To Infiniti & Beyond

Last night the Oscars happened and honestly it was one of the better telecasts I have seen in recent years.

Although she was not nominated for her role in One Battle After Another Chase Infiniti gets my honor of Best Dressed for the evening.

There is always one look and dress that are perfection to me every year and Chase was it.

Chase's custom lavender Louis Vuitton gown took over 750 hours to construct, yep that's a whole lotta gown Minions!

It was topped off nicely by the choice to wear her hair down rather than up.

While she missed out on a nomination she richly deserved I'm sure will be seeing more of Chase on the Oscar red carpet in the future.

It's Oscar Sunday!

It's Oscar Sunday Minions, anyone place bets on who will win?! I never do that, I tend to flow when I watch them, I'm a no expectations type of viewer.

Although I must confess after Timothee Chalamet handicapped his chances of winning with his ballet and opera comments, he paved the way for who I actually think will win and should win in this category: Michael B Jordan for Sinners.

So if that doesn't happen (I'm 99% sure it will) I would be let down if he actually did lose to the Human Pez Dispenser.

A new album from David J (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets) entitled, Tracks From the Attic Revisited is confirmed for release on May 22 from Independent Project Records (IPR) and will be available in black or gold colored vinyl, CD, and all digital formats and can be pre-saved here. The first single from the album, “If Muzak Be the Junk Food of Love,” will be available April 15 and can be preordered here.

Reshaped, sometimes rewritten, and now reinterpreted with a full band, the ten tracks that make up Tracks From the Attic Revisited are culled from the 37(!)-track home recordings on Tracks From the Attic released in 2024, also from IPR. These new, fully fleshed out versions are an arresting distillation of David J’s eclectic taste which includes late ‘70s New Wave, a lifelong love of classic country music, and Nick Drake-like romanticism.

“The 2024 demos tracks that became Tracks From the Attic were like neglected little seeds that had been set aside, or fallen on fallow land,” said David J. “They’ve since been gathered up, nurtured, tended and brought back to life as little buds for Tracks From the Attic Revisited. Now this is the bloom.” 

When he first went digging through boxes of old tapes, David J didn’t yet know that he was about to embark on a long, fruitful conversation with his own past, present, and even future self. As he uncovered demos recorded over some four decades, he noticed that some songs were asking him to get reacquainted with them. He eventually complied, approaching material that sometimes he had no recollection of having written as when producing another artist’s music.

The old home recordings became new demos for Revisited: ideas reworked and sometimes radically transformed, lyrics adjusted when they showed a potential to narrate life in the not-so-roaring 2020s. Thus reshaped, the songs were shared with a stellar combo that convened in the studio to breathe new life into them. Some are virtually unrecognizable, while some have kept their original form and charm intact – just developed and grown through the experience that comes with years of music making.

Where the original Tracks From the Attic invited listeners to be present in the room as a young singer-songwriter found his own way (wandering in the fields of experimentation and collecting the meanderings that followed), the new album puts us in front of an artist who has honed his craft and mastered the art of pruning. Indeed, David J compares the making of Tracks From the Attic Revisited to the tending of a garden.

Recorded at Ear Gallery Music in Los Angeles and produced by David J, Tracks From the Attic Revisited musicians include David J (vocals, acoustic guitar), Jason Roberts (Spoon, Daniel Johnston) (guitar), Jon Bernstein (piano, organ), Tony Green (bass), David Raven (Steve Earle, Keith Richards, Lucinda Williams, etc.) (drums), Dan Clucas (trumpet), Robert “Smokey” Miles (Bob Dylan) (accordion), John Courage (lap steel) and Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction) (congas).

Known for their unique musical sensibilities and extraordinary artwork & design, Independent Project Records is a favorite of record collectors and music fans alike for their bespoke packaging and attention to detail. Grammy-nominated founder Bruce Licher’s graphic design and his hand-letterpress packaging have been a mainstay in music circles since 1982’s Tragic Figures from Savage Republic. It's Academy Awards Week, in honor of that I am going to give you my picks, not the ones I think will win, for the five main categories wedged in throughout this column. 

Now aren't you happy?! Let's get this party started!!!

Let's start with Best Picture shall we? Let's! This is a tough category for me because One Battle After Another and Sinners are basically neck and neck for me. This being stated my pick is Sinners it was the most original and audacious of the two.

Confidence doesn't come from knowing everything. It comes from being willing to figure it out.

OK, Best Actress since I haven't seen Jessie Buckley's performance in Hamnet, I thought Rose Byrne was phenomenal in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Her performance made me feel the characters actual anxiety.

I love NY but LA makes me cum, that's all you need to know

Woman Crush of the Week - Daryl Hannah for being a warrior and taking control of her narrative after being disrespected by the fictional way she was portrayed in Love Story. 

Best Actor even if Timothee Chalamet didn't fall flat on his face with his comments about opera and ballet going into the Oscar home stretch. My vote would be for Michael B. Jordan for his masterful performance in Sinners.

FYI Even demons think your a dick

Supporting Actress while I loved Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another, Amy Madigan commanded the screen in Weapons. She gave us a whole new breed of villain.

Feeling nostalgic? Well after seeing this photo I am remembering the 80's and how it was a more simple time and definitely more fun than the current state of the world (not to mention how good the music was.)

Here we have Cher, Sandy Dennis, Karen Black and Director Robert Altman on the set of the movie Come Back To The 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. 

It was a filmed version of the stage play they all three appeared together in under Altman's direction on Broadway. 

There was a certain magic about this time period in cinema and this was a true example of independent filmmaking.

I remember liking it immensely, this being stated It's time for me to revisit it as it I haven't seen it since 1982 when it came out.

The Rose

I took this photo of a random rose laying at the side of a pond one day before yoga at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

What's really great about this is the many thoughts, feelings and stories it evokes.
