Carrie Borzillo Was There, Kurt Cobain's Death Remembered

Carlton Books has announced the re-issue of author/journalist Carrie Borzillo's first book, 2000's Eyewitness "Nirvana: The Day-by-Day Chronicle," with a new cover, title, and design as "Nirvana: In The Words of the People Who Were There" on April 1, 2014 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Kurt Cobain.
The book is on sale everywhere. Mr. Borzillo is selling a limited number of signed copies direct to the fans via her official website with a percentage of each autographed copy purchased being donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Being a Nirvana fan I had to satiate my curiosity and chat with another fellow fan - one that actually authored a book on the subject, here is what transpired...

MS: So I just recently learned, with the re-issue of your book that you are a Nirvana fan.

CB: Yes, but I would never put myself up there with the real hard core Nirvana fans. I was a music journalist so I knew them professionally, and of course being a music journalist I was passionate about music and I loved them, but those real hard core Nirvana fans who are not journalists and do not work in the industry - the just love Kurt Cobain so much! Of course I'm a fan but those real ones can recite every lyric, I sometimes forget what I wrote in my own book, OK? (laughs)

MS: I'm a fan like you are a fan too, I completely love their music and what they stood for but, I can barely remember some of the things I write either. (laughs) Yeah my over the top fan days are long gone.

CB: It's great to feel passionate about music and all of that, but it's not like when you were a teenager or in your twenties.

MS: When I first listened to Nirvana their music used to hit so many deep emotional triggers for me as I have grown older I still love the music, and it still hits certain things for me, but now I look at it more as great music, it's not as emotional now.

CB: It's hard for me to listen to Nirvana still without feeling, at least for me, that huge sense of sadness. When he sings you can really hear that struggle and inner turmoil, it comes out in every word he says, every lyric, every guitar strum is so full of pain, it's hard to listen to.

MS: I'm from the Seattle area by the way.

CB: Oh Wow! Were you around when Kurt's suicide happened?

MS: I was in Los Angeles actually.

CB: I lived in Los Angeles but was flown to a party in Seattle, and was there the day it happened, what a fluke, huh? The biggest news story of my career probably. What timing, weird you know?

MS: Personally I think Kurt Cobain was the last iconic figure we will ever have in rock music.

CB: Absolutely! He was the last true tortured artist who actually had something important to say, that changed pop culture and the music industry, and flipped everything upside down. He made the un-cool people, cool, the misfits became the popular kids. He made it OK to be different and brought alternative music to mainstream. That wasn't really his intention and he honestly struggled with his being indie, cool and underground and all of the sudden that becoming the biggest commercial thing.

MS: I'm sure it was a surprise.

CB: There will never be that again, and if someone does come out again who is like a Kurt Cobain figure, we've got to start counting his days. Those true artists who are coming from a deep lace of pain and suffering are not long for this world. Kurt was never going to live past twenty-seven I think.

MS: What did you think about those who were trying to pin Kurt's murder on Courtney Love?

CB: This happens with anyone who is as big of an icon as Kurt Cobain. It happened with Jim Morrison, it happened with Elvis Presley, the only person it didn't happen with was John Lennon because that was a real clear cut incident with witnesses and everything.

MS: No debating that one.

CB: Because Kurt was such an icon and Courtney was around we he committed suicide. Of course there is going to be all these theories and mysteries, it was clear cut suicide. Listening to all of the conspiracy theories was fun, that Courtney hired somebody to kill Kurt. You know it wouldn't surprise me if Courtney ever said, or had a conversation with someone saying: "I want to kill my husband." But in this case he did this alone.

MS: Why do you think there was some doubt in people's mind?

CB: One of the facts is that the level of heroin he had in his system would not have allowed him to pull the trigger on the gun. The thing is, that is true unless you are a super junkie, Kurt was a super junkie. His tolerance level was higher than the average junkie. I mean if did that much heroin I'd be dead in a second. People always say: "Well Doctors say it's impossible" - Yes, Doctors do say that, but there is a but there, if your tolerance level is as high as Kurt's then it is possible.

MS: Exactly!

