Fashion! Turn To The Left!

We Are The Goon Squad
l-r Tyga, Kylie Jenner & Madonna
Fashion! Turn to the right! We are the goon squad and we're coming to town beep-beep!

When David Bowie sang the iconic song Fashion and mused about the mythical "goon squad" I am sure the threesome of  Tyga, Kylie Jenner & Madonna at the Philipp Plein Fall/Winter 2017 show, was what he had in mind, think about it, no too hard though.

Nothing other than New York Fashion Week could bring such strange bed fellows together in the name of couture.

The million dollar question of the day? Did the three actually engage in polite salutations and a photo-op, or did they actually have and interesting exchange of sound bites? If utterances did occur what could have possibly been said? I'd love to know, wouldn't you?

Whatever went down here is the "goon squad" to get you over the proverbial hump. Ciao!

The Horror: The Hunger

Catherine Deneuve & David Bowie

When I was sixteen it was a very good year. I landed my first job as a teenager ever, and it was my teen dream job. What was it? Working in a movie theater of course!

It was also the year, what would become my favorite vampire film ever came out, The Hunger. Since I worked there I got to see it for free, and that I did, five times!

Visually and conceptually it was stunning with graphic sexuality and vampire blood letting. Catherine Deneuve was born to play the ultimate ice queen vamp, Miriam Blaylock. David Bowie was the perfect compliment are her rapidly deteriorating decades old lover John Blaylock. Then there's Susan Sarandon as Dr. Sarah Roberts who thinks death is a disease that can be cured, little does she know....

With it's bold bi-sexuality, exploration of life & death and perfectly cast actors, this is one vampire fest blood sucking freaks should not miss!

Back To "Earth" - David Bowie

"You're face to face with the man who fell to earth"

It's really no secret I am a huge David Bowie fan, I mean fuck, he was my first concert ever! Well guess what's happening now? The Man Who Fell To Earth is turning the big 4-0 and getting a restoration...!!!

For those of you out of the loop it's a cult/indie/critically acclaimed piece of art in which Bowie portrays an alien on earth, thus it's title.

Because of Bowie I became a Nicolas Roeg fan. This film was unlike anything I had ever seen before, I can't even begin to describe all of my reactions to it in a few words, but as an impressionable fan of cinema and David Bowie, the passion I feel for this production is to the moon and back.

Of special interest to fans of Ziggy Stardust, the 40th Anniversary of the Sci-Fi opus will see the release of the soundtrack for the very first time, like a virgin.

The Man Who Fell to Earth arrives in theaters on September 9 and will be released on DVD/blu-ray on October 24.

Watch the trailer after the jump!

Memories: All Things Must Pass

My first job in Los Angeles was at the famed Tower Records on the Sunset Strip. I met so many celebrities there most notably the late great David Bowie. I also made a few friends along the way, hey Tammy Laub!

Established in 1960, Tower Records was once a retail powerhouse with 200 stores, in 30 countries, on five continents. From humble beginnings in a small-town drugstore, Tower Records eventually became the heart and soul of the music world, and a powerful force in the music industry. In 1999, Tower Records made an astounding $1 billion. In 2006, the company filed for bankruptcy. What went wrong? Everyone thinks they know what killed Tower Records: The Internet. But that's not the story.
Directed by Colin Hanks, and featuring music icons like Dave Grohl, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, All Things Must Pass is a feature documentary film examining this iconic company's explosive trajectory, tragic demise, and legacy forged by its rebellious founder Russ Solomon. For seven years, Hanks took on the documentary that lamented and celebrated the Sacramento-based record store that grew from his hometown into an American retail powerhouse.

"I remember buying 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was the informative record for me on my musical path, which I bought at Tower Records," he said.

Variety validated the efforts of Hanks saying the film was "soundly constructed, briskly paced and, in the end, affectingly wistful."

The DVD can be ordered now at the MVD Shop

Feel "So Alive" & Get "Stripped" With Daniel Ash

Here's something of note. Daniel Ash is back and Stripped on his bomb ass new album!

