Front man Gizz Lazlo (former drummer of U.K. Subs, Dr. Know and The Freeze) says, ""Careful What You Wish For" is a story about unrequited love. A story about someone who loves too deeply. A person who believes in true love but is lost in an ocean of love, and suddenly realizes that they're not the only person in their lover's eyes, life, and heart. It's about going to your lover's home to surprise them with a weekend getaway and seeing someone else there who's known for their past as not a good person in their previous relationships. Someone who was told that that other person was just a friend, and then realized they were being lied to over and over again. It's about wondering what to do - run or fight? In this story, the jilted lover decides to walk away but leaves a message behind. A message of Karma. No one in their right mind wants to see their ex physically hurt, but for an idealist dreamer, there has to be that moment when you find out that your ex has been left behind the way you knew it was going to end, and you can't help but feel that feeling of reprieve in that you're not the only one whose heart was broken. So if you're cheating on your mate, seeing someone behind their back, or just flirting with someone else and thinking you can do better? There's always the chance that your new "toy" will in turn do everything you've done to your ex. It's not hard to love someone, but today it seems hard to keep someone in your life and keep that loving flame ablaze. So be careful what you wish for."

Moon At Noon

Stream "Moon at Noon" HERE: https://orcd.co/moonatnoon

Frontman Gizz Lazlo (Dr. Know, U.K. Subs, The Freeze, Dead Lazlo’s Place) says, ""Moon at Noon" was written a few days after my dad's first major heart attack in May of 2018. I was sitting on my parent's porch while my dad lay in the hospital in a coma for 6 days. As I sat there confused and worried about what was going to happen, I needed to write something to calm my nerves a bit. Luis had sent me a demo that I'd listened to a few weeks prior. While I was listening to the music over and over on my headphones, chain-smoking trying to distract myself, certain phrases kept coming back as I was humming melodies over the music. A few hours later I'd finished these lyrics and just left them alone as I went back and forth to the hospital trying to deal with my mother and relatives who started arriving from Mexico to see my dad. When my dad was discharged from the hospital I couldn't sleep thinking that this may happen again. About a week after my dad was home I found myself in my studio wondering what these lyrics would sound like to the music. I spent about an hour behind the mic recording the original demo for this song. I sent it to Luis and we instantly knew we HAD to record this song. It's definitely not something we usually write together. That's the thing I love about writing songs with Luis is that we both don't care what people are going to think about them. If "we" like them then let's record them. Everything we've written in the past few years are songs about the dark side of life. Not everything is rainbows and butterflies. As much as we want it to be, it just isn't. My hope is that whoever listens to our songs finds something that they can hold on to if they ever feel down. I grew up with songs that helped me through some tough times. Maybe, just maybe we can help someone through their personal trauma with our songs. I've been close to the end many times, but I'm still here. So I guess the best advice I can give is to - Never Lose Hope!! You are loved!!"

"Moon at Noon" also features a roaring guitar solo guest appearance by Mike Williamson from L.A.-based band Jr. Juggernaut.

Upcoming shows:

2/3 Sardine / San Pedro

2/4 Redwood Bar / DTLA

2/18 Supply & Demand / Long Beach

For Closure began as a simple studio project, a brief opportunity to relay some finality for multi-decade veterans hailing from the punk rock scenes of the Los Angeles County suburbs, who had desired a last hurrah before they closed shop on their previous bands. But what arose from a “goodbye” project was an assortment of compositions so compelling and novel, there was a change of heart in closing the book on the past and instead, an excitement brewing about the future.

Fronted by vocalist Gizz Lazlo—whose prior contributions include Dr. Know, U.K. Subs, The Freeze and his namesake, Dead Lazlo’s Place, plus continued memberships in a bevy of bands too numerous to detail—the ensemble’s material stems from a pairing of songwriters Lazlo and Luis Estefania (F.Y.P., Rhythm Collision, Buford), who most recently were together in longtime San Fernando Valley-based outfit For Sale. The dissolution of For Sale left Lazlo and Estefania with a backlog of yet-unrecorded material and a decision to continue establishing their songwriting partnership via a new outlet—hence, For Closure.

