Ponyboy Likes "Dick, Dick, Dick"

Lawrence, Kansas based trash rockers & "Entertain Me" favorites Ponyboy are unzipping their latest "Dick, Dick, Dick" a homage about their love of Dick Cheney on April 9th....NOT! April Fools, only the part about Dick Cheney.

Yes, the boys are releasing the abovementioned CD on April the 9th but it's about the fun kind of dick, not the jerk kind...

Here to tell us about it are Ponyboy themselves, Charles McVey and David Zey!

MS: You guys just got done rehearsing are you all hot and sweaty?

DZ: Yes Sir!

MS: This must be David, how are you boy?

DZ: Good Sir!

MS: That's my boy! It's interesting how with this CD you guys are back to where you started with your insightful, satirical social commentary of your first CD "Little Dick Demo" after venturing into really dark territory with your sophomore CD about serial killer Luka Magnotta "Pussy Killer".

CMcV: The songs from "Little Dick Demo" and "Dick, Dick, Dick" were written at the same time, within the first year of us being a band. That's why they have that familiarity to it. This album is a lot more representative of what we sound like live, I think, where "Pussy Killer" had a lot of bells and whistles in it.

This Shit is Bananas: Charles McVey and David Zey
MS: "Pussy Killer" was really brilliant, but very dark, I think you guys music goes above most people's heads.

CMcV: Sometimes we do piss people off, because they are not looking deeper into what our music is saying. That's OK with me, I was always interested in artists who had some sort of depth to them, we usually  have two layers of ideas involved in our songs. Whether it be satirical or with some kind of homo angst all kind of wrapped together, very tongue in cheek.

MS: It was interesting to me that you are back to the basic origin of your musical themes and you took a unexpected detour as soon as you did, with "Pussy Killer" - It still jelled with your identity as a band, but...

CMcV: Well, the "Dick, Dick, Dick" record was already in production when we did "Pussy Killer". "Pussy Killer" really would have been a later release, but we wanted to release it on Luka Magnotta's 30th Birthday. Therefore there was a time factor involved.

MS: You guys are influenced by a lot of classic imagery, it reminds me of classic Madonna when she would take older references and make them her own.

CMcV: Definitely! I like Madonna a lot! I don't really keep up with contemporary pop music but I like her better than Brittney Spears.

MS: You guys really push buttons, like Ms. M, what line wouldn't you cross?

DZ: No shit and no blood!

MS: Rumor has it Grumpy Cat hates Ponyboy.

DZ: Oh yeah, I saw that. Someone made a Grumpy Cat hating us. Was that you?

MS: Uh, no I saw it and laughed. Being hated by Grumpy Cat is very special actually.

CMcV: I think so too.

MS: What do you think of freeballing?

CMcV: I'm a fan!

MS: David?

DZ: I prefer it, generally speaking. I don't like underwear, it's just extra bullshit you have to wear.

MS: Unless I am going out to a function or something, I freeball the other day when I looked in the mirror I noticed I tent out. (laughs)

DZ: No one would see the ridge of my dick if I didn't do it otherwise. (laughs)

MS: Exactly! That's important. (laughs) One last question, how did you guys meet?

DZ: On Craigslist. My Ex-Boyfriend like to hook up with dudes off of Craigslist. I was never really into that it felt really awkward to me. Anyway my X was into that bullshit, and he came across an ad in the men for men section - it was an ad looking for other gay musicians in the area. He hollered to me: "Honey, look at this Craigslist ad that I found". I'm like, Fuck no seriously I'm not into it. He's like: "It's different, this one's different, it's asking for musicians". So, I just responded: "I am gay I like metal, hardcore and rock-n-roll...I play drums, guitar, etc"...We got together jammed a few times and it all worked out.

MS: Very cool. It's a good marriage, don't you think?

Both: Yes!

"Dick, Dick, Dick" releases April 9th.

Have Yourself A "Ponyboy" Christmas

After their last dark foray "Pussy Killer" which  gave us a dialogue about the sensationalism of violence and man's desire for fame at any cost, as seen through the eyes of gay porn star and serial killer Luka Magnotta.

