Michael's Musings

I'm The Ghost With The Most, Babe!
Michael Shinafelt

"It's Showtime!"  - Beetlejuice

Ah, those Facebook memories, where would we be without them? This one came up today from an exhibit I went to five years ago in Los Angeles called: I Like Scary Movies. Thus here I am doing my best Beetlejuice impression at it.

My impression is my interpretation of him naturally, and it works!

With the impending Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice coming September 6th 2024 I caught the original again (hadn't seen it since it first came out) and it surpiringly still holds up and is as entertaining as when I first viewed it.

So "Yes" I am now actually interested in seeing the follow-up. It looks like they took what worked in the original and expanded on it.

Until then go back and watch the original, it's still a whole lotta fun!

Hump Day & Chill

Today's secret Hump Day & Chill word is "Moist" Ahhhhhhhhh!

Remeber Pee Wee's Playhouse and his secret word of the day? If you know, you know. If you don't there's always Google.

While this word is obviously photo shopped on to an actual image of Pee Wee holding one of the actual words of the day (imagine if he ever used "Moist" on the air???) it is a word that may as well have been featured on the show.

Those of us who viewed it wseekly knew that while kids watched it for the bright colors, silliness and cast of off the wall characters the content was 100% Adult and was designed to fly above younger viewers heads. That was part of the fun of watching it as an adult, right? Of course it was!!!

So let's Hump Day & Chill and get "Moist" Ahhhhhhh!

Walking in LA...

In case you haven't read any of my posts that make reference to me living in Los Angeles, well that is where I reside. Hence the byline.

While walking in my hood one day I spotted this nailed to a tree. A cross and garlic mean only one thing to me - there are vampires in my neighborhood, at least someone, somebody or many people believe so.

Now let's bear in mind that I have not encountered any of said creatures of the night to my knowledge. This being stated, if there are some that happen to be neighbors of mine please introduce yourselves I'd be interested in hanging out.

Are there vampires actually residing in LA? Always a possibility.

*June 2 @ Schoolkids Records (2237 Avent Ferry Rd. Suite 101, Raleigh, NC w/ moderator David Menconi (journalist, author Step It Up & Go and Oh, Didn’t They Ramble - Rounder Records and the Transformation of American Roots Music), 4pm event (No Cover), 8pm Cowboys in the Campfire ($25.00 tickets)

*June 3 @ Chilton House, Richmond, VA w/ moderator Mary Lucia (famed DJ), 7pm (SOLD OUT)

Additional dates pending at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Pop Montreal & more.

Since its release, Euphoric Recall has received glowing reviews from readers and media outlets: NPR, Uncut (UK), Mojo (UK), PopMatters, Houston Chronicle, Spill, and Rhythms Magazine (AU). Additionally, musicians such as Jody Stephens (Big Star), Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) have praised the book for its behind-the-scenes tales; for Jesperson’s music-obsessed background, his own experiences living a rock-n-roll life, and evangelizing & supporting artists he believed in. The twelve book events in various cities so far have all been packed and audience response has been immensely gratifying.

A passionate music lover since childhood, Peter Jesperson found his way into the Minneapolis music world just as it was blossoming in the 1970s and ‘80s. While also managing the influential Oar Folkjokeopus record store and DJing at Jay’s Longhorn bar, Jesperson cofounded Twin/Tone Records, which launched such groundbreaking artists as the Replacements, Soul Asylum, The Suburbs, Babes In Toyland, the Jayhawks, and many more. By the early ‘80s Jesperson made the discovery that changed his life: the Replacements. As A&R man and manager, he guided this talented and out-of-control foursome, taking a short break to road-manage an upcoming sensation out of Athens, Georgia: R.E.M. But as his career was on the rise, Jesperson began his own descent into substance abuse.

Motivated by his love of music, Jesperson rallied and made his way to Los Angeles for the next phase of his career. While working with New West Records alongside artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Kris Kristofferson, Vic Chesnutt, and Steve Earle, Jesperson experienced firsthand the dramatic changes in the music industry of the 1990s. After a half century in the music business, Jesperson shares insights, anecdotes, and lessons from his unique vantage point. The book features a forward by noted music journalist & Sirius XM DJ David Fricke.

