What's On My Mind?
Michael Shinafelt
I am on "Real Housewife" overload this morning. "Yes" minions I have a standing date with my friend Naama every Wednesday eve she comes over to my pad and we watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills that I DVR'd from the night before, then we watch The Real Housewives of New York in real time.

Always one of the highlights of my week as we have a total blast commenting, reacting not to mention interacting with the shows. For the record we both prefer NY over BH, yet enjoy them both, in case you cared.

Current Mood: Happy Birthday America!

Why Don't You Come Up & See Me Sometime...
Stephen Colbert
While I am really not sure what to say about America's 242nd Birthday I do know that the above image of one Stephen Colbert perfectly sums up my Current Mood.

I'm not going to spill on my true thoughts and feelings about the state of our union because my Mama always said "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Yeah, I know that has never really stopped me, but I would like today to be positive and productive

How am I celebrating? Well last night I went to a Rooftop Screening of the Billy Wilder classic Sunset Blvd. @ The Montalban Theater in Hollywood. With my friends Brittney & Naama.

We had a total blast and "yes" we could see fireworks going on in the surrounding area from the roof with a view.

Thus I leave you with a photo of the three of us, oh and don't forget to boogie in the butt, it's the fourth of July after all!

On Thursdays We Wear Blue Plaid Sleeveless Shirts
Michael Shinafelt
This has been a monster of a week, my schedule has been so hectic that I am going to take a vacation and pack the bags under my eyes. Kidding, maybe, or perhaps not.

Luckily this means I am cutting to the chase, I'm going to do it and do it now!!!

Barry Manilow officially comes out. Whatever, queen please.

Is Kendall Jenner at a protest or a swap meet? I can't tell...

Personally I hate episodes of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills where they are eating caviar. Yes, I am jealous the hunger is real.

Don't call me a c#nt, I lack that kind of depth and warmth

It's a long & nappy road
Hot Pink Satan
Congratulations to my friend Clea Cutthroat the virgin single with her band Hot Pink Satan drops today it's called: H A N D - an interview is coming tomorrow here on Entertain Me, duh!

Also another well deserved kudo to my friend Naama Kates whose film Sorceress will be shown at the White Nights Film Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia this month

"Sorceress" In St. Petersburg, Russia

Filmmaker
Naama Kates
This just in from Entertain Me favorite and friend Naama Kates. The indie film she wrote, directed and starred in Sorceress is headed to a Film Festival in Russia, here is the 411 from Ms. Kates herself:

"Wheeee! Just got word "Sorceress" is an Official Selection of the White Nights Film Festival in Russia's amazing city of St. Petersburg, from April 17th-20th, just a couple weeks away!"

You go Naama! Nobody does it better than  you!

While your at it why don't you do yourself a favor and saunter over to Amazon and let Sorceress put a spell on  you. If you love indie film like I do, you'll be glad you did.

Michael's Musings

Come To Daddy
Michael Shinafelt
Another week has passed and the Academy Awards made history twice in one show can you believe it?! One time for something progressive and liberal and another for the biggest error on an Oscar telecast ever. So big that even if you didn't tune in, you heard about it all over the news.

Never fear I am here this week to address both of those moments and more. It's time for me to crack that whip!

Moonlight, which happened to be my favorite film of the year, won the Best Picture Oscar. Thus making Academy Award history as the first film with an all black cast to do so.

Whatever actually went down backstage and on stage Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty made Oscar history by announcing the incorrect Best Picture winner as La La Land only to have some dude from Price Waterhouse come and make the situation right.

Am I the only one who sees a commercial for Kong: Skull Island and thinks Kong: Skull Fuck Island?

Once upon a time there was a transvestite hooker fresh from a trick...

Remember: No matter what you think, I am always way ahead of you

Eat a hot dog and go home, or not

For the record I love Million Reasons by Lady Gaga, but the song really makes no sense. She has a million reasons to let someone go, but if they give her one good one they can stay? Do the math...

Can someone please tell me why? Yeah, I thought not.

A shout out to my friend Naama Kates, her indie film which she wrote, directed not to mention starred in Sorceress is out now! I highly recommend it. You can find it here: http://a.co/fzLrOq8

Just say no to blowing aliens for space Range Rovers

I was pleased Emma Stone won Best Actress for La La Land. The film, while entertaining was incredibly overrated. She really elevated the material and brought a lot of depth and heart to her role.

