Are You A "Crate Digger?"

Crate Digger: An Obsession With Punk Records
by Bob Suren

Available on June 9th - Trade Paperback, 192 Pages - $14.95

An insider's account of the last 30 years of punk rock and vinyl records,
including new information on many punk luminaries.

Oh how fondly I remember "crate digging" - it was so much fun, I would go to the Tower Records once a week and find out what new vinyl I could buy, punk included. Yes, I was and still am a Punk Rocker!!!

Bob Suren spent more than 30 years immersed in punk rock. His obsession with punk music, culture, and especially record collecting began with a loaned mix tape in a small town in Florida when he was a teenager and slowly took over all aspects of his life.

He started a record label and distribution company, opened a record store, managed a thriving bootleg merchandise empire, published a magazine, promoted shows, and traveled the world with his own band. He mentored generations of younger punks and built a movement that put Florida on the map. He stayed a step ahead of all the ups and downs of the music industry, always pioneering.

Join Bob as he hangs out with punk luminaries like Jello Biafra, The Meatmen, Raw Power, Black Flag, The Dead Boys, Millions of Dead Cops, Rattus, and more. He relates his (mis)adventures breaking his curfew to see the Dead Boys' last show, almost getting arrested after seeing the Ramones, touring with his bands in Egypt, Ecuador, Brazil, and more.

As Jeff Nelson of Minor Threat said, "Really brings to life the early days of the American punk scene as it spread slowly across the country, through turntables, fanzines, and word of mouth. His vivid vinyl recollections illustrate how good record stores and adventurous college radio stations were so essential in bringing startling new music into the lives of many previously isolated kids. It follows the trajectory of a kid-turned-concert-promoter as his passion for music became all-consuming."

Then one day it all fell apart. He'd built up his life like a record collection, but it didn't satisfy him anymore. He sold everything, dropped out, moved far from home to start fresh... and wrote this book.

Crate Digger is written in short spurts tied to actual records. The result is real, heartfelt, and deeply informed by the music of the last thirty years. It's a basic piece of your punk history collection.

"Bob Suren delivers some great punk rawk history through anecdote and wit, intermingled with personal stories of love, loss, the characters that have come and gone and that elusive hunk of vinyl that's just around the next corner.... All spanning 30 years of Bob's life."
- Ami Lawless, Voetsek

"More than just your typical "record guide," Crate Digger allows us to accompany Bob on his passionate 30+ year punk rock journey. The anecdotal approach reminds us that, for the passionate music fan, there's a personal connection to a particular record that often conjures up various memories, both good and bad."
- Al Quint, Suburban Voice magazine and Sonic Overload Radio.

Mama Maria Approves of Miley & Patrick

Too Much Cuteness!
It's Friday the 13th, T.G.I.F. and all that jazz. Love is in the air it seems that Miley Cyrus and Patrick Schwarzenegger are getting very serious.

Patrick's sister Katherine stated to Extra"I think they're adorable," so do I Katherine "If my brother's happy, I'm happy and that's all that matters to me. You just want your sibling to be happy, if they're with someone who makes them happy and in a happy healthy relationship then I'm happy."

Most importantly Mama Maria Shriver, a woman who I respect for many reasons really thinks Ms. Cyrus is a terrific girl and approves of the deepening bond between Miley and her son.

Now THAT is a seal of approval! You go you two!

OMG! They're Naked! Chelsea Handler & Nick Offerman

Extra, extra! "Women & Men: An Issue About Our Current Difficulties" that's what the current issue of Esquire proclaims to be all about. Yes, the mag stakes claim that the entire issue is "devoted entirely to how men and women interact." Men & Women interacting, oh my the drama.

While we are all quite accustomed to viewing Handler's ample and beautiful breasts, we are not nearly as used to seeing her derriere.

The usually clothed Offerman, who is one of the stars of Parks and Recreation is no stranger to flashing his junk. He bared everything in 2014 on Deadwood. That being stated he is not someone we see doing this on a regular basis.

"I love performing -- and I'm not an exhibitionist, I'm not a Kardashian, by any stretch. And I'm not built in the way that people regularly ask me to bare myself," he told Flavorwire of stripping down on camera. "But when things call for it, I've done it on stage, I've done it on screen...I enjoy the beauty of nature."

Bounce those hot booty's you two!

TBT: Pretty Little Liars "A is for Answers"

Everybody Run, Hanna Marin Has A Gun!
With only one more episode to go until the Big "A" reveal it's time for another Throwback Thursday Pretty Little Liars post.

This still is from Season 4 Episode 24 bearing the title "A is for Answers."

I'm really not sure if anything got answered in this one, but I have always wondered why Hanna never shot "A" and how she learned to brandish a gun like that.

Yes, I find Hanna's behavior, especially of late highly suspicious. She has gotten real tough and edgy behind bars and does not seem all that phased by any of it.

