Film Buff Friday: Sixteen Candles

They don't make em' like this anymore...

In his debut film as writer-director, John Hughes immediately cemented himself as the king of teen cinema with Sixteen Candles, and in the process also introduced one of the most iconic faces of '80s Americana: Molly Ringwald. For high schooler Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald), her 16th birthday might be the worst day of her life. Her entire family has forgotten about it due to her older sister's impending wedding; her biggest crush, high school hunk Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) has discovered an embarrassing "sex quiz" filled out by Sam in which she details how she is saving herself for him; and to make matters worse, she is hounded by a relentless nerd (Anthony Michael Hall) who won't take no for an answer. But Sam's sweet sixteen isn't over yet, and before the end of the night, all her birthday wishes could still come true... Taking the rude and crude humor of the teen sex comedies that came before it and placing it within the intimately portrayed perspective of a girl's mid-teenage-life crisis, Sixteen Candles is a bombshell of 80s pop culture that continues to be debated and beloved over three decades after its release.

Michael's Musings

Seeing Red
Michael Shinafelt
Cuomo shows up and it's like “Ooooh, Daddy's here.” Newsome shows up and it's like “Ooooh, likable step-dad is here.”Trump shows up and it's like “Ooooh, racist grandpa took out his dick at the bus stop.” - John Fugelsang

Yeah, I wished I could take credit for this gem, but I acquiesce to comedian John Fugelsang. I follow Mr. Fugelsang on Twitter. Oddly getting my Tweet on has been a quite cathartic outlet for me during these trying times. It's the arena where I get truly politic and where brilliant minds like Fugelsang remind me not everyone is a MAGA Zombie Apocalypse wanna be. Moving on up, down and perpendicular...

Post quarantine will the producers of My 600 Pound Life find me? Or do I need to call them? How does this work???

BTW - how's your quarantine going? I actually took a nap yesterday to stop eating...

Vanderpump Rules is totally dreck this season

In these tough times there we can always count on the Taylor Swift/Kanye West/Kim Kardashian menage. They'll be there for you.

Raspberry Sherbet - that's all

My favorite refrain of late? "Where's the pizza???"

Stop getting creative with hard boiled eggs, I implore you!!!

Just Say: Le Woof

Woman Crush of the Week - Sia because I want to swing from the chandelier, damn it

You put your right foot in, you rock out with your c#ck out. Now THAT's the hokey pokey!!!

Doesn't it feel a lot better?

Fingers crossed Halloween Kills, the follow up to 2018's Halloween doesn't get lost in the shuffle due to the age of Corona. Hey, I have my priorities in tact.

When you are a gay man with the last name of Rimmer (true story)

Do you hear what I hear? Do you? Answer me! Whatever...

Hump Day & Chill

Bottoms Up!
Patsy Stone
(Joanna Lumley)
Quarantine, quarantine, quarantine that's all I ever hear, and with good reason. Of course along with this comes the usual plethora of catch phrases. Being as today is all about having a Hump Day & Chill, let's focus on the word Quarantini shall we? We shall!!!

Thus I have chosen the official Quarantini poster imbiber straight outta Absolutely Fabulous, Patsy Stone! Patsy, portrayed by actress Joanna Lumley could drink your Quarantini ass under the table. She could take the "Chill" in Hump Day & Chill to a whole other dimension, that's fer sure.

While I suggest you try to remain in this dimension, might I say enjoy your down time while you can, by partaking in your favorite adult beverage. Hey, it doesn't all have to be Quarantini's and olives. Personally my favorite thing is wine when I kick it. Chardonnay & Cabernet Sauvignon to be specific, and I just was.

Thus I hereby decree that today you Hump Day & Chill like Patsy Stone. That is all, WTF are you waiting for?! Hit the bottle & "Chill!"

"American Nightmare"

Justin Utley

Talk about perfect timing...

“American Nightmare” is Justin Utley’s first single release since his activism work in Utah helped to ban conversion therapy, the discredited practice that aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender expression, in the state. “The win was not only cathartic but rewarding and empowering,” he says. Utah is now the 19th state to ban conversion therapy. Utley plans to take his fight to the other 31 states. “I’ll take my guitar wherever I need to in order to keep this conversation going and get this horrific, shame-based sham of therapy banned. It’s unethical, it’s disproven, and yet so many are caught in its web of lies, inevitable failure, and suicide.” He blames the lawmakers who blindly follow their party lines and church leaders instead of the will of the constituents who elected them. It’s one of the reasons he chose to shoot the music video for “American Nightmare” in a church (incidentally, the same church used for the Touched by An Angel series) and includes scenes with crowds in blindfolds, unable and unwilling to see the disasters that lie ahead.

Catch the video after the jump!
