Apprentice To Murder

Not to be confused with "Redrum"

WAS IT MAGIC, MURDER, OR MADNESS? In early twentieth-century Pennsylvania Dutch Country, young Billy Kelly (Chad Lowe, Highway to Hell) falls in with a charismatic "powwower" or folk magic healer, Dr. John Reese (Donald Sutherland, Don't Look Now), shunned by the rest of the community for his non-conformist beliefs. Together, they investigate the mysterious sickness that is blighting the area, which Reese believes to be the work of a sinister local hermit. But as the plague spreads and the wide-eyed Billy falls ever deeper under Reese's spell, are they doing God's work or the Devil's bidding? Also starring Mia Sara (Legend) and featuring a powerhouse performance by Donald Sutherland - reunited here with Don't Look Now screenwriter Allan Scott - Apprentice to Murder is a chilling and unforgettable tale of the macabre that blurs the lines between conventional notions of "good" and "evil".

Film Buff Friday: Killer Nun

Never trust a Nun, unless she's flying...

FROM THE SECRET FILES OF THE VATICAN! Aging blonde-bombshell Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita, Pick-up Alley) gives a full-bodied performance as a sex-crazed sister with some seriously bad habits in the lurid cult classic Killer Nun. One of the most notorious 'nunsploitation' films, Killer Nun tells the sordid story of Sister Gertrude, a disturbed woman of the cloth who degenerates into a perverse mire of drug taking, sexual perversion, sadistic torture and murder. Joe Dallesandro (The Climber, Flesh for Frankenstein), Alida Valli (The Possessed, Suspiria) and the ample Paola Morra (Behind Convent Walls) offer spirited performances and able support to Ekberg, in this shocking tale based on real events. Boasting an incongruously classy score by legendary composer Alessandro Alessandroni (Women's Camp 119) and stylishly rendered scenes of sex and murder, Killer Nun takes the viewer on hair-raising journey from the heights of religious ecstasy to the depths of devilish degeneracy. Now Giulio Berruti's sleazy classic is presented in a stunning new 2K restoration, with a liturgy of new extras, ready to be preyed upon.

Sandy Zacky On Orlando #WeAreOrlando

With the tragedy in Orlando still lingering. I held off on addressing it initially because I wanted to process my own thoughts and feelings. Everyone is still reacting as well they should, it was the biggest mass shooting in the United States ever.

People should be concerned, not just gay people. This is something we must pay attention and attend to. It can and most likely will happen again at a place and time you would least expect.

As a gay man of course I am upset. However it hit me in a more general way, I think about the potential of such an incident in the many familiar places I travel throughout my day. Let's face it no where and no one is safe.

What I wanted to do was give a different point of view on this, perhaps not even mine but something that could add to the dialogue. Here is a fresh prospective. This is from a grandmother who worries about the country and what the future of it holds for her grandchildren. Her name is Sandy Zacky, you may remember her as Entertain Me's resident chanteuse. She wrote this powerful statement the morning of the shooting on her Facebook page:

"I am sure what is on my mind is what is on most people's mind.
I feel sick, angry, helpless and more.

What now? It is my grandchildren and their generation that I fear for the most.

What are we we leaving them? A sick world of people whose only quest is to kill those who don't believe as they do. They think we are immoral but who is more immoral than those who MURDER innocents who just want to live
their lives the way they choose?

Those of you who are that sick may murder but you will not take the US down. You are the cowards we will be the survivors!"

Perfectly stated Sandy. Here is a song she performed with her singing partner Mike Clifford dedicated to the victims and survivors of the tragedy, Love Is Everything -

With congress recently turning a blind eye to the problem at hand, something needs to be done...now, before a tragedy like this can happen again.

He's Just An Edgar Allan Poe Boy

What do Edgar Allan Poe & Black Cats have in common?

Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cats: Two Adaptations by Sergio Martino & Lucio Fulci

Edgar Allan Poe's celebrated story The Black Cat has provided the inspiration for numerous films over the years. But few adaptations are as stylish as those offered up by the twin Italian titans of terror, Sergio Martino and Lucio Fulci.

In Martino's classic giallo Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, teacher Oliviero (Luigi Pistilli, A Bay of Blood) finds himself under suspicion for murder when one of his students - and mistress - is found brutally murdered. As more bodies start to pile up, the arrival of Oliviero's attractive niece (Edwige Fenech, Five Dolls for an August Moon, All the Colours of the Dark) brings with it complications of its own.

In The Black Cat, from that "other" Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci (Zombie), Scotland Yard Inspector Gorley (David Warbeck, The Beyond) find himself summoned to a sleepy English village to investigate the recent murder of a young couple. With no obvious signs of entry at the murder scene, Gorley is forced to start considering the possibility that his suspect may not be human...

Finally together on Blu-ray and in stunning new 2K restorations from the original camera negatives, fans can enjoy the double-dose of terror that is Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cats - Italian-style!

It's Murder Ballad Time With Dudley Saunders

Check out Dudley Saunders exploring his inner Nick Cave, here is a message from the artist:

Here's the third lyric video from IN THESE BOXES.  ROSEWOOD CASKET is a murder ballad, and so much more of a full narrative than the other songs.

"People disappear because their lives can't become stories. We tell the stories of heroes, but most people aren’t heroes. Their stories get stopped before they can happen. And that means only the unfinished stories tell us who we really are.

