Samhain

"No Tree Can Grow To Heaven,
Unless It's Roots Reach Down To Hell"
Michael Shinafelt

"Samhain marked the Celtic New Year, the end of summer, and the end of the harvest season. It also signaled the beginning of winter, which they associated with death. On this day, the Celts believed the veil between the living and the dead was especially thin"

I love the month of October and I love that the veil between the living and the dead thins as the month progresses towards Samhain, or as we like to defer to it, Halloween.

Here I am at the Tree of Life appropriately enough at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I'm at the juncture of Heaven and Hell awaiting Cerberus to take me on my journey.

I'm so excited!

Happy Halloween...

Visions Of Babysitters Screaming Danced In Their Heads...

Boo!
l -r
Annie, Laurie & Lynda

What would Halloween be without this iconic trio of Babysitters. So here they are straight outta Haddonfield, IL Laurie Strode, Lynda van der Klok & Annie Brackett!

As we know one of these things is not like the other and managed to escape to Notorious MM (Michael Myers) and become the ultimate Final Girl.

While the other two met their grisly fate at the hands of the Boogeyman.

Even thought Michael Myers is the ultimate Halloween icon (Laurie Strode is right up there with him) where would he be without these young women screaming in terror and being his victims? I ask you??? I'm waiting...forever I'm guessing.

So remember without Laurie, Lynda & Annie you are nothing Michael Myers!

So There.

Only 3 More Days Until...Halloween!

Michael Shinafelt

As you can see I am falling apart with excitement, only three more days until Halloween!

The month of October is my favorite time of the year as we celebrate Halloween all month long (well at least I do, and I know many of you f do as well) - honestly it's the most fun I have for 31 days straight of the whole year (not the only fun I said the MOST fun.)

What am I doing for the big H? Presently my only real plan is to attend yoga at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Then I'm going to let the spirits be my guide for the rest of the day and see where they take me.

I'm sure the journey will be exactly the Halloween experience I need. The spirits always know...

It's always Halloween in my soul!

Boo!

I Can Hold My Own Hand...

Write my name in the sand

Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand

Michael's Musings

"Come and play with us Michael, forever...and ever...and ever"
Michael Shinafelt

Look who I encountered in the lobby of Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) yesterday when I went and saw Killers of the Flower Moon...

The Shining Twins! They tried to lure me to the other side with their wonder twin powers, but my powers are stronger and I resisted and managed to get seated in theater four to see Martin Scorsese's latest before it was too late. Mess with me and find out Minions, time to muse!!!

Killers of the Flower Moon is a sweeping, ambitious piece of filmmaking, that being stated it should have been called Killers of my White Ass. It could have been trimmed by a half hour and worked jut fine as a three hour movie instead of the three and a half hour film it is

Next time I go to Alamo Drafthouse I'm going to take that trip to the other side with The Shining Twins, I'm curious

Girls have got balls. They're just a little higher up, that's all. The more you know...

Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly, indeed!

More Brains, discuss

Hexing, because murder is wrong

Did you hear that horror films may potentially have a VD disclaimer?! Google it, it's not what you think and in IMHO it's a bridge too far

Upon arrival in heaven do all the "day after pills" greet you? Asking for a friend

Woman Crush of the Week - One of my favorite, not to mention sexy performances in a horror movie is the cast to perfection Nastassja Kinski in Paul Schrader's redo of Cat People which I've seen at least ten times (most likely more)

Isn't it groundbreaking when Gays add a harness to their Halloween Costume? NOT!

So I see a lot of excited chatter about the horror flick The Sentinel being on Netflix like it's  some forgotten masterpiece. I saw that movie and remember it being quite the opposite

It's almost here...5 more days until Halloween!!!

Hump Day & Chill

In Your Eyes...

"In your eyes, The light, the heat (in your eyes), I am complete (in your eyes)" - In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel

When I saw this on the WWW I went completely head over heels for it. Much like the guy did in the movie this awesomely clever Halloween decor is based on.

That's correct Minions today we are going to Hump Day & Chill to skeleton Lloyd Dobler (John Cusak) from Say  Anything!