For over 35 years, Daniel Ash (Bauhaus, Tones On Tail, Love & Rockets) has been one of the seminal figures in alternative music; whether for his wildly experimental guitar playing or for his sardonic vocal stylings, or perhaps even for throwing in a bit of saxophone. Having defied categorization by fusing elements of electronica with punk, goth, and glam rock, Ash has earned the status of a living legend.

Stripped (Main Man Records) is Ash's first studio album since 2002. The album features all "re-takes" done in a style that resembles dub-step, variations of EDM, Atmospheric and Ambient "A-La Brian Eno Meets Bowie". Avid fans may recognize the songs but in reality they are at times completely different in a genetic recombination passing through a centrifuge

The biggest commercial hit by Love and Rockets was "So Alive" which in itself is a masterpiece. the record went to #3 on the Billboard Pop charts. Legendary producer of the original John Fryer was tapped for the new version of "So Alive" along with "Love Me" and the Bauhaus classic, "Slice Of Life."
                                                                Stripped

Stripped also features producer Mat Mitchell of Puscifer on the track "Christian Says" and Adam Bravin of She Wants Revenge on "OK This Is the Pops." Both classic songs are originally from Tones On Tail, the band born out of the ashes of Bauhaus and later became Love and Rockets.
Stripped also features the never released until now new song "Come On"

Grab Hold, It's The Grammy's!

Aladdin Sane x 2!
David Bowie & Lady Gaga
Happy Presidents Day! Which is doubling this year as Grammy Award day as well. Or as I like to call it The Lady Gaga David Bowie Tribute.
Since I really have no drive to write about award shows I went to my friends at E!Online and spied a write-up called "7 Things You Need To Know" about tonight's celebration.
I only found four of them worth re-printing, one of the things I did not include was about Kanye West. Send me Thank You notes later. Here are the Top 4 points of interest that I found worthwhile about music's biggest night! Source E!Online:
It's Me, Gwen Stefani
1. Music History: Just days after premiering her new single "Make Me Like You,"The Voice coach Gwen Stefani will collaborate with Target to produce a music video on live television. Set to air during a four-minute commercial break, the finished product will feature multiple sets and real-time costume changes as well as "special surprises for fans."
2. The Year of 1989: With seven impressive nominations for the evening, fans and critics alike believe Taylor Swift will walk away with an award before the night is over. But in even more good news, the "Shake It Off" singer is opening up the show with a top-secret performance. Now if only we knew if boyfriend Calvin Harris was coming too.
3. Honoring a Legend: Just a few weeks after the passing of David Bowie, the Grammys will pay tribute to the "Modern Love" singer with the help of the one and only Lady Gaga. After slaying the National Anthem at last weekend's Super Bowl, Mother Monster will perform an "experiential" tribute for late rock star, who will also be receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. "We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year's show, but when David passed—almost in a single moment—we knew we had to change direction," Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich said in a statement. "We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honor David. She's perfect for it."
4. Hello Superstar: While she may not be nominated this year—don't worry, there's an explanation whyAdele is still expected to attend the show where she will deliver a performance that may just be a tease to her upcoming tour across the country. For all those fans who couldn't score their tickets to the concert in your neck of woods, this may just be your lucky night.

It's A Gaga, Gaga, Gaga World!

It's My World, Enjoy!
Lady Gaga
Not only did February bring hope of an early spring courtesy of a groundhog, it also brings us a world ruled by Lady Gaga. Yeah, I know there are some of you who think that is a year round thing. I am skeptical on that one, but, I will give the tip of the hat to her, Tony Bennett style for the second month of 2016.

So gather round peeps and get the 411 on the two huge reasons Gaga owns your ass for February....

First off the mother of all monsters will perform an "Experimental" tribute to David Bowie at the 2016 Grammy Awards on February 15th. Normally this show falls under AAAC (avoid at all costs,)

But this is inspired perfection! After all what has Gaga's career been other than one big tribute to one of the Gods of rock?

