Michael's Musings

We Can Be Us
Michael Shinafelt

"We can be heroes, just for one day" - David Bowie, Heroes

So this lyric popped into mind this past week with all the ridiculousness going on in the world. Wouldn't it be nice if more people ascended to this instead of descending to the downward spiral.

"Yes" actually it would. OK, time to Muse Minions!!!

Remember when the Academy Awards weren't like The Jerry Springer Show???

Muff Thumper, discuss...

I'm a vessel of love, peace and harmony

Been reading some banned books, I'm curious what certain states are afraid of (I actually know, but...)

PS my dog who is lawyer knows what a burner phone is

'RHONY' star Leah McSweeney recalls being Julia Fox's AA sponsor. Way to keep it classy McSweeney, isn't the word anonymous in there somewhere?!

One day I'm gonna write about lizard people, you'll see

BTW you will never convince me that seagulls do not crap without malice

Woman Crush of the Week - Jessica Chastain, not for her Oscar win (I was team Stewart) but for her Oscar speech. You go Jessica!

Reminder: Take a moment to breathe

So be it, indeed

Gay! Oops I said it again!

That's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight, smoking with my chicken (don't ask)

FYI I've officially done every variation possible

Hump Day & Chill

Puttin' On The Ritz
Jacob Elordi

While many of you, including myself, are still processing the Oscar telecast, today we choose to accentuate the positive.

That's correct Minions we are going to Hump Day & Chill to that tall drink of water Jacob Elordi. Oh Lordy, it's Elordi!

Jacob best known for his role as Nate Jacobs on Euphoria  was serving up old school Hollywood glamour at the Oscars, looking dashing in a tuxedo at the to do.

Currently Elordi stars alongside Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas in Adrian Lyne's Deep Water on Hulu, which has copious amounts a skin baring. "Yes" we all need Hulu to spy Jacob in various stages of undress right here, right now.

In the meantime we have him in a looking dapper and sexy in this tux.

So Minions you know what time it is don't you? It's time to Hump Day & Chill!!!

The Academy Awards

The Hosts With The Most
l-r
Amy Schumer, Regina Hall & Wanda Sykes

It's Oscar Sunday Minions, and aren't you happy??? Well I am, so there!

Mainly because I have seen many of the nominated films and performances so that amps they enjoyment factor of the show up a few notches.

Also with Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes & Regina Hall hosting the to do should be quite entertaining at the very least.

My favorite film of all the nominees is The Power of the Dog, but CODA (which I liked as well) looks to have gained momentum and will most likely win Best Picture.

There is however a chance that my favorite performance by an Actress this year could win being as the Best Actress category is a pretty open field.

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana should, and deserves to win. While she may not, I call foul if she doesn't.

Everything is coming up Oscar today!

Live From Vienna!

Dave Brubeck Trio - Live From Vienna 1967

Brubeck Editions is thrilled to announce the release of Dave Brubeck Trio – Live From Vienna 1967, the newly discovered recording of the extraordinary evening when the iconic Dave Brubeck Quartet was forced to take the stage as a trio. This electrifying album marks the only recording of jazz luminary Dave Brubeck, celebrated drummer Joe Morello and acclaimed bassist Eugene Wright performing in a trio context. During this performance at Vienna’s famed Konzerthaus, the pared-down instrumentation proves only to exemplify the genius of Brubeck and his legendary rhythm section. This historical release will drop as a compact disc on April 15, 2022, followed by a special LP release on April 23, 2022 for Record Store Day.

The date was November 12, 1967 and the Dave Brubeck Quartet was nearing the end of their very last tour of Europe. They had played in Hamburg on November 10th, but saxophonist Paul Desmond got “distracted” after going out on the town for one last evening to explore Hamburg with an old friend. When the rest of the quartet went to the airport on the morning of November 11th, Paul was missing. He didn’t make the lobby call or the flight and the rest of the group traveled to Vienna without him.
Grammy nominated composer and son of Dave, Chris Brubeck notes “Knowing my father, he was probably worried about Paul. However, Dave also would have suspected that Paul may have been out celebrating too hard.” Brubeck must have felt assured that Desmond would show up, as Chris indicates, “ there were later flights Paul could take to get to Vienna in time for the concerts”. But Paul never made it to Vienna, and the remaining members of the quartet were reluctantly pushed into an exciting place of spontaneous invention and exploration. As Chris notes “Dave often said that the audience was the fifth member of the Quartet. In this unique situation, the Trio played a singular and inspired set no doubt influenced by this particular concert’s fourth member of the ensemble – the Viennese audience. There was suddenly more solo space for all three musicians to explore with their inspired improvisations. These performers instinctively utilized the great sound and dynamics of this hallowed concert hall both to rattle the rafters and float gentle melodies up to the balconies.” The recording highlights the late “Senator” Eugene Wright, who sadly passed away December 30, 2020. The last surviving member of the quartet, he was always appreciated as the foundation upon which the other members of the quartet relied, but on this recording, he has more space to show off his formidable bass chops.