CB: With the reissue I didn't want to just capitalize on this horrible tragedy that happened, I wanted to give back and am donating some money to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, if you buy singed copies through me on my site. It's great to celebrate his life right now, we are remembering someone who contributed so much to the music industry. But let's bring it back to what really happened: drug addiction, suicide, depression...that's what was really going on with him. Anything I can do to shine a little light on that is what I want to do.

Get Ready For Shania, Twain That Is

Remember when Shania Twain was hot, hot, hot with the multi-platinum selling album "Come On Over?"

Not only did it sell 20 million copies (Dr. Evil would have been so proud) on CD. Yes people actually used to buy those too.

It was actually one of my favorite discs, being a music whore I had many favorites. Time to check out this blast from the Shania past!

The Discovery Of Eilleen Twain

CD / DVD combo pack available on February 11

Featuring early footage and songs from Shania Twain,
when she was still struggling artist Eilleen Twain.

Eilleen Twain got her first break in the late 80s  in Viva Vegas, a legendary Vegas style resort show produced by Brian Ayers at Deerhurst Inn Resort in Ontario, Canada.

Vegas North brings revealing interviews with former cast members and music veterans of that era, taking you back to Eilleen's roots along with footage of her heartfelt renditions of "Somewhere Out There" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow."

The Bonus CD, Eilleen Twain: Beginnings 1989-1990 features ten re-mastered songs Shania's early career. The tracks are just what the title indicates: the beginnings - tunes intended to be used as demos to help draw attention to a young and struggling singer who would become a country diva known and loved around the world.

These are more rock, power pop, and adult contemporary than country, fitting into the late 80s just as they should have when they were recorded.

In Case Your Wondering, Pentatonix Is Going As Lorde This Halloween

Trick or Treat? Obviously a Treat!

That's right everyone the worlds favorite acapella group PTX is delivering a Halloween treat this year by pulling off the trick of covering  singer Lorde's debut #1 Billboard smash "Royals" which took down Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball' from the throne of #1.

As usual the PTX gang knocks it out of the park with their amazing arrangement and vocals.

Since this is the month of Halloween and I know you would all rather have treats than tricks, or you may think those two are one in the same, but whatever your take you owe yourself to celebrate by giving your ears the treat of Pentatonix covering "Royals" by Lorde, way better than any rock you may get going door to door...!

Boo!

This is from my interview with Eric about his concert DVD "Under The Ink" for "Chorus and Verse", you can jump and read it here:

Let me give it up for Eric so you can hear about it from him:

"From my amazing backup singers (Tylisha Oliver and Tina Phillips) to my horn section (Ryan Tedder and Dave Johnson), it is not hard to hear "Red Hot Tears" is different from my previous work. I've always loved writing in different genres but this sound feels more like me than any other. The CD, Gracefully, and music video were both shot in my hometown of Tulsa, OK which is a first. Very proud of that."

In case you were otherwise engaged this past week, No Doubt has finally reunited and released their first full length studio album in 11 years "Push and Shove"...really?! WTF?! What took you sooooooo long guys?!

Well I guess there were the two solo albums by Gwen Stefani in the interim (loved them both, I love her solo and with ND) - and everyone else went and pursued personal gigs...Hey Adrian I know I saw  you drumming for Bow Wow Wow once or twice.

"Settle Down" is the latest single from the album of one of the best pop/rock bands evuh in this critic/writer/music lovers opinion.

Loving that the band has released a collective effort and you know I love me some Gwen Stefani, Gwen Stefani, Gwen Stefani.....

What is that image at the top of the blog? Why it's my autographed photo of  Ms.Thing herself that hangs next to my vanity mirror in my closet with my clothes, I can not think of a better place for it to be.

A shout out to my friend Joy Collingbourne who works at the M.O.B. Agency the entity that manages ND and GS together or separate - for getting it for me....

Hey, Killian Wells "It's Like That"

It’s no surprise that musician, songwriter and melodic dude Killian Wells, hails from New York City. Only the eclectic energy of a town like NYC could produce a pop star whose music appeals to dance freaks, new wavers and rockers alike.

Although he struggled with anxiety and panic disorder since he was a boy, Killian learned to masterfully harness that nervous energy into his music.

