Repulsion

Born To Hand Jive
Catherine Deneuve
Repulsion
While on Facebook yesterday an app came through to plug in your birth year to find out what was the big horror movie at that time. So for the thrill and chill of it, I did just that. Well guess what came up from the great beyond? Roman Polanski's Repulsion starring Catherine Deneuve, oh alright, the year was 1965.

Here is the synopsis:

"A sex-repulsed woman who disapproves of her sister's boyfriend sinks into depression and has horrific visions of rape and violence."

While I did not see it the year it was out, duh, I did happen to view it in my twenties, not knowing it was the big fright fest of the year of my birth. I knew that being born a snake was cool, now it has been solidified.

It is time for another viewing of this classic, with me being older and wiser. While I liked it when I first saw it, I believe this is a film, like so many, that gets better with life experience.

Besides who can resist the eternal beauty of Deneuve and the Directing mastery of Polanski?

Yeah, I thought not...only four more days until Halloween!

CHERIE CURRIE & BRIE DARLING
Join Together to Release New Album “The Motivator” - Out August 2

Los Angeles-based, female rock icons, Cherie Currie and Brie Darling have joined together to record their debut album, The Motivator.  The album was produced by the six-time Grammy nominated Dave Darling (Brian Setzer, Stray Cats, Janiva Magness, Tom Waits) and features nine classic covers by bands including T. Rex, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, plus three powerful new originals, “Too Bruised,” “I’m Too Good, That’s Just Too Bad” and the topical “This Is Our Time.”  The album will be released August 2, 2019 on Blue Élan Records with the title-track, lead single, out  on all streaming services.
Listen  HERE

The Runaways front-woman and solo artist, Currie, met the Fanny drummer and singer, Darling, in 2017 and immediately connected.  Currie had come in to contribute vocals to Fanny Walked the Earth, a reunion album from the trailblazing Fanny, the first all-female band signed to a major label (Reprise) in 1969.  Though the two musicians were certainly admirers of each other, they had not yet met until that session.  Once connected, the idea to continue collaborating was hatched and soon the idea to record an album was solidified.

It was decided they would record an album of cover songs that resonated with the duo.  The covers chosen mostly share—unintentionally—a socio-political resonance that’s as relevant today as when the songs were written.  “The original album concept was that Brie was going to sing a few, I’d sing a few, and we’d back each other up,” furthers Currie. “But I knew our voices really work well together. On T. Rex’s ‘The Motivator,’ Brie did a great soulful rock scratch vocal but maybe I have more of a tough rock quality to my voice, so I think Dave decided I was going to sing it.  But in my head I heard a duet, me doing the first verse, her on the second verse….and that started the dialog of using our voices together as a concept. Our voices complement each other, so we decided we should share the majority of these songs, because it makes them better.”  Producer Dave Darling says, "It's extremely rare to have two such powerful vocalists in the same band. Cherie's a steam roller and Brie's a flame thrower. That just doesn't happen!"

Guests on the album include a host of family and friends who came in to do backups, including Currie’s sister, actress Sondra Currie, her ex-husband, actor Robert Hays; friends, Susan Olsen of Brady Bunch fame and actress/director, Allison Scagliotti. Darling’s brother, Henry Berry is on “He Ain’t Heavy”; and brother Phil Berry does a guitar solo on the Kinks tune “Do it Again” while her sister, Rory Berry Bishop plays drums on Thunderclap Newman’s “Something in the Air.” Patti Quatro—Suzi’s sister and a member of Fanny—plays guitar and sings on “For What It’s Worth.”

At The Drive-In

I remember Drive-Ins...

From sleeping in the concession stand to working entirely for free, the quirky film fanatics at the struggling Mahoning Drive-in face uncertainty when Hollywood announces it will switch to digital projection for all new movies. Unable to purchase an expensive digital projector, the Mahoning gang pin their hopes of survival on showing only vintage 35mm film prints on their original 1949 projectors. Relive their underdog story to save film, the Mahoning Drive-in, and drive-in theaters everywhere.

"Technology moves so fast today, faster than ever before. As technology distracts us from one another and segments us further into smaller audiences, it was just magical to see a bunch of people gather together in rural Pennsylvania to watch film flicker through a projector from 1948," Alexander Monelli, director. "That's ultimately what this documentary is about."

At The Drive-in won "Best Local Feature" at the 26th annual Philadelphia Film Festival. It has also screened at multiple Alamo Drafthouses and at TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as an official selection of Dances With Films.