“An entertaining collection of stories from a rock and roll life, and an astute study of music and music lovers. Peter Jesperson takes us on an amazing journey through record-store counters, band vans, backstages, label offices, and late night record-listening sessions. Throughout, his love for the performers and songs that sent him down this path shine through, illuminating and inspiring,” said Craig Finn, The Hold Steady.

Back In Time

Batman & Wonder Woman

This image came up as a Facebook Memory and I wanted to post it here, so I am.

It was a typical Thursday, May 25th 2017 to be exact, as I headed to Trader Joe's on Vine in Hollywood.

Nothing shocking other than I was completely unaware that the premiere for Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot was happening on Hollywood Blvd. at the Pantages on this day.

Luckily I grocery shop when the Trader Joe's opens (it opened at 8 am, now it opens at 9) because the throngs of fans that showed up eventually were not there just yet.

However there was this dynamic early duo of fans dressed as Wonder Woman and Batman.

I just had to get a photo, and it turned out great! So great that I wanted to share it and it brings back a memory from a less shall we say, altered time and place in the world.

Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!

The Merry, Merry Month Of May...

Justify This!
Madonna

"Hey, they say that a stitch in time saves nine, They say I better stop or I'll go blind" - She Bop, Cyndi Lauper

Tis the Merry, Merry Month Of May! Do you know why it's so merry? Well I'll give you some hints. Cyndi Lauper is singing about it in the her song She Bop (think about the lyrics above, but not too much)

Madonna has simulated it in concert and in the image above. "Yes" May is a month long worldwide celebration of the big "M"

Now I'm not going to expand on what the big "M" is. Not because I am uncomfortable saying it, because it's more fun to be somewhat subtle and cryptic.

In case you still don't get it, here is a link to Planned Parenthood below to spell it out for you...

"In pink, goes with everything" - Pink, Lizzo from the Barbie Movie

While I know the Barbie Movie is so last summer, I came across this photo of me in pink looking pretty in it and felt like it was the Summer of 2023 all over again! Too bad it isn't. That was a good time!

Hey remember we will always have Barbie and...pink!!!

Sunday Funday

Double Scooby
Scooby Doo & Matthew Lillard

OK, here we have Matthew Lillard on what looks to be a photo from the set of one of the Scooby Doo movies where he portrayed Shaggy.

I've never seen either of them, but it appears Lillard as Shaggy is disguised as his faithful buddy Scooby. For those in the know feel free to send me any correct information you feel you'd like to share.

In the meantime does this mean Matthew ate a Scooby Snack as well?! Did he speak in Scooby's funny woice? Why is he dressed to the nine's as Mr. Doo?

If you don't have the 411 like myself, draw your own conclusions and have a Sunday Funday on yours truly!

"Still don't know what I was waitin' for, And my time was runnin' wild"  Chages, David Bowie

This memory of myself and Brittney spending her last night in Los Angeles five years ago at Musso and Frank came up in my Facebook Memories. It made me think about changes and time. Those are two things that always will be.

So many changes in such a short amount of time these past five years, and you know what there's even more to come...

Your crown has been bought and paid for. Put it on and wear it on your head, damn it!!!

Hump Day & Chill

David Byrne

The Talking Heads are one of my favorite groups evuh! Their concert film Stop Making Sesnse is pure magic!

When I was in college up near Seattle a group of us from the drama department used to frequent midnight screenings of it at the Egyptian Theater there. Translation: We would get drunk and dance our asses off in front of the movie screen.

Thus in honor of this very fond memory we are going to Hump Day & Chill to what Talking Heads frontman David Byrne (above) says.

Double Vision

Mother & Daughter
Zoe Kravitz & Lisa Bonet

"Fill my eyes with that double vision, no disguise for that double vision" Double Vision, Foreigner

Seeing double right here, right now??? Thinking you are seeing twin sisters? Well no, not really. Here is the Mother and Daughter team of Zoe Kravitz and Lisa Bonet.

Could two women be any more beautiful? I ask you? Clearly Zoe scored the gene jackpot with Lisa as her Mom and Lenny Kravitz as her Father.

