Monday Motivation

Just Be
Jon Hamm
Yesterday I did something that I haven't in a long time, meditate. With a little bit of a cough and the sniffles I decided it was OK to take some down time and do the minimal things that I needed to without being anxious. "Yes" I cleared my head of all thoughts of what I "should be" doing and just was.

It was one of the best days ever! When you feel anxious, stuck in a rut or just plain over things, take a mental vacation. It takes strong discipline to do it, but if everyday could be like, not to mention feel like yesterday I would be on cloud nine, ten, eleven...

Thus meditation is Monday Motivation - I leave you with this now iconic image of Jon Hamm doing just that in the series finale of one of my favorite shows ever Mad Men. If you recall Hamm's character, Don Draper came up with the iconic Coke jingle during this zen moment....I'd like to teach the world to sing, indeed....

Now get to it, meditate peeps, Namaste!

Sunday Sinema: Waterworld

I actually went to the premiere of this at The Chinese Theater in Hollywood...
The most expensive film ever made at the time of its release, Waterworld has thrilled audiences through the years with its awe-inspiring action scenes, gargantuan maritime sets and ground-breaking special effects. A definitive post-apocalypse blockbuster, Waterworld stars Kevin Costner (The Untouchables) as The Mariner - a mutant trader, adrift in a dystopian future where Earth is submerged under water and humankind struggles to survive on boats and in ramshackle floating cities. The Mariner becomes embroiled with the Smokers, a gang of pirates who, led by villainous leader Deacon (Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet), are seeking Enola (Tina Majorino, Napoleon Dynamite), a girl with a map to the mythical realm of "Dryland" tattooed on her back. Famous for both its epic scale and the controversy that swirled around its production, Waterworld is a key cult film of the 1990s, and an essential entry into the subgenre of ecologically-minded blockbusters. Presented here in an exclusive new restoration, in three different cuts, and with a wealth of extra material, this high-water mark of high-concept Hollywood can now be enjoyed as never before.

Bonus Materials

  • New restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative by Arrow Films, presenting the film in three cuts
  • Original 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and 2.0 stereo audio options
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Six collector's postcards
  • Double-sided fold-out poster
  • Limited edition 60-page perfect-bound book featuring new writing on the film by David J. Moore and Daniel Griffith, archival articles and original reviews
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Paul Shipper
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the original theatrical cut
  • Maelstrom: The Odyssey of Waterworld, an all-new, feature-length making-of documentary including extensive cast and crew interviews and behind the scenes footage
  • Original archival featurette capturing the film's production
  • Global Warnings, film critic Glenn Kenny explores the subgenre of ecologically aware Hollywood blockbusters
  • Production and promotional stills gallery
  • Visual effects stills gallery
  • Original trailers and TV spots
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the extended US TV cut, which runs over 40 minutes longer than the theatrical cut
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the extended European 'Ulysses' cut, which includes censored shots and dialogue

Press Quotes

To say that this is a massive Blu-ray release, one that will surely give long-time fans reason to celebrate, is an understatement if ever there was one. Arrow Video's presentation exceeds all of my expectations and blows any home video release of the film completely out of the water. Highly recommended!

Just Because...A Star Is Acknowledged

Hugging It Out
l-r
Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott & Lady Gaga
Just Because, it gave me all the feels, Just Because, hand print ceremonies are fun! & Just Because Sam Elliott is one hot Daddy - "Yep" you guessed it, it's this group hug moment from Sam's hand print ceremony at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

Sam has had a long and steady career in Hollywood appearing in such films a Mask, The Big Lebowski & one of my personal favorites Lifeguard - Why you ask? Ummmmmm, Sam portrays a Lifeguard, meaning he is in swim trunks pretty much the whole movie. There that's why!

Thus being that he is great in a the supporting role of Bradley Cooper's older brother in one of the biggest films of the year A Star Is Born he was invited to make his prints immortal at the famous Chinese Theater in Hollywood along with other legends such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean & Elizabeth Taylor and many others.

"Yes" it is an "it's about time" moment for this veteran actor and a well deserved one.

Selene Luna: Pretty Special is a tragically funny standup comedy special showcasing Luna’s sharp-witted outspoken style that is bracingly honest and demystifies stereotypes against people with disabilities. Called “a polished spitfire” by The New York Times, Selene Luna shines a spotlight on the little woman who keeps going despite the cards this BIG world has stacked against her. Luna interweaves the polarizing political and social climate with a funny and inspiring message, from her being blessed by local neighborhood homeless, to her terrifying near-death experience while having sex on memory foam, to illegal immigration.

When asked about the entertainment industry’s exploitation of portraying little people as leprechauns, elves, fantasy creatures, Selene says, “As much as I begrudge some gigs I’ve had to do for survival, playing a Christmas elf can actually be a pretty good gig.  I’d rather be an overpaid holiday clown than look for a straight job.”

After several national tours as MARGARET CHO’s opening act, Selene is thrilled her fellow comic cohort is directing her special. Margaret on working with Selene: “She has been a part of my life in many different capacities, but she is awesome, she is hilarious, she’s beautiful and as an entertainer, she’s so incredibly diverse, you know, culturally.  She’s a little person, she’s so unique, she’s so amazingly adept at bringing her perspective to the stage.”

Selene Luna, fresh off her role as the voice of Tía Rosita in Disney-Pixar’s Academy Award & Golden Globe Awards' Winner COCOis an established presence in Hollywood with multiple roles in movies and TV shows such as Celebrity Wife Swap, Lionsgate’s My Bloody Valentine 3D, and Margaret Cho’s The Cho Show, the disabled Mexican-American actress has also broken ground as a featured burlesque dancer in five national tours of the undisputed Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese.  Luna’s most celebrated stand-up comedy credit has been opening for several of Margaret Cho’s national tours. Last year, Luna, successfully produced,DON'T LAUGH AT US! A "Special" Comedians Comedy Special, the first-ever standup comedy show featuring an all-disabled line-up.

Hump Day & Chill

I'm Sailing Away...
Gene Carter
When I was a young impressionable gay boy I remember being fascinated, no make that fixated on Playgirl Magazine. For the uninitiated Playgirl was a magazine featuring articles like Playboy, but unlike Playboy the nude photo spreads were of men, not women, showing the Full Monty.

I used to wonder about the guys who posed for those spreads. Who they really were and how they felt about the whole thing. Much to my delight while surfing Tye Briggs Favorite Hunks & Other Things I came across quite a few follow-up interviews with former Playgirl models who have bared it all for the world to enjoy.

One interview in particular caught my interest, I think it had a lot to do with the model being straight as many models for Playgirl were gay men. It is from a layout done in 1975 with a then nineteen year old Gene Carter.

Gene did the chat with Tye in January of 2011 - it is a fascinating piece on a man in his 50's looking back on getting naked for an international magazine

So it's time for a retro Hump Day & Chill minions, click on the link below and get to it!

She Won't Be Ignored! Glenn Close

Shock & Awe
Glenn Close & Lady Gaga
While I have no issue with Glenn Close winning the Golden Globe for The Wife, it was needless to say quite the surprise. Let's face it the whole show was one random all over the place affair. Not your usual Globe ceremony, I mean the worst reviewed film in the Best Motion Picture Drama category, Bohemian Rhapsody won.

It was truly surprising that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not crown Lady Gaga for her Movie Star making turn in A Star Is Born. She had the momentum and the film scored with audiences.

This being stated the win has sparked some entertaining memes & such, some of which I will share with you right here, right now. Of course Glenn Close uttering her famous line "I'm not going to be ignored, Dan" as Alex Forrest from Fatal Attraction is among them...Enjoy!