Armed with a batch of songs, polished and perfected for tracking, Lazlo and Estefania entered the recording studio named Studio in Redlands, California with producer/drummer Wal Rashidi (Jr. Juggernaut, Revolution Mother, Turning Violet) in the summer of 2022 to begin the sessions that would ultimately sprout the band’s first single, “Carousel,” to be released via Mindpower Records. This fruitful batch of material led to a second session in winter 2023, to complete the band’s forthcoming debut full-length album, to be released in 2024.

For Closure has since moved its material from studio to stage, as it made its live debut this past fall, via shows in the Los Angeles area, which also feature guitarist Marc Maxey (Sloth Fist, The Killing Flame, Justice League) and bassist Steve Wilenkin (Life in a Burn Clinic, Dead Man’s Life, IDK).

What launched as an exercise in finality is now only the beginning of this new musical collective. It’s time for For Closure’s grand opening.

Blowfuse

Blowfuse

Influenced by 80’s and 90’s punk rock waves and the skateboard lifestyle, Blowfuse crafts a style all its own, mixing the aggressiveness of hardcore punk, the catchy melodies of 90’s punk rock, the powerful classic rock riffs, with acidic and paranoid lyrics.

The new single "Move On" is the first off the band's upcoming 4th studio album 'The 4th Wall' out March 1st, 2024.

"Move On is a call to action and change. Its direct message conveys a sense of empowerment and the necessity of freeing oneself from the past to find a new direction in life.", says singer Oscar Puig. "The detrimental habit of complaining and self-pitying won't do anything but increase frustration. Only by accepting reality and taking responsibility can you navigate towards a new direction."

"Move On" is otu now via SBÄM, HFMN Crew, Epidemic Records and Infected Records.

About Blowfuse:

Nowadays, Blowfuse is one of the most known and active punk rock bands of their country, Spain. The band, hailing from Barcelona, was founded around 2008 and began playing shows under the name Godfarts. While gaining renown as Godfarts they released their first album “Messed Up Minds” in 2010. The band was renamed to Blowfuse in 2013. The same year they released “Into The Spiral”, which was recorded, produced and mixed by Darian Rundall, who also worked with bands like Pennywise, TSOL, Suicidal Tendencies and U.S. Bombs.

They have toured with bands like Pennywise, 7 Seconds, and played all over Europe. Sometimes even for a length of more than two months. Blowfuse also played with bands such as Adolescents, Face to Face, Authority Zero, A Wilhelm Scream, Youth Brigade, The Casualties, The Unseen and many others. In 2013 they even played the mainstage at the prominent Resurrection Fest, sharing the stage with Bad Religion, Millencolin and Biohazard.

Being as young as they are, living one of their best moments, working on new projects, touring, filming their peculiar videos… And of course, totally committed to what they loved, and still love, music.

"Leslie's Dream"

Leslie Medford

Independent Project Records (IPR) is set to release their first ever digital-only single which will be out on 28th April. Special occasions require special songs, and what you’re about to hear is a slice of moody, brooding psych with a motorik heart and a throbbing political conscience. “Leslie’s Dream” is a rare new recording from Leslie Medford, the maverick leader of 80s San Francisco psychedelic journeymen The Ophelias. According to David Fricke (Rolling Stone, MOJO), The Ophelias were “modernists steeped in the vintage, local ethos of a late set at the Fillmore Auditorium - a potent tab of futurist acid-pop…laced with post-punk menace”.

In 2022 Independent Project Records released a well-received retrospective titled Bare Bodkin, charting The Ophelias’ genre-defying journey (“a stunning summation of The Ophelias’ offbeat oeuvre”, said Shindig! Magazine awarding the album 5/5 stars). Almost 40 years later, Medford is still busy conjuring spacey image-rich reveries, so get ready for “Leslie’s Dream”! Check it out here.

If the USA was eligible for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest “Leslie’s Dream” would likely win the thing. Then again, in a perfect world Leslie Medford’s latest song wouldn’t be necessary like it is. We at Independent Project Records believe Medford hit the vein of the zeitgeist whilst asleep, and the track might just snowball onto summer dancefloors around the continent and beyond given the weather these days and this current atmosphere of impending chaos. Medford led The Ophelias (research them!) in the 1980s, and like that band Leslie still dreams big. Infectious and memorable, “Leslie’s Dream” aims to mobilize thought, booty-shaking, and an ecstatic, whooping, mosh pit of change.

