Pills & Kills "The Theta Girl"

Once upon a time...

The Theta Girl, a feature film produced by first-time filmmakers David Axe and Christopher Bickel, is coming to film circuits this Winter.

The film had its world-premiere in Atlanta on Friday the 13th of October at midnight -- a fitting time slot for opening what director Christopher Bickel calls "a brutally violent existential horror film." At the Atlanta screening, several audience members walked out of the film following one shocking scene depicting a violent home invasion. The audience members who remained were very vocal and enthusiastic about their enjoyment and appreciation of the film, one audience member writing in a comment online: "Holy sh*t! Talk about a low-budget MASTERPIECE. A gory drug-induced mystery! A psychedelic B Movie thriller! Roger Corman-esque Punk cinema that's WAY better and smarter than it should be! A++++++"

The Theta Girl was produced on a shoestring budget of $14,000. To put that budget into perspective, the film could have been made 3,571 times over for what it cost Hollywood to make one Emoji Movie. It is the first film for Axe and Bickel, and indeed it was the first film for the majority of cast and crew. Though the film exhibits some rough edges as a result of its extremely low budget and the experience level of the creators, it has been enthusiastically praised for its high entertainment value, thoughtful existential themes, and shocking content.

The film has already received accolades from critics. One critic gushing "not only is it possibly the best independent film of 2017 but possibly one of the best examples of low budget filmmaking EVER!" (full review HERE)

Venerated Indie Film magazine Film Threat gave The Theta Girl high marks calling it "edgy, thoughtful, quality entertainment." (full review HERE)

Billed as an "existenploitation film," The Theta Girl follows the trials and tribulations of young drug-dealer, Gayce Delko, and the hallucinogen she peddles. "Theta" was a "fun drug" -- a drug that blew people's minds. Theta was supposed to be a door to Heaven, but when her best friends get methodically and brutally murdered, Gayce realizes theta might also be a door to Hell -- and it's up to her to shut it. The film's tagline is "She brought the pills. He brought the kills."

Bickel describes The Theta Girl as "an exercise in sex, drugs, punk rock, brutality, gore, revenge, and self-actualization... but really it's an art film."

The Theta Girl was written by David Axe and directed by Christopher Bickel, who also shot, edited, and provided sound-design for the film. Axe and Bickel also served as the film's producers under the "Barron Perter Productions" moniker. The film stars Victoria Elizabeth as "Gayce," Shane Silman as "Brother Marcus," and Darrelle D. Dove as "Derek."

The film has not been rated by the MPAA, but it contains nudity, drug use, adult themes, and extremely graphic violence.

Miley Cyrus Frees The Nipple

Miley Cyrus: Free the Nipple
She prances around in her undies, sticks out her tongue and does one mean ass, with emphasis on the ass part, twerk!
Now fans of the mighty Miley Cyrus can now get up close and personal with her boobs.
The "Wrecking Ball" singer posted a topless photo on Instagram in support of the Free the Nipple Campaign.
"Some lame ass deff gonna [flag] that but f--kkkkkkk it," stated the caption on the photo taken of her with her left arm across her chest.
MIley has been supportive of the movement that aims to end the media's "glorification of violence and repression of nudity."
This is a movement I personally support and think is terrific!
Lena Dunham, Liv Tyler, Scout Willis and Rumer Willis have also freed their nipples in support of the equality movement that "stands against female oppression and censorship" while helping to "empower women across the world."
Ms. Cyrus recently expressed herself to BBC's Newsbeat
"Guys get to show their titties on the beach, why can't we?" she asked. "I don't understand the double standard of life."
She also stated "I feel like I'm one of the biggest feminists in the world, because I tell women to not be scared of anything."
And they shouldn't be, go Miley!

Election Day: Embrace Your Power

Art By: Patrick Martinez
Los Angeles Artists & Creative Organizers Launch
Embrace Your Power, Embrace Our Communities
Neon Sign & Photo Essay
Call to Action Initiative
To Encourage Voting In Los Angeles
In the November 4, 2014 General Election

Hey people it's November 4th, you know, Election Day, embrace your power, do it and do it now...!

Creative Organizer, Visual Street Artist & Fashion Photographer
Join Forces to Bring Attention to Importance of Voting

Local creative organizer Wyatt Closs, visual street artist Patrick Martinez, and fashion photographer Colin Young-Wolff have joined forces in an artful call to action, Embrace Your Power, Embrace Our Communities, to promote voting in Los Angeles.  Particularly aimed at young people and disaffected communities who are apathetic about voting, the campaign centers on a neon artwork with text that urges passersby to “Embrace Your Power” (see image above). The sign, a whimsical play on neon palm reader signage, was positioned and documented in diverse communities around Los Angeles; the resulting images and videos are being distributed online through a variety of social media platforms to serve as a catalyst for political action. For additional information, please see http://bigbowlofideas.com/embrace.

“The goal of the Embrace Your Power, Embrace Our Communities sign project is to encourage community members to register and vote,” says Wyatt Closs, producer of the photo project, “Our strategy is to catch attention through dynamic visuals, something that is not traditionally seen in political communications. There’s no preaching at you or red, white, and blue.”