The trio sizzles with a ferocious energy right out of the gate with a spirited take on “St. Louis Blues”. For chorus after chorus, Brubeck offers up some of the finest examples of his signature chordal and rhythmic performing, while interspersing soulful, lyrical melodies in his right hand. About five minutes into the track during his bass solo, Gene quotes “I’m Going to Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair”, likely a joke for Brubeck and Morello referring to their missing bandmate, Desmond. The band continues with “One Moment Worth Years”, on which Brubeck and Wright’s touch can be described as charming, inventive and elegant.

“Swanee River” features an up-tempo syncopated groove that sets up a very polyrhythmic and high-spirited interpretation of the Stephen Foster composition that the trio had previously recorded alongside Desmond on the 1959 album Gone With the Wind. Notably, Brubeck engages in some very spirited trades with drummer Joe Morello. The trio calms things down with a sweet and tender version of “La Paloma Azul”, a Mexican folk tune rearranged with an ingenious polyphonic twist that appears during the closing melodic statement.

The crowd immediately recognizes “Someday My Prince Will Come”, and the piano leads the group on an intense romp that challenges the underlying time from the rhythm section with an elastic piano solo superimposing 3 against 2. As Chris Brubeck indicates “Dave bends the time to the near breaking point, a musical drama that an audience can really feel and follow.” The album concludes with a tune known throughout the world – “Take the A Train”.

As Chris Brubeck espouses, “I think if our dad were alive to hear this Brubeck Trio recording now, he’d be flashing his famous big smile. He would be extremely proud to hear how, more than half a century ago, he, Gene and Joe got thrown a curve ball and knocked it out of the park!”

Where Are You, Jay Bennett?

Wilco’s Jay Bennett rocks his own documentary from

directors Gorman Bechard & Fred Uhter

WHERE ARE YOU, JAY BENNETT?, a feature-length documentary on the renown multi-instrumentalist and recording studio savant, will have its BluRay and pay-per-view release on April 19th, 2022 from MVD Entertainment, and four days later a very special Record Store Day release featuring the film on DVD along with Bennett’s last two albums Kicking at the Perfumed Air & Whatever Happened I Apologize available for the first time on vinyl.

As a member of Wilco, Bennett was a large part of the genius behind their three seminal albums. He joined the band prior to the recording of their second album, Being There, and subsequently co-wrote most of Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot with Jeff Tweedy (and has been called the sonic architect of both albums). Bennett was also instrumental in the recording of the Mermaid Avenue/Woody Guthrie sessions with Billy Bragg, and went on to a critically acclaimed solo career before dying tragically at the age of 45.

WHERE ARE YOU, JAY BENNETT? is one of the most intimate portraits of a musician ever filmed. Using a mixture of audio interviews with Jay, never-before-seen performance footage, animation, and extensive interviews with those who knew him best, directors Gorman Bechard and Fred Uhter give an extraordinary account of this fascinating artist’s life. We get a no-holds-barred history of how Jay Bennett helped create one of the greatest rock trilogies of all time, and an honest look at the other side of the narrative that had been created in the media once Bennett had been asked to leave the band.

“At the time of his firing, Jay’s behavior was cast in a negative light. But there are always two sides to every story.” Bechard explains. “In this film, we show just how instrumental Jay was to Wilco’s brilliance. How Bennett and Tweedy together truly were one of the greatest collaborative teams in rock history, but also how they were both perfectionists who needed to push boundaries. Ultimately, that was simply not sustainable in a band setting.”

The 104-minute film, funded completely through KickStarter, is an insight into a piece of American musical history exploring Bennett’s life, his influences, his art, his obsessions, his vices, music, recording, and, of course, Wilco and their unfortunate split.

“The animation by Ed Gendron brings to life these amazing interviews with Jay,” Uhter says. “To be able to hear his voice, to have Jay himself tell his side of the story, talk about how records were made, and what role he played… it’s a priceless piece of music history.”

