Film Buff Friday: Flowers In The Attic

Before the Lifetime TV movie...

When her husband dies in a tragic accident, widow Corrine Dollanganger (Victoria Tennant, The Holcroft Covenant) takes her four children to the ancestral family home she fled before they were born. Locked away in the attic by their tyrannical grandmother (Academy Award® winner Louise Fletcher, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), it falls to older brother and sister Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams, The Goonies) and Cathy (Kristy Swanson, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to care for their younger siblings. But with their mother growing increasingly distant and erratic and a mysterious sickness taking hold, will any of the Dollanganger children survive to escape the clutches of the house's cruel matriarch? Originally published in 1979, VC Andrews' novel Flowers in the Attic was a smash hit, spawning four sequels and going on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide. With undercurrents of incest and child abuse and a haunting score by Christopher Young (Hellraiser), Flowers in the Attic is a dark and chilling Gothic suspense thriller in the classic tradition.

Two Of A Kind

Bravo!
Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn

When in New York do what New Yorker's do - strut. That's exactly what fashionistas Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn from Project Runway were spotted doing recently on the streets of the Big Apple

Seeing can be deceiving. What appears to be a friendly stroll, I'm willing to bet is pretty much business as usual, because production of Season 17 of Project Runway is underway.

Oh, and there's more. It's getting back to it's roots and airing on the network it was made for to begin with Bravo. "Yes" Andy Cohen is wetting himself as we engage via the WWW.

While I am sure Heidi & Tim adore each other, let's face it, outside of their famed juggernaut they have quite separate lives. Thus what could bring them together for so much quality time? Common ground.

The latest season on the catwalk is set to air in 2019, now that it's back where it should be I will have to start watching again. Yeah, I didn't get the whole Lifetime vibe, sorry, not sorry.

Michael's Musings

The New Black???
Michael Shinafelt
This past week has been a "Stormy" one - get it? wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Pretty much every week is of late.

Seriously with Easter falling on April Fools Day this weekend I feel so conflicted. Do I hunt for eggs or pull a rabbit out of my butt?

It's time to make a decision, and whatever you do make it yours!

What he said -
"The Stormy Daniels story isn't about Trump having an affair with a porn star. That's not news. It is about his campaign trying to threaten, intimidate and illegally use campaign funds to buy her silence just weeks before the election. Don't let the lurid details overshadow this." - George Takei

I licked it, so it's mine

Started doing an abs class on top of spinning, yoga & boxing - what a feeling!

#fashioncompassion "Dear @StormyDaniels, I can only imagine how stressful things must be for you right now. Fashion shouldn’t be one of them. Let me know if you need a sleek ensemble. @teampinup @Laura_Byrnes" - Traci Lords

Hey Shakira, you don't have a monopoly on hips that don't lie

Sometimes I wonder...what? You thought I was going to tell you what that was???

Just saw that someone bit Beyonce, all I want to know is, how did she taste?

Toni Trucks
A "beep beep" to my spin buddy and one of the stars of CBS' Seal Team, Toni Trucks for it getting picked up for season two

Is there anybody out there?

Unreal on Lifetime really lives up to it's title, I mean that in a good way

I Get My Kicks Below The Waistline, Sunshine
Michael Shinafelt
"I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine" - Murray Head, One Night in Bangkok

The 80's hit One Night in Bangkok came to mind this week, Thus I juxtaposed the lyrics to caption my photo and then presented the actual ones.

Why? Well because the sentiments are two contrasting extremes and life is about balance. Like everyone some of my kicks are mental while others are physical.

But when mental and physical connect it's spectacular. In case you were wondering if that's something I have, why "yes" it is. If your happy and you know it clap your hands!

WTF?! Nicole Kidman In A Lifetime Movie?!

Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly
OK, I had heard Grace of Monaco, starring one of my favorite actresses, Nicole Kidman was not all that good. This latest news on the indefinitely delayed film which was supposed to premiere in theaters in November of 2013. Well to put it mildly it is by passing the silver screen all together now and premiering on Lifetime May 25th, WTF!?

Nothing says bad like a Lifetime movie, and this must be some sort of awful since it costs $30 Million to make, the highest budgeted TV movie of the week ever.

Kidman, however, has defended the film, saying that it is not meant to be a biopic or documentary, but is just a "small part of  Grace Kelly's life when she reveals her great humanity as her fears and weaknesses."

Well at the very least, unlike a lot of acting in Lifetime movies, I am sure Kidman will deliver a great performance.

Check out the trailer below -

Leonard Nimoy, Go Boldly Into The Next Adventure

Leonard Nimoy as Spock: Live Long and Prosper

Leonard Nimoy most known for his iconic role as Spock on the TV series Star Trek, which later spawned a string of successful movies with the original cast and then a later a new one has passed away.

While I was never into Star Trek I respect it's place in television history and the cultural impact it has had.

So I asked my friend and Trekkie Rhonda Bernstein to speak to the passing of Mr. Nimoy:

"I was very saddened and surprised to hear of his passing. Spock, as written and portrayed by Nimoy, was truly an iconic figure and one of the most complex, endearing and enduring characters in all the Star Trek iterations. Nimoy used his fame to advance numerous artistic and charitable causes.  His lifetime of achievements, both before and off the screen, enriched us all."

Well put!

The Unstoppable Dolly Parton "A Country Christmas Story"

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton's career has spanned nearly five decades, basically as long as I have been alive, and deservedly so...

Seriously, Dolly is talented, has charisma, is smart as Hell, sweet and not to mention just so damned lovable. Who else could make the most awesome self-deprecating quote of all time:

"It costs a lot of money to look this cheap" - Dolly Parton

Well I can not begin to list all of the ways Dolly has entertained me and made me smile since birth, but she is here to bring you her special kind of warmth for the Holidays in the Lifetime movie "A Country Christmas Story" the storyline and air dates go like this:

Grammy Award winner Dolly Parton (Nine to Five, Steel Magnolias), to star along with Megyn Price (Rules of Engagement), Brian McKnight (American Dreams), newcomer Desiree Ross (Crossing the River) in the upcoming Lifetime Original Movie A Country Christmas StorySaturday, November 9, at 8:00 pm ET/PT.

A Country Christmas Story follows a young bi-racial Appalachian Mountain girl (Ross) as she defies her mother (Price) and goes against stereotype when she takes up guitar in pursuit of her dream of becoming a country star.  Her journey to the stage at Dollywood and a singing competition hosted by Dolly Parton reunites her itinerant musician father (McKnight) with her family, as well as uncovering the musical legacy of African Americans in the world of country music.  Mary Kay Place (Big Love, Being John Malkovich) will portray her grandmother.

Yep, Dolly is the bomb!

Margaret Cho Is On The Loose

Margaret Cho is on the loose! Where shall we begin? Season five of "Drop Dead Diva" on Lifetime seems like a good starting point, follow that up with new tour dates for her acclaimed comedy show "Mother".

Not to mention her three women fresh out of jail YouTube series "In Transition" and she's baaaaaack co-hosting "The View" Thursday July 25th and Friday July 26th, hoping to take over one of the vacant seats.

There are so many other things I could say, instead of reading my shopping list let's let Margaret tell us herself.

MS: "Drop Dead Diva" is back! Did you think that would happen since Lifetime initially cancelled it?

MC: You never really know with TV. You never know how things are going to go, that's the nature of it. What's really great is the fans really love "Drop Dead Diva" and they wanted to see more.

MS: It's a cute show, I've seen it a couple of times. It puts a smile on your face when you're in a bad mood.

MC: I like that.

MS: Sandra Bernhard is a guest this season.