Sloth Fist

Sloth Fist

"Will blister the inside of your f’ing skull if you’re not too careful."- Up To Hear Music

Dallas, TX, Sloth Fist are a 5 piece punk / rock ‘n’ roll band that combine the melodic sense of Descendents and Teenage Bottlerocket with the fierceness of bands like Motorhead and Turbonegro. The result is an eclectic mix of songs that will satisfy anyone who likes their music hard and heavy, but still catchy with hooks galore.

With lyrics written mainly during the pandemic, the band's new EP 'Bombs Away' (out now on Mindpower Records) takes a much darker turn than past efforts.

The band has released the EP's latest single "BOMBS / Spit It Out," the latter of which is an unreleased B-side.

Of the track, the band says "Someone ever tell you a story, but they just can't get to the point? Spit it out already!"

Sloth Fist will be playing a show w/Riverboat Gamblers and Nervebreakers at Three Links in Dallas on Sunday, November 6th.

The Rundown Kreeps

Los Angeles Ska/Punk Trio Rundown Kreeps’ Pay Homage To The Beatles' 'Help!' In New Video "NOLA”

Tour Dates Announced; Playing Fest on October 27

"This one combines sugar-sweet bubblegum pop melodies and punk energy in a Ramonesy fashion- Brooklynvegan

Screen Shot 2022-08-26 at 10.40.48 AM

""NOLA" observes and compares the theme of escapism in relation to the banality of everyday life. Whether it's work stress, financial struggle, emotional hurt, or the hunger to accomplish a dream; we're all either running towards or away from somewhere. Recorded and mixed by Jonathan Mireles (audio engineer for Travis Barker as well as Machine Gun Kelly's "Tickets to My Downfall).

With this music video we wanted to pay homage to our musical heroes The Beatles; as well as subtly remain on the theme of escapism. The idea is that instead of making a video in which the subject matter is asking for help; we'd remake the "Help!" music video as close to shot for shot as possible". -Rundown Kreeps

"Treason"

D.O.A. Announce "Treason", Their Eighteenth Studio Album
Coming March 15th via Sudden Death Records

East Coast US Tour Dates With DEAD KENNEDYS in March + more dates

If an actor or a reality show host can become president and wreak havoc around the world, then surely musicians have a time honored duty of reacting to that and speaking up for regular people. Punk rock legends D.O.A. have decided to do just that. That's why you have the new D.O.A. album: Treason.

Joey Shithead Keithley, Canada's Godfather of Punk, has been getting sick of the dismaying news coming out of world capitals like Washington, Moscow, Beijing, Tehran, Pyongyang etc., so he decided to come up with D.O.A.'s musical reaction to this crap and stand up against corruption, warmongering, racism, sexism and global warming.

So here it is: Treason, it's the band's eighteenth album. It takes off in full frenzy with "All the President's Men" with Keithley exclaiming It's time to put them in the pen. Then D.O.A. quickly launches into a modern punk anthem "Wait Till Tomorrow" a look at the brutal treatment of refugees.

But never lost on D.O.A., is that part of their mantra that is punk rock humor, hence they have spawned: "It Was D.O.A." an uproarious piss take on unsuspecting musicians that will soon learn the tough lessons of the road: the D.O.A. members themselves.

D.O.A.
Of course with an album named Treason you would expect some comment on President Donald Trump. So the Men of Action have taken one of their all-time classics and come up with new lyrics. They have reworked "Fucked Up Ronnie" and the result is "Fucked Up Donald" and it's a blistering 73 seconds of mayhem!

Along the way Treason flips the corrupt system the bird with wild tunes like: "Gonna Set You Straight," "Just Got Back From the USA" and "It's Treason." There's also an absolutely ripping version of fellow Canadian Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My" where D.O.A. takes a unique approach that has anguish and fire at the same time.

On Treason D.O.A pulls no punches and nor should they. What you get is an uncontrollable punk rock riot that seems to breathe fire, the way punk was meant to be.

Pre-order the LP or CD at Sudden Death Records.