Last and only time I viewed Say Anything is when it first came out in theaters. That being stated the scene where Lloyd Dobler serenades Diane Court with a Boombox playing Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes is iconic.

Kudos to the clever individuals who came up with recreating it with a skeleton for Halloween.

Hump Day & Chill indeed...

Follow The Yellow Brick Road???

They're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz! Or perhaps they're off to see something totally different head? Always a possibility...

No this isn't your usual walk down the yellow brick road. Instead of Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion we have - Regan MacNeil, Ghostface, Jason and Freddy easing on down the golden path to the kingdom of Oz.

Hey, it's Halloween time after all, and a fitting group of horror icons seeking out, whatever it is they could be after.

Thus let's wish them well on their journey and those who don't can go to ______ I bet you know what belongs in that blank Minions 😉

Current Mood

Siouxsie Sioux

"We've come to scream in the happy house, We're in a dream in the happy house, We're all quite sane, This is the happy house -- we're happy here" - Happy House, Siouxsie And The Banshees

Yesterday I had brunch at my local The Kitchen, their Fish & Chips with Red Sangria is perfection on a Sunday morning. Whoever was in charge of music has great taste, it was Siouxsie And The Banshees the whole time I was there!!!

Thus upon arriving home I got on the computer and played one of the songs by them I love, but did not hear, Happy House.

I also realized with the world the way it is, this song reflects my Current Mood towards it.

"No" I'm not going to explain the song. Honestly I think the song title is quite self explanatory without even hearing a single lyric.

So I will do you one better then a song explanation, hit the video after the jump! Do it and do it now!!!

Bad Together

Filmmaker Jono Mitchell shares the evolution of a relationship between two seemingly opposite queer friends in Bad Together, his new film releasing to TVOD on December 5 via Dekkoo Films.  Over four years, Robbie (played by Andrés Erickson) and Cameron (played by Queer Niro) learn to accept and love one another and themselves.  “I really wanted to explore the idea that a lot of the expectations we hold for ourselves and others can lead to sadness and conflict,” filmmaker Jono Mitchell explains. “Fundamentally you can connect with a person on the most basic level, but ultimately that connection still needs to be built on mutual expectation.”

The story begins with Robbie, newly dumped, and in such deep need for companionship that he's willing to embrace the company of anyone who extends a hand.  Enter Cameron, the life of the party who appears to revel in the admiration he receives from others. However, behind the happy go lucky exterior is a man who constantly craves validation and is struggling with finding a clear sense of purpose in his life.

Robbie and Cameron are two young men who are desperate to connect with one another but have different ways of achieving the bond.  They each offer their own version of love and affection and as they chase the ideal of what each deems to be true friendship, they create a relationship that may not be healthy for either one of them.

Mitchell explains he was inspired to write the story based on a similar friendship he experienced a few years ago.  “I have an incredible friend who changed my life. He is so special to me, but circumstances within our current stages of life drove us apart,” he recalls. “When everything changed, I had to accept the version of friendship that I idealized didn’t exist anymore. What we became is just as special, but I think I’ll always grieve for what we had.”

Filming for Bad Together took place in Atlanta, Georgia, where Jono Mitchell found the actors who would play Robbie and Cameron. Due to a familiarity with his work, Mitchell didn’t audition Andrés Erickson for the role of Robbie; he offered it to him outright.  For his part, Erickson sees several similarities between himself and the role that he plays in Bad Together.  “Robbie is a caring guy, but like me he has a tendency to overanalyze, and I think we both like to talk things out as opposed to allowing bad feelings to fester.

Where they differ is in their style of communication. “Robbie tends to be petty and more aggressive than I am,” Erickson says.

As for his choice of Queer Niro in the role of Cameron, Mitchell explains, “When you’re casting a character who may behave in unlikable ways, it’s important to find an actor who will naturally highlight some of the character’s more likable attributes. Queer Niro’s charm makes it believable that someone like Robbie would look past Cameron’s mistakes and embrace him as a friend.”

