Michael's Musings

Grrrowl!!!
Michael Shinafelt

This past Tuesday we got disoriented in yoga. That was the point and the goal of doing so was to put our collective selves in touch with our souls. We were supposed to experience unique feelings throughout the day, and "Yes" I did.

My personal favorite exercise during the course of the journey was getting on my knees and sitting on the ground a growling. It really got me connected to something primal inside me which inhabited my being the whole rest of the day, the more you know...

FYI When disco ended the tambourine economy never recovered

If I said I spoke to a snake today would you believe me???

Why open your legs when you can open the Bible? I can think of several reasons times infinity actually

Had a good time seeing Poltergeist for the first time since it came out, at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. That's correct Minions I saw a movie about a cemetery in a cemetery!!!

Speaking of Poltergeist while I did have a good time, the movie itself is uneven and more akin to an amusement park ride than an actual film. To me it was like The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland

Finally some representation for Lesbians who were horny losers in High School, discuss

I bet if Taylor Swift farted into a microphone it would become a #1 Billboard Hit

Change the narrative: Go laugh in places you have cried

Women Crush of the Week - That's correct Minions we have two icons in one awesome photo, that I didn't know I needed and now is giving me life! Jamie Lee Curtis of Halloween and Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order SVU! Yes!!!

Notice how Scott Stapp of Creed and the Sleep Paralysis Demon are never in the room at the same time?

Game, set, match...that's all

You are running out of "it is what it is" are you sure you want to continue?

Fog is so underrated, you don't need to see everything

Been re-watching Pretty Little Liars on MAX, it's even better the second go

Hump Day & Chill

Elizabeth Montgomery & Barbara Eden

It's Hump Day & Chill yet again, the last one of August 2023 and today you have to make a choice...Bewitched or I Dream Of Jeannie. If you are unfamiliar you know how to Google. But those who know, well, know.

Bewitched came first here's a summary of the TV classic:  A witch married to an ordinary man cannot resist using her magic powers to solve the problems her family faces.

I Dream Of Jeannie followed trying to cash in on the success of Bewitched here's it's plot: A United States astronaut finds his life vastly complicated when he stumbles on to a bottle containing a female genie.

Bewitched starred the charming and talented Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens. I Dream Of Jeannie starred the equally charming and talented Barbara Eden as Jeannie, naturally.

Now it's time to Hump Day & Chill and choose your fighter!

My personal choice is Bewitched because it's about a witch and Elizabeth Montgomery is bewitching in it. Sorry Jeannie, but the OG is my Hump Day & Chill choice. What's yours???

Cancelled: The Idol

HBO has officially cancelled The Idol. With all the backlash I can't say I am surprised. This being stated I didn't get the backlash. For a show trying so hard to be shocking it lacked substance and, well the power to shock.

I turned it off after two episodes and forgot to un-record the series. Thus I watched the last two episodes out of curiosity. Guess what Minions?!?! The same thing was happening that happened in the first two episodes, it's like shampoo, rinse and repeat.

The series was honestly boring AF to me with a capital "B"

Perhaps I'm simply jaded or I'm more intelligent than the average media consumer. It's like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop: The World May Never Know.

Monday Motivation

Love her or hate her Taylor Swift is a talented young woman. She also gave my favorite Monday Motivation this week.

This is something I learned a long time ago and it is quite a powerful place to be. Once I understood Ms. Swift's comment I found easy to dismiss anything negative stated about me by a casual observer.

Recently I encountered some harassment along these lines of a certain someone who kept telling me a basic bold faced lie about who I was. I finally said to them: "What you say to me doesn't bother me because I know it isn't true. It's the fact that you keep saying it that's annoying me."

Succinct to the point and really what was being said wasn't the problem because I am confident and secure in myself, it was the repetitive factor, I was bored hearing it over and over every chance this individual got.

Thus this Monday and times infinity I be on Team Taylor & Michael - trust me, it's a winning one!

And Just Like That...Kim Cattrall

Samantha Jones I Presume
Kim Cattrall

Well the much hyped return of Samantha Jones on And Just Like That has come and, but not gone you can stream it as many times infinity as you like on MAX.

Kim Cattrall sparkled and really made me (and a legion of others) realize how much the character of Samantha is missed from the ensemble. It also makes one realize how much better the show would be with her back on it.