Until we cyber again, don't do anything I wouldn't do, but if you do, name it after me!

Sorceress-Magic Or Madness?

Planets of the Universe
Naama Kates
Happy Post Oscar Monday, how about that Best Picture flub? Moving on you may recall a fairly recent interview I did with filmmaker Naama Kates about her indie Sorceress here is the link:

http://mshinafelt.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-sorcery-of-naama-kates.html

Well guess what peeps, it's been released! Here to tell you all about it is a note from Naama herself, read on minions...

Hey. Hey! What is up, hey?

Sooo... Nowadays, making movies is easy. NOT. Nowadays, making movies is frickin' hard. Writing them, shooting them, producing them-- it takes a village. Literally. A big, whopping, fat production, also literally, involving the creative and administrative skills and talents of many, many people. The most collaborative medium of all media. So there's that. To make movies...

And getting anyone to see them, once made, is frickin' hard. Hard, hard, hard!!! Because, well, because it's always been hard, because it's a competitive field, and cuz of democratization of resources, and technology, and various new media outlets, like SVOD platforms, and cuz who cares, cuz everyone has a story, and cuz there are so many good ones already being told, every moment of every day, not just at the cinema or on the telly or the radio, but on your social media feed, and over the phone, and at the neighborhood pub, and, lord knows in any newspaper, and, and, and.

So, not to make a short story longer, and because I have not won any awards* so a long-winded gushing acceptance speech is not in order, I'll refrain from thanking, in this email, all of the incredible people who made this all possible... Also, that's what the credits are for... But I would like to mention my awesome distributor, Global Genesis Group, and in particular Charles Morris Jr. of GGG for taking a chance with me and my film, Sorceress, because now it is available for y'all to see, on-demand on Amazon, for rent, and free if you have Amazon Prime (which I highly recommend as a longtime member for like 5 years now). So, YEAH!

And this is IT:
http://a.co/fzLrOq8

If you wanna know a bit more before you take the plunge, check out the images and synopsis on the Global Genesis site at: http://globalgenesisgroup.com/portfolio-view/sorceress/
Or the review by brilliant philosopher and author, Daniel Coffeen at:
http://hilariousbookbinder.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-beautiful-blur-of-being-on-10.html
And if you wanna, stop by and like the FB movie page (though I really got update that) at:
https://www.facebook.com/srcrssthemovie
And follow on Twitter (gotta get that together too):
https://twitter.com/SorceressMovie

So okay YEAH. Most importantly, drum roll please, just go watch it!!!!!!!! http://a.co/fzLrOq8

Now y'all take care. Be safe. Drink a lot of water and wear sunscreen and a hat. And a scarf and a coat, cuz it's cold.

Love and other indoor sports,
xoxoxo

Michael's Musings

Michael "Bullet Nips" Shinafelt

The world keeps turning and has been a very busy place this past week. So busy that the first celebrity passing of 2017 happened yesterday and it was major.

I don't know about you, but I feel a need to let off some steam, and ramble.

Let's get busy!!!

Wouldn't life be more fun if everyone's middle name was "Mother Fuckin'?" Hi, I'm Michael "Mother Fuckin'" Shinafelt, it has a nice ring.

Saw Moonlight this week with Naama Kates, amazing/beautiful/brilliant my pick for best film of the year.

I am so proud to call Los Angeles, CA my home as 750,000 strong turned out for the Women's March. My regret was I was unable to attend.

Had a belated Birthday lunch in Beverly Hills with my dear friend Julie McMahon at the Cheesecake Factory yesterday. Fish and Chips craving satisfied!

The first Trump supporter who complains to me that he isn't doing anything he promised gets a prize from me, a really special one that everyone will see.

R.I.P. Mary Tyler Moore a true legend and icon. I loved her performance in Ordinary People it remains one of my favorites to this day.

The Academy Award Nominations were announced this week in case you care

Sometimes I think to myself - Alyssa Milano is everything

What I said above goes for Ashley Judd as well

In case you are wondering what I'm doing Friday night well wonder no more! I am seeing LeAnn Rimes with Ken Phillips. For the record I am really looking forward to it, she is a terrific singer!

