I Decided I'm Fine: A Roach Play

The Attic Collective Presents
I Decided I’m Fine: A Roach Play
Directed by Rosie Glen-Lambert
Exploring Hoarding, an American Phenomenon,
Often Stigmatized but Rarely Discussed
February 7 through March 1, 2020

The Attic Collective is bringing its unique blend of whimsy, clowning and magical realism to Los Angeles audiences this February with its production of I Decided I’m Fine: A Roach Play directed by Rosie Glen-Lambert. Written by The Attic Collective’s literary manager Veronica Tjioe and the company’s artistic director, Glen-Lambert, the play addresses hoarding, an American phenomenon, which is often stigmatized but rarely discussed. Opening on Friday, February 7th, the production will run for four weekends at Studio/Stage in the greater Hollywood area, closing on Sunday, March 1, 2020. I Decided I’m Fine: A Roach Play will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. On Fridays and Saturdays the show will commence at 8:00pm, and on Sundays at 6:00pm. Tickets cost $25 for general admission and $35 for VIP tickets that include preferential, central seating and one free drink at the bar. The theater is located at 520 N. Western Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90004. For more information, please visit The Attic Collective’s site at https://www.theatticcollectivela.com/roachplay.

SYNOPSIS:
When does clutter become a problem, and whose problem does it become?
I Decided I’m Fine: A Roach Play addresses hoarding, an American phenomenon which is often stigmatized but rarely discussed. After the sudden death of the their infant child, Ellen and Stephen find themselves faced with the difficult task of moving on from the objects that remind them of the incident. For Ellen, this proves to be too overwhelming of a task, leading to years of compulsive accumulation. Juxtaposed with the play’s realism is a second layer of the play which utilizes clowning, comedy, and a cockroach musical to steer the audience through the many different ways hoarding is perceived and portrayed in society.

The Roach Play cast features Sutton ArabeBrandon BlumTyler BremerMeg CashelKat DeVoe-PetersonJulia FinchHailey McAfeeLuke MedinaConor MurphyBart Tangredi and Veronica Tjioe. Rosie Glen-Lambert directs, the set is designed by Lex Gernon, costumes and props by Rebecca Carr, lighting design by Joey Guthman, sound design by James Ferrero  and makeup design by Mallory McAfee. The technical director is Austin Kottkamp, the stage manager is Angel Hernandez and graphic design is by Sunil Hall.

This version of I Decided I’m Fine: A Roach Play is a revamped adaptation of a piece originally devised by The Attic Collective that was presented at Son of Semele in August 2018. Since this initial production, the company worked collaboratively to rework the script through a series of workshops, which included improvisation and detailed research. Tjioe and Glen-Lambert incorporated these discoveries into the script, and this new production features significant changes from the first staging.

In 2019, the company’s successful run of The Last Croissant at the Hollywood Fringe Festival received numerous accolades, including the coveted “Top of the Fringe” award and the award for “Best Ensemble.” The show also received the “Best of the Broadwater” award, leading to an extended final performance to a sold-out house. The company also received nominations for the Steve Kent Award for inspiring political or social change and the Larry Cornwall Award for outstanding music in a play.

Film Buff Friday: Man Of A Thousand Faces

A thousand faces?! Wow! Most people only have two...

One screen legend pays homage to another in Man of a Thousand Faces, an enthralling biopic which sees Oscar-winning tough guy James Cagney give a multifaceted portrayal of silent cinema legend Lon Chaney. In early horror classics such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of The Opera, Lon Chaney captivated audiences with his vivid personifications of grotesque and afflicted characters. His extraordinary make-up skills, and miraculous ability to completely transform into grisly yet sympathetic and tragic monsters, garnered him international acclaim and the famous moniker of this film's title. Yet, despite his talent and success, Chaney led a life plagued by hardship and heartache. This insightful film-portrait traces the trajectory of the actor's career: from impoverished vaudeville clown to Hollywood stardom, whilst also capturing the drama that surrounded his private life. The film is presented here for the first time in dazzling High Definition, with a selection of revealing extras.

