TBT: Truth Or Dare

Truth Or Dare Turns 25!
Madonna
Released in 1991 Madonna's Truth or Dare caused quite the ruckus. It was made up of concert footage and captured what went on behind the scenes during her Blonde Ambition Tour.

The ruckus part? The behind the scenes footage of course! It featured all sorts of taboo content that was not really in the forefront of mainstream media consciousness at the time. Such as boy on boy action, frank discussions about sex and disclosures about ones love life...OK, it addressed sex in an open and provocative manner, which managed to cause a media frenzy surrounding it.

I loved it, and found it not only a brilliant piece of filmmaking, but also marketing. There had been nothing like it at the time and it was a liberating experience for this Madonna fan when he saw it at the theater two times before it hit video.

Cut to 25 years later. It had an anniversary screening for 400 fans at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, where Madonna made a surprise appearance much to her fan's delight!

Also on hand was the films director, Alek Keshishian

Does it hold up today you ask? I have seen the film not too long ago, while it is still entertaining the shock value it once had has faded and become the norm for our chaotic society. It is a film of place and time and it is an important piece of pop culture whose influence vividly has it's fingerprints all over what's going on in entertainment today.

Throwback Thursday indeed.

Knock, Knock, Knockin' On Satan's Door

Love That Satan!

"An electrifying descent into '80s-era cultural terror."
- Mike McPadden, author of Heavy Metal Movies

In the 1980s, it seemed impossible to escape Satan's supposed influence. Everywhere you turned, there were warnings about a widespread evil conspiracy to indoctrinate the vulnerable through the media they consumed. This percolating cultural hysteria, now known as the "Satanic Panic," not only sought to convince us of devils lurking behind the dials of our TVs and radios and the hellfire that awaited on book and video store shelves, it also created its own fascinating cultural legacy of Satan-battling VHS tapes, audio cassettes and literature.

Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s offers an in-depth exploration of how a controversial culture war played out during the decade, from the publication of the memoir Michelle Remembers in 1980 to the end of the McMartin "Satanic Ritual Abuse" Trial in 1990.

Satanic Panic features new essays and interviews by 20 writers who address the ways the widespread fear of a Satanic conspiracy was both illuminated and propagated through almost every pop culture pathway in the 1980s, from heavy metal music to Dungeons & Dragons role playing games, Christian comics, direct-to-VHS scare films, pulp paperbacks, Saturday morning cartoons, TV talk shows and even home computers. The book also features case studies on Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth and Long Island "acid king" killer Ricky Kasso. From con artists to pranksters and moralists to martyrs, the book captures the untold story of how the Satanic Panic was fought on the pop culture frontlines and the serious consequences it had for many involved.

"An often hilarious, sometimes terrifying view into the damage that can be caused when belief outweighs reason." - Daniel XIII, Famous Monsters of Filmland

Oops, Halle Berry Did It Again!

It's Not The First Time
Halle Berry
In some of her best work, Halle Berry does a dramatic reading on the level of Shakespeare of Britney Spears' first hit song, Oops I Did It Again for W Magazine.

Hilarious! No word on what Brit Brit's take is on it yet, but how could you not love this unexpected, who the Hell came up with this off the cuff idea, silliness?!

FYI - to all you Britney fans like Halle. Britney is helping to provide aid to the victims of the flood in her home state of Louisiana by offering a meet and greet for one lucky fan who donates.

Since Berry is obviously a fan I'm sure she has already given.

Reading Oops I Did It Again, drum roll please..... Halle Berry!

Selfie Snap: Zoe Saldana

Selfie, No Stick
Zoe Saldana & Fan

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...ooooops! Wrong movie and it was only yesterday in Bejing, China when the Star Trek Beyond press conference happened.

Much to a fans delight Zoe Saldana who plays Lieutenant Uhura was on deck to snap a selfie with him.

Why am I running this pic? Because it made me smile, and we all need to smile more in a world of election coverage overkill.

So buck up and grin, it's Monday, have a most excellent week!

Back To "Earth" - David Bowie

"You're face to face with the man who fell to earth"

It's really no secret I am a huge David Bowie fan, I mean fuck, he was my first concert ever! Well guess what's happening now? The Man Who Fell To Earth is turning the big 4-0 and getting a restoration...!!!

For those of you out of the loop it's a cult/indie/critically acclaimed piece of art in which Bowie portrays an alien on earth, thus it's title.

Because of Bowie I became a Nicolas Roeg fan. This film was unlike anything I had ever seen before, I can't even begin to describe all of my reactions to it in a few words, but as an impressionable fan of cinema and David Bowie, the passion I feel for this production is to the moon and back.

Of special interest to fans of Ziggy Stardust, the 40th Anniversary of the Sci-Fi opus will see the release of the soundtrack for the very first time, like a virgin.

The Man Who Fell to Earth arrives in theaters on September 9 and will be released on DVD/blu-ray on October 24.

Watch the trailer after the jump!

Sutherland will also be on the cover of upcoming cover issues of Guitar Aficionado and Goldmine Magazine.

Reviewers are applauding Sutherland’s vocals, guitar licks and songwriting style:

“Kiefer Sutherland...slows down and unwinds on his debut album, a collection of 11 rough-edged country songs…The album has an unexpected, unvarnished authenticity that is pleasant, if sometimes familiar.”
-Jill Lawless, Associated Press

“Kiefer Sutherland’s new album DOWN IN A HOLE casts the popular actor in the role of talented songwriter/musician, something as unexpected as a 24 plot twist. His voice and original material are strong, begging the question, “Kiefer, what took you so long?”
-Mike Ragogna, Huffington Post

“Highlighted by his gravelly, whiskey-soaked growl, 49-year-old Kiefer Sutherland’s debut set of electric guitar–enhanced Southern rockers and smoky barroom ballads fares better than most other actors’ first releases.”
-Ian Drew, US Weekly

“The perfect soundtrack for your Americana, dive bar road trip, “All She Wrote” starts off with an intro that would sound right at home during the duel scene in a modern western. Sutherland’s gritty vocals overlap electric guitar and crashing drums…”
-Kat Harlton, Lithium Magazine

“This record is the closest thing I’ve ever had to a journal or diary. All of these songs are pulled from my own personal experiences. As much as I have enjoyed the writing and recording process, I am experiencing great joy now being able to play these songs to a live audience, which was something I hadn’t counted on,” Sutherland said of DOWN IN A HOLE.

Sutherland recently wrapped up a North American tour where he sold out venues across the U.S. and Canada. Additional dates for this fall will be announced soon.
