Saturday Sinema: One Missed Call Trilogy

One Missed Call
An iconic trilogy of J-horror films comes to Blu-ray for the first time! Tapping into the same brand of terror as the Ring and Grudge movies, visionary director Takashi Miike (Audition, Blade of the Immortal) presents a modern, high-tech twist on that mainstay of Japanese folklore, the yurei or vengeful spirit, in the form of its own iconic antihero - the terrifying Mimiko. In the first installment in the trilogy, 2003's One Missed Call, student Yoko (Anna Nagata, Battle Royale) receives a phone message from her future self, ending with her own death scream. Two days later, she dies in a horrific rail collision. As the mysterious phone curse spreads, claiming more young lives, Yoko's friend Yumi (Ko Shibasaki, Battle Royale, 47 Ronin) joins forces with detective Hiroshi (Shinichi Tsutsumi, Space Battleship Yamato), whose sister met the same gruesome fate. But can they unravel the mystery before the clock runs out on the next victim - Yumi herself? Mimiko's curse continues to wreak bloody havoc in two sequels - 2005's One Missed Call 2 and 2006's One Missed Call: Final, in addition to spawning a TV series and an American remake. This lavish collection from Arrow Video gathers together the original trilogy and a swathe of in-depth bonus features for the ultimate spine-tingling experience.

"Vanity" Thy Name Is Woman

Beautiful
Vanity

Denise Matthews best known as Vanity has passed away at 57. While most people know her as the Prince protege who fronted the grrrrrrrl group Vanity 6, I most fondly remember her as a charismatic presence on the silver screen.

"Yes" I would see movies because Vanity was in them. Why else would I have checked out The Last Dragon & Action Jackson?! 52 Pick-Up had other reasons to see it, but Vanity was still one of them.

It's a shame that she had moved on from Prince before Purple Rain as she was the intended star of it. Instead we got stuck with Apollonia. While PR is a good film, I am sure Vanity would have made it much better.

While the cause of her death has yet to be revealed suffice it to say Denise was not of good health in her latter years.

The nice thing about stars when they pass away is while their physical energy will be missed, their spirit lives on through the work they left behind.

I will be checking out 52 Pick-Up again this weekend.

"Hello" I Win!

Adele: Watch Your Back Taylor Swift!
Yes, you heard correctly, our Lady Of Adele kicked Taylor Swift's skinny white girl booty! Her video for her single Hello which made it's debut Friday and has earned her, what else? Rave Reviews and got the most views of any video in a 24 hour period. Thus dethroning Swift's previous title holder Bad Blood.

Total Views in a 24 hour period:

Bad Blood: 20.1 million

Hello: 27.7 million

Wow! I must admit I am somewhat biased when it comes to this, because I honestly have never watched the video for Bad Blood, no, really, I haven't. However I did pounce on Adele singing Hello  and watched it the minute it surfaced.

Nothing against Taylor she simply isn't my thing, Adele on the other hand...well I'm pretty sure you figured out what team I am on at this point.

Hope there is no Bad Blood over this, wait, I take that back. In the spirit (pun intended) of the season bring it!

Four more days 'till Halloween, Silver Shamrock....

Dr. Nina's Tips On How To Treat Yourself For Halloween

It's Dr. Nina
Dr. Nina Savelle-Rocklin, Psy.D. aka Dr. Nina has made a house call to Entertain Me a couple of times before.

Nina specializes in eating disorders by digging to the root of where the problem lies. She encourages people to Win The Diet War by finding the real issue at hand. Last year I had her dole out her wisdom about how to navigate what I like to call "The Eating Season," you know that time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve.

This year I got to thinking that no one ever really addresses Halloween. So I paged Dr. Nina and asked her if she would be willing to take on my favorite day of the year with her usual flair in the spirit of the season.

I promise this is not a trick, Dr. Nina is here with some awesome tips on how to treat yourself for Halloween!

1.  Afraid of the dark?  The scariest thoughts are the dark ideas you have about yourself.  Keep out thoughts like, "I suck" or "I'm too fat/stupid/ugly" or "Who would love me?"    Those thoughts just make you feel terrible about yourself.  And that's truly frightening.

Boo!
2.  Got ghosts?  If the ghosts of the past are haunting you, it's time to deal with them.  If you had a critical parent, teacher or sibling, and you find yourself being equally critical to yourself, that critical voice belongs to others, not to you.  Find your authentic voice, and view yourself as you are, not as others treated you.

3.  Give yourself a treat.  If you find yourself saying, "I'm going to be good this Halloween and not eat a single piece of candy," or "I was so bad because I ate that pumpkin cheesecake," then you're connecting your character to what you eat.  Allow yourself to eat candy on Halloween without feeling guilty.  Deprivation or anticipation of deprivation leads to overeating.   If you give yourself permission to have candy you may actually eat less!

"Just Say No"
4.  Living a zombie life?  Do you feel as if you're the walking dead, doing the same thing day after day, not truly enjoying your life to the fullest?  If so, bring yourself back to life.  Think about one thing that you've been waiting to do "one day" and make today the day you start working towards doing that thing.  If you want to run a marathon, go for a walk or a short run.  If you want to start dating, go online and check out some dating sites.

5.  Be playful.  Remember the fun of going out with your friends on Halloween?  This occasion is about being with other people, dressing up, and having fun.  So, have a great time.  Happy Halloween!!