But alas it is not meant to be, or is it? Time will tell as And Just Like that has been renewed for season three. With the ongoing Writer's Guild and SAG/AFTRA strike who knows when the ladies will return, but And Just Like That they'll be back.

On a final note to those who bought into the the hyperbole that Cattrall got paid a million dollars for her cameo, get real. It's called publicity people.  While I'm not sure what she did get paid, I'm here to tell you if 100% was not a million big ones.

And Just Like That my work is done, Michael has left the building...

Behind The Scenes

Batman
Tim Burton & Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger who portrayed Vicki Vale in one of the original Comic Book based blockbusters Batman posted this image on Instagram of Director Tim Burton, well directing her on the set.  Personally I love seeing what goes on behind the scenes before the cameras start rolling, it fascinates me.

She wrote what it was like working with him on it, oh and it was also to wish him a Happy Birthday! Here in here own word is what Ms. Basinger wrote:

Many know Tim as a creative genius… a master artist… and they are right, of course! But what I always remember are his drawings… how they inspired and amused me…

When I’d find myself sitting next to him on set, I would look over and see him doodling in his script… At that moment, I felt like a small child… walking into an amusement park like none that has ever been created…. Magical… Fantastical… I could feel my eyes growing bigger as I watched him draw these characters in his script…

Being on set with him was a lot like watching one of his own characters... As we exchanged ideas and I got direction from him……. Was like a surrealistic journey in so many ways… Too many to mention here! One of the most meaningful and fun films of my life….. The memories will stay with me forever.

Just another boy from Burbank? I don’t think so! Wishing you the best birthday Tim… wherever you are… whatever you’re doing…. Much love ✨

Happy Saturday!

Tra la la, tra la la, la...

Guess what day it is Minions? It's National Banana Split Day, Yay! While I am sure said day is referring to the ice cream concoction with bananas this is what I think of when I hear it, The Banana Splits!

For those of you who aren't familiar here is the 411:  Each show represented a meeting of the Banana Splits Club, and the wraparounds featured the adventures of the club members, a musical quartet meant to be reminiscent of the Monkees. The Splits' segments, including songs of the week and comedy skits, served as wraparounds for a number of individual segments.

Not to be confused with the 2019 horror movie based on these lovable goofs that made them homicidal. Although that was fun in it's own right, the original show that aired on Saturday mornings will always be the real deal for me.

So imbibe in an actual banana split today or watch The Banana Splits, the choice is yours to make. Choose wisely grasshopper.

Did You Ever Wonder If The Person In The Window Is Real,

Michael Shinafelt

The photo taken above was spontaneous, on my walk home from lunch at one of my local haunts. It has a dream like quality to it, that got curiouser and curiouser as I viewed it and it made me think about perceptions of the world around us and how there is so much more than what meets the eye.

Hump Day & Chill

Having A Kiki
Jason, Ghostface & Freddy

This photo of three icons of horror is awesome, whoever created it deserves a four screams and a machete.

I titled this photo, how could I not? Thus today we are going to Hump Day & Chill to what I call: Scream It's Friday On Elm Street.

Now the beauty of this weeks Hump Day & Chill is I'm sure we can all come up with a clever title for a photo that features Jason, Freddy & Ghostface.

"Yes" it's an interactive HD&C for all you horror fans out there, like myself.

So get to it you ghouls and send me those clever titles that I know you can all think of, right here, right now...

Spotless

I Got No Spots

Behold the rarest of the rare, a Spotless Giraffe born at a Tennessee Zoo. It is believed to currently be the only anywhere on the planet.

The last time one was recorded as being born was in 1972 in Tokyo.

Well Brights Zoo is currently looking to give their new bundle of joy a name. They are holding a contest on their Facebook page. If you would like to "give her a name" I have included the link at the end of this post to do so.

You all might be wondering why I posted about a giraffe. Because it's rare and my Mom who passed away not too long ago loved giraffes and would have enjoyed seeing this photo.

I remember when we went to the Los Angeles Zoo when she visited once and we watched the giraffes for many minutes she was captivated by them.

Monday Motivation

It's the first day of the work week again, time for some Monday Motivation Minions (say that three times fast.)

This particular quote straight outta Blake Lively is something I've been putting into action for a while now. If for some reason my day starts to go off the rails I stop, take a deep breath and say a variation of what she says, but essentially the same thing.

Guess What?!?! It works, you can change your mindset with a simple choice. "Yes" it really is that easy.

Thus the collective mission of all of you is to make Monday August 21, 2023 one of the many best days of your life.