Lapping up the momentum of this blessed announcement comes another Gaga bon mot. She is officially singing the National Anthem at Superbowl 50 this Sunday! Marlee Matlin will be signing it alongside her.

Wow! This is going to be some opener to the football's biggest day. The Lady has proven she has the chops to score a touchdown with this, and while I doubt she will veer to far from a traditional delivery of such a revered song, I bet we will get some Gaga flourishes and she will make the performance all hers.

For sure she will not forget the lyrics.

Getting Random With Will Bethencourt

Will, or Willy?
Will Bethencourt
Actor/Producer Will Bethencourt is making his Vegas debut this weekend in Puppetry of the Penis at Harry Mohney's Erotic Heritage Museum. You read that correctly, Will is going to delve into the justified and ancient art of penis origami for your viewing pleasure. Sharing is caring after all.

Lucky us, Will is not shy about getting naked for an audience. I first saw him in a production of Richard Greenberg's Pulitzer Prize winning play, the baseball drama, Take Me Out. He gave a really good performance as Kippy Sunderstrom, and, yes he was naked too.

Will also served as Producer on the upcoming movie The Happys starring Janeane Garofalo. I asked Mr. Bethencourt to give a response to ten random things I threw at him on the weekend of his full frontal Vegas extravaganza! Here they are, and here are his responses!
Let's Get Animal
Photo: Spiffy Cliffy Photography
1) Vegas: Is Cirque du Soleil ever gonna do a Madonna tribute show?
2) Flexible: Makes it easier.
3) Bears: Yes, please.
4) Flying Purple People Eaters: They just wanna rock! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
5) David Bowie: "Life is a pop of the cherry when you're a boy..."
6) Penis: ...rules the world.
7) Lasso: Apso
8) Puppetry: Remember when Pinocchio goes to Pleasure Island? Where can I buy a ticket?
9) Length: About 50 minutes?
10) Full Frontal Nudity: Instead of guns and religion = Utopia!

Thanks for playing with me Will and break a...ummmmmmm, best wishes this weekend!

David Bowie Was My First

On Of The True Greats
David Bowie

So saddened to hear the news that one of the biggest influences in my life on many levels, David Bowie has passed away due to cancer.

Dear David,

This is an open letter to you to list the numerous ways you have impacted my life throughout the years.

My first exposure to you musically was the Ziggy Stardust personae and album. I was mesmerized by it. Favorite song: Suffragette City. I heard the album years before I owned it via a friend of my parents teenage son, yeah I was a mere kid then.

The first album I owned by you? Let's Dance. Favorite song? China Girl

"Yes" David you were my first. My first major rock show ever! The Tubes opened for you at the Tacoma Dome in Washington State. I will never forget the amazing show you gave a combination of theatricality and brilliant music! Oh, you were also another first for me. My first Rock God crush, yeah I thought you were sexy a fuck!

I met you when I worked at Tower Records Sunset. You were to only star I ever met that I was actually nervous about saying "Hello" to. I remember grabbing a vinyl LP copy of the Tin Machine album for you to sign, when myself and the other employees brought our things to the register, you were so gracious and kind. You signed everyone's treasure with true class. When we expressed our awe of you with regard to the legend you were your response was: "Oh please, I'm no big deal."

I managed to see you in concert a total of four times, each one a religious experience.

You can never completely know the total depth of the impact you had on my life as a young gay man. But I will leave you with this. You made it easier, seeing someone out there who dared to be different, an innovator and mostly dared to be himself.

R.I.P. Thin White Duke

The Halloween Five

Satan In Disguise -
Michael Shinafelt

"Happy, Happy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween. Happy, Happy Halloween, Silver Shamrock!"

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a quite underrated movie. John Carpenter and Debra Hill were approached by Universal to do a third Halloween film after the studio picked up the sequel to the indie smash Halloween.

Their plan? To do a franchise under the Halloween banner every year, with a different theme. Turns out the public demanded and only had love for Michael Myers. Gotta give those two credit though for trying to be innovative and fun!