“Cameron is me, just dialed up some notches,” Queer Niro adds, acknowledging that he played the scenes how he would handle the scenarios in real life.  “Cameron is an endearing guy who longs to make something of his life but fears the possible consequences that come from change.”  He hopes viewers will consider Cameron’s conundrum when deciding whether they are Team Robbie or Team Cameron.  “Obviously, Team Cameron is the correct answer,” he laughs.

True to character, Andrés Erickson takes a more neutral stance.  “I hope people are reminded to take care of their friendships. People are complicated and they change and letting go can be necessary. It’s sad, but that doesn't always mean it's a bad thing.”

He also commends Jono Mitchell on writing a script that focuses on queer friendship. “It's not something we see a lot of in queer cinema.  There's often a tendency to focus on the romantic aspects, when in real life things are much more complex and nuanced.”

Filmmaker Jono Mitchell is best known for his work on the Adult Swim digital shows, Dear Jono and Stupid Morning BS.  His most recent works include Courtney Gets Possessed(2023) and Miles from Nowhere (2022).  He hails from Atlanta, Georgia and in 2023, he was named a “2023 Creative to Watch” by the Atlanta Journal Constitution

Bad Together releases December 5 via Dekkoo Films, a subsidiary of the Dekkoo streaming platform. It will be made available for TVOD rental across numerous platforms including Apple, Amazon, Google, and many others before arriving on the Dekkoo streaming platform in 2024.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs like any other town is creepy this time of year and the DTPS famous retro vibe restaurant Lulu is no exception.

I went there like a virgin for the very first time the other day and had pretty standard fare a cheeseburger with fries. I also had a not so standard fare adult beverage a Blood Orange Margarita (blood is the talk of the season) which was delicious!

Of course they had their Halloween finest out. I opted to take the photo op of the entrance to the establishment.

Give a shake rattle and roll for Mr. Skull and his not so Eensy Weensy hairy spider buddy and only 10 more days until Halloween Minions!!!

Jason Vorhees

Welcome to Freaky Friday Halloween style! Who better to represent than the poster boy for Freaky Fridays Jason Vorhees, let's give it up for Jason...Woot!

Jason has decided to take a pre-kill selfie, I'm guessing the post ones would get blood all over the camera lens so they would not take.

Some unlucky camper (most likely a topless female one) is going to get a machete to the face in the near future.

Well Mr. Vorhees never misses and his aim is true, so watch out campers he's coming for you!

Hello and Happy 12 Days until Halloween!!! This year has been a great Spooky Season thus far and I am excited for the High Holy Day to arrive!

No one is going to dampen my anticipation, especially you Satan!!! Moving on...

Binged The Fall Of The House Of Usher on Netflix. Loved it! It was darkly funny, appropriately grotesque, creepy AF and completely off the wall.

A lot of people have the wrong idea about me and honestly I have no desire to clear that sh!t up.

Hush little baby, don't say a word, never mind the noise you heard. It's just the beast under your bed, in your closet, in your head...

I find you repugnant but I must enter into small talk with you due to social conditioning

For Halloween I'm opening the It's Too Late Petting Zoo, think about it, but not too much

Hump Day & Chill

With a scant thirteen days left until Halloween we shall hereby Hump Day & Chill to the this photo above.

"Yes" Minions it's the Spooky Edition of To Catch A Predator!

Looks to me like the Predator is caught, cornered and ready to be delivered to the fate that awaits them.

That's correct I said "them" that is the preferred pronoun of Predators as "they" have no distinguishing features that identify them as male or female.

So there you have it and there it is.

Monday Motivation

With Halloween quickly approaching I thought we should look to The Invisible Man for some Monday Motivation.

"Yes" heed the transparent one's advice start this week's countdown to Halloween with a "reign of terror" Why you might ask, because tis the season and it's fun!

Honestly a "reign of terror" is a cathartic thing and does a psyche good in these trying times. Now I am not suggesting something that will get you arrested or one that involves hurting anyone. More along the lines of some really great scary pranks.

Gotcha pranks in the multiples are a "reign of terror" for those easily scared and it's all in good spooky fun.

