Delta Rae

Celebrated Americana Ensemble

DELTA RAE "Coming Home To Carolina"
Deluxe Blu-ray + DVD + CD Set
Friday, November 20, 2020

Earthy, familial alt-pop outfit Delta Rae skillfully juggle gospel-tinged country-rock, sensual blue-eyed soul, and harmony-laden Americana, resulting in an infectious, radio-ready sound. Formed in 2009 as a four-piece around the talents of siblings Ian, Eric, and Brittany Hölljes, along with Elizabeth Hopkins, the North Carolina-based band expanded to a sextet the following year with the additions of Mike McKee and Grant Emerson.

In 2011 the group inked a deal with Sire/Warner Bros. after a particularly impressive in-office audition for Seymour Stein, who was blown away by Hopkins and the Hölljes siblings' powerful voices. The resulting Carry the Fire, their major-label debut, arrived in 2012. Carry the Fire reached 11 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart and 13 on the folk chart. Delta Rae released their second album, After It All, in the spring of 2015. Following a relocation to Nashville, the band signed with Big Machine in 2017 and issued a pair of EPs - A Long and Happy Life and The Blackbird Sessions - in quick succession. The front part of 2019 saw a spate of new singles, though in July of that year, Delta Rae announced their departure from Big Machine following a massive company buyout. Choosing to go independent, they quickly launched a massively successful crowd-funding campaign for their next release, a two-part double album called The Light & the Dark. The first volume, The Light, appeared in March 2020.

This electrifying concert film, Coming Home To Carolina was filmed with fourteen 4K Ultra Hi Def Cameras, before hometown fans in Raleigh, North Carolina, during their final shows one week before Christmas, from their highly successful 2019 sold out “Take Me There” Tour, that features some of the band's biggest hits including “Take Me There”, “Down By The River”, “Dance In The Graveyard” interspersed with scenic performances scenes at Raleigh River. Interview segments at the band's home where they recorded most of their first album of songs, ending in a bonfire jam at the Local Watering Hole.

Film Buff Friday: America As Seen By A Frenchman

At the end of the 1950s, celebrated French documentarian François Reichenbach (F for Fake, Portrait: Orson Welles), whose lens captured the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Johnny Hallyday, spent eighteen months traveling the United States, documenting its diverse regions, their inhabitants and their pastimes. The result, America is Seen by a Frenchman, is a wide-eyed - perhaps even naïve - journey through a multitude of different Americas, filtered through a French sensibility and serving as a fascinating exploration of a culture that is both immediately familiar and thoroughly alien. Prison rodeos; Miss America pageants; visits to Disneyland and a school for striptease; a town inhabited solely by twins; rows of newborns in incubators, like products on an assembly line - all these weird and wondrous sights, and more, are captured, sans jugement, by Reichenbach's camera, aided by whimsical narration (provided by, among others, Jean Cocteau) and a jaunty musical score by the late, great Michel Legrand (Une femme est une femme). Titled L'Amérique insolite - literally "unusual America" - in its native tongue, America as Seen by a Frenchman lovingly renders the various eccentricities of Americana circa the mid-twentieth century, and proves the old adage that reality really is stranger than fiction.

An Ode To Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter
For those of you who think Ms. Helena Bonham Carter only has a career because of her partner Tim Burton, that just proves how Mother F#cking young you are!

She has been around for a while and has had a quite successful acting career long before that.

I first remember seeing the amazingly talented Helena in the great film "A Room With A View" if you don't know it, check it, with my friend Jennifer DiMartino of the "Americana With Twisted Roots" band, The Drews, she is a fellow Helena fan, FYI.

Not to mention the lovely film "Howard's End" and one of my all time favorites "Fight
Club."

Helena's career has been a unique one, she has always marched to the beat of her own drummer and ALWAYS let her freak flag fly!

Here is what she has to say about why she does not have a stylist:
"I've had a stylist once or twice, but it doesn't really work out because basically, I don't like being told what to wear. I don't like being told what to do, so there's no point. A lot of people suggest that I should."
Keep on bucking the trends and keep being you Helena, we will always love ya!

XOXO

The Horror: Sing-A-Long With The Drews

Described as "Americana singer/songwriters with twisted roots", The Drews are the lean and mean husband and wife music machine Jennifer and Andrew DiMartino  and were once voted Seattle's number one band...Boo!

As it happens this duo has managed to put one great macabre song on each of their CD's that I recommend to others, listen to and use for my Halloween fun!

Their first CD "Strategically Interrupted Silence" features "Lloyd's Eyes" which chronicles the demented activity of an optometrist who steals his patients eyes and collects them as trophies. Rumor has it he and Buffalo Bill from "Silence of the Lambs" do lunch once month and talk shop.

"Lloyd's Eyes" is musically insane and perfect fun for Halloween or anytime, you want to get all "eye for an eye" on someone's butt!

Next up "Necroditty" from their great CD "Sins of Others" produced by Conrad Uno.

Time to break the title down, Yo! Necro=Dead and if you substitute the word "diddle" for "ditty" the song title would basically translate into "Diddle The Dead".

If you need more of a song explanation than this consult a mortician, because I'm not getting into it any further with you guys, so there!
