Hello October...

Alfred Hitchcock's
Psycho

I love the Fall and I especially love October as it is Spooky Season all month long! "Yes" this is truly the most wonderful time of the year (if you know, you know.)

Thus welcome October 1st, that makes it a mere 30 days until Halloween...Boo!!!

I am commemorating the first day of October 2022 with a montage of images from one of my favorite horror classics of all time Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

This is a film I watch every year to celebrate the macabre and never tire of, I've definitely seen it South of twenty times.

What's that you ask? No I'm not going to get into why I will leave that up to more capable hands. The Minions behind Wikipedia, naturally...

Gird your loins and let's have some scary fun this month!!!

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things

"Weird"

—Leonard Maltin, Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide

The SET-UP: Five young kinky actors and their artistic director come to a desolate and nearly forgotten burial island, complete with a morbid history of MURDER, RAPE, CURSES and DEMONS. Alan (Alan Ormsby), the brilliant but bizarre Director of the company, has brought them to this foreboding place to dabble in witchcraft; specifically to dig up a fresh corpse and use it in a ritual ceremony which is supposed to raise the dead from their graves. The PAY-OFF: It seems as though Alan has really gathered his "children" here, only to play a practical joke on them and then to party the rest of the night away. However, the joke's on Alan. His bizarre ritual ceremony really does raise the dead from their graves...only they're in no mood to party! NOTE: "BENJAMIN" CLARK is really "BOB" CLARK, the creative director behind the hit films PORKY'S, BLACK CHRISTMAS and A CHRISTMAS STORY among others. ALAN ORMSBY, though he turned in what has been described as "...one of the most obnoxious screen performances in history!", has actually made a mark for himself as the screenwriter for such memorable films as MY BODYGUARD, CAT PEOPLE, KARATE KID 3 and PORKY'S 2.

Michael's Musings

Hocus Pocus My Ass
Michael Shinafelt

So Hocus Pocus 2 drops tomorrow, the sequel to Hocus Pocus a movie that people have been pretending is actually good for 29 years.

As Madonna would say "Express Yourself, don't Repress Yourself" therefore bear witness to me expressing myself without repression of my true feelings about Hocus Pocus. Did I strike a nerve? I hope so!

I'd say there's a special place in Hell for Lisa Rinna, but Purgatory is worse (also she'd most likely thrive in Hell) Thus there is special place for her there!!!

A whacky way out world of witches sounds perfectly groovy right here, right now

Hump Day & Chill

9 1/2 Weeks
Kim Basinger

For a few reasons Kima Basinger has been on my mind of late. Remember her? She was a HUGE star in the eighties and nineties. She had beauty and talent. Trust moi she was more than just a pretty face and has an Oscar for her portrayal of Lynn Bracken in LA Confidential to prove it.

Thus we are gonna Hump Day & Chill to Ms. Basinger, because it's my blog and I'll do what I want to, so there!

I follow Kim on Instagram and she recently liked a comment of mine regarding her work with Jeff Bridges in a terrific little film called The Door In The Floor (bear witness to it, I posted it here.)

Guessing you could say I am a fan. It got me thinking about seeing 9 1/2 Weeks which at the time was notorious because it dared to portray a masochistic love story. She was riveting as Elizabeth opposite Mickey Rourke's John.

Kim took risks. She was never demure in her choices. She is the poster person for "Go Big Or Go Home" - I miss her presence in films.

Fun Fact: She's the only reason I attempted to watch Fifty Shades Darker. If she had been the main attraction I could have actually endured it.

So let's give a Hump Day & Chill toast to Kim, shall we? You'd better believe it!

It's Niecy Time

Stellar!
Niecy Nash

I am three episodes deep into Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and I can state with 100% certainty that Niecy Nash is going to take home the Emmy for her amazing portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer's neighbor Glenda Cleveland.

Many of the superlatives used in the reviews of her work on the show contain the word "terrific" and that word perfectly describes her work in it.

The first real exposure I had to Niecy was on Ryan Murphy's Scream Queens. She was one of the bright spots in what was otherwise a meh show. Then there was Claws where she literally chewed the scenery as rising Queenpin Desna Simms.

Her accomplished body of work speaks for itself, quite loudly I might add.

Come next Emmy Awards it's gonna be: Niecy Time!!!

Dancing On Tables

Scottish band Dancing On Tables have released "So What" the second single off their upcoming debut album 'Colour In The Grey,' out October 14 on Enci Records (Fences, Kulick, The Joy Formidable).

Named as one of Variety Magazine's ''10 Brits To Watch,'' the band's profile continues to rise with stints on Catfish and The Bottlemen's arena tour in 2021, numerous festival appearances, placements in ad campaigns for Schuh x Adidas and Scottish Water, and inclusion on major playlists, such as New Music Friday, The Pop List and Breaking Alternative.

Stream "So What" here: https://orcd.co/dotsowhat

Watch the “So What” music video here: https://youtu.be/rL0W5Bfn_Wc

’So What’ takes raw and delicate lyrics about the realisation that you would do anything to get an old relationship back, reliving all the mistakes you made and the games that plays with your head, and pairs them with anthemic rock."

The contrast between the intimate lyrics and heavy sound act as a way to show how, in a world where it feels like it’s not normal for men to talk honestly about their feelings, people find ways to hide what they really want to say. ‘So What’ acts as a mask, allowing someone to say things deep from the heart that they wouldn’t otherwise feel comfortable saying in a different scenario.

Of their upcoming debut full-length, the band says, "It feels like the last 3 years of our life have all been building up to this album. You can hear the journey that we’ve been on as a group as you go through the tracks, with stories of love, happiness, loss and frustration sang on top of a sound that we have worked hard to define by combining our original rock influences with our favourite modern music alt-pop styles.

The album is a collection of songs that were put together over a time where as musicians, we were suddenly stuck at home after being used to being on the road for most of the year. Like most people, it was tough for us to stay motivated during this, but working together (remotely) on music was the highlight of each day and left us with over 70 tracks to choose from for this album.

For us, writing and recording this album really was the 'colour in the grey' of every day life at this point."

Only 36 More Days...

Well Minions it's only 36 more days until Halloween and 18 more days until the saga between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode comes to it's conclusion with Halloween Ends, on October 14th to be exact.

I can't wait for both!!! "Yes" I am a big horror person and a HUGE fan of the original 1978 Halloween.

The tagline for this teaser poster to Kills is a favorite of mine "Fear Makes Monsters."

It really sums up a lot of what Michael Myers is, and why his popularity endures. He is a cypher that we know nothing about, thus all of our doubts and anxiety can be easily projected on to him. It is precisely those things that have made Michael one of the all time great horror icons, we truly fear him.

So gird your loins, and break out the butcher knife! Halloween 2022 is going to be one for the books!