Thus have some fun and make it reign Minions!!!

Bitter End Of A Sweet Night

LA’s own Divine Horsemen are confirmed for their record release show at Zebulon on Thursday November 2 at 8pm in support of their new album Bitter End of a Sweet Night (In The Red, October 27). Tickets are available here.

Flood Magazine said of the new record, it has “… the familiarly rollicking and twang-heavy duet “Bitter End,” which parses decades of relationship experience into a single narrative.” While Tinnitist said, “ The L.A. roots-punk legends transfix you with a dark tale of romantic obsession.… of their fierce upcoming album Bitter End Of A Sweet Night.”

The new 16-track collection again features the band’s co-founding members, singers-songwriters Chris Desjardins (better known as Chris D.) and Julie Christensen, and the core members of the ferocious Hot Rise band — guitarist/co-writer Peter Andrus (a member of the group’s late-‘80s lineup), bassist Bobby Permanent and X’s nonpareil drummer DJ Bonebrake (who won’t be doing ‘live’ dates). The sound is filled out by Green On Red and Dream Syndicate keyboardist Chris Cacavas (who appeared on the 1984 Chris D./Divine Horsemen album Time Stands Still) and classically trained violinist Elizabeth Wilson. Desjardins produced the album. Johnny Ray, drummer for The Flesh Eaters in the 1998-2000 era, and featured on that band's 1999 album Ashes of Time, recently joined the Horsemen and will pound skins on the upcoming 'live' dates.

Previously, on March 29, 2022, Divine Horsemen played their first live show since 1987, at Zebulon. There will be more live dates in the late fall/early winter of 2023 following Bitter End of a Sweet Night’s debut.

Only 17 More Days...

Could It Be Satan???

You know the term "The Devil Is A Bottom?" Well if you didn't now you do. He lures people into temptation after all, thus it makes sense.

Here we see Satan working merrily away on his Pride Flag as actual proof! He is clearly a Queer ally of the fun time sort. Satan the Good Time Guy, if you will.

This Devil is also here to remind you that it's scant 17 more days until Halloween...

He's going to tempt you with those apples of his, oh my!!!

Anyway, starting my Friday The 13th off with the gym and a haircut before hand.

So tomorrow is fittingly Friday The 13th, of course one landed in the middle of Spooky Season, as it should. A friend is coming over not to celebrate it per se but we are going to celebrate it since that is the day he can make it.

I hope our luck doesn't run out tomorrow night, if it does...bring it, and another glass of wine.

I noticed everything, I just acted like I didn't, so there!

Crinkle Cut Fries, ribbed for your pleasure, you're welcome...

Stay away from the ferns, they hate humans

Almost finished binging Red Hot Cherry Flavor on Netflix. Two more episodes to go. That show gets weirder as it progresses

I would not be surprised to read a headline that goes like this: Taylor Swift Walks On Water

Finally caught The Strangers there was some really good stuff in it, unfortunately it got bogged down by the really cliche things that were in it. What could have been a great horror movie was rendered merely OK

There was a squirrel staring at my window from the next door neighbors balcony with an evil look in it's eyes...Ugh! I hate squirrels!

Favorite Thing I Saw Online recently - Cardi B makes music for women that shoplift at yard sales LOL!

Woman Crush of the Week - The most underrated Final Girl Amy Steel who was so great in Friday The 13th Part 2

I have no desire to hear one more damned thing about Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and their relationship. I don't know who the people are that actually do

Where can I watch American Psycho? I feel a need to view it again, I love that movie!!!

The Legend Of Ice-T: Crime Stories

MVD Entertainment and Ruffnation Entertainment are proud to announce the November 3rd release of Ice-T's The Legend of Ice-T: Crime Stories, a limited edition 3-LP set on 180 gram audiophile-grade vinyl.

Ice-T announced the release with an unboxing video on his Instagram account to his 1.2M followers, and he posted a video on his X account, which generated almost 190k views.

