The Montalbán is proud to partner with Infinity Grove Entertainment to present Los Angeles audiences with a special opportunity to experience an enhanced workshop production of Accidental Joy: A New Musical, coming to the theatre for one-night-only on Saturday, June 29, 2019. Book by Marcus Terrell Smith, music by Robbie McDonald, and lyrics by both, Accidental Joy is a dark comedy musical about one woman’s incredible journey to find the guru within, and the four or five hilarious murders that follow her along the way. Doors will open at 7:00pm and the performance will begin at 8:00pm on the Montalbán’s main stage (1615 Vine Street, Hollywood, CA 90028). Tickets range from $37 to $52. For tickets and more on this production, please call the box office at 323-461-6999 or visithttps://www.themontalban.com/accidentaljoy.
Accidental Joy: A New Musical – Synopsis:
Joy Perkins, a 40-year old disgruntled underachiever, has resigned herself to a life of regret and unfulfilled potential. But when world famous guru, Niev Lapel, comes to town, Joy is determined to take one final stab at getting what she deserves and becomes a guru herself. Laden with adult language and situations, catchy original songs, and four or five murders,Accidental Joy: A New Musical, is a third-eye opening dark comedy that speaks to the central role we play in forging our own destinies.

Accidental Joy was written as a singer’s musical,” explains writer and co-lyricist Smith, “where each song, though it propels the story forward, can stand alone. We really wanted to write something a musical theatre actor could really sink their teeth into and perform. We found an awe-inspiring array of amazing teammates to realize this such as actor Tyren Perry (Bustin’ Loose, Family Matters) and orchestrator/arranger Anthony Sabatino, along with a stellar band. Come one, come all, and be enlightened!”

Accidental Joy: A New Musical bloomed out of a fateful meeting between Smith and McDonald one night outside of an empty Los Angeles bar. Producer Linda Joe joined the dynamic team right after its sold-out “first look” event in April 2018. Since then, the trio has worked tirelessly to bring Accidental Joy’s message of self-confidence and a belief in one's self to life. This new musical is coming into its own with a glowing endorsement from the prestigious La Jolla Playhouse, it was an Official Selection at the 2018 New York Musical Festival and enjoyed a sold-out staged reading event at the Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles last October.

This year, The Montalbán, a theatre building a reputation as an early champion of new productions—helping to nurture shows for eventual tours and Broadway-bound engagements—became a fan and supportive friend. Together with the show's producers, Linda Joe and Marcus Terrell Smith, they are deviating from the standard theater development process. For one thing, presentations of new shows are usually done for small focus groups but Accidental Joy is changing the trend and inviting 1,000 theater goers to have direct involvement in the development of this unique show, which will employ minimal sets and costumes for this workshop production on the 29th.

As Joy Perkins likes to say, “You can’t go half-ass on fate. She needs both cheeks to sit on.”

Just Because... Evil Queens

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...Bite Me!
Alec Baldwin & Olivia Wilde
With the Pride Celebration that happened this past weekend in Los Angeles, somehow Evil Queens are on my mind..go figure. As evil as many Queens in Los Angeles can be, none will ever top (pun intended) the biggest bad ass of them all, Queen Grimhilde from Snow White

Thus I present to you Olivia Wilde as her royal evilness and Alec Baldwin as her magic mirror on the wall. As captured through famed photographer Annie Leibovitz's lens for an ad campaign for Disneyland.

That's correct boys this Evil Queen will do more than throw shade and give you two snaps. She will outright hunt your ass down and kill you. Killer Queens from Outer Space, now there's a movie I would go see!

So Just Because Queens are on my mind, it does not mean they can't be deliciously evil fun. Instead of snarky and lame.

Mic Drop!

Monday Motivation

Don't Be Tardy For The Party
Alice in Wonderland
Another week, another Monday...."Yes" it's time for some Monday Motivation Minions (say THAT three times fast)

This is one of those Mondays that I am not sure what could Motivate me. I'm kind of feeling somewhat like I fell down a rabbit hole. Thus today's MM is fantasy, we all need an escape from time to time and what better way to life our spirits and make us smile than some good old fashioned escapism of the mind.