Lisa has always been a favorite of mine. She is not only gorgeous, she is talented and she does her. There is an amazing power in that. Lisa was the best thing about Angel Heart FYI.

Zoe is equally stunning and talented. Out of all the Batman movies she is my favorite Catwoman. Why? Because her portrayal nailed the character that I read in the Batman comic books when I was growing up to perfection!!!

Have a beautiful day! After this double vision how could you not???

Behind The Scenes

Here we are another Monday another work week! Thus I thought for no specific reason I'd share this Behind The Scenes photo of Martin Scorsese & Sharon Stone staight off of the set of Casino!

For the record Casino is one of my favorite Scorsese films. Sharon Stone was spectacular in it and got a rightfully deserved Academy Award Nomination for her portrayal of Ginger McKenna.

It's also a plus that this awesome photo is in evocative black and white.

There's really not much else I can add to this regarding said photo except, have a great week and hope you enjoyed the view.

Danny Will Die Alone

Dekkoo, the premiere streaming service dedicated to gay men, will launch its new original series, Danny Will Die Alone, on May 16, 2024.  Created by and starring Jack Tracy, Danny Will Die Alone dives deep into the hellscape of being a single gay man today trying to find love via the hookup apps.  Loosely based onJack Tracy’s own dating life in New York City and his “Dying Alone Together” podcastthe series depicts Tracy as Danny: a man on a mission.  Recently single after a devastating breakup and freshly entering a mid-life crisis, Danny finds the dating scene markedly different from the last time he was on the market.  Emotional unavailability, fear of commitment and hypersexuality abound and Danny is forced to navigate his way through unhinged flakes, fakes, and bots, all while remaining blissfully unaware of his own multitude of flaws.  Danny Will Die Alone will begin streaming Thursday, May 16 on Dekkoo.

In addition to its jaw-droppingly vulgar humor, Danny Will Die Alone presents a critical look at modern dating and its shifting relationship styles.  It explores how gay men use the apps, treat one another, and the differences in their behavior when interacting virtually and in-person.  “On the apps, you're never quite sure if the man you are speaking with is looking for something real or if he simply enjoys the chase,” Tracy explains.

He notes there is a huge emphasis on casual sex encounters today.  “It’s as if long term relationships and traditional dating structures have been abandoned by men in their 20s and 30s,” Tracy continues.  “Once you get into the 40s, it’s a whole other macrocosm of messiness; mostly married couples who have opened their relationships and are looking for a temporary third to complete their throuple.”

Initially built as a web series, the first nine episodes of Danny Will Die Alone are fifteen-minute affairs, each focusing solely on Danny’s encounter with a man that represents a particular corner of the gay dating world.  Characters pop into Danny’s life only to never be heard from again, no different than how it goes while dating in the modern era.

It begins with Danny attempting to convert a well-endowed hookup into a forever partner.  After that fails, he meets hipsters, conservatives, spiritual beings, gym gurus, and men with all kinds of kinky sexual proclivities.  All the while, Danny breaks the fourth wall to regularly let viewers know what he’s thinking about during the ongoing car crashes.  “It's a way to bring the audience into Danny's issues,” Jack explains.  “The viewers become the confidant Danny vents to.”

Viewers may sympathize with Danny, but not too much, because Danny is jaded to the point of near insanity, and is as awful as the situations he finds himself in.  Like when he realizes the apps have become the land of unwanted bottoms and he enters his “top era”, or when it dawns on him that the apps simply aren’t ‘appening, and he hires a professional matchmaker.

It's nonstop hilarity at Danny’s increasingly desperate antics as he futilely searches for his one true love.

Jack Tracy is a New York based writer, actor, producer, and recording artist.  He has released three LPs, numerous EPs, and is best known for his feature film Snowflake, and his web series HistoryBig Law and Millennial Memoir.  Danny Will Die Alone is his first Dekkoo original series.  When not working on his latest creation, Jack spends time with his cocker spaniel and, like Danny, continues his search for love.

Season two of Danny Will Die Alone is filming now.  It will shift to six full half hour episodes with a continuing storyline and additional lead cast members.

Danny Will Die Alone begins streaming May 16 on Dekkoo.