Marked as “someone to watch” by bloggers, critics and fans alike, the buzz about Killian is growing. With his latest single and video co-starring GloZell & featuring Nixon...Yep Killian “It's Like That”!
MS: So, let's talk about your music, I was watching the video for “It's Like That” just before you called, would you be the bored employee at the diner you portrayed? (laughs)
KW: Probably not (laughs) I am kind of an overachiever. I'd probably be running the diner within a month.
MS: Well sometimes creative people tend to check out.
KW: Yeah, I definitely go into my own little world sometimes, and taking Klonopin for anxiety disorder doesn't help. (laughs) That helps me check out. Society in general these days suffers from some form of anxiety, there is always something to be anxious about, some people just don't tolerate it well. I have anxiety disorder since I was sixteen.
MS: Tell me about your fascination with music, when did it start?
KW: I've always been involved in the arts, I, funny enough I wanted to be a movie director when I was a kid. That is one of my fascinations with my music videos.
MS: The video for “It's Like That” is great by the way.
KW: I always have a hand in everything I do with my my music videos. Which is really rare for a pop artist, most people have handlers who are doing all the stuff for them. I've always wanted to be in entertainment to some degree, I initially wanted to be a director, then I wanted to get into acting, when I was twelve I met with New York agents who said the problem was that I looked my age, they wanted older who could play younger, well I said “Fuck This”. I was so upset that I couldn't do something that I wanted to do because of the way that I looked. Pop music was something that I have always been into, I thought if all these other kids can do this, then why can't I? I've always been very entrepreneurial driven, so I saw not just as a talent, but as a business. So I started studying the music business and seeing how I could do that, I did my first demo at the age of fifteen...then I um, um...I lost my train of thought, Klonopin! (laughs)
MS: (laughs) Oooops!
KW: Oh Yeah, now I remember I had a background in music, I used to sing in a chorus at an old folks home. (laughs) And at five years old I used to sing “Spoonful of Sugar” from “Mary Poppins” not gay at all. (laughs)
MS: One of my favorite quotes from the video of “It's Like That” that I have to ask you is: If Lady Gaga said sesame seed buns were all the rage this season, would you wear them?
KW: Uh no. I actually wrote the line “Lady Gaga says sesame seed buns are all the rage this season”.
MS: It's very funny.
KW: Thanks. It's funny because GloZell gets all the credit for it, everyone thinks it's her line because she says it. Little does everyone know, I wrote the treatment for the video. (laughs)

Celebrating 50 Years Of "Close To Cathy": Mike Clifford

Vintage Mike Clifford Photo

Former Teen Idol and "Entertain Me" staple Mike Clifford is celebrating - today July 25th 2012 marks the 50th Anniversary of his signature hit "Close To Cathy".

Mike "I'm Not Dead Yet" Clifford has a few things to say about CTC's 50th...

MC: It feels like 10 years since I recorded it

MS: Did you think the song would be this enduring?

MC: Never. I was hoping it would last 15 days on the charts, but it actually lasted 12 weeks in the top 100. It's just amazing - I'm still identified with it and I have so many memories associated with it, along with so much wonderful feedback, it's just amazing!

MS: What do you want your legacy to be?

MC: Everyone is given some kind of talent whatever it may be. Mine was singing and other things shot off of that with the acting and the dancing. I just tried to make the most of what I had at the time, and constantly improve myself to be the best I could always be...I worked hard to make the most of what little talent I had. (laughs) My legacy is for people to remember, whatever I did, I always tried 100% ! The proof is in the pudding, if you are still listening to my music, not just "Close To Cathy" 50 years later...

MS: Cool!

Check out Mike in a more recent performance of his signature hit "Close To Cathy"

For Immediate Release: James Durbin Update

Hey "Entertain Me" peeps remember my chat with James about his Rock-N-Roll fantasies?

http://mshinafelt.blogspot.com/2011/11/james-durbins-rock-n-roll-fantasy.html

Well here is an update on the rockin' "American Idol" finalist -

American Idol’s James Durbin Cracks Top 10 on Billboard’s Rock Album Chart with Debut Album, Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster
First Two Singles Impact Rock and Top 40 Radio
Revolver Magazine names James one of the “100 Greatest Living Rock Stars”

December 2011- Los Angeles, CA – American Idol finalist, James Durbin, is celebrating a whirlwind year with the release of his Wind-Up Records debut album Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster as it cracks the Top 10 on Billboard’s Rock Album chart at #8 and #36 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album chart.

Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster features not one, but two lead singles with the power-charged ballad “Love Me Bad” at Top 40 radio and the anthemic rock single, “Stand Up” which is a gleaming showcase for Durbin’s signature rock-star yowl and powerful, energetic voice. The NFL has tapped “Stand Up” as its stadium anthem featuring it on jumbotrons nationwide during its games this Fall/Winter season. James will be performing with his band during half-time shows at various games this Winter including the Atlanta Falcons game on December 15 and the San Francisco 49ers game on December 19.

People magazine gives Memories Of a Beautiful Disaster a 3 out of 4 star review and says “Durbin is one of the best voices to come out of Idol. His debut packs metallic muscle.” In addition, Revolver magazine has named James one of the “100 Greatest Living Rock Stars” alongside other rock icons including Ozzy Osbourne, Nikki Sixx, Gene Simmons and Dave Grohl.

Unforgettable performances on the Idol stage with legends such as Judas Priest and Zakk Wylde led Durbin’s own “Idols” to support the rocker’s first ever release. Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe, songwriters James Michael (Sixx A.M, Mötley Crüe) and Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Buckcherry, Ozzy Osbourne) along with Swedish rock band Hardcore Superstar all contributed to the making of Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster. Durbin, who co-wrote five of the albums tracks exclaimed it was “surreal” to be working with this bevy of rock royalty and recalls, “When Mick Mars started shredding on his guitar I literally lost my mind.” The long-time Mötley Crüe fan continued saying, “He’s a true rock legend and he’s playing on my record. It doesn’t get any cooler than that.” Mick Mars echoed the same fervor, “It was sick to have played on James’ debut album. To be the only featured guest artist on the record was really cool as I know a lot of others wanted to be on it. James Durbin kicks ass, he’s the real deal.”

On American Idol, James Durbin waved the flag for rock and it was that devotion to rock that helped him overcome his private struggles with tourette’s and aspergers syndrome. He touched the hearts of people everywhere while on the show, and with the release of Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster he is proudly waving that flag high again.

Rocker Reveals Track Listing

October 2011 Los Angeles, CA – American Idol finalist, James Durbin, is gearing up for the release of his Wind-Up album Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster on November 21st, and is giving fans a taste of what’s to come as he reveals the track list and first two singles from the highly anticipated debut. The anthemic lead single “Stand Up” will go to rock radio and the power-charged “Love Me Bad” will go to Top 40.

Unforgettable performances on the Idol stage with legends such as Judas Priest and Zakk Wylde led Durbin’s own “Idols” to support the rocker’s first ever release. Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe, songwriters James Michael (Sixx A.M, Mötley Crüe) and Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Buckcherry, Ozzy Osbourne) along with Swedish rock band Hardcore Superstar. It doesn’t get any cooler than that.” Mick Mars echoed the same fervor, “It was sick to have played on James’ debut album. To be the only featured guest artist on the record was really cool as I know a lot of others wanted to be on it. James Durbin kicks ass, he’s the real deal.”

“Stand Up” is a gleaming showcase for Durbin’s signature rock-star yowl and powerful, energetic voice and the NFL agrees. It has tapped the single as its stadium anthem for the 2011 season featuring it on jumbotrons nationwide during games this fall and are featuring it on their “Game Day” EP as the song impacts radio.

22 year-old Durbin was guided throughout the making of “Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster” by leading rock producer, Howard Benson. Benson (My Chemical Romance, Daughtry, Motorhead) gives Durbin room to evolve musically on the hard-hitting album saying the opportunity to work with Durbin was “Pretty Simple: I loved his voice. I think he has a compelling story to tell.” Benson, who kept his eye on Durbin throughout Idol thought “it was interesting that he spoke his mind and didn’t back down from who he was. That’s always a good sign.”

On American Idol, James Durbin waved the flag for rock and it was that devotion to rock that helped him overcome his private struggles with tourette’s and aspergers syndrome. He touched the hearts of people everywhere while on the show, and with the release of “Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster” he is ready to wave that flag high again.