Bonus Materials

  • Brand new restoration from the original negative by Arrow Films
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
  • Uncompressed Mono 1.0 PCM audio soundtrack
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • New audio commentary by film scholar Tim Lucas
  • The Man Behind a Thousand Faces, a newly filmed look at Lon Chaney and his legacy by the critic Kim Newman

Just Because...Brad Pitt

Once Upon A Time...
Brad Pitt
Just Because he's at the premiere in Mexico City. Just Because I loved Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood & Just Because It's Brad, bitch. Here he is the man of the moment Brad Pitt!

While Brad has never had that Schwing factor for me, there is no denying he is one good looking man. Not to mention one good actor as well...

In fact if I were a betting man, which I am not (seriously I'm not) I would venture to place my money on Mr. Pitt finally nabbing an Oscar for his role of stuntman and possible felon Cliff Booth in Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood

Brad is perfection in the film. It's showcases his acting chops and is a good old fashioned Movie Star type turn to boot.

If you have yet to catch Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood, what are you waiting for?! Seriously, what???

Monday Motivation

Call Me, Maybe
Carly Rae Jepsen
See Carly Rae Jepsen on stage in Atlanta, GA. Hear Carly sing during her "Dedicated" tour. Get so high you touch the sky

Looking at this photo of Carly on her current tour (mentioned above) inspired me to throw out this bit of Monday Motivation wisdom. Today is the first day for you try new things. Why you may ask am I making Carly Rae Jepsen the poster child for this? Glad you asked...

Once upon a time in Hollywood I was asked if I would like to attend her show at the Fonda (comped of course) - While being only familiar with her song Call Me Maybe, I hesitated then thought "Why the F#ck not? it's free"

Thus I came, I went, I heard and I saw. Guess what??? I was blown away! "Yes" CRJ is a great live performer and I would never have known that had I not gone because of a song, that was not something I hated, but definitely not my thing.

What's on your agenda to try that you haven't before today? Start small and work your way up to something grand.

Get out there and go for it, now!

One Night Only

Infinity Grove Entertainment and The Montalbán Present
Accidental Joy: A New Musical
A Dark Musical Comedy by Marcus Terrell Smith
And Composer Robbie McDonald
Saturday, June 29, 2019
The Montalbán is proud to partner with Infinity Grove Entertainment to present Los Angeles audiences with a special opportunity to experience an enhanced workshop production of Accidental Joy: A New Musical, coming to the theatre for one-night-only on Saturday, June 29, 2019. Book by Marcus Terrell Smith, music by Robbie McDonald, and lyrics by both, Accidental Joy is a dark comedy musical about one woman’s incredible journey to find the guru within, and the four or five hilarious murders that follow her along the way. Doors will open at 7:00pm and the performance will begin at 8:00pm on the Montalbán’s main stage (1615 Vine Street, Hollywood, CA 90028). Tickets range from $37 to $52. For tickets and more on this production, please call the box office at 323-461-6999 or visithttps://www.themontalban.com/accidentaljoy.
Accidental Joy: A New Musical – Synopsis:
Joy Perkins, a 40-year old disgruntled underachiever, has resigned herself to a life of regret and unfulfilled potential. But when world famous guru, Niev Lapel, comes to town, Joy is determined to take one final stab at getting what she deserves and becomes a guru herself. Laden with adult language and situations, catchy original songs, and four or five murders,Accidental Joy: A New Musical, is a third-eye opening dark comedy that speaks to the central role we play in forging our own destinies.

Accidental Joy was written as a singer’s musical,” explains writer and co-lyricist Smith, “where each song, though it propels the story forward, can stand alone. We really wanted to write something a musical theatre actor could really sink their teeth into and perform. We found an awe-inspiring array of amazing teammates to realize this such as actor Tyren Perry (Bustin’ Loose, Family Matters) and orchestrator/arranger Anthony Sabatino, along with a stellar band. Come one, come all, and be enlightened!”

Accidental Joy: A New Musical bloomed out of a fateful meeting between Smith and McDonald one night outside of an empty Los Angeles bar. Producer Linda Joe joined the dynamic team right after its sold-out “first look” event in April 2018. Since then, the trio has worked tirelessly to bring Accidental Joy’s message of self-confidence and a belief in one's self to life. This new musical is coming into its own with a glowing endorsement from the prestigious La Jolla Playhouse, it was an Official Selection at the 2018 New York Musical Festival and enjoyed a sold-out staged reading event at the Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles last October.