Bechard is the filmmaker behind 2011’s COLOR ME OBSESSED, A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS, which The Village Voice called the “rock version of Rashomon,” and Rolling Stone dubbed one of “The Seven Best New Music Documentaries of the Year.”

Are you ready, boots? It's time to start walkin' - remember Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars and the first season of You?

Well here she is in NYC wearing a really cool pair of red boots with the caption:

No lies detected in this statement. Anyway Shay is so stylish and pretty and I'm sure a liar, like everyone else given specific situations.

Getting To Know The Whitmore Sisters

The Whitmore Sisters

Sat., Apr. 23 •LOS ANGELES• Hotel Cafe

1623 N. Cahuenga Blvd.  Showtime: 7:00 p.m. Tickets $25

Media praise for The Whitmore Sisters recently released album Ghost Stories (Red House Records, 1/21/22)

“Sibling harmony can be a contradiction in terms.  It also makes for lovely music, and that’s the case here. The sisterly sonorities of Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore mesh beautifully on their duo debut, the voices are easy to differentiate but complementary as they explore a range of styles.”  -- ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ghosts are always with us, waiting for the right moment, or reason, to reveal themselves. Then a song, a stretch of road, or someone’s laughter hits your ear, and suddenly you’re back in the moment, feeling the rush of emotions as if time never moved on. For Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore, two of roots music’s most accomplished songwriter/ instrumentalist/ vocalists, the ghosts chose to appear right as Covid became entrenched — when live music evaporated and people were isolated from each other.

Bonnie, whose four solo albums are all state-of-a-real-woman’s-heart jewels, decided to join sister Eleanor and her husband Chris Masterson in their Los Angeles closed circle for a break. Chris, who’s recorded four albums with his wife as The Mastersons, saw the visit as an opportunity to issue a practical mandate: If Bonnie was coming, it was time for the sisters to make an album. Not just an album, but “the album” — the musical inevitability that’s been simmering since a 22-year-old Eleanor was protecting her curly headed 15-year-old sister at gigs in local bars. The collection, along with two covers — a song by their pal Aaron Lee Tasjan (“Big Heart Sick Mind” and “On the Wings of a Nightingale” (written by Paul McCartney for iconic siblings The Everly Brothers) — was produced by Chris Masterson and completes Ghost Stories, their debut album which was released on January 21, 2022 on Red House Records.

The sisters’ closeness and unconventional upbringing, not to mention their melodic sensibility and pure blood harmonies, have created something truly special with their debut album.

“We have all these things that make us us,” Bonnie says. “Our mother was an opera singer; our father was a folk singer.  Trained to fly as girls by a father who was an accomplished Navy Air carrier pilot, they were exposed to amphibious planes, jets, props and all sorts of aviation possibilities. Consequently, The Whitmore Sisters see the world from an above-the-world perspective. Marveling at the whimsy that comes with flying, they also acknowledge that flight allows you to see things in larger ways and make connections most people miss.

“We’re both seasoned musicians,” Eleanor offers. “We’ve made so many records on our own, for ourselves and with other artists. I’m classically trained.  When we come together, we understand each other, because we have so much shared musical vocabulary.”
Ultimately, Ghosts Stories' cathartic songs embrace the beauty and the experience of living. What came from lockdown and shared experiences —hiking the Grand Canyon at 5, playing bars at 15 or just embracing the beauty of living — is an album to take you places and make you feel so alive.
“Music should move people,” Eleanor affirms. “Or at least cause some kind of reaction. Sometimes it’s comforting, or you can rock out! I’ve always liked Woody Guthrie’s way of looking at it: “Music is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.”

Hump Day & Chill

Homicidal Tendencies
Paul Dano
as
The Riddler

Like many of you out there I am still reeling over The Batman. What an amazing piece of filmmaking! Unlike many of you I have not seen the film twice or even five times. Honestly Minions it's three hours long how you have found the time to do that is well beyond my comprehension. This being stated I definitely do want another go at it as I am 100% certain it will get even better on a second viewing.

While there are many things about it that rent space in my head daily, today we are going to Hump Day & Chill to Paul Dano as The Riddler. Never has there ever been a more terrifying depiction of this villain in a Batman movie. In fact his first appearance on screen in the film is straight outta a horror movie.