Carlito's Way

Academy Award winner Al Pacino reunites with his Scarface director Brian De Palma for this tough-minded thriller about a gangster looking for salvation down the mean streets of 1970s New York City. Gangster Carlito Brigante (Pacino) gets released early from prison thanks to the work of his lawyer, Kleinfeld (Sean Penn, Milk). Vowing to go straight, Carlito nonetheless finds dangers waiting for him in the outside world. As Carlito works toward redemption, Kleinfeld sinks into cocaine-fueled corruption. When Kleinfeld crosses the mob, Carlito gets caught in the crossfire and has to face a hard choice: remain loyal to the friend who freed him or protect a new life with the woman he loves (Penelope Ann Miller, The Relic). With enemies closing in from all sides, Carlito must find his way before it's too late. Also starring John Leguizamo (Land of the Dead), Luis Guzmán (Magnolia), and Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings), Carlito's Way has come to be regarded as among De Palma's most accomplished films. A hard-hitting gangster noir laced with romance and melancholy, powerful performances and nail-biting suspense.

"Afraid To Love"

David Archuleta
Photo:
Shaun Vadella

David Archuleta continues his recent onslaught of new music with the official release of the brand new music video HERE for his latest single, “Afraid To Love” HERE

“This song is about celebrating and getting people to dance. I wanted something that you could hear at a dance club or to get you jamming late at night in your house.  I’ve been learning to accept myself as I am and to not be afraid anymore of what people think of me. Letting go of any hate and declaring to everyone I’m not going to fear what people think of me for loving whoever I love.”

And, working with director Brad Hammer on the video concept was truly a new experience for me and so fun  incorporating super vibrant colors and dance elements into my video, something that I have shied away from in the past.”   states David.

David recently spoke about what’s on the horizon musically with Entertainment Weekly – “Up” it’s kind of like the prelude. It’s meant to tie where I’m coming from, my past, my history — but it’s also coming from a place where I was at the bottom of that, at the end of that path. I’ve lived out the end of this, and I don’t know where else to go. This is continuing down a very dark place, and I need to get out of it now. So, this is me saying, I’m accepting myself as I am, as a queer person, and letting myself be seen, every aspect of myself. And I’m just letting all of me be seen now. And not being so afraid of hiding myself and being afraid of what people will say if people find out. I’m just like, you know what, now they know! And now it’s just moving up, and I’m gonna have fun. There’s no need to hide anything anymore — just have a good time.  There are some really fun songs that are gonna get people dancing as well, that I’m really excited about. And there are still some classic ballads. I feel like these songs are more about love, something that I always shied away from before because it was something I didn’t relate to. I don’t think I ever really experienced love the way everyone talks about in songs and novels and all that. I’m talking about what it’s like for me to experience it for the first time really and fully. I’m excited to share that, in fun ways, dance ways, and also in ballad-y ways. I’m excited to share this new chapter and these new songs with everyone leading to a full album release later this year.

Hump Day & Chill

Cheers!
Madonna

Well Minions how could we not Hump Day & Chill to the Queen of Pop, Madonna's 65th Birthday today? I ask you, OK fine don't answer.

"Yes" Madonna turns 65 years young today. It seems like just yesterday I saw her on a video screen for the first time (and not like a virgin) at the 18 and older club Skoochies in Seattle, WA.

Madonna has had so much influence in music and pop culture that I don't even know where to begin and end.

Thus let's just give a Hump Day & Chill toast to the best selling female recording artist of all time!

Monday Motivation

Michelle Pfeiffer is here to give you a Monday Motivation reminder: Never put a live bird in your mouth.

Sounds like a common sense sort of thing right? Well I guess when you are playing Catwoman that common sense may fly out the window, or in Michelle's case your mouth.

Anyway as we know Pfeiffer shot the scene and remained disease free post it. She clearly used at least one of her nine lives while filming.

Remember Minions putting things in your mouth that you shouldn't is for the birds, or in this case for the cats.

Shauna Waters, Michael Shinafelt, Lindley Waters & Kelly Waters

Today August 13, 2023 is officially Gay Uncles Day! Since I am a gay uncle, or as we gays refer to it "Guncle" I am celebrating it!

Here a photo of myself and my three nieces. It's an older photo, not recent, why?  Because it's the only one I could find of the four of us together all at once.

