Leave The World Behind

Julia Roberts

The hot Netflix film presently is Leave The World Behind starring Julia Roberts & Ethan Hawke. It is proving to be divisive among the audience and that's not hard to understand why.

So here you are going to get my quick hot take on it as to why I liked it. First off let's refer to the meme above. This is how Ms. Roberts closes an opening monologue, this closed the deal for me to continue watching.

A lot of fuss has been made about how the movie seems random and not connected. While I don't disagree with that entirely. I liked that about it. It was a bold choice IMHO because that is the way a situation like this would play out in real life. Do any of you know exactly what you would do or how you would behave, let alone what would happen when no one really knows what's happening in a situation like this? Yeah, I thought not...

There is that ending, which I felt captured the spirit of the rest of the story the film told. No one knows anything and they are trying to figure out who and what they are in this extreme situation.

My only real criticism is it felt all too possible and real to me, and that Minions is truly frightening!!!

Take 5: Tom Connan

Tom Connan is an artist whose work embodies all aspects of the human condition.

His latest song and video "Charlie" is inspired by the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris.

For the uninitiated here is the 411 on it:

"Two gunmen armed with automatic rifles stormed the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, a target for Islamist terrorists since it printed cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in 2006 and 2011, and killed cartoonists and satirists whose names were called out as they were shot dead in turn."
It goes without saying that I had to hit Tom up to "Take 5" for all of you, as in five questions addressing his latest project. You've got this Tom...

MS: Why do you have an affinity with Charlie Hebdo?

TC: I don’t have any direct affinity with Charlie Hebdo, however when the terrorist attack against them happened in 2015, the world was deeply shocked. I was, too. On 9/11, I was a child so I wasn’t able to really understand what it meant. In 2015, I couldn’t believe haters had killed innocent journalists and caricaturists. I was still sleeping when my mum woke me up and yelled at me: ”they killed Charlie Hebdo!”. It is a symbol, as this is the first attack of many that happened since: Orlando, Barcelona, Manchester, Paris… Basically I had written the track “Charlie” a few days after the attack but I didn’t want to release it. But recently, I thought I had to.
 Charlie (sick mix)

MS: Give me your take on the current state of democracy

TC: I have the impression some people under-estimate the crisis of democracy. Anti-Semitism is terribly strong, as well as homophobia and sexism. Sometimes I feel my mum grew up in a more peaceful time. I may be wrong. But I’m not that sure.

MS: You use skin in the video. You once told me how you love nudity, extrapolate

TC: For a long time I hated my body. Really. I was almost hiding myself with large clothes, as if I wanted to disappear. I feel better now, and when you feel better about who you are, you want to show it. Completely. It’s my own therapy.

MS: When you give a Rebel Yell, do you want more, more, more?

TC: I’m not sure I understand what you mean, but as far as “Charlie” is a rebel yell, yes, I believe it can reach the unconscious mind, which is my hidden goal. You can do much more with the unconscious than you can with the conscious. Don’t you think?

MS: Name your favorite song, other than yours at this moment

TC:  was re-watching the old movie “Stepmom” starring Julia Roberts, and I heard that fabulous track “Ain’t no mountain high enough” from Marvin Gaye. Do you know any better song with the same kind of joy and energy? I don’t. It is brilliant. This is music. Other than that, I’m still listening to Jaden Smith’s Idol. Fucking good rap track.

Money Monster: Cannes, Cannes, Cannes

l-r Amal, George, Julia & Jodie
in Cannes
In case you have been distracted by other things the 2016 Cannes Film Festival has been happening and a movie with the title Money Monster played it and opened this past Friday.

No,I have yet to see it. Yes, it is on my list of films to do. Hey it stars George Clooney & Julia Roberts with Jodie Foster at the helm. Yeah, that puts it in "must see" territory for me.

So, I said to myself: Let's kick off the post Friday the 13th weekend with a really hot image of the trio and Clooney's catch of a wife Amal to start Monday the 16th off on a too cool note.

According to my favorite film buff Erik Rimmer

"Money Monster was a great film. I loved it. Tight direction and very suspenseful . Julia Roberts and George Clooney were fantastic."

Bask, it's Monday. Enjoy your week!!!

PS Cameron Diaz - I Love You

Cameron Diaz
Let me clarify my love of Ms. Diaz, she is one of my favorite comedic actresses ever!

I will never forget when I first saw her in The Mask with Jim Carrey, I was on Jury Duty and was seated in the waiting area and they had the video on for our amusement, she was the highlight of the film, at least for me.

I continued to follow her career post that, she was also the highlight of the Julia Roberts starer My Best Friend's Wedding, sorry Julia your character was such a mid section with a capital C word that, really, who the Hell would marry your selfish ass?! Cameron's character was by far the more charming of the two of you.

Of course there is the classic There's Something About Mary and a personal favorite the critically vilified The Sweetest Thing with Christina Applegate and Selma Blair. Who could not love the dick song?!!!!!!

Well Cameron has a new one coming out, Sex Tape on July 18th with the equally funny Jason Segel. I can't wait for these two to pair again as they were so amaze balls together in another fave of mine Bad Teacher.

Ms. Diaz is 41 and and loves it! I agree 100% on this one, the 40's are the best! Here is what she has to say about it:

"I love it," Diaz says  "So much s– just falls away. Fear, mostly. It's the best age. That's when a woman knows how to work things, or she doesn’t care about that anymore. You just stop being afraid. You don't worry about what men think. You just don't worry that time registers anything awful." - she recently told Esquire Magazine

Of note, she strips down in Sex Tape, marking the first time she's been completely nude on screen.

"It's a first for me. But Jason Segel, (who co-stars) gets naked, too. It's just part of the role. So I did it. I mean, you see everything."

You Go Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrl!

R.I.P: James Gandolfini

The news that James Gandolfini had died of a heart attack yesterday in Italy caught everyone by surprise. Mainly because the Emmy Award winning actor for his signature role of Tony Soprano on "The Sopranos" was only fifty-one years old.

Although I have never seen "The Sopranos" - I know, my friends tell me I should and that they are sure I would like it, so now I will. There are plenty of other things I have seen Mr. Gandolfini in, and he was always  one of the if not the only highlight.

I will never forget seeing him playing a gay Hit Man, Winston Baldry in the really lame Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts vehicle "The Mexican". The role was like Tony Soprano with a twist, James got to demonstrate a distinctive and sharp comedic flair.

So if you will excuse me I have a lot of catching up to do and am off to watch "The Sopranos" now...

Tony Soprano: Retarded? What if Jerry Lewis heard you talkin' like that?