You'll find out. Trust me.

The Sorcery of Naama Kates

Sorceress
Naama Kates
My first introduction to Naama Kates was as a singer/songwriter, then I came to find out she was so much more. She is also an accomplished actress as well as a screenwriter. Now she can add full fledged filmmaker to her resume' with her directorial debut Sorceress, which recently got some much deserved attention at AFM (American Film Market.) To describe this movie would be unfair to the viewer. It is something one needs to experience on their own terms.

Me? I loved it! Here to answer five questions about it is none other than the woman behind the madness Ms. Naama Kates

MS:  What was the inspiration for the film?

NK: Well to me all of life is an inspiration-- whatever happens, for better or worse, if it ends up as material, I can feel like it was worthwhile... I think that's especially important to remember now, during the hard times.  Film, music, literature, comedy, art in general, reminds us that we're not alone in any of it.

That being said, I started writing what became the film in short pieces of dialogue, impressions, usually from conversations I'd had or heard that felt interesting.  And then the location- Finland- where I did my artist residency, was a huge inspiration.  Other elements of the story, of course, came from my life, and from historical figures I found interesting- like Giordano Bruno, a 16th-century alchemist, and the obsession of the film's protagonist.  I wasn't even sure I wanted to make a film, until I had to write a proposal for the residency program.  Like with most of the bigger decisions in life, I act first, and figure it out later.

MS:  How did it feel being a first time Director?

NK: I was all over the place!  We shot it over a really short period of time, with what felt like relatively little preparation.  On the other hand, I've worked on films before with even less preparation and planning... I hardly feel like I directed anything; I had great actors and crew and a great cinematographer, and I think those ingredients, paired with a good script, are most vital.  Since I also wrote it, I wasn't so sure about that last part- the good script- haha.  It was my first time doing anything like it.  At times it was sort of incredible-- all these great people were making my ideas happen!  But then I'd think, wait, are they all just doing this because it's the job?  Does anyone actually think this is a good idea?  Checks and balances are important!

And I couldn't have had a better experience than I did in Finland.  Everyone was so professional, intelligent, humble and straightforward. And so talented!  It's an incredibly progressive society; there is virtually no sexism there and probably never has been, really.  I am extremely grateful for that.

MS: The Cinematography was amazing, and played a role in the story. Where did you find the cinematographer?

NK: Thank you-- and, indeed!  The cinematographer, Jarkko T. Laine, is a member of the Finnish Society of Cinematographers, like our ASC, which is an invitation-only, very prestigious organization.  In the US, I think it would have been nearly impossible for a first-time filmmaker on my budget to get a member to shoot my movie, without pulling some serious strings.  Because Finland is a much smaller country (only 5 million people) and isn't so crazy when it comes to the movie business, the artists are more accessible; I went to the FSC website and emailed Jarkko directly, and then he brought on the A.D, Ville Gronroos, and A.C., Jenni Riutta, as well as the sound recorder, Akseli Soini.  That was our crew!  And they really brought it to another level.

MS:  Now, I don't want you to give away the ending, but while I didn't see it coming in hindsight I should have.

NK: Hehe... well, so far I haven't heard from anyone that they saw it coming.  I wanted to leave it somewhat open to interpretation.  I think that, for people who resonate with the movie, it will probably be a somewhat familiar question: am I crazy? Is this real? Is it just a coincidence? Will anyone believe me?... I think most people have those moments, and I think that the answer is never clear.  It was easy to do in the script, but I questioned it during editing-- whether it was too ambiguous.  I didn't have any guidance while I was writing, but had quite a lot of invaluable input during post-production.  I was so connected to it by then, it was impossible to be objective.

MS: To me the film is ultimately about the creative process, what would you  like the audience to take away from their experience?

NK: I like that.  I think it doesn't have to be about the creative process in the way we usually intend-- like, it doesn't have to literally be about art.  Just about thinking differently, feeling differently, than people around you.  Wanting to be understood, and then maybe feeling that connection with someone, and then losing it.  It's also largely about dealing with loss/grief.  I think those themes are rather universal, and really I just want an audience, period!  Haha!  And ideally, I hope they take that away-- a feeling of being understood, by the film itself...

