Film Buff Friday: Shortcut To Happiness

File this one under things that make you go Hmmmmm....

SHORTCUT TO HAPPINESS: After eighteen long years from production to release Shortcut to Happiness finally makes its debut on Blu-ray and DVD on July 16, 2019. Originally "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (the film's original title when it was in production in 2001) was to be the directorial debut of star Alec Baldwin. According to a 2007 Entertainment Weekly article, "production was vexed by alleged money problems and the FBI's bank-fraud investigation of a reported investor". According to a 2007 article in The Guardian, the movie grinded to a halt "during post-production when the FBI seized the investors' assets, including the film, in the course of a bank fraud investigation." Due to this and other rumored creative differences, Baldwin had his director credit removed from the film and replaced with the pseudonym "Harry Kirkpatrick". Baldwin's producing partner Jon Cornick told Entertainment Weekly in 2003, "We spent a lot of time and effort shooting the movie... It's not the movie that we intended to make."

Producer Bob Yari rescued the film from bankruptcy court and finished the film without Baldwin's participation which received limited theatrical screenings in 2007. Years later the film aired on Showtime and Starz channels but had never received a proper release on home video.

"I was presented with opportunity to license Shortcut To Happiness," according to MVD Entertainment Director of Acquisitions Eric D. Wilkinson. "Despite the movie's checkered past, I liked it. It reminded me of the high concept romantic comedies of the 1980's and 90's. It has a great cast and production values and I think fans of the genre will more than enjoy this film. So after eighteen years since the movie first started production, I'm excited to finally give Shortcut To Happiness a proper release on disc and digital".

Set in New York's literary world, Shortcut To Happiness is a contemporary re-telling of the classic short story ''The Devil and Daniel Webster'' featuring an all-star cast that includes Academy Award® Nominees Alec Baldwin (The Departed) and Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters), Academy Award® Winner Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Heartbreakers), Kim Cattrall ("Sex and the City"), Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man), Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation") and Darrell Hammond ("SNL").

Jabez Stone (Baldwin), a down on his luck writer, sells his soul to the devil (Love-Hewitt) in exchange for fame and fortune. But when things don't turn out as planned, Stone ultimately decides that he wants his old life again and enlists the help of Daniel Webster (Hopkins) in order to win his soul back from Satan, herself!

No More "Wicked Games" for Chris Isaak, It's nighttime that rates first for this crooner...

Chris Isaak’s new album FIRST COMES THE NIGHT, his first recording of all original songs in over six years, is available for pre-order beginning today. Fans can stream the title track which premiered exclusively via the Wall Street Journal.

FIRST COMES THE NIGHT is available for pre-order via iTunes and Amazon in two configurations – a standard version and a deluxe edition which includes five additional songs and an expanded booklet with added photos and illustrations. With each order, fans receive an instant download of the song “First Comes The Night.”

FIRST COMES THE NIGHT, produced by Paul Worley (Dixie Chicks, Lady Antebellum), Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell) and longtime Isaak collaborator Mark Needham, will be released on Vanguard Records on November 13th. Recorded primarily in Nashville and Los Angeles, FIRST COMES THE NIGHT with 12 new songs, is Isaak’s 13th studio album. A second configuration – a deluxe version with five additional cuts – will be released simultaneously.  FIRST COMES THE NIGHT is the follow up release to Isaak’s critically acclaimed 2011 BEYOND THE SUN, his breathtaking tribute album to Sun Records, Sam Phillips, and the visionary artists who helped shape the early sounds of rock n’ roll.

“There was no mission for this album other than to follow the songs, and in terms of songwriting, the floodgates really opened this time," Chris Isaak explains. "My last release was Beyond The Sun -- my tribute to Sun Records with a lot of covers -- so this time around I had a lot of new material that I was thrilled to record."

FIRST COMES THE NIGHT fittingly represents a number of firsts for Chris Isaak, who recently signed on to become a judge on the new season of X Factor Australia. As for FIRST COMES THE NIGHT, this is the first time that Isaak has written and recorded so much in Nashville, Tennessee. He recently spoke with USA Today about the experience.

With a stellar reputation as one of the best and funniest live performers out there, Isaak is a non-stop touring, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, actor and talk show host. His vocal style has garnered enormous acclaim and his songs have been featured in numerous films including “Blue Velvet”, “Married to the Mob” and “Wild at Heart.”  His vast repertoire of long running hits include “Wicked Game,” “Forever Blue,” “Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing” and “Somebody’s Crying.” He has appeared on many TV shows – most recently “Hot in Cleveland”, has acted in several films and starred in Showtime’s The Chris Isaak Show and the Chris Isaak Hour on the Biography Channel.

SHOWTIME® PRESENTS MARGARET CHO: psyCHO
Stand-Up Comedy Event from Emmy® And Grammy® Nominated Comedian Margaret Cho to Premiere
Friday, September 25th At 9 PM ET/PT on SHOWTIME

Come September 25th it will be ChoTime on Showtime - how's that for a titty twister?!

SHOWTIME will debut MARGARET CHO: psyCHO, the latest show from renowned three-time Grammy and Emmy nominated comedian Margaret Cho on September 25th at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Filmed in March at the Gramercy Theater in New York City, Cho returns to the stage in front of a live audience in this provocative and hilarious performance.

Never one to shy away from a difficult or taboo topic, Cho considers nothing off limits. The witty comedian keeps her audience laughing with her notorious observational humor and candid commentary on her personal life. From singlehood to Boko Haram to female empowerment, Cho tackles difficult subjects with sensitivity and razor sharp insight. Part of the show includes touching tributes to her “father in comedy,” Robin Williams and her “mother in comedy,” Joan Rivers. A pioneer in the comedy world, Cho doesn’t take anything for granted in this eclectic stand-up routine.

“The audience at my shows don’t necessarily consider themselves traditional comedy fans,” says Cho. “I seem to be a secure alternative for people who don’t think they’re being represented in society. They come because my point of view satisfies a lot of what needs to be said out there, and that makes me really proud.”

From Clownery Productions Inc. and Levity Productions, MARGARET CHO: psyCHO is executive produced by Margaret Cho, Judi Brown-Marmel, Norman Aladjem, Neil Sheridan, Reg Tigerman, Sarah J. Martin, Stacy Mark and Heidy Vaquerano.

Bo Derek Is A Perfect: Sharknado 3

Bo Derek: Look, Tarzan, It's My Jane
OMG! Imagine my excitement when I found out, Bo Derek was cast as Tara Reid's Mom (I try to refrain from the term "Mother" for many reasons) in Sharknado 3 ! Well if you can't, let me explain.

Bo Derek was a HUGE sex symbol when I grew up. Thus she was my first girl crush, I had a BD poster on my wall, if you don't believe me ask my Mom (again, not Mother).

When I first saw this striking beauty in the late Blake Edwards progressive sexual comedy "10" with the great, and also late Dudley Moore, I was in L-O-V-E!

Oh and BTW I was too young to see the film and saw it on Showtime with a friend behind my parents backs. However they then took myself and my sister to see my most favorite Bo film of all time, Tarzan The Ape Man - campy, awesome, brilliant and it made her and her deceased husband Jon Derek a fortune as they owned the rights.

Hey, Fashion House with her and Morgan Fairchild was pretty awesome too!

Congrats Bo, can't wait!