Embrace Your Power Student Action –
Closs, Martinez, and Young-Wolff are collaborating on behalf of a cluster of non-profit and community-based organizations as part of a larger Embrace Your Power campaign, spearheaded by youth activists in the Los Angeles area who are frustrated by immigration reform and hoping to effect change. Participants, some of whom have fasted for as long as a week, are calling attention to the humanitarian crisis on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Alarmed by reactions they saw to the Central American ‘border children’ fleeing violence, a group of students in Los Angeles took matters into their own hands. They decided to do a very public fasting to bring attention to the plight of the border children and to get the message out that children should be valued over politics. In addition to the fast, their actions also included a canned food and clothing drive for goods to be delivered to shelters and centers currently housing border children.

Many of the student activists are affiliated with the “Children Over Politics” video project, which encourages individuals to create videos in support of the cause, organized by the Service Employees International Union. Additional Embrace Your Power collaborators include United Long Term Care WorkersUnited Service Workers WestCoalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los AngelesCarwash Workers Organizing CampaignCouncilman Gilbert CedilloCLUE LAHeadcount.org, and #GoVote

Embrace Your Power, Embrace Our Communities Neon Sign & Photo Essay –
The neon sign and corresponding photo essay are designed to support the ongoing Embrace Your Powerstudent-led effort to get more young people to affect social change through political engagement. The art breaks with traditional forms of appeal used in politics to get people to vote while showing the beauty of Los Angeles’ ‘sleeping giant’ communities. In the photo essay images, the sign is juxtaposed against locations that represent the diverse communities of Los Angeles as well as the issues impacting those communities, such as clinics, schools and libraries, which require political engagement in order to thrive. The photo essay image and video assets are being shared online through a variety of social media platforms, in collaboration with participating non-profit and community-based organizations, through Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and Instagram. The project’s hope is that the campaign imagery will go viral in order to serve as a catalyst for political action.

“In a subtle, streetwise form, the message behind the entire Embrace Your Power campaign is: Make your own future by voting,” says Closs.

Adam Levine Is A Stalker

Adam Levine & His Wife, Model Behati Prinsloo
Give Us A Halloween Treat
"Baby I'm preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
Just like animals" - "Animals" Maroon 5

That's right, Adam Levine is going as a stalker for Halloween in the video for the latest Maroon 5 single: Animals.

His costume of choice is quite controversial apparently among organizations that are advocates for stopping violence against women.

Everyone has the right to their opinion, and here's mine. Having seen the video and being a fan of horror, to me this is pretty standard fare and no big deal.

Personally I find Anaconda by Nicki Minaj or Robin Thicke's date rape song Blurred Lines way more offensive and degrading to women than Animals.

Animals is essentially a short slasher film about a stalker that has premiered during the perfect time of the year, Halloween. Translation, it's a great video and brilliant marketing, nothing more.

Sorry if I do not share in the outrage over something that is seen in TV shows and movies all the time.

I love the video, it's creepy, sexy and has great imagery, everything a gritty horror movie should be! Check it out below!

Keira Knightley Hits Back At Domestic Violence

Keira Knightley

I know this PSA by the lovely and talented Ms. Keira Knightley is not new, it was done around the time Chris Brown beat up Rhianna, but it is powerful and the subject matter bears to be kept in our consciousness.

Ms Knightley had this to say about the PSA against domestic violence when she did it:

"I wanted to take place in this advert for Women's Aid because while domestic violence exists in every section of society, we rarely hear about it," Knightley said. "We may not think we know someone who has experienced domestic violence, but this does not mean that it is not happening."

Here are the facts:

  • 1 in 4 women has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime
  • Nearly 3 out of 4 Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence.
  • On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in this country every day.
Here is the PSA. Heads Up, very strong violent content, but very effective.

Reel Life: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Rooney Mara, Rooney Mara, Rooney Mara….

Where do I start? Having not seen the Swedish version of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and not having read the book, I went into David Fincher’s version with no real expectations whatsoever….Rooney Mara.

This is what I came away from it with, TGWTDT is and adult movie with a capital “A” … and I do not mean for it’s violent & sexual content (we will get to that later).

It is a film for grown ups who like character exposition and plots you have to pay attention to. The first half of the film is dedicated to establishing who Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) & Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) are as people before their two paths cross. At first I thought this part of the movie to be a tad long, but the more it sat with me, the more I loved it!

When I see a movie and I think about it after the fact, well that is a good sign to me, it is better than it being disposable.

Thus TGWTDT is a fascinating character study. My only quibble is, I wished Mikael Blomkvist was as interesting as Lisbeth Salander. Rooney Mara, OK, time to move past it, David Fincher has directed some of my most favorite in your face movies “Se7en” “Fight Club” & “The Social Network” …which, is one of the things I find quite interesting about TGWTDT -

The sex and violence are quite subdued…. Seriously lets site a couple of Jodie Foster films that illustrate intense quite well, Oscar winner “Silence of the Lambs” way more freaky violence wise, and “The Accused” a rape scene that had me so upset I wanted to lay it down on the next guy I saw on Hollywood Blvd. who even gave a woman that look.

Yeah, TGWTDT is quite tame by the abovementioned standards. So one of my fave directors, Fincher, has remained true to himself, yet oddly grown up. Did I like TGWTDT? Heck yeah! It was a really great film for adults…and in case I did not mention it Rooney Mara is amazing!

Note: Hey Mr. Fincher - you never disappoint, however, next time you want to be a big boy, a little up in people’s grill would be a nice addition.
