Celebrating 50! "American Pie"

Grammy-winning Songwriters Hall of Fame member Don McLean celebrates the 50th anniversary of his global hit “American Pie” reaching #1 on the Billboard chart, where it stayed for four weeks! To commemorate the anniversary, McLean has coined his international 50th Anniversary “American Pie” World Tour which will visit multiple destinations in N. America, UK/Europe, and Australia!

American Songwriter discusses the oft-debated meaning of “American Pie” here. And CBS News Radio’s Steve Futterman caught up with McLean recently and shared this story with their listeners.

“I was writing songs and started singing ‘A long, long time ago’ right through ‘til the day the music died… I can still remember how that music used to make me smile…’ on and on right that day - just that whole thing right into the tape recorder. And I said, ‘Man, what is that?? That is so neat.’ I realized I'd captured the thing about Buddy and his death that I'd been feeling all those years in that one piece of music. Then I waited about three months and I figured out what I was gonna do and just wrote the whole thing in about an hour…,” said McLean.

McLean kicks off his international tour next Friday, January 28 at the Blue Note in Hawaii, then takes a midwestern swing with a stop at The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. “American Pie” was birthed from death - ‘The Day The Music Died’ – coined after the fatal flight when pop/rock legends Buddy Holly (“That’ll Be The Day”, “Peggy Sue”), Ritchie Valens (“La Bamba”), J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, Jr. (“Chantilly Lace”) tragically lost their lives in an airplane crash after the concert February 3, 1959. McLean will pay tribute to the legendary trio with his sold-out anniversary concert there on February 3, 2022.

Film Buff Friday: Surf Nazis Must Die

Girlfriend in a Troma...

An earthquake leaves the California coastline in ruins and reduces the beaches to a state of chaos. A group of neo-Nazis led by Adolf (Brenner), the self-proclaimed "Führer of the new beach", takes advantage of the resulting chaos by fighting off several rival surfer gangs to seize control of the beaches. Meanwhile, an African American oil well worker named Leroy (Harden) is killed by the surf Nazis while jogging on the beach. Leroy's mother, "Mama" Washington (Neely), devastated by the loss of her son, vows revenge. After arming herself with a handgun and grenades, she breaks out of her retirement home and exacts vengeance on the Surf Nazis.

Hump Day & Chill

Put On Your Best Sunday Hat...
Jennifer Tilly

"I am under no obligation to make sense of you" Mad Hatter, Alice in Wonderland

"Yes" Minions today we are going to Hump Day & Chill to Jennifer Tilly's hat. Thus you have no obligation to make sense of it or me. I'm simply in love with Jennifer's love of hats. Get over it.

Jennifer's top hat is so "very" that I just had to share the hat love with you all.

"You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are" Mad Hatter, Alice in Wonderland

OMG! More haberdashery from yours truly. I think I've gone mad as a hatter, hat crazy, talk to the hat, born to hat jive.

Before I become more of an ass-hat let's just tip our brims and Hump Day & Chill by putting on the Ritz fantastic shall we? We shall!

This HD & C was brought to by sheer lunacy, I now need to brand a hat with that moniker!

Leave your hat on with Jennifer at -

Cool Breeze

A Wise Tumbleweed Once Said...
Keanu Reeves & SpongeBob

For some funky reason I am feeling like a "cool breeze" in summer today. Not of the winter variety we are having at present.

To me nothing says that like Keanu Reeves as a wise tumbleweed named Sage in SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Not to mention that the literal translation of Mr. Reeves first name is Hawaiian for, well, "cool breeze," naturally.

"Yes" Minions Keanu's destiny as one of the coolest human beings to walk the planet was ordained from birth.

So how does that make you feel? Personally it makes me feel one with the vibe.

Just go with it!

Gonna Tell My Nieces & Nephews This Was Fleetwood Mac

Flamingo Road
Christina Raines, Howard Duff, Morgan Fairchild &
Mark Harmon

You've all seen them online people posting fun images saying they are going to tell the upcoming generation that they are someone other than they are. The thing about this is while it is amusing and often times funny it is also kind of an unfortunate commentary on how the Internet can pervert and twist the truth.

We've seen what that can do, politics anyone? Yeah, I thought not.

Which brings me to what this really is a nifty prime time soap called Flamingo Road that ran two years from 1980 - 1982.

Here's the 411: Based on the novel and 1949 film of the same name, this prime-time soap detailed the lives of haves and have-nots in the sleepy Southern hamlet Truro, Florida. The haves live in huge mansions on Flamingo Road, while the rest of the characters did anything (blackmail, murder, voodoo) to obtain that address as well.

The drama won over critics, but never got enough of an audience to stay on the air. Too bad, it's a personal favorite of mine and should have ran for at least the requisite five seasons so I and the others who loved it could still see it in syndication.

C'est La Vie!

PS despite certain misgivings about doing so, I'm still telling my Nieces & Nephews this was Fleetwood Mac. I like to have fun and know they are intelligent enough to discern fact from fiction.

Mic Drop!
