Hump Day & Chill

The Women of Beverly Hills

OK, I'll admit it! I watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Hey, we all have guilty pleasures and tonight is Part II of the reunion. For those out of the loop this is when all the women have watched the current season that just aired and get together to discuss, relive and go for the jugular with one another.

Thus, in case you haven't guessed I (and anyone who cares to join me) am going to Hump Day & Chill to the women and them being reunited and see who calls out who for what transpired during their 13th season.

FYI Beverly Hills is the only Housewives show I actually watch, I didn't want to leave the impression I was a Houwewives connoisseur after all.

Yep, it's a self indulgent Hump Day & Chill and you know what?!

I've earned it!

The Outsider

I've always been Out. I've made Outsider art. I've had Outrageous sex.

I've lived in times when to be Out was to be a bit of an Outlaw.

I like being an Outlaw  - Phil Tarley

On March 12 on Vice TV's Sex Before The Internet, sexual stylist  Phil Tarley will be interviewed in an episode about legendary gay porn directors. Sex Before The Internet explores a world before Pornhub and Onlyfansanalog-style! Tarley is the only fellow of the American Film Institute ever inducted into the Gay Porn Hall of Fame as producer-director Phil St. John, his nom de porn.  "I’ve directed hundreds of men having sex, choreographing them for moving cameras, like a pas deux or pas de trois. "  In  Below The Belt (1986), starring Chad Douglas,  St.John staged the first double penetration ever photographed in gay porn. DP's went on to be adapted into the sexual practice and fantasy life of almost every gay man in America. Double penetration became St. John's leitmotif culminating in his "gay porn Oscar" for Double Delights.

In the early 90s, the times swirled with currents of unique queer cultural and political change. Tarley grabbed his camera and traveled around the country, documenting the queerest subcultures he could find. He used that footage to make, The Year of The Queer, which debuted at the American Film Institute Film Festival in 1992. Tarley is currently editing a feature-length political and cultural documentary of those wild times of earthshaking queer changes in our society. Somewhat of a revolutionary, Tarley/St. John has been an in-your-face- take no prisoners-- street activist his entire life. He's been on the frontlines shooting video, performing in guerilla theater, rioting, protesting, being arrested and jailed in actions with ACTUP, Queer Nation, The Gay Liberation Front, Students For a Democratic Society (SDS), and back in the day, The Cockettes and The Angels of Light, when Tarley was dragged-up and drugged up enough to get on stage.

"For me, politics, sex, travel, and adventure continue to be inseparable. Perhaps the wildest porn-making experience of my life was when I was in Puerto Rico shooting two tropical dick movies back-to-back in the jungles near San Juan. I couldn’t wait to write it up as a story.  I feel that now, the times are right to take my “novella” Diary of A Puerto Rican Porno and make it into a feature film. "

March 23 & March 24: New Orleans

Phil Tarley will be reading from his porno diary and from his just-completed autobiography at the Tennessee Williams, Saints, and Sinners Literary Festival at The Hotel Monteleone, in the Royal Dee Room, on March 23 at 10 AM and on March 24 at 1 PM.

Saints and Sinners, a program of the Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival, features LGBTQ+ writers, publishers, small presses, booksellers, promoters, and other literary professionals creating a community and network for the LGBTQ+ literary world.

Tarley/St. John is available for on-camera, phone, or print interviews. Contact him via email.

Phil Tarley, writer, filmmaker, curator, photographer, and critic has written for American Photo, LA Weekly, Wow Report, Fabrik, Advocate, Out, and other print and online publicationsExcerpts of his work-in-progress autobiography have been published in The Gay and Lesbian Literary Review. https://glreview.org/thirteen/   https://glreview.org/how-i-learned-to-grift/ Tarley's on-camera cultural commentary is featured in four documentaries, which include Circus of Books on Netflix and Seed Money: The Chuck Holmes Story on Amazon Prime. MARCH 12: WATCH PHIL TARLEY ON VICE TV'S SEX BEFORE THE INTERNET

Monday Motivation

Our Monday Motivation today is this piece of wisdom from Susan Sontag.

It hits the nail on the proverbial head and goes deep. One should always strive to lead their life as they wish as much as they possibly can.

Also getting older is a privilege not many people are afforded. So treat it like a gift. My fifties have been the best years of my life and I am grateful that I have been allowed to experience this wonderful time.

Remember Minions tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.

Keep on dreaming and living.

Now that's Monday Motivation on steroids!!!

Sunday Funday

Today I am feeling footloose and frivilous, thus I hereby bequeath you with a meme that tickled my pickle when I saw it.

Being a fan of Scarface and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre well...the lure of this mash up was too hard to resist and not make a Sunday Funday post of.

Sharing is caring after all and sometimes ya just wanna spread the entertaiment.

After adding levity to your day, don't say I never did anything for you and yours....

"Yes" it's that kind of party!!!

"No Condition"

LA area punk / power-pop band For Closure has released a new single "No Condition" via Mindpower Records.

Stream "No Condition" HERE: https://orcd.co/nocondition

For Closure drummer/producer Wal Rashidi says, “No Condition” encapsulates much of what I love and seek in a song. And I can say this as someone who’s somewhat detached from it, as I didn’t have a hand in the songwriting, just the production.

For Closure

It is equal parts bold and expressive in its outro, counterbalanced with intimate and sparse in its verses. The arpeggiated, glassy guitar tones we dialed in are an imperfect nod to the 1980s new wave/post-punk watery riffs emanating from the Roland Jazz Chorus amps in videos we grew up watching on MTV (or listening to early KROQ hits). Gizz’s (frontman Gizz Lazlo- Dr. Know, U.K. Subs, The Freeze, Dead Lazlo’s Place) legato vocals, delicately draped over my thunderous toms, recall bands like The Icicle Works, though they also possess the muscle and motivation of Samiam’s Jason Beebout.

I am satisfied with my mix of this song, probably because it happened so effortlessly. I love how the dozen-plus tracks of backing vocals neatly charted their course as they float amid the ether of the song, simultaneously transparent yet plenty apparent. Luis’s tight, crunchy guitar riffing in the bridge eventually yields to a full-throttle send of the outro, with the densely-layered choir repeatedly exclaiming “noooo!” as I hammer quarter notes on the crash cymbal — it really thrusts this cut into an elevated stratum and provides the mashed-pedal drive it deserves, even if the lyrics state an emphatic opposition that, “I’m in no condition / to drive you all the way home!”

What makes it even more impressive was watching Gizz on the other side of the glass, in the vocal booth at the recording studio — the eponymous, succinctly-monikered Studio — in Redlands, California, absolutely nailing it all in one take. I’m nearly sure I exclaimed a stunned “wow” as the hair rose on my arms (I have hairy arms, too). I could somehow still sense the sweet and mildly-spiced waft of a Djarum Special clove cigarette he had just dusted off mere minutes before nailing this cut, quizzically piercing its way through the double-paned window into the control room (“I see you walking through / that crowded, smoky room”). While I already knew Gizz was highly competent at his craft, I didn’t realize Gizz could be unassailably stellar in the studio. (Given this is my first album as a solo producer, perhaps I was just gifted a stroke of beginner’s luck?)

I think “No Condition” could resonate with just about anyone listening. It’s beautiful, powerful and might serve as the flagship track on this forthcoming full-length album by For Closure. I also hope that “No Condition” encapsulates much of what you love and seek in a song."