My niece Shauna Waters agrees. She doesn't want the big "A" to turn out to be Hanna because she loves the character so much. Me I personally would love it to be her, it would take the show to a whole new level of entertaining.

What's that you say? Oh, yeah Hanna's in jail and they keep showing a shadowy figure at the end of each episode doing sinister things. Well they did introduce a character who goes by the name of Varjack, who is not necessarily "A," perhaps it is them we see, hmmmmmmmm?

Just a thought.

Shauna and myself are probably wrong about Hanna, but honestly isn't her behavior getting less flighty and more calculated? Just sayin'.

Kerry Washington "Don't Cry For Me Lena Dunham"

Two Wild & Crazy Women: Lena Dunham & Kerry Washington
This is a follow-up to the fact that Girls star Lena Dunham landed her dream job as a guest star on the hit show Scandal.
"I started to cry when I saw the actual OPA set," she says.

Oh girl, please don't cry. Do I need to send you a floral arrangement? Kidding my dear, I love it when celebrities let their geek flag fly! It is so endearing.

So here is the 411 on Lena's episode. She plays a woman whose name is Kinky Sue, the name is so catchy there should be a song sung by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga called The Ballad of Kinky Sue.

What's the title of the episode? Well it certainly isn't called Where's The Black Lady, no, it's called It's Good To Be Kink.

Cheers to you Kinky Sue!

Kevin "Renegade" Olusola

Cellist, beatboxer, producer, Grammy winner and one fifth of Pentatonix. That is how most of you know Kevin "KO" Olusola

Perhaps you didn't know he is also a Renegade. Yes, Kevin's first EP Renegade is out tomorrow, March 10th.

Less than an hour after the EP surfaced on iTunes, The Renegade EP, which features Olusola’s world famous celloboxing (simultaneously playing cello and beatboxing), landed at #1 on the Classical Album Chart.  Simultaneously, his rendition of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” shot to #1 on the Classical Singles Chart, with a companion music video, which "KO" premiered on YouTube in conjunction with it.

MS: Rumor has it you have a new EP coming out?

KO: Oh my god, I am ecstatic, I am beside myself! I can't believe it is real and it's happening. It's very exciting!

MS: What prompted you to do Renegade?

KO: I feel that I've gained a lot of skills now that I have been in Pentatonix a while for inspiration. I wanted to put something out that was a cohesive sound of all those experiences that I can elaborate on.

MS: So, how does it feel to be a Grammy Award Winner?

KO: It's amazing and surreal. When I say "Oh yeah we won a Grammy" that doesn't come out of most people's mouths. To know that I can say that is very humbling.

MS: Very few people have one, it's really cool.

KO: Exactly!

Renegade!

MS: On your EP, this may or may not sound weird to you. Probably not, when you played Sam Smith's Stay With Me, I heard singing even though there wasn't any.

KO: Wow! You understand it. That is the sound I am going for! The people who I have admired as instrumentalists are people like Santana. He was a singer first and his medium for that voice was his instrument. So that's why when people say that the cello is the instrument that is the closest to the human voice, I had to take it that step further. How do I actually reproduce this sound so people can actually hear a voice and say "Wow!" I tried to create a sound around it. I'm so happy you said that, that means a lot to me, Thank You.

MS: BTW I remember you playing Renegade at The Orpheum in Los Angeles, CA.

KO: Oh yeah, absolutely!

MS: You always get a solo at a Pentatonix concert which is nice.

KO: Thank you, I appreciate it. It took me so long to put all of the elements together so when I was offered the solo I thought why not just go for it!

MS: Curious people want to know. What made you want to cover Heart Attack by Demi Lovato?

KO: It had an edgy quality to it...electronic, tech, hardcore, which I love! What attracted me to it was I did not think people could ever think the piece could be done with the cello and the beatboxing. So I took it and said: "Let me try it."

                                                           "Stay With Me"

MS: You have created an original music category: Celloboxing.

KO: No one else is Celloboxing, sure why not, let's do it. (laughs)

MS: You've also played Carnegie Hall as well.

KO: Oh yeah. I did it on two different occasions one was my senior year in High School as a cellist, a solo. Then I did it in my first year of college on saxophone. Two different experiences at Carnegie Hall. I feel very honored that I have had that opportunity.

MS: How does it feel to be on the classical music charts?

KO: It's so weird to contemplate that people are actually going out and buying the music that I'm creating. I'm overwhelmed.

MS: You're like Lindsey Stirling she is a Rock Star on the violin, you are a Rock Star on the cello.

KO: Oh thank you! I appreciate that! When you think about it now this alternative sound is popularized and now has wide mass appeal. Lindsey is amazing, she really paved the way for it an created it, in how she presented what she did. There are so many ways to be heard now, it's amazing!

MS: How did you discover your inner Beatboxer?

KO: It wasn't anything that I thought of. I just kind of did it when I was young. It was this song by Musiq Soulchild called Juslisten and it had this hook at the very beginning of the song, that inspired me, that's when I started Beatboxing a lot more.