It was Christmas, can't recall the year, I'm not good with time frames. But suffice it to say these three give me plenty of reasons to be a proud and happy Guncle.

Their names in no particular order are Lindley, Shauna & Kelly. For those Enquiring minds that want to know.

So to all the Gay Uncles out there wave your Guncle flag high, loud and proud!

Search For Sound

Z2 Comics is proud to announce Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound, an innovative and stunning exploration of the musical pioneer’s winding, exhilarating life and the intoxicating music that followed. The graphic novel will be released by Z2 Comics on November 7th, 2023.

The graphic novel chronicles Davis’ journey from his childhood in Illinois to mastering jazz improvisation throughout the ’40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. These formative experiences led him to redefine the form again and again, culminating into the psychedelic frontiers of afro futurism throughout the ‘70s and beyond. Cartoonist Dave Chisholm, who received his doctorate in Jazz Trumpet from the Eastman School of Music, takes readers on a meticulously researched odyssey charting this dynamic figure’s musical evolution. Throughout, Chisholm centers on the one obsession threaded throughout Davis’ sprawling career: a restless search for the sound. A search that shattered and redefined the limits of what jazz—and music—could be.

Featuring narration adapted from Davis’ own words and a shifting palette of visual styles that mirrors Davis’ famously varied oeuvre, this 150-page graphic novel follows Davis through four decades of musical innovation and ever-escalating obstacles.

Chisholm frames the narrative around Davis’ recovery from a stroke in 1982. With Davis unable to play his trumpet, his medical team urged him to regain coordination by scratching out patterns and scribbles with a pencil on paper. From there, the story hurdles back in time to the icon’s quest to find a mysterious tone he once heard on a moonlit country road in his childhood.

“Davis’ music has truly been a lifelong obsession of mine, inspiring me to pursue jazz trumpet in college and beyond—Sketches of Spain is the first music I ever remember hearing, and I even had the opportunity to perform all of the music he and Gil Evans did together at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy,” Chisholm explains. “Miles continually inspires me to pursue stylistic change as an artist, both visually and musically. This is the book I’ve always dreamt of creating; it’s the biggest honor of my professional life to be given this opportunity by the Davis family.”

“Dave Chisholm has captured the struggle, the genius, and the complexity of Miles Davis in this book. Each page brings the energy of his music to life with the same kinetic fluidity of Miles’ compositions,” Z2 Editor-in-Chief Rantz Hoseley continues. “This is a powerful story that pulls you deep within, whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the lasting influence and innovation of this jazz icon.”

Z2 Comics will release Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound on November 7th in standard hardcover and deluxe hardcover editions. The deluxe hardcover will be packaged with three art prints illustrated by Dave Chisholm and a limited-edition Miles Davis split 7” of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down and Spanish Key, with new art by Dave Chisholm. The Gold editions will be signed and numbered by Dave Chisholm and come with a set of accordion-style postcards with original paintings from Miles Davis and the split 7” of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down and Spanish Key will feature an exclusive colorway. Finally there will be only 10 of 10 Platinum editions of Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound and these will come with a 360° spinning Miles Davis Limited-Edition 3D sculpture, a Miles Davis T-shirt designed by Dave Chisholm and a split 7” of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down and Spanish Key on clear vinyl.

Hump Day & Chill

I know I am late to this particular game, but currently I am binging Gossip Girl on MAX and am almost done with season three. I am hooked! Thus when all is said and done today guess what I will Hump Day & Chill to? Gossip Girl, naturally, gotta finish every delectable season!!!

Why didn't I watch it when it aired initially? The title was a turn off so I didn't bother to find out anything past that about the show. When I found out it was about teenagers behaving badly who can not hide their secrets from a ruthless blogger who publishes them online, well I just had to see it!

There are many things to like about GG my favorite is the well rounded believable characters and the acting. "Yes" sometimes the storylines are somewhat over the top, but if you have well written believable characters with actors who can inhabit them and make even the most outlandish of situations grounded in reality, you can do that sort of thing.

Above is a poster for an ad campaign the clever marketing team behind the show did using quotes from negative reviews for it.

There is one character on the show I do identify with and I'm not telling you who or it is, or what sex they are. Let's put it this way I'm no Dan Humphrey!

Guess away and Hump Day & Chill Minions...

You better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout. I'm telling you why…International starlet of stage and screen Alaska Thunderfuck is coming to town- and she’s not only checked her list twice- she’s checked it thrice.