My father’s people are from Flemingsburg, farm country just outside of Appalachia. Appalachia was mostly settled by people from the border country between Scotland and England. When England and Scotland warred, they mostly just attacked the Border people. And this turned them strange – distrustful, paranoid, angry. And they took that anger with them when they settled Appalachia.

But on the other side of anger is guilt. You must have done something to make God hate you so much.

In 1888 – the year my grandmother was born – Johnny meant to leave Appalachia, to start his life, and then didn’t. The reason was in this hunting knife."

Have Yourself A "Pretty Little Liars" Christmas

Thought We Were Doing Our Usual Halloween Special In 2014? We Lied, Merry Christmas!
Leaving Halloween specials behind, Pretty Little Liars producers decided to gift us with a Christmas episode instead. That airs, well, tonight!

But if you are expecting visions of sugar plums dancing in your head, you thought wrong.

The mystery surrounding the shocking death of Mona, played by the awesome Janel Parrish will be the center of the, Christmas celebration on the episode? So to speak.

"It's a dream sequence episode, but there's also a lot of really important things that happen in the episode," Says Janel. "Mona, actually before she died, leaves clues for Hanna to follow to find out who murdered her. The girls will be trying to figure out what exactly happened to Mona all the while having an amazingly creepy and fun holiday special."

We will also get the gift of whether Spencer might actually be cleared for the murder of Bethany Young.

Suspense and Christmas - My kind of present!

The PLL special airs on ABC Family tonight at 8 pm.

Keira Knightley Hits Back At Domestic Violence

Keira Knightley

I know this PSA by the lovely and talented Ms. Keira Knightley is not new, it was done around the time Chris Brown beat up Rhianna, but it is powerful and the subject matter bears to be kept in our consciousness.

Ms Knightley had this to say about the PSA against domestic violence when she did it:

"I wanted to take place in this advert for Women's Aid because while domestic violence exists in every section of society, we rarely hear about it," Knightley said. "We may not think we know someone who has experienced domestic violence, but this does not mean that it is not happening."

Here are the facts:

  • 1 in 4 women has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime
  • Nearly 3 out of 4 Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence.
  • On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in this country every day.
Here is the PSA. Heads Up, very strong violent content, but very effective.

Michael Shinafelt Gets It In "The Summer Of Massacre"

Me & Scott Barrows: The Summer of Massacre Premiere
It’s time to turn the tables on the blogger, my nieces Shauna & Kelly Waters are interviewing me, yes me, about my horror movie debut “The Summer of Massacre”.

Yep, I am in the horror movie that is registered with The Guinness Book of World Records as having the highest body count of any slasher movie ever and it is out on DVD, now. Oh Yeah, and I am one of those bodies…

Alright nieces, bring it on…!

S&K: I know you've been a huge fan of horror movies for a long time, was being in one everything you expected?

MS: And more! I loved every minute of it!

S&K: What was it like being "murdered" on screen?

MS: Awesome!

S&K: Now that you've been in a movie, does it spoil the magic of movies now that you know what goes on behind the scenes?

MS: Not at all, what appears in the finished film is so different than what it’s like shooting it, it is truly fun to see the end result of the movie magic you have helped create.

S&K: Would you be open to more acting if the opportunity presented itself?

MS: Hell Yes!

S&K: What was the most difficult part of your scene?

MS: Needing to go to the bathroom in the middle of the shot and holding it (kidding) Honestly there was nothing difficult about the shoot, it was completely fun!

S&K: What was the atmosphere like being on the set of the horror film? Was it scary on set, or was it hard to act scared?

Me & Director, Joe Castro: The Summer Of Massacre Premiere

MS: No, the set was not scary. But it was not hard to act scared either, Joe Castro (The Director) was fun to work with…making it easy to slip into being freaked out!

S&K: What did your acting experience consist of before being a part of “The Summer of Massacre“?

MS: Community, College & a couple of Los Angeles theatre credits. Also a bit part as a Leather Daddy Vampire on “The Lair”.

S&K: I know you have some actors as friends, did you ask them for any advice while preparing for the movie?

MS: No.

S&K: What was your favorite part about being on set?

MS: Being in front of the camera, of course!

S&K: For your role in the movie, did you go strictly by the script or was there a chance for you to do some improv?

MS: I was told to wing the dialogue (which is not in the final cut) as the killer was coming at me. The Director said: say and act like you would if someone was coming at you with the intent to kill. Well I would be pi$$ed off and cuss them out, so that is what I did, as you know firsthand Shauna I have trucker mouth. (laughs) Even though the dialogue is not in the final cut of the film it helped in the performance that you see.

S&K: Did you build any relationships while on set?

MS: Well, I knew the Director, Joe Castro before I was cast in the movie. I also keep in contact with one of the actresses Kimmarie Johnson, even though we have no scenes together we were on set at the same time.

Me & Kimmarie Johnson: The Summer Of Massacre Premiere

S&K: Were there a lot of special effects used for your particular scene? If so what were they?

MS: We did practical effects on set, meaning I really had fake blood and gore all over me, however in the finished product all of the effects were added digitally, the look of the film is really great fun! The actual on set stuff that was done added to what you see on screen.

S&K: I know you are a huge fan of the movie, but what was your favorite part of it?

MS: If I divulged that I would have to kill you….
