Film Buff Friday: Southland Tales

In 2001, writer/director Richard Kelly achieved cult status with Donnie Darko, an assured debut feature exploring deep existential questions through the lens of 80s nostalgia. Five years later, he followed up with a more ambitious and even more beguiling sophomore effort, in which forces of totalitarianism and anarchism collide against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic, near-future world - the beguiling and baffling Southland Tales. Los Angeles, 2008. As the city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental chaos, the fates of an eclectic set of characters - including an amnesia-stricken action star (Dwayne Johnson, the Fast & Furious series), an adult film star developing her own reality TV project (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cruel Intentions) and a police officer whose identity has split in two (Seann William Scott, TV's Lethal Weapon) - intertwine with each other and with the whole of humanity. A darkly comic futuristic epic that speaks as presciently to our turbulent times as it did to the American socio-political climate in 2006, Southland Tales receives a fresh - and timely - lease of life with this new, director-approved restoration.

"All night, I'll riot with you, I know you got my back and you know I got you, So come on (come on), come on (come on), come on (come on) Let's get physical" - Physical, Dua Lipa

What does Dua Lipa's song Physical have to do with ringing in 2021? I'm not sure if it means anything to you, but for me it does. Hey, it's my column and I'll do what I want to, seriously!

Moving on from 2020 isn't going to be like flipping a light switch, it's going to be more like running a marathon up a hill in San Francisco. Making way for a better future. It's going to be a challenge, but were up for it! Let's hit the Mother F#cking ground running Minions!

Tunesday - Relax

Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Having seen Wonder Woman 1984, like most of you have. I noticed the distinct lack of any music from the year it's set, in the movie. "Yes" none of those great songs from 1984 were included. My guess is because it was thought they would take you out of the film and trigger memories of the song instead.

Well here is a blast from the 1984 past! Although it peaked at a mere 67 on the charts Frankie Goes To Hollywood Relax has become a song that has been used in many films and TV Shows. Most notably Brian DePalma's Body Double, where it was featured appropriately and prominently. Given that the song is about as they put it "shagging."

Seriously though, what song isn't?!

This could have been fun played over the montage where Steve is trying on clothes for Diana IMHO. "No" you say, well come up with a better song idea from 1984, and place it within the context of WW84. I double dog dare ya!

Check out the video for Relax after the jump!

Monday Motivation

The Dynamic Duo
LeAnn Rimes & Brandi Glanville

It's been a spell since I have posted any Monday Motivation, hey, motivation is hard during the Holidays with so many shiny things vying for ones attention. But here I go...

Today's motivation is "Moving On" - honestly I am quite surprised that reality star Brandi Glanville has finally buried the hatchet with singer LeAnn Rimes, but it makes me happy that she finally has.

As you may or may not recall LeAnn had an affair with Brandi's then husband Eddie Cibrian while the two were shooting a the TV Movie Northern Lights. Eddie and LeAnn later married.

Brandi carried on a quite volatile public feud with Rimes for years. But as of recently, not so much.

"Moving On" is a very healing thing and adds way more to your life than ill will. The photo above of the two of them in matching sequin masks is too cool, and should be more than enough to motivate good vibes the last Monday (Yay!) of 2020.

2020 has been rough so pay it forward Minions, and let's build a brighter 2021!

Just Because...Chilling

Chilling
Kiernan Shipka aka Sabrina

Just Because, baby it's cold outside, Just Because we've all been in hibernation and Just Because you've most likely been Netflix and chilling, here's what I binged yesterday season three of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

With the fourth and last season hitting the Netflix que this Thursday the 31st, New Year's Eve 2020, well now I know how I am going to spend NYE fer sure!

Spoilers Ahead: One of the things that I was completely into in season three is that Sabrina, who is Lucifer's daughter is now Queen of Hell. TBH I am quite envious of her, it makes me want to rule Hell, except as a King.

Carrying on, it was interesting how Sabrina's dueling nature, wanting to be a normal teenager and wanting the power that ruling Hell comes with, is "resolved" in the final episode of season three. I am sure it is going to cause plenty off issues and mayhem come this Thursday, I can't wait!

Hitting The Flight Attendant today on HBO Max, that's correct, I'm chilling!

The Morning After...

Tis the morning after Christmas 2020, I bet it isn't what you thought it would be last January 1st. But I'm sure we all made the best of it, right???

Well mine was rather low key as I am sure most of yours were. Breakfast with a friend then I streamed Wonder Woman 1984. What did I think of WW84? Hmmmmmmm...that's a multi-layered question.

The first WW was so bank, this one was not as good (which is usually the case with sequels) but it had it's moments and bigger ideas like it's predecessor. My main issue is it was a pretty disjointed film.

Do I think it's worth seeing? Overall "Yes" - there are many things about the movie that make it still worth your while. Notably Kristen Wiig as Cheetah (except for the crappy CGI they did for her in the action sequences.)

Patty Jenkins, like in the first WW, makes sure there is heart to this epic. That's what ultimately made the original a home run, and saves this one from being a total disaster.

But make no mistake, overall I thought this outing was hit and miss.