Chris Schwartz, owner of Ruffnation Entertainment, stated, “When you look at the volume of artists brought to us via hip-hop culture, there have been less than a handful who have true multi-generational appeal. Ice-T is hip-hop's first breakthrough actor, spokesperson, and chronicler.

Ice-T is the original embodiment of LA hip-hop and a cultural icon who helped popularize gangster rap. Ice-T's Crime Stories features some of the most powerful songs from his catalog, as well as some lesser-known and previously unreleased material. Through his music, his books, and his lecture tours of America's prisons, high schools, libraries, and colleges (including Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford), Ice-T has become an influential spokesman for America's youth, regardless of color.

His first break came when the producers of the film Breakin' asked him to rap in the movie. He went on to become rap music's preeminent gangster, writing songs like "Six in the Mornin" and "New Jack Hustler." Ice-T formed Rhyme Syndicate Records in 1989 and released a string of groundbreaking West Coast rap records. His 1991 self-titled debut contained the controversial single "Cop Killer." His group Body Count was the most critically acclaimed act on the highly successful 1991 Lollapalooza tour. Ice-T currently stars in NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Detective Odafin Tutuola.

Hello Monday...

Ghostface

Happy Monday! Ha ha ha ha!!! Since Halloween draws nigh I thought we would start our week with a very important question that's correct Minions "What's your favorite scary movie?"

It also happens to be the signature line of Ghostface straight outta one of the most successful horror franchises ever, the Scream movies.

Today think of me as your own personal Ghostface. If you don't answer correctly you will have a terrible week.

Here are the three questions you must answer or, well your week is going to suck!

1) Name the horror movie that featured the Bauhaus song Bela Lugosi's Dead

2) Whose baby has his "father's eyes"

3) Name the sister Michael Myers kills in the opening of the original 1978 Halloween

Don't take too long to answer, additional penalties may apply....

Halloween Eagle

Halloween Eagle

We all know the US has the Bald Eagle as it's official bird. Well I think that the Crow should have a name change to Halloween Eagle.

Think about it, but not too much. The Crow symbolizes fear and gives one a feeling of unease. Not to mention it's incessant cawing. Thus the perfect official bird for Spooky Season, and deserving of a much loftier name that commands the respect they compel during this most wonderful time of the year and all year round.

So call  them Crows if you must, but I don't have time for that noise.

I hereby moniker them the Halloween Eagle from this day forward. Join me in the revelry won't you?

In 24 More Days...

Channeling Elsa...
Kylie Jenner

What's the fun of Spooky Season if we can't have a Halloween Countdown flown in on a broom occasionally for good measure? I ask you? I'm waiting as usual...

Say what you will, or won't, or better yet say nothing at all about Kylie Jenner seen here as The Bride of Frankenstein.

For those of you not in the know the Bride of Frankenstein is a 1935 film starring Elsa Lanchester as, well, The Bride. I saw it for the first time a few years ago, there is a reason it's considered a classic of cinema, it's terrific! Highly recommended for any lover of horror out there.

Kylie's homage as a sexier version of The Bride to me is dead on (no pun intended, or perhaps it was) - So with only 24 more days left, join Kylie and myself as we get in the spirit of the season.

It's the most wonderful time of the year after all...Boo!

Well now isn't that special? Of course it is, because during this most wonderful time of the year when anything goes you have to ask yourself "Could it be Satan?!" because you know deep in the darkest regions of your soul it could very well be the Prince of Darkness.

It's Scary Season, you know what that means? Time to Hump Day & Chill to one of my favorite vampire movies Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark!

Here's how the story goes:

Cowboy Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar) meets gorgeous Mae (Jenny Wright) at a bar, and the two have an immediate attraction. But when Mae turns out to be a vampire and bites Caleb on the neck, their relationship gets complicated. Wracked with a craving for human blood, Caleb is forced to leave his family and ride with Mae and her gang of vampires, including the evil Severen. Along the way Caleb must decide between his new love of Mae and the love of his family.

"Yes" it's as good as it sounds and then some. I hate to give away any more than this synopsis, but suffice it to say this is a unique one of a kind vampire movie that takes you on a journey that is anything but boring.
