All Hands On The Decks

Give a Beat Launches

“All Hands on the Decks”

Fundraising + Advocacy Campaign for New Reentry Program

September 10 - October 10

And to Encourage Critical Voting in Upcoming Election

Rooted in the electronic music community, Give a Beat launches “All Hands on the Decks” fundraising and advocacy campaign on September 10th to raise funds for their pilot “On a New Track” post-incarceration reentry mentoring program and to encourage critical voting in the upcoming election. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the plethora of unjust barriers people face upon reentry and mobilize communities to support criminal justice reform legislation. Funds raised will allow Give a Beat (GAB) to expand their reentry mentoring program to reach more people and ensure that participants have the resources and support they need to pursue their creative career dreams. The campaign will run September 10 - October 10, 2020. More info is at allhandsonthedecks.com.

Give a Beat was awarded a Reentry Through The Arts grant from the California Arts Council to pilot its unique “On a New Track” reentry mentoring program in collaboration with Defy Ventures and California Mentoring Partnership. GAB will train eight formerly incarcerated participants from the Defy Ventures community in the art of DJing, music production, and related business and entrepreneurial skills. By connecting previously incarcerated individuals with music business professionals, Give a Beat aims to develop a cycle of change that encourages people to harness their creative talents while engaging members of the electronic music community to educate themselves about bills and legislation .

“Defy is excited to partner with Give a Beat to bring opportunities in the music industry to formerly incarcerated individuals in our program. There's no better city than Los Angeles in which to train people in a musical field, and people with criminal histories have incredible talent to share with the world if given the chance to do so. This partnership will lift the voices of people with criminal histories and create opportunities for them in the creative field in our city.” - Mariah Dickinson - Director of Development and Marketing, Defy Ventures.

In addition to raising funds to support previously incarcerated people on the individual level, Give a Beat’s “All Hands on the Decks” campaign also serves to advocate for people experiencing incarceration on the macro scale. By aligning with allies in the broader social justice movement, this campaign will bring attention to the various obstacles people face upon leaving prison. It will also educate the music community on ballot initiatives such as Prop 17 which restores the right to vote for people on parole and Prop 20 that aims to undo progressive transform.

“All Hands on the Decks” will also educate around the power that electable positions hold in relation to criminal justice at the city, county, and state levels. These positions are key to strengthening the defense of our civil rights and emboldening our ability to make progressive change. This campaign’s name illustrates that now is a critical time both for the organization and for the future of the country to have “All Hands on the Decks” to engage communities to get more involved and take meaningful action.

The Name Game

What's In A Name?!

"The name game. Shirley! Shirley, Shirley, Bo-ber-ley, bo-na-na fanna, Fo-fer-ley. fee fi mo-mer-ley, Shirley!Lincoln! Lincoln, Lincoln. bo-bin-coln, Bo-na-na fanna, fo-fin-coln, Fee fi mo-min-coln, Lincoln!" - The Name Game, Shirley Ellis

So today I though we might play a little game, the name game to be exact. Can you guess who this is? Let me give you a clue or two, perhaps three, "Yes" let's make it three.

Here she is at the premiere of the movie Mainstream at the Venice International Film Festival. Next clue - she is the offspring of famous acting parents. Final clue - She looks very much like her Mother.

Give up? It's Maya Thurman Hawke, daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, she has most notably appeared in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood.

She positively glows whilst attending the premiere of the film in which she stars.

What are you wearing right now? Have the kind of day you choose, give it a name!

Monday Motivation

R.I.P. Douglas Fairbanks
Hollywood Forever

With temperatures at record breaking 100 degree plus highs in Los Angeles this weekend. My sleep pattern has been whacked and my physical activity stunted.

Thus today I need a mighty dose of Monday Motivation as I plan on partaking in yoga at Hollywood Forever Cemetery at 8 am this morning before it gets hotter than Hell (today's high is supposed to clock in 110 degrees!!!)

Class is being held by the Douglas Fairbanks Memorial pictured above. Personally I think yoga held in a cemetery is a great idea. It certainly will be quite peaceful there and with the water and surrounding greenery, hey, I feel some motivation kicking in already.

Now if I can figure out where I left my keys...Happy Labor Day Minions!

The Long Hot Summer

Feel The Heat
Kristin Cavallari & Justin Anderson

Typically Labor Day Weekend is the last hurrah of Summer. Well since no one is really on any sort of schedule resembling typical this year and there is record heat happening everywhere let's just call this the long hot Summer, shall we? We shall!!!

Nothing truly says long, hot and Summer quite like this photo of Kristin Cavallari and her BFF Justin Anderson. Kristin posted this picture on her Instagram page with a caption reading: "Longest relationship of my life" - presumably meant to throw shade at the man formerly known as her husband Jay Cutler. Shade is a good thing during a long hot Summer after all...

Whether it was shade thrown or simply a testament to her and Justin's long standing friendship, or perhaps both. This photo makes temperatures rise and suddenly Summer got even hotter today.

Mic Drop!

It's Not Easy Being Green

Cool Hue
Vanessa Hudgens

Green is an odd color, it's present and abundant in the landscape of our daily lives. One might say it is the prominent hue in nature, actually I believe it most likely is.

This being stated, Green is something that is not really a color of choice for me to wear, or most people really. It's a color that very few can pull off and look good in.Thus it is not easy being Green.

However Vanessa Hudgens with her Green summer dress and matching mask are a completely different story.

See Vanessa wear the obtuse fashion color out and about in West Hollywood and pulling it off. One might even say she makes Green look good, like anybody could wear it, but we all know the truth.

Well I am going to seize the day and put on something that says cool, my color of choice? Something we all look good in, black!