Michael's Musings

Love A Man In Uniform?
Michael Shinafelt
Yes, it's that random day of the week I get to bridle you in and make you submit. Who's Your Daddy? If you said Michael Shinafelt, welcome. Other answers will be considered a very naughty mistake and you know what that means...

So with my thoughts and impressions from the last time I posted this, until now, here I go, and there is nothing you can do about it!

Special thanks to Vika Zal for getting me into the invite only screening at the Irish Film Festival in Los Angeles of "Handsome Devil." A wonderful coming of age gay themed film. See it if you get a chance.

To Naama Kates my lovely date for the evening: Tayin' in the Santa Ana Wins...

OK, as you all know Entertain Me endorses Hillary Clinton. Here is one beef I have about her supporters who aren't me. You bag on Trump for his instigating of hate and then turn around and post on social media that anyone who doesn't support Hillary can stop following you, remove themselves from your friends list etc. Food for thought.

Missing someone's spunk, is that a thing?

I was unable to attend Folsom in San Francisco this year. Thanks to the world wide web felt like I didn't miss a thing.

Ever Notice Donald Trump and Heat Miser are never in the same room?

"Cheers to our hairless vaginas" - shit Gwyneth Paltrow says

Scream Queens is back for a second season. I really don't want to extrapolate.

Oh ye of little hype. Today I just realized by flipping channels that Project Runway is already two weeks into it's 15th season.

There's someone for everyone. Yes, really.

Enjoy your "Hump Day" I know I plan to ; )

Where In The World Is Naama Kates?

Naama Kates: On The Move and Ready for Adventure!
Singer/Songwriter/Actress Naama Kates has been living out of a suitcase for the last six months.

Globetrotting to places like Finland, Los Angeles, New York and coming soon Spain so I asked her what are her ten must haves when she travels.

So what's in your bag Naama?

1. My Xanax.  Because at some point during a 22 hour flight, you might start to go stir crazy and freak out and decide, during your 6-hour layover in Dublin, that you can't handle one more second in a plane and just run out into the street and then, after a couple of days frolicking and hanging out in pubs with Irish novelists, you realize you have to get to Madrid ASAP, and you've already spent all this money and, it's a good story but so's the one where you just get to Cadiz, and see flamenco music, and finish your movie and meet all these amazing people.... Yeah.  No panic attacks.  If it involves the TSA I'm taking my Xanax.

2. My laptop (and LaCie hard drives with my projects and iRig... I'll call this all work technogear.)

3. My iPhone, for internet (cuz there's free wifi everywhere in Europe) and music. Even though it
won't work overseas and I'll have to buy a Slovenian burner phone. ;-)

4. My skin cream w/ SPF 50+!

5. My suede-bound notebook.  Right now I put everything in that.  Song chords and lyrics.  Shot
lists.  To-do lists.  Phone numbers.  And I can always open it when meeting people to look
more organized/professional.  Or just busy.  And I'd keep info in it like my flight confirmation
code and time and addresses I might need and even my passport and visa number in case I
lose everything, and my electronic routing number, in case I lose EVERYTHING.  And
because consequently, by losing this book, I am theoretically handing my identity to a thief
wrapped with ribbons and foil and a Christmas card-- I would NOT put my name anywhere in it!

6. My make-up bag.  That's ONE item.  But if I were to lose it at the gas station in Hartola, I'd
get mascara, lip gloss and BB cream first.

7.  A novel I know I can consume me, for the flight and more.

8.  Wallet.

9.  Cigarettes and lighter.  Yeah yeah.

10.  Some jolly-ranchers..... wait... is this list about leaving home like before I travel or like to go to the gas station???

Happy Halloween Everyone, Time For Treats

It's here, my favorite Holiday of the year, give me an H-a-l-l-o-w-e-e-n, what's that spell? Halloween, Yay! This year I have decided to celebrate All Hallows Eve by having familiar faces pop by and chime in on the Season of the Witch...

Including myself. I love horror movies and my contribution to this column on the most holy of days will be images from my favorite horror movie of all time: John Carpenter's Halloween.

Michael Myers scared the crap out of me, I used to see his white emotionless face appear in the dark for a few years after I first saw the movie! Eeeeeeeeeeeek! So let's get this Dead Man's Party started, shall we? Treat time people!