MC: She's amazing, I'm such a fan of hers. We talked about what a sexist Jerry Lewis is when it comes to women in comedy, it's disturbing. I was talking to her about how amazing she was in "The King of Comedy".

MS: Oh she's so good in that!

MC: Sooooo good! It's legendary, a great movie! I think it's Martin Scorsese at his best. With Sandra as a mad stalker...she is so hilarious and so sexy.

MS: She scared the Hell out of me in that!

MC: I love her when she's scary, that's when she's at her best. She's just fabulous in every way, as a comedian, actress and a musician. She is someone I admire tremendously so it was great to have her as part of our show.

                                               Margaret's YouTube Series "In Transition"

MS: By the way "Mistress Lina" I was on season 2 of "Where The Bears Are" and so were you!

MC: Oh that's great! I haven't seen it yet, what part did you play?

MS: I got some good face time in the Faultline Bar scene.

MC: Oh My God I have to watch it. I'm saving it up to watch it all at once, I hate to watch one episode and not be able to see the next one, I have to see it all at once.

MS: Well I was caught of guard by your role as "Mistress Lina" when you pulled the demure Asian Woman thing and when the Bears fell for it you called them racist. (laughs)

MC: I know, it was fun!

MS: Like, where did that come from?! Sorry I sound like Janis Joplin today, I got the rasps this morning.

MC: That's OK.

MS: So I saw you on "The View" was that fun?

MC: That is the job I want most of all. I am in the running to be a host.

MS: Oh wow, that's awesome!

MC: It's a great thing, it would be so cool, I would love it!

MS: Personally I wished Elisabeth Hasselbeck had been on the day you were I would have liked to see an exchange between the two of you. I don't think she's stupid, I think she doesn't articulate her opinions in a clear manner.

MC: She's great, they're all great for their own different points of view, ideas and jokes. It's a real rock-n-roll sort of thing, they all play their different instruments and I'd really love be a part of that band.

MS: How was doing "In Bed With Joan"?

MC: It was a blast! I love Joan Rivers, and I love going over to her house. It's so exciting, and she is so hysterical. I've know her for a long time, and I respect her and love her so dearly.

MS: Like I told a friend recently when you are 80 you want to be Joan Rivers, she has the stamina of a 20 year old and still has her wits about her.

MC: Totally! She is so cool and has such a strong work ethic. An unbelievable presence, such a cool lady.

MS: Since I know touring is your favorite thing, hit me with when you are doing it some more.

MC: At the end of August I will be playing some gigs in Georgia, Athens & Atlanta - I will also be touring all over Europe.

TV Watch: Jennifer Love Hewitt Proves How Handy She Is On "The Client List"

"Riley is a single mother living in a small Texas town and leading a shocking double life. Her secret would send shockwaves through the community and possibly land her in jail if it was ever exposed. Riley's taken a job at a seemingly traditional day spa, but soon realizes that the parlor offers a little more than just massage therapy. It's not the happy ending she was expecting but it does open her eyes to a world she's never seen before" -

So goes the synopsis for the Lifetime series "The Client List" starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. While bored with everything on TV one night and having pretty much exhausted all of the things on my On Demand feature, I saw this listed on Lifetime and decided to give it a shot.

Now I know I am coming into season two (I was aware of the show, just never saw it before) and may have missed a lot of set-up from the first season, but as it turns out "The Client List" is much like tuning into a daytime soap you have not been following, not that hard to fill in the blanks and fit the pieces together as so you know what is going on.

What can I say about this show, it is one of those things that is a guilty pleasure, like a plateful of cheese smothered nachos, you know it's bad for you, but damn it's fun!

Cybill Shepherd on The Client List
I happened upon the second episode of season two. The opening scene proves just how handy Jennifer Love Hewitt can be, literally. As Riley Parks the now owner of the abovementioned spa we see Ms. Hewitt giving a client a half hour long hand job and having having issues with wrist and shoulder fatigue in the process, that scene alone would have made the episode worth watching.