Which brings me to the theme of this year's Season of the Witch post. I am going to give you five of my favorite fright films, in no particular order, with the exception of number one. I bet you already know what that is...
Halloween
Always Number 1!
1) Halloween - This is my one and only when it comes to sheer horror. I can not count how many times I have seen it and how much I love it! It was the first horror film my Father took me to, and it scared the shit out of me. It is still under my skin to this day, even though I know what's coming. Jamie Lee Curtis rules!

2) Excision - Teen angst, domineering mothers, delusional aspirations of being a world class surgeon.
This psychological gore fest is a brilliant feature debut from Director/Writer Richard Bates, Jr. It also features two great performances from AnnaLynne McCord and Traci Lords.

3) Psycho - Like mother like daughter. Janet Leigh shocked the world of cinema by appearing in Alfred Hithcock's then explicit and never seen nothing like it thriller Psycho. Janet as you may or may not know was the mother of future Scream Queen and Halloween star, Jamie Lee Curtis. This movie still holds up today as a master class in film making and what an intelligent slasher film could and should be.
4) The Hunger - was anything sexier than Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie slashing their prey's throats with an ankh and drinking their blood at the height of orgasm? Well, one more thing in this awesome vampire flick was, the sex scene between Deneuve turning Susan Sarandon into her latest immortal fling. Tony Scott's best.

5) Cat People - No, not the original in 1942. That one I never saw the big deal about. But the re-imagining of it by auteur Paul Schrader. While the film is more of an erotic fantasy. It is peppered with enough horror elements and violence to really set it above the cut. With Malcom McDowell at his freaky best and Nastassja Kinski doing what she does best...meow, sex kitten.

While these are not the only Holiday Flicks I love, they are the cream of the crop to me. With John Carpenter's Halloween always remaining #1 in my blackened heart.

Happy Halloween! Until next year...

American Horror Story: Hotel - Discuss

Werd!
Let's face it every season of American Horror Story divides fans of the genre pro and con. But they keep coming back for more? Why? Because no matter what your opinion on the individual seasons AHS captures something that gets under every horror fans skin on some level.

This season the divide seems to be a little larger in terms of pro and con. After all the shows anchor from the very beginning, acclaimed actress Jessica Lange exited after four seasons. Two of them good, one of them OK and another one tragic. Who took her place? Why none other than the multi-talented pop icon Lady Gaga - now that's diversity!

So I decided to enlist my niece and fellow horror fanatic, Kelly Waters to discuss what she thinks of season five "Hotel" - time to check in, Kelly!

MS: Before we start what's your favorite horror movie off the top of your head?

KW: Well, by far my favorite is John Carpenter's "Halloween," I've seen it millions of times.

MS: It's mine too! I watch it every year.

KW: Yeah, I watch it every year and all year long. I never get tired of it!

My Niece & Partner In Crime
Kelly Waters
MS: So, let's talk "American Horror Story: Hotel" - I'm really liking it!

KW: I fricking love it! It's dirty, raunchy...It's probably a little much for cable television, but I love that! Oh My God, seriously like the metal dildo, whoooooa?! My butt cringed!

MS: Well I didn't find it shocking, you expect AHS to push the envelope, but I thought: ouch!

KW: Yeah, it's like, wow, ok, we're taking it to that level.

MS: A lot of people were upset about Jessica Lange leaving. Personally I was actually excited, I felt it would take the show to a whole new level.

KW: Yes, I agree. I love her though.

MS: So, do I but Ryan Murphy always built the show around Jessica, and now he built it around Lady Gaga. It's raunchy, glamorous and over the top gory. Yeah, I like her in it!

KW: I was really shocked about how good she turned out to be. Because I was really unsure. It was like Oooooh, I don't know...I'm not like the biggest Lady Gaga fan, but I don't hate her by any means. She has definitely surpassed my expectations.

MS: You saw "The Hunger" didn't you?

KW: Uh, no I didn't

MS:  Lady Gaga and Matt Bomer were modeled after the Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie characters in it. We all know there is nothing new in the world and that people borrow from everything. There is nothing wrong with that.