What came to my mind today is already obvious, or it should be given the image accompanying this post. Alice in Wonderland is the rabbit hole I fell down when I woke-up this ayem feeling like Grumpy Cat, because I am in pain am having surgery for it today.

Thus while I am getting my toe broken and reset I will be hanging with Alice and the denizens of Wonderland in the corners of my mind.

So, what tickles your fantasy fancy today? Inquiring minds want to know...

Happy Pride!

Proud
Jonathan Bennett
For those of you living over the rainbow, instead of under it, the month of June is official Pride Month. Today is the Los Angeles Pride Parade held in the city of West Hollywood. Thus I thought I would take today and do a special Pride shout out. Oh, and I will be attending the parade as well, because I love a parade...! 😄

So here is a Proud image that caught my attention in a fun way. Well I am sure most of you have seen the movie Mean Girls. They wore pink on Wednesdays for those of you out of the loop. Here we have out Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett wearing a T-Shirt with a Pride take on the wearing pink thing.

"Yes" Wednesdays are now for wearing rainbows, you know how that connection goes.

Anyway, Happy Pride minions, keep on keeping!

CHERIE CURRIE & BRIE DARLING
Reveal Official Album Cover For “The Motivator” - Out August 2

Time For Some Motivation -

Los Angeles-based, female rock icons, Cherie Currie and Brie Darling have joined together to record their debut album, The Motivator.  The album will be released August 2, 2019 on Blue Élan Records and is available for pre-order today –http://smarturl.it/CherieBriePreOrder

Cherie & Brie also revealed the official album artwork today and have released their cover of The Youngbloods’ “Get Together,” which is available on all streaming services – http://smarturl.it/CCBDGetTogether and Cherie Currie & Brie Darling - Get Together [Official Audio]

In addition, the video for lead track & single, “The Motivator” can be viewed here: Cherie Currie & Brie Darling - "The Motivator" [Official Music Video]

The Motivator was produced by the six-time Grammy nominated Dave Darling (Brian Setzer, Stray Cats, Janiva Magness, Tom Waits) and features nine classic covers by bands including T. Rex, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, plus three powerful new originals, “Too Bruised,” “I’m Too Good, That’s Just Too Bad” and the topical “This Is Our Time.”

Guests on the album include a host of family and friends who came in to do backups, including Currie’s sister, actress Sondra Currie, her ex-husband, actor Robert Hays; friends, Susan Olsen of Brady Bunch fame, Leslie Koch Foumberg,  and actress/director, Allison Scagliotti. Darling’s brother, Henry Berry is on “He Ain’t Heavy”; and brother Phil Berry does a guitar solo on the Kinks tune “Do it Again” while her sister, Rory Berry Bishop plays drums on Thunderclap Newman’s “Something in the Air.” Patti Quatro—Suzi’s sister and a member of Fanny—plays guitar and sings on “For What It’s Worth.”

The Runaways front-woman and solo artist, Currie, met the Fanny drummer and singer, Darling, in 2017 and immediately connected.  Currie had come in to contribute vocals to Fanny Walked the Earth, a reunion album from the trailblazing Fanny, the first all-female band signed to a major label (Reprise) in 1969.  Though the two musicians were certainly admirers of each other, they had not yet met until that session.  Once connected, the idea to continue collaborating was hatched and soon the idea to record an album was solidified.

It was decided they would record an album of cover songs that resonated with the duo.  The covers chosen mostly share—unintentionally—a socio-political resonance that’s as relevant today as when the songs were written.  “The original album concept was that Brie was going to sing a few, I’d sing a few, and we’d back each other up,” furthers Currie. “But I knew our voices really work well together. On T. Rex’s ‘The Motivator,’ Brie did a great soulful rock scratch vocal but maybe I have more of a tough rock quality to my voice, so I think Dave decided I was going to sing it.  But in my head I heard a duet, me doing the first verse, her on the second verse….and that started the dialog of using our voices together as a concept. Our voices complement each other, so we decided we should share the majority of these songs, because it makes them better.”  Producer Dave Darling says, "It's extremely rare to have two such powerful vocalists in the same band. Cherie's a steamroller and Brie's a flame thrower. That just doesn't happen!"
