Silent Running

In 1968, visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull (The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) contributed to the ground-breaking special photographic effects of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Four years later, he stamped his own indelible mark on the science fiction genre with his mesmerizing directorial debut - Silent Running. In the not-so-distant future, Earth is barren of all flora and fauna, with what remains of the planet's former ecosystems preserved aboard a fleet of greenhouses orbiting in space. When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens, one botanist, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern, The 'Burbs), rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was, accompanied only by the ship's three service robots. Featuring a captivating central performance by Dern, visual effects that rival anything in 2001 and a powerful ecological message, Silent Running is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates even more strongly today than it did at the time of its original release.

Falling For Christmas

I had some time yesterday so I decided to Netflix & Chill and watched the Lindsay Lohan vehicle Falling For Christmas.

Lindsay is back Minions! She doesn't make one false move and wins the audience over with her completely charming and nuanced performance as heiress Sierra Belmont.

To paraphrase what Meryl Streep said about working with her in Prairie Home Companion - she is completely fluid and alive when she is on screen.

Here are a couple of random thoughts I had while viewing it:

Isn't Lindsay's BF in the movie gay? (spoiler alert, turns out he is!)

Hold my beer I want 6 people to dress me every day and feed me caviar

When Lindsay sings along to Jingle Bell Rock in the car, nice homage to Mean Girls

Oh, her hair is so shiny

Cord Overstreet is pretty darned cute, swoon!!!

Lindsay has some bad ass rich girl with amnesia skills when she comes up with a fundraiser for Jake's (Cord) lodge

No happily ever after is complete without a horse drawn carriage

Current Mood

Madonna

 Dear Jessie | Madonna

🎶Pink elephants and lemonade, Dear Jessie hear the laughter running through the love parade🎶

Current Mood = benevolent and nothing says that like a good Madonna song. Madonna was at the peak of her powers (for many years actually) when she recorded Dear Jessie for her amazing album Like A Prayer (my personal fave album by her is Erotica) -

Go grab a lemonade and check out the pink elephant in the room, hey it's a love parade after all!!!

Can't Be Stopped

Hollywood's own "Can't Be Stopped" crew is one of the most influential and recognizable graffiti crews to emerge out of the U.S. is Since its inception in the early 1980's, the initials C.B.S. have been at the forefront of evolving graffiti art into a true, authentic art form. The kinship forged by father figure "Skate" creates a bond of brotherhood, a surrogate family protecting these artists from the temptations of the Hollywood streets, imprinting upon them an unrivaled standard of morality, respect and integrity in graffiti. Skate's tutelage becomes their lore and mantra, the driving force as these boys come of age, many from broken homes, into their ultimate success and prosperity. Unbeknownst to these young artists, they were shaping the medium and ultimately became pioneers. Their notoriety and acclaim was a transcending factor that evolved this contemporary art form, transcending the stigmas attached to this subculture.

Through interviews, the story of Hollywood's "Can't Be Stopped" crew is told. Father figure "Skate" mentors a group of boys, raising them from broken homes and forming a surrogate family. Under his tutelage, these boys come of age as he protects them from the Hollywood streets, mentoring them in standards of morality, respect and integrity in their art. The CBS crew grow in notoriety and acclaim, transcending this contemporary art form, breaking the stigma and stereotypes associated with graffiti.

Hump Day & Chill

Judy Garland & Debbie Reynolds

Well after yesterday's mid-terms I indeed need to Hump Day & Chill with some old Hollywood glamour.

Here we have two legends of the days of yore Judy Garland you know of The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born and Liza Minelli's Mom fame. Along with Debbie Reynolds of Singin' In The Rain, The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Carrie Fisher's Mom fame.

Both of these women were singular and unique talents who brought their own brand of magic to Movie Musicals and other fare. Oddly enough they both had equally famous and talented daughters.

Wonder what their conversation was about, oh to be a fly on that wall!

So let's give these legendary women their due and Hump Day & Chill to how amazing they were...