Bonus Materials
  • Over 17 Minutes of Deleted Scenes
  • Three Separate Feature Length Commentary Tracks (two with cast and one with director)

Michael's Musings

In Your Face
Michael Shinafelt
This past weekend the Academy Awards happened and proved after a progressive 2018 show when Moonlight won Best Picture, that there must have been a momentary loss of sense and sensibility from the old van guard because they were back in full force by touting Green Book Best Picture this year. Which would have been a great film if it had been made the year I was born 1965.

Oh and Michael Cohen testified against a B!tch Baby, I mean Donald Trump yesterday. In other news...

AHS: Cult

While I am not going to review last night's shenanigans on American Horror Story: Cult I will say this - who knows what the hell is going on? Please if you do, or think you do, spill!

Election night 2016 kicks off this season that had many WTF?! moments in it. How WTF?! were they Michael? Evan Peters character Kai urinating in a condom and tossing it at a group of Latino immigrants spouting racial slurs. A gang of clowns one who masturbates in front of Sarah Paulson's Ally while two others of the insane clown posse fornicate in front of her.

As if Donald Trump "leading" our country isn't freaky enough, we now have to contend with this shit as a result of him being elected???

The only thing I can state about last night's premiere is it left me in a state of confusion as to where this season is going to lead. This could be a good thing although it turned out that it was not so good when Roanoke aired last season and turned out to be even worse than Coven.

Yeah, of course I will keep watching. The crazy array of scenarios trotted out before me last night were completely nuts! I hope where this path leads is equally so.

Wonder Woman Friday

Wonder Women
Gal Gadot & Lynda Carter
Since I stumbled upon the set stage for the Wonder Woman premiere before it began last week in Hollywood I thought I might as well give the movie's opening space on my blog.

I mean seriously couldn't we all use Wonder Woman in our lives stat? With a rouge President and and uncertain future for the U.S. she is exactly the voice and presence the world needs ASAP!

Whether I see the film or not, it is getting great reviews and leading lady Gal Gadot has been deemed a worthy successor to Lynda Carter who made the character famous on television.

Also the photo taken at the premiere above of Lynda passing the proverbial torch to Gal put a smile on my face. After this past week, this is personally what I needed, and I feel it is a pretty safe bet the majority of you feel the same.

So this weekend unleash your inner Wonder Woman, and use your powers for the betterment of the world we live in.

That goes for you too men, we all have a Wonder Woman in us!

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day
Michael Shinafelt
Happy Mother's Day! Yep, this is the day we celebrate all you Mother's out there, you've earned it!

This is going to be a short column, because I am a short man. I would simply like express my gratitude to my Mother Jan Landburg-Shinafelt

No matter how many tough times there have been, and there have been many, Mom I have always been able to count on you to be there.

I custom made the image above and posted it on her Facebook wall exclusively for her. Oh, and I have also included my favorite pic of her and myself in this blog and posted it on Facebook and Twitter in celebration of the big "M."
My Favorite Mother
Ain't Social Media grand? Also this will be the first and last time you will ever hear me use the term "ain't" in my writing. I know it is now recognized by Webster's as an actual word, but it wasn't when I was a kid growing up.

In fact my Mother used to say, when I uttered it: "Ain't, ain't fell in the paint" - I rest my case.

Wishing all the Mother's out there a happy, happy, joy, joy!!!

The Final Countdown

Giving Shhhh Finger Realness
The Pretty Little Liars
l-r Lucy Hale, Sasha Pieterse, Troian Bellasario, Ashley Benson & Shay Mitchell

"Got a secret, Can you keep it? Swear this one you’ll save, Better lock it, in your pocket, Taking this one to the grave...."

Can you believe tonight is the first of the last ten times we will ever hear the theme song to Pretty Little Liars again? Well OK, there are re-runs etc...it will be the last ten times we ever hear it with new episodes.

I remember when I first saw PLL I believe it was already in it's second season and I had been hearing so much about it that one night I turned it on out of curiosity, from that moment on I was hooked. Escapist entertainment at it's finest!

Fond memories of driving my then boyfriend crazy by insisting we catch up on the show when he was over are the best. There was also the time when I was going through a rough period and the show lifted my spirits then there was another time...well you get the picture.

One Happy "PLL" Fan
Me & Sasha Pieterse
While the show ending will be like losing an old friend who has always been there for you, the time for it to wrap itself up has definitely come.

So with fond memories and anticipation of seeing what will happen to my favorite "Liars" I am excited for the final countdown to the end of the show.

