"That's A Human Ear"

Kyle MacLachlan
Blue Velvet

I recently rewatched Blue Velvet for the first time since it came out when I was in college. As a person in his 50's I now realize how darkly funny the film is here is an example of this...

"Did You Hear Anything?" "Bits And Pieces"

Jeffrey is seeing Sandy for the first time since what seems like high school. Jeffrey is eager to learn more about the ear he found in the field, and Sandy reveals that her bedroom is right above the office of her detective father. Their banter over this results in some subtle puns which aren't acknowledged in the film may merit a chuckle from the audience.

I know I laughed a lot revisiting this classic!

Life Is A Mystery

David Lynch & Laura Dern

"In a darkness, And the mysteries, Of love, Come clear" - Mysteries Of Love, Julee Cruise

Laura Dern dropped out of college because UCLA would not allow her to take a leave of absence to film "Blue Velvet." She gave David Lynch's script to the head of the film department in order to convince him, but he fired back at her: “First of all, if you make this choice, you are no longer welcome at UCLA. You’ll be out. But secondly, having read this script, that you would give up your college education for this is insane.” Dern says that "today, if you want to get a masters in film at that school, when you write a thesis there are three movies you are required to study. And you know what one of them is? Pisses me off."

Hump Day & Chill

Pretty In Blue
Isabella Rossellini

"She wore blue velvet, Bluer than velvet was the night" - Blue Velvet

I'm not sure how chill this really is, but it's occupying the corners of my mind. "Yes" it's Isabella Rossellini straight outta Blue Velvet.

Thus let us Hump Day & Chill to her magnificence in it! Isabella portrayed nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens whose son and husband have been kidnapped by first class psycho Frank Booth.

I saw Blue Velvet when it first came out, there had never been anything like it prior. Was it shocking? For it's time it was, I personally wasn't shocked by any of it. That being said one of my friends who was with me was incensed when it was over and said how she almost walked out and now needed to go home and take a shower.

Yeah, there's that. Whatever your take on the actual film no one can deny the glory of Isabella Rossellini in it.

So a Hump Day & Chill toast to the goddess that is Isabella...

Cheers!

Hump Day & Chill

Frank Booth
aka
Dennis Hopper

"She wore blue velvet, Bluer than velvet was the night, Softer than satin was the light

From the stars"  - Blue Velvet, Bobby Vinton

"Let's F#ck! I'll f#ck anything that moves!" - Frank Booth, Blue Velvet

Spotted this intense image of Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth straight outta the David Lynch classic Blue Velvet the other day and it brought back some, shall we say, interesting memories of seeing it when it first came out. I was in college in the Seattle area in case you were wondering.

I will tell you there had never been anything like it before, it caused a sensation in 1986. It seemed it was a love it/hate sort of proposition in terms of audience reaction. Critics on the other hand overall loved it.

One thing is also certain, you'd never seen anything like Dennis Hoper's portrayal of evil incarnate Frank Booth. He was one of the most disturbing and scary one man freak shows to ever grace the big screen.

Thus today we are going to have a Hump Day & Chill celebration of the late Dennis Hopper and the role he played that was a revelation of modern cinema, I'm going to find out where I can see Blue Velvet online TTFN and Hump Day & Chill Minions!!!

"Beautifully Squeezed Tube Of Toothpaste" Rihanna

Your Hand Is Like Blue Velevt
Rihanna & Chris Martin
Coldplay's consciously un-coupled frontman Chris Martin recently gave an in depth interview to The Guardian where he spoke quite highly of  Rihanna.

You know Rihanna, the music superstar who was featured on Colplay's Princess Of China? You know, her.

Well Martin came up with a strange/beautiful/WTF? analogy to describe Rihanna's voice.

It's like a "Beautifully squeezed tube of toothpaste" he said.

This is a huge compliment when you think about it. How many times has anyone ever used a tube of toothpaste squeezed in a way that would make you feel you did it "beautifully" and utilized the whole freakin' thing? Yeah, I thought not.

Wow! Wished Chris would have dispensed some of these gems about ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, but perhaps those analogies were not nearly as endearing.

OUT NOVEMBER 13TH ON VANGUARD RECORDS

ISAAK TO PERFORM AT 9TH  ANNUAL ACM HONORS LIVE IN NASHVILLE ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST

"Wicked!" Chris Isaak is performing in Nashville on September 1st! I have seen Mr. Isaak live and he's da bomb! He also has an album of new music coming in November - 'tis the season of Chris Isaak...!

Chris Isaak’s  new album  FIRST COMES THE NIGHT  produced by Paul  Worley (Dixie Chicks, Lady Antebellum), Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell) and longtime Isaak collaborator Mark Needham will be released on Vanguard Records on November 13th. Recorded primarily in Nashville and Los Angeles, FIRST COMES THE NIGHT is Isaak’s 13th studio album consisting of 12 new songs.  A second configuration - a deluxe version with five additional cuts - will be released simultaneously.  It is Isaak’s first recording of all original songs in over six years. FIRST COMES THE NIGHT is the follow up release to Isaak’s critically acclaimed 2011 BEYOND THE SUN, his breathtaking tribute album to Sun Records, Sam Phillips and the visionary artists who helped shape the early sounds of rock n’ roll.

Commented Isaak on his upcoming album: “I totally enjoyed recording in Nashville – a city filled with terrific musicians and what an honor to work with such great producers.  As for the new songs, I like to mix it up so there’s some dark ones, funny ones and romantic ones. You have to absolutely play these songs after the break up while you’re cleaning the house.”

With a stellar reputation as one of the best and funniest live performers out there, Isaak, a non-stop touring, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, actor and talk show host is heading to Australia momentarily to take on the role as one of the panel judges on the new season of X Factor Australia.

Isaak’s vocal style has garnered enormous acclaim and his songs have been featured in numerous films including “Blue Velvet,” “Married to the Mob” and “Wild at Heart.”  His vast repertoire of long-running hits include “Wicked Game,” “Forever Blue,” “Baby did a Bad Bad Thing” and “Somebody’s Crying.” He has appeared on many TV shows – most recently “Hot in Cleveland”, has acted in several films and starred in Showtime’s The Chris Isaak Show and the Chris Isaak Hour on the Biography Channel.

This Tuesday, September 1st, Isaak is scheduled to perform on the 9th Annual ACM Honors taking place at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