KW: Right.

MS: Just put your own spin on it.

KW: Exactly!

MS: There's nothing new anymore, get over it!

KW: No, there is nothing original these days.

MS: Do you have a crush on Matt Bomer? I do.

KW: Oh yes, he is so cute!
What Are You Going To Do?
Lady Gaga & Matt Bomer

MS: Every year AHS always goes many places that are taboo. This year to me it is The Countess feeding her stable of children so she in turn can drink their blood. How do you feel about that as a Mother?

KW: Because this season is focused on vampires, it certainly didn't shock me. The fact that they are hooked up to to the machines and aren't being bled to death, did not really bother me. The machines to me made that disconnect, it wasn't like she was sitting there  feeding directly off of them. That would most likely make me a little more queasy. Or if she was tearing their heads off or something. But the way it is portrayed it doesn't really have the disturbing feeling for me. Now that I am a Mom I am pretty sensitive to that.

MS: So the verdict is we are both loving this season of AHS.

KW: Yes, definitely!

Say AHS three times in a mirror and see what happens at:

Friday, Bloody Friday...

"It's Not The Getting Ready, It's The Clean Up"
Lady Gaga & Matt Bomer
I don't know about you, but after the Wednesday premiere of American Horror Story: Hotel my appetite for all things bloody has spiked.

Vampire type things really hit me where I live as I always wanted to be one when I was a young lad. Yep, it's true!

And nothing beats an orgy that ends in blood lust I always say. That's one of those reasons vampires will always be cooler than us mere mortals.

So I am leaving you with the image of Lady Gaga and Matt Bomer with their blood soaked victims post orgasm for the weekend.

Yes, Gaga and Bomer paid tribute to the the great vampire film The Hunger, by channeling their inner Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie, and I loved it!

I can't wait for next week's episode...bring it, I want more!

AHS: Life On Mars

Hello, I'm The Gates Of Hell
OK, American Horror Story: Freak Show has officially premiered, and it confirms the David Bowie song Jessica Lange belts out under the big top: Yes, Virginia, there is Life On Mars.

Rather than re-cap something that you can, and or, already have seen. Why don't I tease you with some non-spoiler items of what wicked things are to come.

Twisty the Clown Lives Up To His Name: "Twisty" you know the homicidal clown who's running around getting his kicks killing people? This week you'll get to see his real face and apparently it is even more gruesome than the mouth mask, that must be one disgusting mug!

A Creature With a Foot Penis Is Cumming: No need to extrapolate.

The Most Bizarre Love Triangle Ever Is on the Way: Siamese Twins Bette and Dot Tattler, played by Sarah Paulson do not have the same feelings for Jimmy "Lobster Boy" Darling, played by Evan Peters. Since Bette and Dot both share the same reproductive organ, that should prove interesting.

I Spy A Two-Faced Man: Episodes three and four are the Halloween episodes and they are all about the legend of Edward Mordrake (played by Wes Bentley). "He supposedly was born with a face on the back of his head and the face on the back of his head would whisper things," Says American Horror Story Producer & Creator Ryan Murphy. "Carneys usually took Halloween off because they believed if they didn't, their music would summon Mordrake and he would take one of them to hell." Sounds like an awesome vacation, hey Edward, take me!

Huston Huddleston Invades Hollywood

A spaceship is landing in Hollywood, CA, estimated time of arrival 2015, it's The Hollywood Science Fiction Museum which recently met it's start up goal and then some with a Kickstarter campaign.

Their Mission:  The mission of New Starship Foundation and the Hollywood Science Fiction Museum is to inspire people of all ages and nationalities with an uplifting vision of the future found in science fiction media, art and literature by teaching Real Science through Science Fiction, including technology, ecology, engineering, computers, robotics, math, medicine, space travel and all aspects of filmmaking through fun, interactive exhibits and programs.

Here to tell us more about this alien invasion is the CEO of the museum, give a great big "Live Long And Prosper" to Huston Huddleston!

MS: Huston tell us what inspired your alien invasion of Hollywood.