Grudgingly I admit to being a fan of JLH, there is something very appealing about her, she is a good actress, but let's face it she's got a nice pair of assets and she is adorable even while giving a hand job. Thus her casting, I am sure, in the lead role, after all who is going to get offended by JLH being bad? No one, you actually sympathize and root for her, even while she is pressing high heels into the back of a public official. JLH brings humor, sexy and likability with her to every role she plays.

BTW, can we talk about Cybill Shepherd as Riley's Mom "Linette Montgomery" who is blissfully unaware (although I'm not so sure) of Riley's double life.

Loretta Devine with Jennifer Love Hewitt "The Client List"
And the great Loretta Devine as "Georgia Cummings" Riley's best friend and former owner of the spa that Riley started at and now owns....

PS - there are plenty of hot guys on the show, but the female characters are definitely in charge!

"Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive" - Sir Walter Scott

Get your guilty pleasure on, and tune in to "The Client List" on Lifetime...

Jim Fall: Holly's Holiday

Director & Writer Jim Fall is best known for his classic movie "Trick" and as the man who brought Lizzie McGuire to the big screen in, what else? "The Lizzie McGuire Movie".

Tis' the season and Jim's latest "Trick" is the Christmas movie "Holly's Holiday" set to air on Lifetime December 8th.

Jim popped by "Entertain Me" for a chat with yours truly, read on and see what he had to say...

MS: You know "Trick" is going to be the film you'll be remembered for don't you?

JF: I assume so, I'm happy that is the one. (laughs)

MS: Most people don't have a signature film, it's nice that you do.

JF: It is nice. That movie was such a labor of love, if someone had told me that twelve years later people would still  be thinking about it, enjoying and loving it, I wouldn't have believed them. I love it, it's amazing!

MS: The performance you got out of Tori Spelling was amazing!

JF: Everyone always asks me that. To be honest I gave her an opportunity and she took it. It was the right part at the right time and she was game. I mean of course I directed her, but the performance was all Tori.

Jim Fall

MS: Being a fan of horror and science fiction why is it you haven't directed a movie in either genre?

JF: Yeah, I'm kind of surprised that I didn't start out trying to direct those kind of things, but I just don't.

MS: Well you were a Production Assistant on the horror flick "Bad Dreams".

JF: That was my first Hollywood job, I got it because Andrew Fleming who directed it and I went to school at NYU (New York University) I stood around the Port-A-Potty with a walkie talkie (laughs) Being that it was my first Hollywood job I was thrilled to have it. Years later, I kind of owe my career to Andy, I was trying to find the money for "Trick". I was a little embarrassed to ask him, but I finally did tell him that I could not find the money to get it made and I would just die if I couldn't. So, I sent him the script and he gave it to his agent at UTA (United Talent Agency) who gave it to Howard Cohen gave it his partner Eric who ended up putting up the money, Howard became my agent, I got the movie made and it ended up going to Sundance, and I kind of owe that to the fact Andy helped me that it happened that way.

MS: It was funny to me how you like genre films and you have never done one yourself.

JF: Funny you should mention that, the company that made "Holly's Holiday" also makes other genre movies, I told them I want to make a disaster movie. I've always loved disaster movies, my favorite movies were "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno". I pitched them, here's hoping.

MS: So, "Holly's Holiday" is about a mannequin that comes to life, they have a habit of doing that this time of year it seems. (laughs)

JF: One of the main reasons I was excited to do "Holly's Holiday" was when I was young I made a short film about a woman who falls in love with mannequin. I had just broken up with my very first boyfriend, and I was bitter and angry. So, the mannequin really was him, because at the end of the movie the mannequin ends up being an asshole, and leaves her for someone that is more his type. Since I wasn't ballsy enough to make it my first gay film, although in my movie he is literally a mannequin the whole time and in this movie you're not sure whether it is just a dream that he comes to life or not. Lifetime is going to air it on Christmas Eve as well.

