Film Buff Friday: Zombie For Sale

An infectiously funny slice of modern Korean cinema where Train to Busan, The Quiet Family and Warm Bodies collide to create a memorable rom-zom-com from first time director Lee Min-jae. When the illegal human experiments of Korea's biggest Pharmaceutical company go wrong, one of their "undead" test subjects escapes and ends up in a shabby gas station owned by the Park family - a band of misfits spanning three generations who hustle passers-by to make ends meet. When the Park family uncover their undead visitor, he bites the head of their household, who instead of transforming into an undead ghoul becomes revitalised and full of life! The family then hatch a plan to exploit this unexpected fountain of youth, allowing locals to pay to be bitten too, until things go wrong... With a cabbage-munching zombie who prefers ketchup over blood, and a dysfunctional family that gives the Kim family of Parasite a run for their money, Zombie for Sale will warm the deadest of hearts and breathe some new life into the zombie genre.

Monday Motivation

With merely three days to Halloween today's Monday Motivation is the adage "Follow Your Heart."

In keeping with the Season of the Witch I have provided a macabre to some, delightful to others illustration of this.

"Follow Your Heart" is a personal thing that I can not, therefore will not define for you. Let's just say it is for certain not the "Tell-Tale Heart" now that's something really scary! The other can be too just not in a supernatural sort of way.

Thus today I am going to go where my heart leads me. Except I will not have mine outside my body on a leash.

Yeah, if I did that I would be dead, and unable to get my bliss on. Only if I was a Zombie that could work, and then I'd most likely gnaw on it or something to that grotesque effect.

It's time, you have your Monday Motivation mission, get to it minions!

OZG: Rihanna

Bad Ass To The Bone
Rihanna
With the countdown to Halloween in full force I'd like to show my support for one Rihanna. Who Turned down performing at the upcoming Superbowl in support of Colin Kaepernick

(Yeah, we now get Maroon 5 instead (meh) - bur considering why that happened I'm down with it.)

This is  a balls to the wall decision that I respect and admire her for. Thus it seems fitting to back her today all dressed up for Halloween as, what else? A Zombie Gangster, naturally.

"Yes" Rhi, Rhi is the OZG (original zombie gangster) and the grooviest of all the ghouls in this truly appropriate for the season and her current political stand get up.

Bend it like Rihanna this Season of the Witch and let loose your OZG, OWG or OG with a rebel yell!

Tis' a mere 11 more days until Halloween - you go ghouls!

Saturday Sinema: Between Night and Dawn

Remembering George A. Romero...

There's Always VanillaSeason of the Witch, and The Crazies, made between
Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, showcase the extraordinary versatility
and dynamism of this irreplaceable American auteur... Three films from the late,
legendary horror director, George A. Romero, showing that although he might
have defined zombie cinema, it didn't define him.

Synopsis:

THERE'S ALWAYS VANILLA (1971)
Young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset.
SEASON OF THE WITCH (1972)
Joan Mitchell is a bored housewife whose dissatisfaction with her humdrum life leads to an unhealthy interest in the occult.

THE CRAZIES (1973)
A small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which sends its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy.

We like it because:

When George A. Romero passed away in July, the film world didn't just lose its beloved 'King of Zombies', but also a groundbreaking and fearless innovator who inspired not only generations of genre directors, but also experimental and guerilla filmmakers for whom he laid down the template.

The three films collected in this box set - two early Seventies 'lost films' and a classic plague panic thriller - show there's more to the legendary director than simply gut-munching ghouls. The comedy romance There's Always Vanilla, psychological thriller Season of the Witch, and infection horror The Crazies - all filmed in and around Pittsburgh - serve to display the broader thematic concerns and auteurist leanings of a skilled craftsman too often pigeonholed within the genre; that said, The Crazies is one of his strongest horror offerings, with memorable performances from Lynn Lowry and Richard Liberty.
Romero managed to inject his films with subtle social allegories, nuanced examinations of the human condition, and just the right amount of black humor, so that they were immediately recognized as his and his alone. The box set showcases the director feeling his way towards the mainstream and showing a formidable assurance in three very distinct genres.

This fantastic box set includes brand new restorations of the three films, a lavish 60-page booklet featuring new writing on this fascinating chapter of Romero's career, a wealth of extras including interviews, featurettes and behind the scenes documentaries, reversible sleeves for all three films featuring original and newly-commissioned artwork, and a beautifully designed and striking slipcase featuring an iconic image of the man himself.

Chained To The Rhythm

Let's Get Political
Katy Perry & Friends
"Stumbling around like a wasted zombie, Yeah, we think we're free, Drink, this one is on me" - Chained To The Rhythm, Katy Perry

Being that it's Monday and such, I thought it appropriate to kick off the week with Katy Perry performing her latest song Chained To The Rhythm at the iHeartRadio Music Awards last night.

Ms. Perry has come a long way from when she was a mere pop tart singing I Kissed A Girl. First off she is no longer a brunette, she is now platinum blonde. Also her music as an artist has grown to new heights with her current 80's style political song Chained To The Rhythm.

Part of the video depicts the customers at the amusement park where it is set going round in circles on a hamster wheel, thus my feeling it is the perfect song to kick off Monday, or not depending on your world view. I personally try to live my life to the fullest and stay positive. Part of that is being aware of everything and taking it all in not just the "good" - I firmly believe part of being happy is being aware.

I will confess I am currently obsessed with this single, I can't get enough of it I think it's brilliant. Yep,I just used the "B" word. It reminds me not to view everything with rose colored glasses on using my favorite medium, music.

Since I am a giver you can check out the song and the tubular video below.

Happy Monday Minions!

My Zombie Boyfriend

Corpses Have More Fun!
Vanessa Hudgens
Former High School Musical and Spring Breakers star Vanessa Hudgens brings all the boys to the yard, including Zombies.

While attending Knott's Scary Farm this smooth walking dead operator couldn't seem to keep his bony fingers off of Ms. Hudgens as she politely indulged him, or perhaps even enjoyed the attention from the animated corpse who was hitting on her.

No word yet on whether he followed her home.

Happy Monday!

He's Just An Edgar Allan Poe Boy

What do Edgar Allan Poe & Black Cats have in common?

Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cats: Two Adaptations by Sergio Martino & Lucio Fulci

Edgar Allan Poe's celebrated story The Black Cat has provided the inspiration for numerous films over the years. But few adaptations are as stylish as those offered up by the twin Italian titans of terror, Sergio Martino and Lucio Fulci.

In Martino's classic giallo Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, teacher Oliviero (Luigi Pistilli, A Bay of Blood) finds himself under suspicion for murder when one of his students - and mistress - is found brutally murdered. As more bodies start to pile up, the arrival of Oliviero's attractive niece (Edwige Fenech, Five Dolls for an August Moon, All the Colours of the Dark) brings with it complications of its own.

In The Black Cat, from that "other" Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci (Zombie), Scotland Yard Inspector Gorley (David Warbeck, The Beyond) find himself summoned to a sleepy English village to investigate the recent murder of a young couple. With no obvious signs of entry at the murder scene, Gorley is forced to start considering the possibility that his suspect may not be human...

Finally together on Blu-ray and in stunning new 2K restorations from the original camera negatives, fans can enjoy the double-dose of terror that is Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cats - Italian-style!