The "Ponys" are back to the levity of their "Little Dick" EP with a Christmas song that the whole family will love! OK, maybe not the whole family "I'm Gonna Kill Myself On Christmas"

Put across with their sly wit and usual commentary "IGKMOC" is the funniest Holiday song since "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" - although not nearly as sophomoric.

So this Christmas when someone says they want a pony, go one better and give them a Ponyboy !

"I'm gonna kill myself on Christmas, just to spite you"....

Ponyboy Releases: "Pussy Killer"

"I know why you did what you did...you wanted to make people think" - "LukaPonyboy

Indie-rockers, Ponyboy. are independently releasing a three-part project inspired by the crimes and ensuing media frenzy of accused killer Luka Rocca Magnotta on his thirtieth birthday. The project consists of a six-track CD titled “Pussy Killer”, an art-house remake of the viral video “1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick”, and a music video for their song, “Luka”.

The self-described “art-fag” band is using the Magnotta case as a platform to address our culture’s fascination with violent crime.  The bulk of the work is in the forty minute album, “Pussy Killer”, the title being a reference to suspicions that Magnotta killed cats in online videos in 2010.  The album’s concluding track, “1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick” was actually scored to the original viral video of the same name with abrasive guitar noise and howls mimicking the action onscreen.

“1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick” is also the soundtrack and title of the Ponyboy. remake of the gruesome shock video available on DVD.  Recently, a one minute trailer for the film was age-restricted by YouTube staff after they received complaints.  The band has also made a music video for their song “Luka”.  The song and video are a tribute to Magnotta from the perspective of a fan and potential future killer.

My Ponyboy's have come a long way from their humble beginnings here on "Entertain Me" (The first PB chat: http://mshinafelt.blogspot.com/2011/09/10-stupid-questions-with-ponyboy.html) - The "Boys" have brought their brand of satire and commentary to a way darker subject matter, hey Charles McVey talk to Daddy....

MS: Why do a record on the Magnotta case?

CMcV: I became interested in the Magnotta case shortly before he was caught, and I assume there are a few specific reasons why I was drawn to it.  First of all the case was so extreme.  Every article I read became more and more horrific as the story unfolded. The fact that the dismemberment video was posted online was just so over the top, and it felt to me like it was almost a new type of crime; a crime for the internet generation. It was the beginning of June and there was already a ton of stuff online about it.  I probably researched it for four hours the first night.  Also, there were tons of posts from Luka and clues online on various social media sites and YouTube.  It really tweaked my sleuthing nerve.  I remember noticing that there were videos posted before the crime was actually committed a couple of days before people really started talking about it.  But even more intriguing to me than the horrible things Magnotta is accused of was the idea that he had done this all for fame and his extreme narcissism, as well as the ensuing frenzy of "Luka Fans" and "Luka Haters" online.

MS: How does it tie in with the rest of Ponyboy's work?

CMcV: From day one, Ponyboy. has written songs about outcasts and dark subjects. I'm sure that the gay side of the story, the idea that he killed "a lover", was something that made it feel like it fit in. And for the last few years my work has had an ongoing relationship of sorts with people in the porn community. But on top of that, Magnotta's back story is rather sad and fucked up.  It seems pretty obvious he was abused in the past, and when you watch video of him being interviewed you can just tell he's full of shit and just saying what he thinks the recipient wants to hear.  There were just so many angles to come at this story from, and the writing came really naturally, now that I think of it.

MS: Isn't releasing a project about Magnotta on his birthday just giving him what he wants by feeding his ego?

CMcV:  He's already famous. This case is pretty well known at this point, and I don't think there's much that an indie rock band from Kansas can do to alter or impact that in either direction.  I don't think the lyrical content of "Pussy Killer" is complementary to Magnotta, and I didn't feel like the fact that it's still a sore spot for people was a reason enough not to do it.  If fact it seems more appropriate to make this kind of gesture while the wound is still fresh in the public's mind.  However, it seems we have already moved on to horror in Colorado.

Thanks My Little Pony -  the video for "Luka" below, this video is not for the squeamish or faint of heart, so watch at  your own risk.