MS: Let's hear what your five favorite Holiday Movies, including New Year's as there is a certain New Year's Eve disaster movie that you love, are.

JF: One of the obvious ones is "A Christmas Story" I never get tired of watching that it's so fucking funny! It's just such a wonderful film.

MS: It is.

JF: "It's A Wonderful Life" makes me cry.

MS: Me as well and I'm a hard cry.

JF: Of course "The Poseidon Adventure" (laughs) The strokes in the movie are broad, but the tone is consistent and the characters are so lovable. You love these people and you care when shit happens to them.

MS: True.

JF: "Female Trouble" well it's not really a Christmas movie, but there's that wonderful scene where a Christmas tree falls on the mother. (laughs) There is a tree falling on someone in "Holly's Holiday" too, so maybe that's a homage to "Female Trouble".

MS: Give me one more pick.

JF: "Auntie Mame" that movie has a whole Christmas sequence in it. It's amazing.

MS: What was the shoot for "Holly's Holiday" like?

JF: We shot it in thirteen days, which is really short for a shoot.

MS: Yeah, that is.

JF: It comes out to nine scenes a day which is nuts. It looks really great though you would never know it was a low budget TV movie.

"Holly's Holiday" airs on Lifetime Saturday December 8th and encores on Christmas Eve.

Interview: Margaret Cho is a "Lying Pervert"

Margaret on "Drop Dead Diva"
Photo: Kevin Lynch

It’s a Cho, Cho World - with season four of “Drop Dead Diva” already in full swing & her upcoming comedy tour “Mother” not to mention her too cool for school guest spot as Kim Jong Il on “30 Rock” Margaret Cho is in your face B!tches!

She even caught the attention of the Fred Phelps comedy troupe known as The Westboro Baptist Church, who called her a “Lying Pervert” uh, ok, we Cho fans already knew that, duh!

MS:  Hi “Lying Pervert“.

MC: It’s true, when I read that I was kind of like, well, yes! I think that’s fine.

MS: The Westboro Baptist Church is so over the top, I find the the sh!t they say oddly funny.

MC: It’s really kind of flattering. Once they had a big picture of Elizabeth Taylor with the words “Fag Hag” underneath it. I thought it was just so flattering, some sort of signage for people who support gay rights, it’s really kind of amazing.

MS: BTW I watched the season four premiere of “Drop Dead Diva” you look like you are having a blast on that show!

MC: Yes, I have a really good time and I really love the cast. They are all really talented actors and we have really amazing guest stars all the time, which is a lot of fun. My favorite this year have been, Patty Duke…and I didn’t even get to meet Kim Kardashian, but I guess she is coming back soon, so hopefully I will get to see her. We’re always having all sorts of fun people drop in. It’s a great place to be for shooting “Drop Dead Diva“, Atlanta, GA, people are here everyday. Kathy Griffin just came through this past weekend and that was a lot of fun. It’s a cool place to be and being part of cast for four years and playing a character for four years is really great.

MS: The chemistry between the actors on the show rocks. I did watch the season four premiere before we spoke, Kim Kardashian wasn’t bad actually.

MC: She was good.

MS: Let's talk about your upcoming tour “Mother”.
Photo: Austin Young

MC: I have to put my tour schedule together for six months out of the year, because the other six months I am working on “Drop Dead Diva”. Every once in a while I’ll be able to get out and do a gig, but that’s pretty rare, finally I’m actually getting to go back out on the road. People have talked about my “Mother” impression all throughout my career, I wanted to do a show that was just, full on about her (laughs). It’s also about how I have become a “Mother” for the Queer community, I became a maternal figure within that context. This show is about my Mom, dedicated to Mom’s and about a Mom, which would be me I guess. (laughs)

MS: Do you ever want kids for real?