This year, The Montalbán, a theatre building a reputation as an early champion of new productions—helping to nurture shows for eventual tours and Broadway-bound engagements—became a fan and supportive friend. Together with the show's producers, Linda Joe and Marcus Terrell Smith, they are deviating from the standard theater development process. For one thing, presentations of new shows are usually done for small focus groups but Accidental Joy is changing the trend and inviting 1,000 theater goers to have direct involvement in the development of this unique show, which will employ minimal sets and costumes for this workshop production on the 29th.

As Joy Perkins likes to say, “You can’t go half-ass on fate. She needs both cheeks to sit on.”

Just Because...Justin Theroux

Riding On Bikes With Boys
Justin Theroux
Just Because he looks yummy in a sleeveless Britney Spears T-Shirt, Just Because his guns are a blazing and Just Because of his freeballing ways, here is Justin Theroux out and about on his bike in New York City.

I remember really noticing Justin for the first time when was oh so bad in the Charlie's Angels follow-up, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Justin was so hot being the sadistic criminal Seamus O'Grady who is the Ex of Dylan Sanders (Drew Barrymore) in the movie.

"Yes" he made my toes curl, and then some. I then remembered him from David Lynch's Mulholland Drive where he portrayed another lousy member of the male sex. You know the real portion, not the dream portion of this living Hollywood nightmare.

While he is a good actor, there is nothing like the many images of Justin freeballing on the WWW. He gives Jon Hamm a run for his money, ah Hell who am I kidding, I could never choose one or the other in this case, we'd have to compromise and go menage.

Thus I leave you Justin and his Theroux on this Sunday, June 2nd 2019.

Woot!

There's Got To Be A Morning After...

"There's got to be a morning after, If we can hold on through the night, We have a chance to find the sunshine, Let's keep on looking for the light" Theme from The Poseidon Adventure, Maureen McGovern

There does have to be a morning after and I'm not talking the pill...

That's correct minions it's the end of another three day weekend and boy do I feel it. How you may ask? Kind of like the S.S. Poseidon in The Poseidon Adventure, " Hell, Upside Down!"

While I won't go into specifics it isn't what you are surely thinking, I'm way too interesting for that pile.

Thus today I am leaving you with a photo of myself and one of the stars of  The Poseidon Adventure Pamela Sue Martin, taken at the 40th anniversary screening of it at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Right here, right now.

Enjoy your morning after kiddies!

At The Drive-In

I remember Drive-Ins...

From sleeping in the concession stand to working entirely for free, the quirky film fanatics at the struggling Mahoning Drive-in face uncertainty when Hollywood announces it will switch to digital projection for all new movies. Unable to purchase an expensive digital projector, the Mahoning gang pin their hopes of survival on showing only vintage 35mm film prints on their original 1949 projectors. Relive their underdog story to save film, the Mahoning Drive-in, and drive-in theaters everywhere.

"Technology moves so fast today, faster than ever before. As technology distracts us from one another and segments us further into smaller audiences, it was just magical to see a bunch of people gather together in rural Pennsylvania to watch film flicker through a projector from 1948," Alexander Monelli, director. "That's ultimately what this documentary is about."

At The Drive-in won "Best Local Feature" at the 26th annual Philadelphia Film Festival. It has also screened at multiple Alamo Drafthouses and at TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as an official selection of Dances With Films.

Immersive - Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists

Big Screen Perfection
Once upon a time in Hollywood, well OK, yesterday in Hollywood Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists Immersive Experience happened at The Hollywood Athletic Club.

Being a HUGE PLL fan you know I just had to go, and go I did! Upon entry I was surrounded with the atmosphere of the town of Beacon Heights and a big screen that eventually was cued up to show the first ten minutes of the pilot which premieres this Wednesday March 20th @ 8pm on Freeform.

All I have to say is I can not wait to see the whole thing. They did not waste anytime in diving right in and getting things going. The explanation as to how Mona and Allison end up in the same rural town is, well, dare I say it? Perfection, yep, I said it.

The rest? Well I've got a secret and I'm gonna keep it...enjoy some of the PLL experience with me, won't you? Shhhhhhhhh....