If any of you need me you know where to find me tonight at 8!

Hellbent For Leather - Lady Gaga

Obey Everything I Say
Lady Gaga
While most of us celebrated Easter by having brunch with friends or feasting with family, a handful of others trekked to the California desert to attend the Coachella music festival which was headlined by the one and only Lady Gaga.

Our Lady of Gaga debuted her new single "The Cure" there much to the delight of her fans. Trust me I know first hand they were delighted because, you know, the postings on Facebook about the ditty were nothing short or orgasmic.

Looking like a dominatrix might have helped put the song over with the audience too. Hey it's Gaga she can do whatever she wants and does.

Personally leather is my look and I can understand the Lady being hellbent for it. Leather it does a body good, especially if you are _____ the blank is yours to fill in, I'm just the tease.

It's Monday time to get on with it and get over it, it's time to bend it like Lady Gaga

Ciao!

Stranger Things, Monsterpalooza

The Odd Couple
Ann Robinson & Ron Jeremy

This past weekend an event that is stranger than fiction and on the edge of glory took place in Pasadena, CA. Prepare thy self for Monsterpalooza!

Monsterpalooza celebrates the art of monsters and movie magic. Which brings me to the stranger than fiction part of the event.

Call it When Ann Met Ron or Two Worlds Collide, or whatever your devilish little heart desires. The palooza brought together classic War of the Worlds (1953) star Ann Robinson and an all together unique kind of creature Ron Jeremy. Ron in case you aren't aware is famous for the giant monster inside his pants, a porn star!

When I saw this image of beauty and the hedgehog come through on my Facebook feed via Ann's son, musician Estefan Bravo, well being a giver I just had to post it to kick off the week.

On that note, enjoy your Monday and if you are observant, Happy Passover!

James Franco's Self Love

It's Better With A Friend
Keegan Allen & James Franco
"When I think about you I touch myself" -
I Touch Myself, Divinyls

Fact: Celebrities have sex too, as if you didn't already know that. Sometimes they have it with others and sometimes they are so busy that they only have time for some self love.

Judging from James Franco's comments regarding the subject matter I am guessing he's fly's solo more than playing well with others. "Yes" moments in bed with the likes of Keegan Allen of Pretty Little Liars fame are far and few between for James and his Franco

Here is what he has to say about how he let's go:

"It's like you have those days where it's just like, I have a ton of writing to do, or a ton of reading to do, and you're just like, okay, I'm going to be on the couch all day or in bed all day just doing that."

Get it? Got It? Good...Now you have the image of Franco going to his happy place lodged in your brain with no chance of banishment.

Chill out, as James would say "Relax!"

Things That Make You Go Shhhhhhh...

Got A Tattoo?
l-r Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, Sasha Pieterse,
Lucy Hale & Janel Parrish
The final season of Pretty Little Liars is already wrapped and ready for it's eagerly anticipated April 18th premiere date, yes I said eagerly anticipated premiere date, don't judge me. What's a "Liar" to do after seven successful seasons? Why commemorate the show with a tattoo of course!

Where are they?! What are they?! You beg to ask. Well being as the show is about secrets and keeping them and the iconic opening credits show all the "Liars" wagging there Shhhhhhh finger at you to keep your mouth shut, each of the cast members got the the first letter of the name of their respective characters tattooed on their, what else, Shhhhhhh finger, naturally.

That's correct minions Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse got themselves a tattoo artist to inscribe their pointer finger with the first letter of their character from the shows first name. How could they not after all "A" has put them through?!

Enjoy the photo above of all the girls sharing their pseudo matching tatts, because sharing is caring after all.

Monday, Monday....Stranger Things

"Monday, Monday, So good to me, Monday morning, It was all I hoped it would be" - The Mamas & The Papas

It's the Monday after the Screen Actors Guild Awards and there were some amazing speeches last nice in case you missed them.

Well since I have been super busy this weekend and am headed to a 6:30 am taping of Fashion Police this morning, let me leave you with one of them.

The cast of Stranger Things won for best ensemble in a drama series. The gang gave the mic over to star David Harbour better known as Chief Jim Hopper and boy was it amazing!

Thus I leave you with it to kick your week off on a positive note. I need to motor Margaret Cho and Melissa Rivers are waiting.

PS - be sure to check out Winona Ryder's facial expressions too, they are the best!

Get ready for a spoonful of truth!

Mannequin Madness!