"Hardcore 81"

D.O.A.'s "Hardcore 81" Receives 2019
Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize Designation

The Polaris Music Prize has announced D.O.A.'s Hardcore 81 and Oscar Peterson Trio's Night Train albums have received 2019 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize designation.
D.O.A.'s genre-defining hardcore punk album from 1981 was chosen over 11 other nominated albums in the Re:Sound-supported Heritage Prize public voting category, which ran this year from September 17 to October 18. This marks the first time a British Columbia artist has won the Heritage Prize. The Oscar Peterson Trio's 1963 album by the legendary jazz pianist was selected by a 10- member Polaris Heritage Prize jury made up of music media and historians.
"Congratulations to these two winning artists. You've created important memorable recordings that have had a lasting impact on the musical landscape. I have tremendous appreciation for the work that has gone into creating these timeless albums," said Gary Slaight, President and CEO of Slaight Communications.
The winners appreciated that these albums remain so relevant with the jury and the public decades after their initial releases.
"It's pretty cool for D.O.A. and our fans to have Hardcore 81 recognized by Polaris. When it was released, we never realized that this album would give birth to the hardcore music genre and make an impact around the world," said D.O.A.'s Joey 'Shithead' Keithley. "So this is an amazing moment for us."

D,O,A,
D.O.A. and the Oscar Peterson Trio now join a list of past Heritage Prize winners which include the likes of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Alanis Morissette, Peaches, Glenn Gould, Dream Warriors and Harmonium.

"Re:Sound is proud to sponsor the Polaris Heritage Prize for the third consecutive year," said Ian MacKay, Re:Sound's president. "By spanning numerous decades and musical genres and incorporating both the jury and the public's selections, we see winners who reflect Canada's diverse and dynamic musical history. The shortlist and winners reinforce why we do the work we do to help build a thriving and sustainable music industry in Canada."

Like the Polaris Music Prize, winners and nominees for the Heritage Prize are Canadian albums of the artistic distinction, without regard to musical genre or commercial popularity. This is the Polaris version of a hall of fame where we try to determine who would have been nominated or won the Prize before it began in 2006.
The Office of Gilbert Li, who curated the 2019 Polaris Music Prize posters and the posters for the 2018 Heritage Prize winners, will once again select the visual artists who'll pay tribute to the two winning records in the form of Polaris Posters.
The 2019 Polaris Heritage Prize jury included Stephen Cooke, Del Cowie, Francella Fiallos, Stuart Henderson, Bob Klanac, Valerie Lessard, Trevor Risk, Tabbasum Siddiqui and Andrea Warner. Mary Dickie was the jury foreperson.

TIME TO FIGHT BACK AND CHANGE THIS WORLD

"Born In The Bronx"

Handsome Dick Manitoba releases his first solo album,
"Born In The Bronx"

Available Now via MVD Entertainment Group

Handsome Dick Manitoba was the leader of the NYC punk group "The Dictators" starting in 1975. The group went through a series of break ups and name changes but always with Manitoba as front man. This is his first solo release and is backed by a lineup of stellar musicians including P.F. Sloan, Michael Shrieve, Simon Kirke and others. Sloan backs him here on his opus "Eve of Destruction" playing harmonica, guitar and on background vocals.

He was also an on air DJ on Sirius / XM for 14 years, being recognized by The Village Voice as "Best Satellite Radio DJ" in 2005. Manitoba was also lead singer for MC5 starting in 2005, after the death of lead singer Rob Tyner and remained in that capacity until they disbanded after the death of bassist Michael Davis in 2012.

Manitoba now has a podcast called "You Don't Know Dick"...and the best is yet to come!

Producer / Co-writer Jon Tiven says:

"We wanted to make a record that was contemporary punk 'n' roll with a love for the sound of our early heroes like Wynonie Harris, Bert Berns, and the Beach Boys. I brought in a few of my Nashville friends to play and sing on it----Buddy Miller, Harry Stinson, Beth Hooker, Shannon Pollard, Chuck Mead, Donte M'Shawn---as well as some old friends to kick the skins Mickey Curry, Mat Reale, Simon Kirke and Mike Shrieve. Our beach song, "Surfside," was injected with a direct dose of the California Sun by transcendental poet Stephen J. Kalinich, the only lyricist to work with Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson (as well as Mike Love and Stephen Marks).

I suggested we cut a new version of my pal the late P.F. Sloan's classic anthem "Eve Of Destruction," and Handsome Dick was all-in. I even managed to fly in some harmony vocals, harmonica, and acoustic guitar from P.F. himself from some previous sessions I had done with him.

It took us a minute to find the right home for the record, but Arny Schorr stepped up with his Liberation Hall imprint and had all the enthusiasm we needed to see. So this is BORN IN THE BRONX. Germinated in NYC, manifested in Nashville, now available throughout the world... I hope y'all enjoy it!"