MC: No, no, I mean it is a possibility, it’s important to think, that even if I am not an actual “Mother” I still have to be there for Queer/LGBT young kids. You have to be there as an adult figure within the Queer community. We all have to do that it’s an important thing. In my generation I lost a lot of people that I looked up to in the Queer community. People that are “Generation X’ers” have to have much more of a parental influence to bridge that gap.

MS: There are plenty of people that I do that with. Since we were on the subject of  Mom’s I had never really asked you if you wanted to become one, so I had to go there.

MC: You sort of become one by default, in the sense that when you age and get older you just become a kind of a “Mother” even if you don’t literally have child, you have one, we all do.

MS: I caught your guest stint on “30 Rock” as North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Il, you played a guy, but it really worked.

MC: Oh yeah, it was insane because I looked just like him. When I went outside, I was standing there in the bald cap and the wig…I got cruised by this hot older Bear. He thought I was a hot young Asian Bear, I’m like: “ I just got “Bear Cruised” - but I could not follow through on it exactly because I am sure he did not know I was a woman. (laughs)

MS: Yeah, I did not recognize it was you right off.

MC: It’s so crazy how much I look like him, it’s really scary.

MS: Tina Fey said it was one of her proudest moments on the show, having you on as Kim Jong Il, how cool is that?

MC: I really love her and am so proud to have been on the show and have played that character, I am actually North Korean. To be from there and to be isolated from my family because of this dictator, and to be able to make fun of him is a great thing, but it is also pretty sad too, it’s a weird situation.

MS: When he died what were your thoughts?

MC: I was hoping there would be some sort of a change, that it would be time for that country to open up, but that hasn’t happened obviously it has gotten a bit worse. There is less contact, less communication and less scrutiny.

MS: How’s your music going?

MC: I will be doing some music on “Drop Dead Diva” this year.

MS: Very cool!

MC: Also I am so excited to go out on tour as well!

MS: Out of everything you do is touring your favorite?

MC: Touring is and will always be my favorite job! I really love stand-up.

TV Watch: Lindsay Lohan Takes On Taylor

Lindsay Lohan & Grant Bowler as Taylor & Burton
Alright people, it's time I chimed in on this, everyone seems to be down on Lindsay Lohan's casting as icon Elizabeth Taylor.

First off we have not seen her actual performance, so STFU until you do, then judge. That being said Lohan has proven herself a credible actress, of course I could site one of my fave movies of all time "Mean Girls" and as a matter of fact I just did....but let's go to this place "Prairie Home Companion" anyone? Where she played Meryl Streeps daughter and held her own against the amazing Meryl, thank you very much.

Now let's address those who think Lindsay is not "classy" enough to play Elizabeth Taylor. Like Taylor, Lindsay is human and has made many mistakes along the way, what Elizabeth Taylor does not walk on water?!

Uh, no actually, she was human too just like Linds, which is why I think Lindsay is going to bring it on in her portrayal.

The real Taylor & Burton

They were both child actresses, no easy path, from other examples we have seen in the media, besides Ms. Lohan.

Elizabeth Taylor was a pariah during her time too for her adulteress affair with then married Richard Burton.

Dear Elizabeth also abused alcohol and prescription pills, most likely even up to her later years, anyone remember her loopy presentation on the Golden Globes to "Gladiator" for Best Picture?

I am certainly not one to live in a glass house and throw stones like most people, nor do I have a selective memory, like the masses, I do remember all of these things about Ms. Taylor that everyone else seems to be choosing to ignore in favor of America's favorite pastime, Lindsay bashing.

That being stated, I think Elizabeth Taylor was a great broad and her kindness and humanitarian efforts will be her legacy. We are all human and flawed and Lindsay is no exception, I hope she nails the role of a Lifetime (yes, pun intended) and gets herself back on track.

Elizabeth's legend will continue to shine, why not give Ms. Lohan the same chance to re-invent her life?
