Film Buff Friday: The Hills Have Eyes

"One of the prime examples of what was so fascinating about American horror films in the 1970s".

     —TV Guide

Horror master Wes Craven achieved critical and commercial success with the likes of Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street - but for many genre fans, the director's seminal 1977 effort The Hills Have Eyes remains his masterpiece. Taking an ill-advised detour en route to California, the Carter family soon run into trouble when their campervan breaks down in the middle of the desert. Stranded, the family find themselves at the mercy of a group of monstrous cannibals lurking in the surrounding hills. With their lives under threat, the Carters have no choice but to fight back by any means necessary. Following on from his notorious 1972 directorial debut The Last House on the Left, Craven's The Hills Have Eyes stands alongside the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead as one of the defining classics of American horror.

Film Buff Friday: I Spit On Your Grave

"A vile bag of garbage without a shred of artistic distinction. Attending it was one of the most depressing experiences of my life."

     —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

Camille Keaton (What Have You Done to Solange?, Tragic Ceremony) stars as Jennifer Hills, a young and beautiful career woman who rents a backwoods cabin to write her first novel. Attacked by a group of local lowlifes and left for dead, she devises a horrific plan to inflict revenge in some of the most unforgettable scenes ever shot on film.

In 1978, one film changed the face of cinema forever. Now, four decades later, the original and notorious I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (aka 'Day of the Woman') is back and still refusing to be buried! In this new special edition Blu-ray, you can re-experience the phenomenon that shocked and divided the world - and influenced an entire genre and generation of filmmakers - with a new 4K HD scan and restoration of director Meir Zarchi's 35mm original camera negative and a newly restored original mono soundtrack. Film Buff Friday: The Birds

Since "tis the season" this week we are going to take a gander at Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. I have seen The Birds a handful of times. The last being on the roof of the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood for their, what else, rooftop screening series.

It was great seeing it outdoors on a big screen in the heart of Hollywood. I had merely seen it on TV the other times. It was an experience I will never forget!

What's that you say? You've never seen the birds, well that's ca ca. What now? You want to know more about this horror classic?

Great, then I suggest you head over to my buddy Jay Jacobson's Classic Movie Blog for the 411. Jay gives great insights, not to mention behind the scenes gossip and truly wonderful bios of the actors and filmmakers involved in the making of the magic.

Film Buff Friday: Legend

"Legend is an impressive technical achievement. Scott is a perfectionist who takes infinite pains to make things look right."

     —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

After changing the face of science fiction cinema forever with Alien and Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott turned his visionary eye to the fantasy genre, teaming with writer William Hjortsberg (Angel Heart) to create a breathtaking cinematic fairytale with one of the screen's most astonishingly rendered depictions of Evil. In an idyllic, sun-dappled forest, the pure-hearted Jack (Tom Cruise) takes his true love Princess Lili (Mia Sara) to see a pair of unicorns frolicking at the forest's edge. Little do they know, however, that the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry, in a remarkable make-up designed by The Thing's Rob Bottin) has dispatched his minions to capture the unicorns and sever their horns so that he may plunge the world into everlasting night. After Lili and the unicorns are taken prisoner, Jack must team with a group of forest creatures and descend into Darkness' subterranean lair to face off against the devilish creature before it is too late. Despite a troubled production in which the elaborate full-size forest set was accidentally incinerated and a lengthy post-production that resulted in multiple versions of the film (with competing music scores by Jerry Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream), Legend has since been restored to Scott's original cut and embraced by generations of film fans eager to see a master director's unique vision of a world beyond our imagination.

Film Buff Friday: Cabaret

Ask anyone who knows me, musicals are not my thing overall. "Yes" of course there are some I like here and there, but I do not have a blind love of them.

File Cabaret under one that I L-O-V-E! Oh, and I know why too. This groundbreaking musical doesn't have the usual sugar coated narrative of the genre. It's quite adult in subject matter and style.

What's that you say? I have whetted your curiosity and you want more?

Then more you shall have by clicking on the link below and reading my buddy Jay's expert piece about the film on his classic movie blog.

If that doesn't compel you to see Cabaret I don't know what will.

T.G.I.F! Life is a cabaret, old chum, come to the cabaret...

Film Buff Friday: The Misfits

With the recent anniversary of the passing of Marilyn Monroe I thought we should take a look back at my favorite film she was in The Misfits courtesy of my buddy Jay Jacobson and his classic movie blog.

The Misfits is a truly haunting classic that boasts mesmerizing performances from Monroe, Montgomery Clift & Clark Gable. Not to mention great direction from John Huston and a screenplay by Arthur Miller.

One of my all time favorite movie scenes ever is in The Misfits. It's the scene where Monroe as Roslyn dances silently amongst the trees. Trust me the scene packs an intense emotional punch.

As per usual while reading Jay's coverage I learned some new behind the scenes facts about the history of this masterpiece.

What's that you ask? What new things did I learn? Hit the link below and find out! It's one of the best write-ups of a classic Hollywood film I have ever read! T.G.I.F!

Film Buff Friday: The Night Of The Hunter

Here's a classic movie that I have yet, but want to see The Night of the Hunter. Described as "A spellbinding, nightmarish, fairytale film like no other" the plot goes something like this:

"A religious fanatic marries a gullible widow whose young children are reluctant to tell him where their real daddy hid the $10,000 he'd stolen in a robbery"

From what this writer hears there's way more to it than that, and it's quite the ride! After reading my buddy Jay Jacobson's write-up on his classic movie blog I must say I'm now all in and am actively seeking out how I can watch this gem.

What's that you say? Oh, of course you get to read what I read that made me so interested in viewing it. All you have to d is click on the link below and enjoy your weekend Minions!

Film Buff Friday: Major Dundee

"No true Peckinpah-lover should pass it by" —

Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

After making his first bonafide classic in Ride the High Country, director Sam Peckinpah took a step towards the epic with Major Dundee. The film would, in many ways, define the rest of his career both on screen and off, as the drama behind the camera matched the action in front of it.

Charlton Heston stars as Major Amos Dundee, a vainglorious Union Cavalry officer, who mounts an expedition to hunt down Apache war chief Sierra Charriba. Building his own army of criminals, ex-slaves and Confederate POWs - among them one Captain Ben Tyreen (Richard Harris), whose intense former friendship with Dundee is tainted with a sense of betrayal on both sides - Dundee heads into Mexico, his eye fixed firmly on a last shot at greatness.

Legendarily acerbic, Major Dundee would be the first time that Peckinpah had a movie taken away from him. While a director's cut may be lost to us, this Limited Edition shows us the thrilling, morally complex epic that Peckinpah was aiming for. Beautifully shot and with a stellar supporting cast including James Coburn, Warren Oates, and L.Q. Jones, it remains a stunning achievement and an essential experience for anyone interested in the life and cinema of "Bloody Sam."