"I'd re-animate Vlad the impaler. He could show Isis how a pro does it".- Stuart Gordon Writer/Director "Re-Animator" & "Re-Animator The Musical"

"I love sweet tarts which are probably too old fashioned for kids today. It's got this chalky taste that's closer to children's aspirin (which I also love) than candy. I like the candy that everyone hates like candy corn, butterscotch, sweet tarts. And I hate bobbing for apples. That seems dangerous and not delicious." - Margaret Cho Comedian/Writer/Actress

"My favorite thing about Halloween was trading the candy I got from trick or treating for things I actually wanted, because I didn't like candy." - Avi Kaplan Pentatonix
Jamie Lee Curtis Will Cut You!

"We started celebrating Halloween in September haha. We go to the library & get all Halloween stories & start watching Halloween movies. This year were setting up a Halloween tree & making all our own costumes. It's visually festive. We're obsessed!!" -  James Durbin Singer/Songwriter/American Idol Finalist

"Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday!!  I grew up doing theatre, so it's basically the one time of the year you can be overly theatrical and dress up and the better you do it the cooler you are, haha.  I also just love scary movies and going to themed events like haunted houses, theme parks, parties, etc.  It's all just super fun and scary!" - Kirstin Maldonado Pentatonix

"Um...free chocolate...all you have to do is get dressed up for fun. Yea...I'm all in!" - Raine Brown Actress/Producer/Scream Queen

"My favorite thing about Halloween is getting a group together and going to haunted houses. I looooove being scared with my best friends!"  - Scott Hoying Pentatonix

Everybody Run! It's Michael Myers!
"I LOVE Halloween.  It's my favorite holiday between the costumes and the ghost stories.  I dress up every year and I find that somehow whatever my costume it sort of takes over me and becomes a part of my spirit that defines each year... I like making my costumes myself too; not sewing them or anything but combining the parts in a way that's unique and not just buying something ready made.  Oh and here in LA I insist on going on the Haunted Hayride in Griffith Park!" - Naama Kates Singer/Songwriter/Actress "Souled"

"To be honest, I usually stay in and watch a movie or hang out with friends at their home lol. But maybe I’ll try something fun this year this Halloween!" Kevin “K.O.” Olusola Cellist, Beatboxer - Pentatonix

"Love me a handful of candy corn, a sparkly magical costume and a bunch of great friends! Kids at my door cutie pies in costumes, party time! That's what I love about Halloween!" - EG Daily Singer/Songwriter/Actress

"I grew up doing theatre, like Kirstie, so playing dress-up has always been fun for me! I love the decorating aspect of Halloween, too. The kitschier the better!" - Mitchell C. Grassi Pentatonix

"The DRAMA!! lol!" - Aiden Leslie Singer/Songwriter

Look Behind You Babysitter!
"My favorite part of Halloween is the 364 days before when my 5 year old twins try on costumes in preparation".- Cindy Alexander Singer/Songwriter

"I love to go to the Day of the Dead festival at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. It's a wonderful taste of loving Mexican culture," - Sir JET Gender Bending Pop Singer

"The look on a kid's face when they walk in with SO much candy."- Debby Holiday Singer/Songwriter

"I love the spirit of Halloween! Dressing up, eating candies and having a great time with your family and friends" - Grace Valerie Singer/Songwriter

"My favorite thing about Halloween is probably Elvira’s boobs. I mean, they are life giving. A close second is making sure to watch Michael Jackson’s, “Thriller”, from start to finish - and dancing that amazing choreography full out because you know, it’s “thriller, thriller night, and no one’s gonna save you from the beast about to strike.” Matthew Duffy Singer/Dancer/Perfomer
We Know It's You Michael
"My favorite thing about Halloween is that my birthday is a few days after." - Monique Parent Actress/Scream Queen
"I'm not Wednesday Addams, but I've always been a night owl with a flair for the macabre. Halloween is the one time I can feel truly at home. Add in some chocolate...perfection!" - M.E. Franco Author, The Dion Series
"Dancing to Necroditty! And remember boys and girls...Lloyd is still out there!" - The Drews, Americana With Twisted Roots Band
"I'll be at Comikaze the whole day on Halloween at our booth 161 Hollywood Sci-Fi Museum" - Huston Huddleston Hollywood Sci-Fi Museum Head Honcho
