Saturday Sinema: The Loveless

With this pedigree "The Loveless" is a Film Buff's dream!
THEY'RE GOING NOWHERE... FAST! The United States, late 1950s. A time of generational conflict, of immense social change, of bold fashions and toe-tapping music - just some of the elements that collide in thrilling fashion in The Loveless, the feature debut of both its star, Willem Dafoe (To Live and Die in LA), and its directors, Monty Montgomery (producer, David Lynch's Wild at Heart) and future Academy Award®-winner* Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark, Detroit). A motorcycle gang roars into a small southern town en route to the Daytona races, unnerving and angering the locals with their standoffish attitude and disrespect for social niceties. When one of their number, the charismatic Vance (Dafoe), hooks up with sportscar-driving Telena (Marin Kanter, Endangered Species), he incurs the wrath of the girl's father, setting the gang on a collision course with the rest of the town as simmering tensions boil over into violent retribution. Raw, angry and honest, The Loveless evokes, with unflinching clarity, both an attitude and a bygone era, exploring the tensions between two very different Americas - now fully restored and presented in high definition for the first time in this feature-packed new edition from Arrow Video! * 2010, Best Director, Best Picture: The Hurt Locker. "ACADEMY AWARD®" is a registered trademark and service mark of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Renowned Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund (Polar) brings his notorious visual aesthetic to the film, alongside ground-breaking performances from Rory Culkin (SuccessionSignsYou Can Count On Me) and Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond the PinesBrooklyn).

Inspired by a true story, Lords Of Chaos made its debut at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival before going on to impress audiences at Fantastic Fest, Beyond Fest, Fantasia Festival, and more...

The Lords of Chaos
Oslo, 1987: Seventeen-year-old Euronymous (Rory Culkin) is determined to escape his idyllic Scandinavian hometown and create "true Norwegian black metal" with his band, MAYHEM. He's joined by equally fanatical youths - Dead (Jack Kilmer) and Varg (Emory Cohen). Believing that they're on the cusp of a musical revolution, the group gets even darker, driven by the black metal dogma to spread evil.

They begin burning down churches throughout the countryside and stealing tombstones for their record store. But when the press catches up with them and Euronymous takes more credit than he's earned for the group's violent acts, Varg, fresh out of jail, arranges a dark encounter to settle the score and ultimately determine who the darkest black metal musician is...

The Blu-ray / DVD combo contains the unrated version of the film (118 min) and bonus features (11 directors teasers and trailers). The single DVD includes the rated version (116 min) and no bonus features.

Film Buff Friday - "Bloodlines"

I was made aware of Vincent via Margaret Cho, fascinating stuff...

"A morbid, fascinating, and remarkably inspiring new documentary about one of the most acclaimed artists of our time." - Metal Injection

Award winning Filmmaker / Author John Borowski's (H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer) fifith feature documentary film, Bloodlines: The Art and Life of Vincent Castiglia, will be released in North America on November 13th. The film focuses on artist Castiglia's painful life of abuse, addiction, and recovery while also exploring the reasons why the world renowned artist paints exclusively in human blood.

Vincent Castiglia paints surreal images exclusively in human blood. He began doing so as form of self-healing following a troubled childhood and painful existence. From darkness, however, came light, and Castiglia's story is one of inspiration and hope, providing proof that art can heal and serve to inspire others.

Margaret Cho, who commissioned Vincent to paint her portrait in her blood, is interviewed in the film as well as celebrities Gregg Allman, Damien Echols, Kerry King and Gary Holt of the heavy metal band Slayer, record executive Michael Alago, and numerous others including filming in the studio and museum of legendary artist H.R. Giger, who designed the iconic creature for the Alien movies.

After a successful Kickstarter fundraising campaign, production of the film spanned from 2014 to 2018, filming on location in the United States: New York City, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Chicago, Oregon, and internationally: Singapore and Switzerland.

Saturday Sinema: The Last House On The Left

The Wes Craven original horror classic with tons of bonus material...Yep, a film buffs dream!!!

MARI, SEVENTEEN, IS DYING. EVEN FOR HER THE WORST IS YET TO COME! The directorial debut of Wes Craven, the man behind such horror favourites as A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes and Scream, The Last House on the Left justly retains its reputation as one of the most harrowing cinematic experiences of all time, nearly half a century on from its original release. On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to the big city to attend a concert by shock-rockers Bloodlust. Attempting to pick up some marijuana on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic and depraved Krug (David Hess). Gagged and bound, the young women are bundled into a car trunk and driven to the woods, where the gang subject them to a terrifying ordeal of sexual humiliation, torture and murder. Unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1972, The Last House on the Left shocked audiences with its graphic and unflinching portrayal of interpersonal violence, paving the way for a whole host of cheap imitators looking to capitalise on its success. It is Wes Craven's original alone, however, that remains one of the true watershed moments in horror (and indeed, film) history.

Film Buff Friday: The Addiction

Being a fan of vampires & Abel Ferrara's work - I remember going to see "The Addiction" at The Nuart in West Los Angeles, CA - I even owned it on video for a spell. Lili Taylor is amazing! The Black and White photography superb. It is one of the most fascinating, horrifying, not to mention challenging additions to the genre. "Yes" that is a recommendation.

The Addiction [Blu-ray] (6/26)

Abel Ferrara and his 1995 take on the bloodsuckers with The Addiction. Philosophy grad student Kathleen (Lili Taylor) is bitten by a vampire and must learn to come to terms with her new lifestyle with now features a frequent craving for human blood. Shot in stunning black and white and on the streets of New York, The Addiction is a raw and shocking vampire film that only Abel Ferrara could make.

You Suck!