Taylor Swift, Todrick Hall & Friends
How was everyone's Black Friday? If you descended into madness and went shopping I hope you got what you wanted and your body parts are still intact. If you are not insane, like me, you stayed home and ate some more, woot!

Something that has been a thing of late is the Mannequin Challenge. I have seen so many videos posted on Facebook & Instagram of friends & family taking it over the Thanksgiving Holiday, good times!

Well you just know Taylor Swift along with her friends and family would not be left out, and of course try to one up everyone else by striking a pose on the beach in the chill of fall. It was all captured for her Instagram page, naturally.

She along with Todrick Hall who is starring in Kinky Boots on Broadway took on Turkey Day and the cold to pose like a mannequin below. Hey standing still on a cold deserted beach sounds like a saner idea than going to an overcrowded mall with shoppers clawing for bargains...

Check it out after the jump!

Sandy Zacky On Orlando #WeAreOrlando

With the tragedy in Orlando still lingering. I held off on addressing it initially because I wanted to process my own thoughts and feelings. Everyone is still reacting as well they should, it was the biggest mass shooting in the United States ever.

People should be concerned, not just gay people. This is something we must pay attention and attend to. It can and most likely will happen again at a place and time you would least expect.

As a gay man of course I am upset. However it hit me in a more general way, I think about the potential of such an incident in the many familiar places I travel throughout my day. Let's face it no where and no one is safe.

What I wanted to do was give a different point of view on this, perhaps not even mine but something that could add to the dialogue. Here is a fresh prospective. This is from a grandmother who worries about the country and what the future of it holds for her grandchildren. Her name is Sandy Zacky, you may remember her as Entertain Me's resident chanteuse. She wrote this powerful statement the morning of the shooting on her Facebook page:

"I am sure what is on my mind is what is on most people's mind.
I feel sick, angry, helpless and more.

What now? It is my grandchildren and their generation that I fear for the most.

What are we we leaving them? A sick world of people whose only quest is to kill those who don't believe as they do. They think we are immoral but who is more immoral than those who MURDER innocents who just want to live
their lives the way they choose?

Those of you who are that sick may murder but you will not take the US down. You are the cowards we will be the survivors!"

Perfectly stated Sandy. Here is a song she performed with her singing partner Mike Clifford dedicated to the victims and survivors of the tragedy, Love Is Everything -

With congress recently turning a blind eye to the problem at hand, something needs to be done...now, before a tragedy like this can happen again.

Happy Father's Day!

Me and My Dad, Bill Shinafelt
Photo: Jan Landburg-Shinafelt
Today is the day that we honor our Fathers, "yes" it's Father's Day people! I have a request of all of you, if your Dad is still living please let him know you love him today. Whether it be a phone call, card, Facebook post on his wall or some sort of gift.

A Father's love should be unconditional and I was lucky enough to have a Dad whose was.

My Father is deceased and I miss him all of the time. He passed away February 23, 2009. The cause of his death was lung cancer. His doctors gave him six months to live, he then decided to quit smoking his beloved pipe. He lived for three years and died two days after his 76th Birthday.

In honor of my Father I would like to take this moment to draw attention to two things.

First smoking is directly related to cancer, if you think it isn't you are wrong. When my Dad went into a hospice and died two days later after his three year long battle he was next to a gentleman who had also been given six months to live, but did not quit smoking. Guess what? Unlike my Dad who gave it up and survived three years after his diagnosis, the other man passed within that given time frame.

In short, smoking blows, literally if you smoke please stop.

Second cancer is the number one cause of death in the world and trust me, it's not a pretty one. Please let's never forget that, for more information about cancer and to donate towards fighting it please click on the link to The American Cancer Society below.

Happy Father's Day, Dad!

Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd
As predicted by myself and many others Nyle DiMarco and his partner Peta Murgatroyd walked off with the Mirror Ball on Dancing With The Stars. Making Nyle a champ of two competition shows, America's Next Top Model being the first of course.
Here is a statement from Nyle about his DWTS win via his Facebook page:

"I CANT BELIEVE IT!! WE WON! WE WON THE MIRROR BALL!!! The first DEAF WINNER! This is for 70 million of Deaf people in the world! This is for all the Deaf kids suffering language deprivation. Only 2% of 70 million of Deaf people have access to education in sign language. More than 75% of parents don't sign to their Deaf kids. Winning this is a HUGE step to ending LANGUAGE DEPRIVATION of millions.
Thank you all for your continuing support. It means A LOT!"

Congratulations Nyle & Peta you guys truly earned and deserved your win!