HH: One thing lead to another. It started because I saved the Enterprise Bridge (from Star Trek) that was a display tour set that was made for Paramount in the late 90's. I did a Kickstarter, I got a bunch of people associated with Star Trek to support me then we got to a point where A) We didn't have enough money to complete the restoration B) We didn't have a place to set it up, where would we store it? The biggest problem I had with the companies I was approaching for donations was that none of them cared specifically about the bridge itself, they weren't Star Trek fans, which is understandable. We needed to create a bigger picture, there is no exclusive science fiction museum anywhere in the world, and certainly none in Hollywood. So we are creating our own, it was the only logical conclusion.

MS: So, what is going to set your museum apart from others?

HH: Our museum will be so universal, and so exciting it will have the fun of a theme park inside of a museum. I think we will get the numbers of people coming, and hopefully break records as far as museums go.

MS: It would be so dry otherwise.

HH: We are making it fun which is something museums normally don't do.

MS: You also have fantasy and horror along with the science fiction.

HH: Some people actually complained to us that Herbie The Love Bug and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang can't be in the museum because it is a science fiction museum not a science fantasy museum and I'm like: "Why the Hell not?" The joy that people will get from seeing these will be way overcome by the people who are complaining about them.

It's Huston!
MS: Hey Huston, time for some fun! I picked five random sci-fi, fantasy TV and Movie titles and want you to say what comes to mind, ready.

HH: Sure, let's go.

MS: Planet of the Apes

HH: Pivotal film. Rod Serling wrote the screenplay, that's why it had so much apocalyptic insight. The film was unique and a major watermark.

MS: Bionic Woman

HH: Kenneth Johnson (creator of the show) has been supportive of our museum. That show is the first female superhero who wasn't treated campy, and could actually be a woman and not a cartoon character. She could be soft and feminine and kick butt! It was ground breaking.

MS: X-Men

HH: Stan Lee is a huge hero of mine. As far as the film it was one of the first to treat the situation as 100% real. X-Men brought the superhero movie to a whole new level of realism and the series just keeps getting better and better, and you have the integrity of some amazing actors and a director.

MS: Labyrinth

HH: It's unique, it's a musical. David Bowie is a very underrated actor, I wished he'd do more. Jennifer Connelly is beautiful. I think it was Jim Henson's way of making something more mainstream since Dark Crystal didn't do well, he took the technology and made it more commercial.

MS: Star Trek

HH: Never heard of it (laughs) It was a groundbreaking TV Show, in too many ways to even mention. It has single handily inspired more astronauts and scientists I think than any entity. Every NASA person I have met says Star Trek is the show that inspired them.

Southern California's Pop-punk trio, Eve 6, are most well-known for hit singles "Inside Out" and "Think Twice" from their 1998 debut self-titled album, and their prom-MTV anthem, "Here’s To The Night" off of 2000's Horoscope.  Eve 6 exploded onto the mainstream with RCA records before they were of legal drinking age, but called it quits in 2004 shortly after their success.

Eve 6 reunited in 2012, and released Speak in Code through Fearless Records. The band’s lineup remains the same; Max Collins (vocals & bass),Jon Siebels (Guitar), and Tony Fagenson (drums). After their eight year hiatus, Eve 6 returned to the music scene more energized than ever before. Frontman, Max Collins, states that Speak in Code is the strongest collection of songs they've had on one record.

SPACEHOG (http://www.spacehog.com/)
Formed in 1994 during the peak of grunge-rock, Spacehog came out with a more unique sound than what was popular in rock music.  Their debut album Resident Alien was heavily influenced by artists such as T.Rex, Iggy Pop, Queen, and David Bowie and The Spiders. On top of their "glam-rock" sound, they added some distorted guitars to create their own individual sound. The result: over a million copies sold, the number one single "In the Meantime" and a completely unique identity.

After two more successful albums, and some time apart, Spacehog is together again using their separate musical journeys as inspiration in writing original material. The band once again released an album produced by Bryce Goggin in 2013 entitled As It Is On Earth, which is now available.