Did you know Matt Reeves modeled his Riddler after the infamous Zodiac Killer who terrorized CA in the 1960's? Well now you do, and it shows in how genuinely creepy Dano is in the role.

So a big Hump Day & Chill salute to Paul Dano, who haunts our collective nightmares. OK, time for me to get to that second go of The Batman...Ciao!

Pushing Daisies

Pusher
Jon Hamm

Saw this photo of Jon Hamm looking sexy as usual with a daisy and decided today that I'm gonna be a pusher, of daisies that is, especially ones in the same zip code as Jon Hamm.

"Yes" the only thing that makes this daisy special is it's getting Hammered. Seriously daisies are rather bland as flowers go.

The point of this? Daisies are a go to thing, only if they have some Hamm on the side.

Sunday Funday

The Krofft Superstar Hour

I have a tale to tell...I remember when The Bay City Rollers were big (I had their albums) and I remember when Sid and Marty Krofft shows ruled the airwaves. Thus imagine (in a John Lennon sort of way) my nostalgia and giddy kiddie-ness when I came across this image of the BCR and some Sid and Marty Krofft characters!

Can you name all the characters in the pic with the Rollers and the show they were on? I can...role call now!

Hump Day & Chill

The Batman
Robert Pattinson

I have a tale to tell, March 6th 2022. The Place: Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA The time: 10:20 ayem. What happened: I saw The Batman.

So this means I am gonna Hump Day & Chill myself to Robert Pattinson as The Batman.

Honestly I never really paid Pattinson much mind. Especially with those Twilight movies (cough, cough)

But then something truly miraculous happened, Bobby as those of us familiar with him refer to him as. Grew into who he was as a grown ass man. Well now Pattison, why don't you come up and see me sometime...

The Batman blew my mind and in no small part due to my newest man crush Robert Pattinson. "Yes" little Robert is now big Robert and it's real, not to mention spectacular!

Wanna join me in a Hump Day & Chill to Bobby? I think I know THAT answer...

Something In The Way...

Grauman's Chinese Theater

Yesterday I went and saw The Batman at the historic Chinese Theater in Hollywood, IMAX style.

Batman is my jam and IMO this was the best Batman movie ever! Robert Pattinson is the best movie Batman ever!

There I said it. Now on to the important stuff. While I have been to movies in a theater last year etc. I really wasn't prepared for how emotional I got being in the iconic Chinese again.

From the hand prints in the cement, to the amazing architecture inside. You can feel the history of this shrine to movie going leap into your soul.

A little bit dramatic? Not really, accurate to my feelings, it is.

I mean I even took this photo of Marilyn Monroe's hand and foot prints (yes I had seen them before) I was feeling so nostalgic.

Sally Forth and smile like you mean it, it's Monday!!!

Here's Looking At You

Pucker Up!
Michelle Pfeiffer

How has everyone's week been? Mine been pretty good, today I'm going to see The Batman at the Chinese in Hollywood IMAX style and I can't wait!

Being as it is the close of the weekend I felt it  called for some levity and also something that is reflective of how I woke up feeling this morning (hey I had a good dream, what can I say???)

Thus when I saw this quite silly photo of Michelle Pfeiffer I knew this was it, this was what captured it all starting my day off.

Oddly I have never seen Michelle act this goofy for a photo ever! I never even new she posed for photos like this. She usually looks so serious or smiling, but never downright off the wall.

So if Michelle can do it...

Bend it like Michelle, here's looking at you!!!

Film Buff Friday: An American Werewolf In London

"A horror film that packs a wallop"  -

Janet Maslin, The New York Times

One of the greatest directors of the 1980s, John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places), expertly combines macabre horror with dark humor in the lycanthropic classic, An American Werewolf in London. American tourists David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) are savaged by an unidentified vicious animal whilst hiking on the Yorkshire Moors. David awakes in a London hospital to find his friend dead and his life in disarray. Retiring to the home of a beautiful nurse (Jenny Agutter, Walkabout) to recuperate, he soon experiences disturbing changes to his mind and body, undergoing a full-moon transformation that will unleash terror on the streets of the capital... An American Werewolf in London had audiences howling with laughter and recoiling in terror upon its cinema release. Landis' film has gone on to become one of the most important horror films of its decade, rightly lauded for its masterful set-pieces, uniquely unsettling atmosphere and Rick Baker's truly ground-breaking, Oscar-winning special makeup effects. Now newly restored and presented with an abundance of extra features, this big beast of horror can be devoured as never before...
